Warder Novak
1918-2004
ABILENE -- Warder K. Novak, the first minister for the 37th Street Church of Christ in Snyder, died Thursday, April 1, in Abilene after a lengthy illness.
Funeral service for Mr. Novak, 85, is set for 3 p.m. Sunday in the Hillcrest Church of Christ. Arrangements are under the direction of Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home.
Born Dec. 28, 1918 in Wichita, Kan., he was a minister for more than 50 years and lived in Snyder from 1953-55. He also taught at the Nashville School of Preaching. Abilene Christian University honored Mr. Novak in 1992 for his years of service.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Lottie Novak of Abilene; four daughters, Kay Hawkins, Cheryl Ginnings, Carolyn Jones and Reci Schmellick; two sisters, Frances Stivers and La Vera Leopard; a brother, Willard Novak; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials to the Hillcrest Church of Christ, Hospice of the Big Country or to a favorite charity.

Betty Hatfield
1930-2003
Betty Hatfield of Snyder died Thursday, May 8, in Cogdell Memorial Hospital after a sudden illness.
Graveside service for Mrs. Hatfield, 72, is set for 4 p.m. Wednesday in the Snyder Cemetery with Steven Pena, pastor of the First Assembly of God Church, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.
Born Aug. 16, 1930 in Kaw City, Okla., she married John Hatfield on Jan. 10, 1987 in Snyder. She was a nurse at the Lamesa hospital for a number of years and was a member of Snyder’s First Assembly of God Church.
Survivors include her husband, John Hatfield of Snyder; a daughter, Natosha Lee of Hendersonville, Ky., a sister, Sadie Cress of Hobbs, N.M.; and three brothers, Jack Robinson of Mexico Beach, Fla., Bill Robinson and Bobby Robinson, both of Newkirk, Okla.

Lloyd Ainsworth
1910-2003
Lloyd Ainsworth, longtime Scurry County resident, died Sunday, May 11, in Snyder Oaks Care Center after a lengthy illness.
Services for Mr. Ainsworth, 93, are pending at Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.
Mr. Ainsworth, born May 2, 1910, was a retired Fluvanna area farmer.
Survivors include his wife, Maebelle Ainsworth of Snyder; a brother, Pat Ainsworth of Snyder; a granddaughter, Carrie Keith of Austin; and a grandson, Chad Keith of Austin.

Mrs. Ainsworth
1910-2004
Maybelle Ainsworth, longtime Scurry County resident, died Sunday, May 2, in Snyder Oaks Care Center after a lengthy illness.
Funeral service for Mrs. Ainsworth, 93, is set for 2 p.m. Friday in the Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home Chapel. Bruce Smith will officiate. Burial will follow in the Fluvanna Cemetery.
Born Nov. 27, 1910 in Wood County, she was married to Lloyd Ainsworth who died May 11, 2003.
A homemaker, Mrs. Ainsworth was a longtime Fluvanna area resident.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Ellen Keith, on Jan. 13, 1999; two brothers, Bill and J.C. Tucker; and a sister, Janelle Nanny.
Survivors include two grandchildren, Kerrie Keith and Chad Keith, both of Austin; and a sister, Margarette Jacobs of Odessa.

Imogene Johnson
1930-2003
ABILENE -- Imogene Johnson, the mother of Ronda Haire of Snyder, died Saturday, May 10, in an Abilene care center.
Funeral service for Mrs. Johnson, 73, is set for 2 p.m. Tuesday in the First Baptist Church with the Revs. Bill Ballou and Mark McMillan officiating. Burial will follow in the Elmwood Memorial Park under the direction of Elmwood Funeral Home.
Born April 5, 1930 in Knott, she attended school in Big Spring and Irving. Following graduation from Abilene High in 1947, she attended Hardin-Simmons and married Adron C. Johnson on Aug. 22, 1947 in Abilene.
A longtime resident of Stamford, she worked as secretary for the First Baptist Church and for Stamford Electric Co-op for 20 years. After moving to Abilene, Mrs. Johnson was secretary at the University Baptist Church for one year. She logged 2,750 hours of volunteer service with the Hendrick Hospital Auxiliary.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter P. and Grade Barlow; a brother, James Walter Barlow; and a sister, Lula Vee Owsley.
Survivors include her husband Adron “A.C.” Johnson of Abilene; a son and daughter-in-law, Russell and Karen Johnson of Midland; a son-in-law, Jerry Haire of Snyder; a sister, Pat Owsley of Phenix City, Ala.; a brother Bill Barlow of Colorado City; a sister-in-law, Hazel Stein of Corpus Christi; and five grandchildren, Austin and Molly Haire, Taylor, Travis and Trevor Johnson.
The family requests memorials to the Hendrick Hospital Auxiliary, 1242 19th Street in Abilene, 79601; or to the First Baptist Church Pricilla Class, 1333 N. 3rd Street in Abilene, 79601.

Verna Knight
1907-2003
Verna Knight, longtime Snyder resident, died Tuesday, May 13, in Cogdell Memorial Hospital.
Graveside service for Mrs. Knight, 95, is set for 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Ira Cemetery. The Rev. Buddy Payne, pastor of First United Methodist Church in Snyder, will officiate.
Born May 18, 1907 in Buffalo Gap, she married John Wilson in 1927. He died in 1938. She married T.B. “Bick” Knight in 1941. He died in 1977. She was a homemaker and a member of the Crusaders Sunday School Class.
Survivors include a daughter, Bobbie Rose of Snyder; a brother, R.T. Pippin of Plains; a granddaughter, Sharlot Sparlin of Snyder; two great-grandsons, Marc Sparlin of Snyder and Darin Sparlin of Dallas; a great-granddaughter, Berkley Sparlin of Dallas; a niece, Marilyn Ellison of Plains; and a nephew, John Pippin of Cincinnati, Ohio.

Myrtle Brannon
1913-2003
MOORE, Okla. -- Myrtle Annice Brannon, the sister of Opal Nicks of Snyder, died Saturday, May 10, at her home in Moore.
Graveside service for Mrs. Brannon, 89, was set for 2 p.m. today in the Rosemound Cemetery in Waco.
Survivors also include three sons, Bud Brannon of Midlothian, Jere Brannon of Linden and Bobby Brannon of Bivins; three daughters, Juanita Kellough of Waco, Pat Bolin of Cypress and Gena Smith of Riesel; 22 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Wesley Peters
1958-2003
ODESSA -- Wesley Peters, the brother of two Snyder residents, died Saturday, May 10, in Medical Center Hospital.
Funeral service for Mr. Peters, 44, was set for 2 p.m. today in Sunset Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Dewey Blevins officiating.
Born in Hobbs, N.M., Mr. Peters lived in Gardendale and was a former employee of Tuboscope and Cotton’s Inspection.
Survivors include two sons, Adam and Jason Peters of Odessa; his mother Pegge Alcorn of Gardendale; a brother, Ronald Randolph of Snyder; a sister, Nelda Randolph of Snyder; and one grandchild.

Bob Hardman
1928-2003
LAMESA - Robert Edward “Bob” Hardman, the father of Barbara Ashby of Snyder, died Monday, May 12, in Medical Arts Hospital.
Funeral service for Mr. Hardman, 74, was set for 10 a.m. today in the First Baptist Church Chapel with the Rev. Randy Hardman officiating. Burial will follow in the Borden County Cemetery under the direction of Branon Funeral Home.
Born Sept. 18, 1928 in Avery, Tex., he married Estelle Middlebrook on March 3, 1952 in Avery.
A U.S. Army veteran of the Korean conflict, Mr. Ashby was a member of the First Baptist Church and had worked in the oil well service industry.
Survivors include his wife, Estelle Hardman of Lamesa; another daughter and her husband, Elton and Katie Stary of Plainview; a son-in-law, Mac Ashby of Snyder; a son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Debra Hardman of Gail; a brother and his wife, Harry and Irvelyn Hardman of Avery; a sister and her husband, Liz and Albert McPeak of Lamesa; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Benny Benavidez
1966-2003
HAMLIN – Funeral service for Benito “Benny” Benavidez of Snyder was set for 2 p.m. today in the Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Burial was to follow in Hamlin Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Foster-Adams Funeral Home.
Mr. Benavidez, 36, died Saturday, May 10, in Colorado City. Born May 19, 1966 in Rotan, he graduated from Aspermont High School and was married Margarita Salazar Benito. He was a Catholic and an employee of Weatherford-LEAMCO in Snyder.
Survivors include his wife, Margarita Benavidez; a son, Adrian Benavidez; two daughters, Monica and Lisa Benavidez; his parents, Sebastian and Mary Benavidez; four brothers, Jesse, David, Don and Adam Benavidez; and a sister, Terry Benavidez.
