Alice Miles
1935-2003
SWEETWATER -- Alice Miles, a native of Loraine, died Saturday, March 29, in Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene.
Funeral service for Mrs. Miles 68, was set for 3 p.m. today in the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Larry Garnto and Dr. Harvey Tingle officiating. Burial will follow in the Garden of Memories under the direction of Cate-Spencer and Trent Funeral Home.
Born March 22, 1935 in Loraine, she married Kenneth Miles on Aug. 23, 1952 in Roscoe. He died in 1994.
Mrs. Miles was co-owner of Miles Auto Sales, was a member of the First Salem Lutheran Church and attended the First Baptist Church in Sweetwater since 1993.
Survivors include two sons, Doyle Miles and Billy Miles, both of Sweetwater; a daughter, Mary Ann Burrough of Sweetwater; and four grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials to the American Cancer Society or to the American Heart Association.

Jerry Baker
1948-2003
SUMMERFIELD, Fla. -- Jerry D. Baker, brother of three Snyder residents, died Friday, March 28, at his residence after a long illness.
A memorial service for Mr. Baker, 54, will be held in Kingston, Okla.
A native of San Saba, Mr. Baker moved from Kingston to Summerfield in 1995.
A son, Jerry D. Baker Jr., and his father, Authur Gail Baker, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Cheryl Baker of the home; his mother, Martha Baker of Kingston; two sons, Joseph Baker of Dallas and Samuel Baker of Sweetwater; a daughter, Tabitha Davis of Dallas; six brothers, Danny Baker of Snyder, Freddy Baker of Summerfield, Gail Baker Jr. of Amarillo, Robert Baker, David Baker and Tommy Baker, all of Kingston; four sisters, Martha Neves and Betty Baker, both of Snyder, Linda Mandrel of Enos, Okla., Mary Groeber of Duncan, Okla.; and seven grandchildren.

Hunter twins
Infants
ABILENE -- Christopher Lamonte Hunter and Eric Rashurn Hunter Jr., the grandchildren of Melvin Cobb of Snyder, died Saturday, March 29, in an Abilene hospital.
Graveside service is set for 11 a.m. Thursday in the Elliott-Hamil Garden of Memories.
Survivors also include their parents, Eric Hunter and Timika White of Abilene; maternal grandmother, Vanessa Sterlings of Fort Worth; and paternal grandparents, Lafella Hunter and Phillip Vaughn of Abilene.

Rev. Thomas Hall
1922-2003
BROWNFIELD -- The Rev. Thomas L. Hall, a former Scurry County resident, died this morning in Lubbock.
Funeral service for Rev. Hall, 80, is set for 10:30 a.m. Friday in the Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Clarence Branch officiating. Burial will follow in the Fluvanna Cemetery under the direction of Brownfield Funeral Home.
Born June 10, 1922 in Clarkton, Mo., he was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving in Iwo Jima. He married Mary Helen Harris on Oct. 27, 1945 in Gideon, Mo. She died Nov. 6, 1996.
He also was preceded in death by a son, Bobby Hall, in 1980.
A 1951 graduate of Oklahoma A&M and a 1962 graduate of Hardin-Simmons University, Rev. Hall pastored churches in Missouri and at Potosi.
He moved to Fluvanna in 1963 before moving to Snyder in 1973. In 1974, he moved to Brownfield where he was employed with the ASCS office while also serving as pastor of the Gomez Baptist Church, retiring in 1986.
Rev. Hall was a charter member of the Potosi Baptist 100 Club and a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Brownfield.
Survivors include a son, Thomas L. Hall Jr. of Cantebury, Conn.; a daughter, Linda Cox of Canadian; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Debbie Mumme
1948-2003
SLATON -- Debbie Cade Mumme, the mother of Julie Mumme of Gail, died Wednesday, April 2, in Lubbock after a brief illness.
Funeral service for Mrs. Mumme, 54, is set for 2 p.m. Friday in Slaton’s First United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Englewood Cemetery.
Born July 22, 1948 in Lubbock, she was a 1967 graduate of Cooper High School and earned her bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees from Texas Tech. She was a professor of family and consumer science at Tech.
She married Bill Mumme on June 17, 1967 in Woodrow. Mrs. Mumme had also taught in Slaton, Nazareth, Uvalde and in Hondo.
Survivors also include her husband, Bill Mumme of Lubbock; her parents, Dick and Kathryn Cade of Slaton; and two sisters, Cindy Ferguson of Lubbock and Marsha Ganley of Philadelphia.

Roberta Clark
1918-2003
PORT TOWNSEND, Wash. -- Roberta M. Clark, sister of Lillie Sullivan of Brownfield and a former longtime resident of Snyder and Ira, died Monday, March 28, at her home. She was 84 years old.
Following cremation, a private inurnment was to be held at Greenwood Cemetery in Chimacum, Wash.
Born Oct. 1, 1918 in Fisher County, she married Peter Clark May 11, 1960. He died Nov. 4, 1998.
Mrs. Clark worked for Convair Aircraft in San Diego, Calif., during World War II and later worked for Puhlman Variety Store as a buyer/accountant. She also worked in Seattle as a financial administrator for Alaskan Automotive Parts and retired as manager and accountant for a major architectural firm in Seattle. She lived on Bainbridge Island before moving to Port Townsend.
Survivors include her brother, Clifton McCleskey of Charlottesville, Va.; another sister, Eula Bustetter of Yakima, Wash., and several nieces and nephews.

Giles Kemp
1929-2003
HASKELL -- Graveside service for Giles Kemp, 73, is set for 3 p.m. Saturday in the Willow Cemetery. The Rev. Allen Brooks will officiate and arrangements are under the direction of Holden-McCauley Funeral Home.
Mr. Kemp, 73, died Thursday, April 3, in Haskell.
Born Oct. 26, 1929 in Haskell, Mr. Kemp was a retired farmer and rancher and a member of the First United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Johnny Giles and Mary Kemp.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Kemp of Haskell; a son and daughter-in-law, Giles B. and Dee Kemp of Snyder; three daughters and sons-in-law, Kerry and Jim Simpson of Burleson, Donna and Roy Rifenburg of Merkel and Kathy and Kelly Copeland of Slaton; a brother, Dr. William Kemp of Haskell; six grandchildren, Joshua and Jacob Kemp of Snyder, Ben and Samantha Simpson of Burleson and Kelsey and Kasey Copeland of Slaton.

Hugh Kattes
1927-2003
WINNSBORO -- Hugh Harris Kattes, father of David Kattes of Snyder, died Wednesday, April 2, in a Tyler hospital .
Service for Mr. Kattes, 75, is set for 11 a.m. Saturday in Beaty Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Charles Etheridge officiating. Burial will follow the Lee Cemetery in Winnsboro.
Born Sept. 8, 1927 in Richland Springs, he married Mildred F. Kattes on Feb. 7, 1948.
Mr. Kattes served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was retired from Ford Tractor. He was a member of the Pine Street Baptist Church and the 2nd Milers Sunday School Class.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Rex and Ruby Lee Kattes; and one brother and three sisters.
Survivors also include his wife, Mildred Kattes of Winnesboro; a daughter, Evelyn Kattes of Sulphur Springs; a brother, J.B. Kattes of Longview; a sister, Pauline Smith of Keene; a daughter-in-law, Molly Kattes of Snyder; two grandchildren, Cari Limmer and her husband, Bryan, and Kelly Stowers; and four great-grandchildren, Griffin Limmer, Bailey Limmer, Hannah Limmer and Madelyn Stowers.
The family suggests memorials to the Pine Street Baptist Church or the American Cancer Society.

Ona Spence
1917-2003
Ona Mae Spence, longtime Scurry County resident, died Friday, March 21, in Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock after a lengthy illness.
Funeral service for Mrs. Spence, 86, was set for 3:30 p.m. today in the First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Buddy Payne, pastor, was to officiate. Burial was to follow in Hillside Memorial Gardens under the direction of Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.
Born March 6, 1917 in Van Zant County, she married Leonard Spence in 1939.
She was preceded in death by her parents, E.T. and Odessa Belle Bishop; three sisters; and two brothers.
Mrs. Spence moved to Scurry County in 1939 and has resided here except for a few years. She returned to Snyder in 1945 and has been a landowner in Scurry County for more than half a century and has been involved in cotton production.
She was a homemaker and a member of the First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Marshall Spence and Jim Spence and wife Janet, all of Snyder; two daughters and sons-in-law, Peggy and Bobby Smith of Brownwood and Margaret and George McClone of Lake City, Colo.; two sisters, Lois Varnon of Dallas and Mona Lee Ramsey of Emory; eight grandchildren, Mark Kimmel, Janice Warren, Stephen Kimmel, Ann Scamardo, Dr. Wesley Smith, Allan Smith, Jennifer Seilhant and Brian Spence; 16 great-grandchildren, Paige, Andrew, Ashley and Megan Kimmel, Stephanie and Michael Warren, Kenna, Micah Jo, Rebecca and Seraiah Scamardo, Elizabeth, Michelle, Melissa and Alex Smith and Jayla Seilhant and Ethan Spence.
Other Snyder relatives are Nell Spence, Linda Cozart, Rhylene Stoker, Don Stoker and Brooke Mackey.
