Roswell Rigsby
1910-2002
Roswell Rigsby was born on Murry St., Hot Springs, Garland County, Arkansas Aug. 22, 1910 to Arthur Hiram and Mary Susannah Waite Rigsby, the second child of four children.
After a brief move to Port Lavaca, Texas, the family returned to Garland Co., Arkansas and set up home at Lousdale. There, at the onset of WWI, the family lived the first winter back in a one room log cabin on Roswell’s grandfather (John H. Rigsby) farm.
Roswell recalled that they nearly starved that winter of 1916, but the next summer they made abundant crop and his mother preserved vegetables and fruits. That summer they also added a room to the log home.
Roswell began his education at Sunny Fork school, a one-room school located in the Smith Creek community. Although prior to living on the farm the family had been members of the ME Church South, the family joined Smith Creek Missionary Baptist Church where all Rigsby family attended. At Smith Creek, Roswell was baptized and came to the Lord. The baptism was held behind the church at the banks of the south fork of the Saline River.
At age 10 the family moved into Hot Springs where Arthur Hiram (“Hi”) opened Mutt & Jeff Cleaners. Roswell’s education continued at Jones School and his graduation at Hot Springs High School in Spring 1928.
At Hot Springs, Roswell started his work and business career. First he became a “newspaper boy” selling papers for the “Hot Springs New Era” and the “Sentinel Record.” Roswell continued this job into high school. Roswell also caddied at the Hot Springs County Club during high school. He also worked for his dad in the cleaners, both pressing and making deliveries.
In the fall 1928 the family moved to Lamesa, Texas. In 1929, Roswell moved to Big Spring, Texas and worked for R&R Theatres. It was the depression and daddy had one suit and pair of shoes. Roswell related that he had to have a job and he went each day to see Mr. Robb at R&R. Every night he would polish his shoes and press his suit. Eventually Mr. Robb said, “Get this boy an usher’s uniform.”
Roswell left R&R and came to Snyder in 1931 and joined the family in Snyder in their business, “Rigsby Café” and “Rigsby Hotel.” Their business was located just off the Snyder square at what is now the southeast part of Snyder National Bank and the lot to the east. The hotel had rooms across the street. During the Depression, the Rigsby Café remained open 24 hours a day.
In 1936, Roswell married the girl of his life, Mavis Maxine Jenkins. Mavis had just been elected Queen of Scurry County in celebration of the Texas Centennial. The couple wedded in Big Spring July 4, 1936. Roswell and Mavis wee partners from then forward.
Roswell purchased and ran a vending and record business. Roswell, Mavis and their son, Thomas, traveled daily to service their route.
In the early 1950s, Roswell and Mavis sold the vending route and purchased prairie land located now at 200 Coliseum Drive. There they built Traveler’s Inn Courts.
In the early 1960s Roswell and then Mavis studied under R.W. “Dick” Webb, a local attorney and friend, and began their real estate and tax preparation careers. From that point forward Roswell and Mavis were inseparable. They were lovers, friends and business partners. They never went anywhere alone, but as a couple.
In March, 1993 Mavis died at age 73. Since that time Roswell continued to keep his tax and real estate business open. Roswell Rigsby was a good man, a just man and his word was his bond.
Roswell was predeceased by his father, A.H. Rigsby, in August 1957; his mother, Mary S. Rigsby, in February 1987; his sister, Laura M. Wilhelm, in 1960; his younger brother, Carlos Theo Rigsby, in 1981.
