Alma M. Schmidt

Alma M. Schmidt, 86, of Yoakum, died Monday, Oct. 6, 2003.
She was born On Jan. 17, 1917 in DeWitt County to the late Fred and Annie Meyer Wolter. She was a homemaker and a Lutheran.
She is survived by her daughter, Janet Zabransky of Yoakum; brothers, Oscar Wolter Sr. and Martin Wolter, both of Cuero; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Schmidt; parents; and brother Fred Wolter Jr. and Ernest Wolter.
Visitation was Wednesday, Oct. 8 at Buffington Funeral Home in Yoakum. Services were held Thursday, Oct. 9 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Rev. Gary Goodson officiated. Burial was at Hermann Sons Cemetery. Buffington Funeral Home, Yoakum, 361-293-2333.
Pallbearers: Oscar Wolter Jr., Jimmy Wolter, Ernest Wolter Sr., Henry Schmidt Jr., and Keith Schmidt.

Ronnie R. Hernandez

Ronnie Ray Hernandez, 37, of Houston and formerly of Cuero, died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003.
He was born April 10, 1966, in Cuero, to Natalia Munoz of Cuero and the late Leon Hernandez Sr. He was a director for H.E.B. in Houston and a Catholic.
Survivors: daughters, Sara Hernandez and Teresa Hernandez, both of Houston; and half brothers, Leon Hernandez Jr. of Bay City and Tommy Hernandez of Amarillo.
A rosary was recited Tuesday, Dec. 9 at Freund Funeral Home Chapel. Services were Wednesday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Cuero, the Rev. Kirby Hlavaty officiated. Burial was at Hillside Cemetery in Cuero. Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, 361-275-2343.
Pallbearers: Joe Pena, Thomas Banda, Emilio Saenz, Martin Rodriguez, Raymond Navarro, and Sylvia Ortiz.

Michael Joseph Nash

Michael Joseph "Mike" Nash Sr., age 46, of Floresville, and formerly of Yorktown, died Monday, Dec. 8, 2003 near Floresville.
He was born on July 13, 1957 in Houston to R. L. "Blackie" and Lydia Machac Nash of Yorktown.
He is survived by his daughter, Kelly Michelle Nash and fiance Kyle Schuenemann of Floresville; son, Michael Joseph Nash Jr. of Cuero; sister, Deborah Sheffield and husband Ed of Huntsville; brothers, James "Jimbo" Nash and wife Brenda of Yorktown, Christopher Nash and wife Kim of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Joe and Hattie Machac and Abern and Belle Nash, and brother-in-law, Ron Armer.
Mike was a driller for Coastal Drilling Company and a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, Woodmen of the World Life Insurance Society, Yorktown Little League, and a graduate of Yorktown High School Class of 1975. He was an avid sports fan with his favorite teams being the Astros, Spurs and Cowboys. He was able to recite scores, history, batting averages from past years in detail.
A rosary was recited Thursday, Dec. 11 at Lamprecht-Janssen Funeral Home. Funeral services were Friday at Holy Cross Catholic Church. Burial was in Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, Yorktown. Lamprecht-Janssen Funeral Home 361-564-2277.
Pallbearers: Michael Joseph Nash Jr., James Nash, Christopher Nash, Kyle Schuenemann, Randy Machac, Mike Brinkman, Warren Lemke, and Monnie Riedel.
Honorary pallbearers: Jodie Machac, Ed Sheffield, nieces and nephews, and employees of his Coastal Drilling crew.

Rueben Henry Henneke

Rueben Henry Henneke, 90, of Cuero passed away Monday, Dec. 8, 2003.
He was born March 2, 1913 in DeWitt County to the late Alfred and Minnie Schultz Henneke. He married Ruby Lee Reinhardt on April 5, 1941 at the Rabke Methodist Church. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Rueben worked for McClarty, Boysen and Stanley's grocery stores. He was an active member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church. He was a member of the Cuero V.F.W. Post 3972, the Arneckeville Community Club, and Woodmen of the World.
He is survived by his son, Robert Gerald Henneke of Cuero; son and daughter-in-law, James Danie and Arona Henneke of Victoria; daughter and son-in-law, Patricia Ann and Del Webb of Round Rock; brothers, Benjamin Henneke of Bastrop and Roland Henneke of Hallettsville; and sisters, Hermine Crain of Shreveport, Louisiana, and Lorene Kramer of Farmington, New Mexico. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ruby; a son, David Roy Henneke; and a daughter, Elizabeth Gail Henneke.
Visitation was Wednesday, Dec. 10 at Freund Funeral Home. Funeral services were Thursday at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, the Rev. Stephen Byrne officiated. Burial was in Rabke Cemetery under the direction of Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, 361-275-2343.
Pallbearers: David Henneke, Philip Henneke, Morris Henneke, Gary Henneke, Larry Henneke, and Roger Buchhorn.
Memorials may be made to St. Mark's Lutheran Church, American Cancer Society, American Diabetes Association, or a charity of the donor's choice.

Mary P. Flores

Mary P. Flores, 92, of Cuero, died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2003.
She was born April 22, 1911, in Gonzales, to the late Leonard and Jesusa Perez. She was a homemaker and member of Jerusalem Baptist Church.
Survivors: daughter, Mary Alice Carrera of Huntsville; son, Martin Flores of Deer Park; brother, Leo Perez of Miraloma, California; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: husband, Mercedes G. Flores.
A prayer service was held Thursday, Dec. 11 at Freund Funeral Home Chapel. Services were Friday at Jerusalem Baptist Church, the Rev. Dan Cancino officiated. Burial was at Hillside Cemetery. Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, 361-275-2343.
Pallbearers: grandchildren.
Memorials: Jerusalem Baptist Church.

Maurine J. Bluntzer

Maurine J. Bluntzer, 89, of Salado died Friday, Nov. 21.
Visitation was Sunday, Nov. 23, followed by a rosary at Salado Funeral Home. Services were held Monday at St. Stephens Catholic Church in Salado. Burial was Tuesday in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio.
Mrs. Bluntzer was born in Yorktown. She married Woodrow K. Bluntzer in Cuero on July 8, 1934. She traveled to many states and countries as a military wife and moved to Salado in 1984. She was active in the Officer’s Wives Club at Fort Hood, Village Artists of Salado, Salado Ladies Auxiliary of the Chamber of Commerce, Salado Tablerock and Belton Senior Center. She served on the council of St. Stephen’s Ladies Society.
Her husband, retired Lt. Col. Woodrow K. Bluntzer, preceded her in death on Jan. 29, 1984.
Survivors are a son, William K. Bluntzer of Round Rock; a daughter, Joan Bluntzer Hallmark of Harker Heights; a sister Max Ann Farlee of Lake Jackson; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
Memorials may be made to St. Stephen’s Catholic Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 662, Salado, Texas 76571.

Lois Elaine Askey Mosier

Lois Elaine Askey Mosier, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, departed from this earthly life, called to heaven with ringing bells, on December 10, 2003. She was devoted to her family, took great pride in them and prayed for them without ceasing.
Lois was born March 2, 1938 in Nueces County and graduated from W. B. Ray High School in Corpus Christi. She attended Del Mar College and lived for many years in Rockport. She moved to the Metroplex in 1986 where she was involved in real estate and builder onsite sales. During her years in the Arlington area she was an active member of St. Stephens United Methodist Church, was a member of the Mid-Cities Emmaus Community and the Kairos Prison Ministry. Lois recently moved to Cuero where she joined the First United Methodist Church and began working fir First Presbyterian Church. She served in all her ministries with a loving heart and spirit. Her special joy was choir. Lois made friends wherever she went, as she was an outgoing person with a great sense of humor and infectious laugh. She was an artist who delighted many with both her oil paintings and watercolors and had an amazing way with African Violets! She loved a good game of bridge and conversation with friends.
Lois is preceded in death by her mother and father, Mattie Mae Whitaker Askey and John Nixon Askey of Corpus Christi, and her two sisters, Rosemary Askey of Maryland and Bette Askey of Arlington. She is survived by her sister, Elaine Curlee of Arlington; three daughter and their husbands, Kerry and Bobby Rhotenberry of Cuero, Susan and Russell Pyle of Rockport, Barbie and Jaime Kopacki of Fort Worth; and one son, Danny Mosier of Austin. “Gran-Gran” is additionally survived by twelve grandchildren, Sam and Ethan Rhotenberry; Nathan and Jacob Pyle; Natalie, Nicole, Krista, and David Kopp; Alyssa, Ryan, and Jason Kopacki and wife, Alexis; Alec Mosier; and two great-grandchildren, Carter and Collin Kopacki. She was loved and will be missed by a multitude of very dear friends.
A memorial service will be held in Arlington at St. Stephens United Methodist Church on Monday, Dec. 15. In recognition of her deep and abiding religious faith and impact of Christ in her life, the family asks that donations in her memory be made to each individual’s church of choice in lieu of flowers.

Edgar Lee Niemeier

Well known South Texas Rancher, Edgar Lee Niemeier, of Runge, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 14, 2003 in the Yorktown Nursing Home.
Edgar Lee, the third of five sons born to Henry and Bertha Schaper Niemeier, was born September 29, 1914 on a farm outside of Runge, Karnes County. He attended schools at Cabeza and Ratcliff. For many years Edgar broke horses and mules for a living and also participated in rodeos where he rode bulls, saddle broncs and did some calf roping.
Edgar Lee married Rose Block of Yorktown on Nov. 25, 1936 and they continued to farm and ranch all their live together. He was a member of the First PResbyterian Church in Yorktown and was an Elder in the church. He was named Outstanding Rancher in Karnes County in 1991. He was a director of the Nordheim CoOp Gin, member of the Nordheim Fire Department, was a member of the Yorktown Trail Riders, served as a director of the Karnes County Tax Review Board, served on the board of Karnes County ASCS, and was a school trustee for both GArfield and Runge Schools.
Edgar Lee is preceded in death by his wife, Rose Block Niemeier, who died April 1991 after 55 years of marriage; his parents; two brothers, Arthur Niemeier and Henry Niemeier Jr.; and one granddaughter, Nancy Parma.
Survivors include three daughters, Virginia Harrison of Rock Springs, Doris (Ray) Isley of Adkins, and Beth (James) Schendel of Raymondville; two brothers, Joe Clifton Niemeier of San Antonio and Clarence Niemeier of Yorktown; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Visitation was Tuesday, Dec. 16 at Janssen Funeral Home in Runge. Funeral services will be Wednesday, Dec. 17 at the funeral home, with son-in-law, Rev. James Schendel officiating. Burial will be in the Runge Cemetery. Arrangements by Janssen Funeral Home, 204 N. Mugge St. in Runge, Texas 78151, 830-239-4862.

E. J. “Bert” Neslony

E. J. “Bert” Neslony, 76, of Meyersville, died Tuesday, April 20, 2004.
He was born Nov. 7, 1927 in Davy to the late Mike and Mary Wasser Neslony. He was retired from Phillips Petroleum Co. and was a member of the Cuero VFW, Knights of Columbus, Mission Valley Volunteer Fire Department, and Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Diedering Neslony; daughters, Dorris Ann Welch of Midland, Marilyn Smith of Grand Saline, and Susan Neslony-Sinley of Victoria; son, Will R. Neslony of Boulder, Colorado; brothers, Joe Neslony of Waco, Dan Neslony of San Antonio, Ray Neslony of Cleveland, Texas, Bernard Neslony of Corpus Christi; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Mark James Neslony; sisters, Sue Wadhams, Rose Brandt, Dorothy Neslony; and brother, Edward Neslony.
A rosary was recited Thursday, April 22 at Lamprecht-Janssen Funeral Home Chapel in Yorktown. Services were held Friday at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Meyersville, Rev. Michael Petering officiated. Burial was at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Yorktown. Lamprecht-Janssen Funeral Home, Yorktown, 361-564-2277.
Pallbearers were Colby Welch, Todd Welch, Lawrence Neslony, Ray Neslony Jr., Lonnie Diedering, and Joe Whiteley.

Edwin L. Zaiontz

Edwin Leon Zaiontz, 77, of Yorktown, died Monday, April 19, 2004.
He was born Sept. 21, 1926, in Yorktown, to the late Joseph A. and Matilda Baingo Zaiontz. He was a farmer and rancher and member of Knights of Columbus, fourth degree, and Holy Cross Catholic Church.
Survivors: sisters, Rita Renault, Bernadette Spies, Evelyn Janyssek, and Clara Kaiser, all of Yorktown; and brothers, Robert Zaiontz, Marvin Zaiontz, Melvin Zaiontz, and William Zaiontz, all of Yorktown, Francis Zaiontz and Patrick Zaiontz, both of Columbus, Miss., Alfred Zaiontz of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and Eugene Zaiontz of Victoria.
Preceded in death by: brothers, Thomas Zaiontz and Joseph Zaiontz.
A rosary was recited Wednesday, April 21 at Lamprecht-Janssen Funeral Home Chapel. Services were Thursday at Holy Cross Catholic Church. Burial was at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery. Lamprecht-Janssen Funeral Home, Yorktown, 361-564-2277.

Ennis L. Brister Jr.

Ennis Lone Brister Jr., 54, of Cuero, died Friday, April 23, 2004.
He was born June 15, 1949, in Freer, to the late Ennis Lone Sr. and Ova Estelle Merritt Brister. He was a roughneck for Petro Chemical.
Survivors: daughters, Shannon Colwell of Conroe, Shelia Alaniz of Victoria, and Sherri Davis of Bridge City; son, Evan Lone Brister of Victoria; and 14 grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: parents; sister, Rosie Lee Brister; and one grandson.

Prentice Elizabeth Smith

Prentice Elizabeth Smith, 81, of Garland, and formerly of Cuero, died Monday, April 19, 2004.
She was born in Cuero on August 25, 1922 to the late Steven Leonard and Bessie Keith Ray. She was a homemaker.
She is survived by her daughters, Penny Gonzales of Garland and Terry Slay of Las Cruces, New Mexico; sister, Bessie (Biddie) Stahl of Yoakum; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Laudie Garrett and Hertha Bauer; and brothers, Earl Ray and Steve Ray.
Visitation was Thursday, April 22 at Freund Funeral Home. Services were Friday at the funeral home, the Rev. Dale Ordogne officiated. Burial was at Hillside Cemetery. Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, 361-275-2343.
