Christine W. Jones

Christine Williams Jones, 89, of Cuero, died Friday, June 28, 2002.
She was born March 6, 1913, in DeWitt County, to the late Riley and Sudie Griffin Williams. She was a domestic house keeper and a member of Mt. Bethany Baptist Church.
Survivors: nieces, Christine Odom and Mable Polk; and foster son, Albert Cornelius of San Antonio.
Preceded in death by: parents; sisters, Mary Jane Williams and Ora Lee Williams Porter; and brother, John Riley Williams.
Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 3 at Mt. Bethany Baptist Church, the Rev. Chester Polk officiated. Burial will be at Thomaston Cemetery in Thomaston. Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, 361-275-2343.

Adam Ramirez

Adam Ramirez, 81, of Cuero, died Saturday, June 29, 2002.
He was born September 13, 1920, in Nordheim, to the late Esteban and Jacinta Barrera Ramirez. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army, serving in WW II. He was an upholsterer and a member of Cuero VFW No. 3972 and Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.
Survivors: wife, Mary Vasquez Ramirez; daughters, Diana Hernandez and Edith Medina, both of Bay City, and Ida Gomez of Cuero; sons, Adam Steve Ramirez and Michael Gabriel Ramirez, both of Cuero; sisters, Benilde Ruiz of Cuero, Chave Bryand of Odessa, Margaret Ramirez and Estella Ramirez, both of California; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: parents; sisters, Eva Ruiz and Eugenia Bryand; and grandson, Christopher Lee Ybarra.
A rosary was recited Tuesday, July 2 at Freund Funeral Home chapel. Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, the Rev. Daniel Giorgi officiating. Burial will be at Hillside Cemetery. Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, 361-275-2343.

Mark Thomas Schumacher

Mark Thomas Schumacher, 35, of Houston, died Wednesday, June 26, 2002.
He was born January 11, 1967 in Cuero to Marvin and Peggie Schumacher.
He attended St. Michael’s School, Cuero High School, Texas A&M University, and the University of Houston School of Pharmacy in Houston. He was a registered pharmacist.
He is survived by his parents, Marvin and Peggie Schumacher of Cuero; grandmother, Amelia Castellow of Houston; fiance, Michell Cupito of Houston; brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Jacque Schumacher of Cuero; sister and brother-in-law, Sandra and Pat Anders of Cuero; nephews, Andrew Katzmark, Matthew Schumacher, Parker Schumacher of Cuero; nieces, Kendra Schumacher and Alexis Anders of Cuero; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
He is preceded in death by fraternal grandparents, Arthur and Elsie Schumacher; maternal grandfather, Tom Castellow; and cousin Allen Schumacher.
Funeral Mass was held Saturday, June 29 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Rev. Johnson Owusu-Boateng officiated. Burial was at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Cuero. Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, 361-275-2343.
Pallbearers were Thomas DeLaurier, Brian DeLaurier, Steve Greiner, Michael Johnson, Raleigh Blackwell, Scott Younker, Steve Arrendell, and Kevin Leck.
Honorary Pallbearers were his nieces and nephews.

Billie L. Culpepper

Billie Louise Culpepper, of Cuero, died Tuesday, December 31, 2002.
She was born June 19, 1921, in Charco, to the late William Restor and Eacie Mize Leeton. She was a secretary for the Beeville County Attorney, Richard Rudloph and the county judge. She moved to Cuero in 1967 and worked at Garrett Abstract, Standard Printing, A. Joe Green Company, and Walmart. She was a member of the Cuero VFW Post 3972 Auxiliary and was a Baptist.
Survivors: daughter, Rebecca Lewis and husband Bruce of Lake Jackson; special friend, Sally Lewis; and brother, Earl David Leeton of Sweeney.
Preceded in death by: first husband, Albert Curtis Cryer; second husband, Carl Alton Culpepper; and parents.
Visitation was Friday, January 3 at Freund Funeral Home chapel. Services were Saturday at the funeral home chapel. Burial was Saturday at Glenwood Cemetery in Beeville. Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, 361-275-2343.

Erwin R. Staehr

Erwin R. Staehr, 83, of Cuero, died Thursday, January 2, 2003.
He was born in Yoakum on September 2, 1919 to the late Gerhard H. and Elsie Schumacher Staehr. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II. He was a Building Trades teacher and school bus driver for the Cuero ISD for over 35 years. He was a former director of the DeWitt County Farm Bureau and a former director of the DeWitt R.E.A. He was a member of the Texas Retired Teachers Assn., American Legion in Shiner, Cuero VFW Post #3972, Cuero Sports Booster Club, and Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Cuero.
He is survived by wife Alice H. Menke Staehr of Concrete; daughters, Sue Ann Bennett of Cedar Park and Betty Jo Roberts of Austin; sister, Elleen Leist of Yoakum; brother, Fred Staehr of Concrete; and three grandchildren
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation was Friday, January 3 at Freund Funeral Home. Funeral services were Saturday at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Yoakum, Rev. Gary Goodson officiated. Burial was at Memory Gardens in Cuero. Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, 361-275-2343.
Pallbearers: Fred Staehr Jr., Douglas Leist, Steve Kurtz Jr., John Johnson, Tommy Blake, David Lochte, and Michael Lochte.
Memorials: Holy Cross Lutheran Church of Yoakum or the Alzheimer’s Association.

Mary S. Figueroa

Mary Soto Figueroa, 83, of Cuero, died Tuesday, December 31, 2002.
She was born July 23, 1919, in Port Lavaca to the late Simon G. and Azely Whitney Soto. She was a homemaker.
Survivors: son, Jesse Figueroa of Wilmington, North Carolina; ten grandchildren including Mark Crawley, Allen Crawley, and Jason Figueroa, all of Cuero; and 8 great-grandchildren.
Sher was preceded in death by her husband, Cruz Figueroa Sr.; daughter, Mary S. Rangel; sons, Cruz Figueroa Jr. and John Henry Figueroa; parents; seven sisters; and five brothers.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, 361-275-2343.

Anita O. Serbantes

Anita Olguin Serbantes, 86, of Cuero, died Friday, January 3, 2003.
She was born July 20, 1916, in Cuero, to the late Marcelo and Marcela Gonzales Olguin. She was a homemaker and a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church of Cuero.
Survivors: daughters, Tomasa Copado of Michigan, Mary Reyna of Victoria, Janie Morales and Gloria Olguin, both of Cuero; sons, Frank Gamez, Benny Gamez, Jesse Gamez, and Ernest Gamez, all of Cuero, and Domingo Gamez of Victoria; brother, Manuel Olguin of Cuero; 37 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: husband, Jose Serbantes; sons, Ruben Gamez, Ernest Gamez Jr. and Joe Louis Gamez; parents; sisters, Stephanie Olguin, Antonia Sustita and Maria Rodriguez; brothers, Mario Olguin, Pedro Olguin and Jose Olguin; and one great-grandchild.
A rosary was recited Sunday, January 5 at Freund Funeral Home chapel. Services were Monday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, Father Michael Lyons officiated. Burial was at San Pedro Cemetery in Concrete. Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, 361-275-2343.

Victor A. Brier Sr.

Victor A. Brier Sr., 82, of Cuero, died Saturday, January 4, 2003.
He was born October 28, 1920, in Lavaca County, to the late Paul F. and Mary Alice Campion Brier. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II. He worked for Arkla Gas Company for many years. He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church.
Survivors: wife, Eunice Guinn Brier of Cuero; daughter, Nancy Brier O'Neal of Cuero; son, Victor "Bubba" Brier Jr. of Brenham; sister, Julie Whiddon of Port Arthur; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: parents; sister, Mary Agnes Moore; and brothers, John Brier, Joe Brier, and Leo Brier.
A rosary was recited Monday, January 6 at Freund Funeral Home chapel. Services were Tuesday at the funeral home chapel, Father Johnson Owusu-Boateng and Dr. Glenn Robertson officiated. Burial was at Hillside Cemetery. Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, 361-275-2343.

Paul Allen Semper

Paul Allen Semper, 38, of Sanford, North Carolina, and formerly of Cuero, died July 4, 2003.
He was born July 6, 1964 in Cuero to Leo and Carlyn Hoefling Semper. He graduated from Cuero High School where he received the Pete Bluntzer Award and the John Philip Souza Award. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering with Magna Cum Laude honors from Texas A&M University. He received his Masters Degree from the University of Florida. He served in the U. S. Navy as a lieutenant and taught in the Nuclear Power School in Orlando, Florida. He was a production Superintendent for the Dupont Plant in Fayetteville, North Carolina. He played with the bands Crossfire, Mirage, and Rhythm of the Road. He was a member of the TPA, the Order of the Sons of Hermann, and First Baptist Church in Cuero.
He is survived by his wife, Lisa Adams Semper of Sanford, North Carolina; son, Christopher Paul Semper of Sanford, North Carolina; parents; and sister, Christie Kahlich of Cuero.
Visitation was Saturday, July 5 at Freund Funeral Home Chapel. Services were Sunday, July 6 at First Baptist Church, Dr. Glenn Robertson and Rev. Bob Hairst officiated. Burial was at Hillside Cemetery in Cuero. Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, 361-275-2343.

Frank B. Tyl

Frank Benjamin Tyl, 81, of Cuero, died Monday, June 30, 2003.
He was born September 12, 1921, in Texarkana, to the late Frank Edward and Phillamina Duyka Tyl. He was a soil conservation service inspector for the government and member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Cuero and TPA.
Survivors: daughter, Mary Ruby of Seguin; son, Danny Tyl of Cuero; sisters, Julia Zamora, Helen Bruck, and Margaret Zamora, all of Texarkana, Christine Hobbs of Garland, Evelyn Horn of Monroe, Louisiana, and Katherine Bush; brother, the Rev. Albert Tyl of Fort Worth; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: wife, Mary Louise McGonigill Tyl; daughter, Peggy Diane Tyl; sons, Sonny Tyl and Michael David Tyl; parents; and brothers, Robert Tyl, Jerry Tyl, and Emil Tyl.

Helen M. West

Helen Marie West, 88, of Andrews, Indiana, and formerly of Pandora, Cuero, and Leming, died Sunday, July 6, 2003.
She was born in Wilson County on February 12, 1915 to the late Gerhardt and Johanna Geerken. She was a senior citizen driver, a newspaper carrier for San Antonio Light and Express, and a housewife.
She is survived by her step-daughter, Darlene Schneider of San Antonio; son, Joseph West of Andrews, Indiana; step-son, Harold Dean of Austin; three grandchildren; 13 step-grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by husband, Franklin West; parents; step-sons, Junior West, Gilford West, Marshal West, and Llyord E. West; and brothers, Henry C. Geerken and Ernest O. Geerken.
Visitation was Tuesday, July 8 at Freund Funeral Home. Services are Wednesday, July 9 at 2 p.m. at the funeral home chapel, with Rev. Bill Gleeson officiating. Burial will be at Denhawken Cemetery in Pandora. Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, 361-275-2343.

Services for Dorothy Schley, 71, of Yorktown, who died Friday, were Sunday, July 6 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, the Revs. Patti Byrne and Ann Koopmann officiated. Burial was at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery. Lamprecht-Janssen Funeral Home, Yorktown, 361-564-2277.

Elmer Louis Yaws, Sr.

Elmer Louis Yaws, Sr., age 71 of El Campo, died Sunday, June 16, 2002 in El Campo following an extended illness. He was born on June 26, 1930 in Cuero, the son of the late Thomas Earl Yaws, Sr. and Vinnie Leola Kirby Yaws.
Mr. Yaws was a former resident of the Cheapside Community in DeWitt County and a resident of El Campo for the past six months. He was employed as a operator for Alcoa Aluminum. He enjoyed ranching, woodworking, and gardening. Mr. Yaws was a Jehovah’s Witness.
Funeral Services were Wednesday, June 19 at Wharton Funeral Home, Mr. David Good and Mr. Carl Acord officiated. Interment followed at Wharton City Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Jane Yaws of El Campo; daughter, Connie Collins of El Campo; son, Elmer Louis Yaws, Jr. of Wharton; sister, Lola Edwards of Baytown; brother, Thomas Yaws, Jr. of Pasadena; six grandchildren; and one great grandchild.
Pallbearers are Timothy Yaws, David Collins, Gilbert Chapa, Spidro Rodriguez, Dave Hansen, and Woody Sales.
