John Book
1929-2003
John B. Book, a resident of Snyder since 1957, died Monday, Feb. 10, in Hill Country Memorial Hospital in Fredericksburg after a sudden illness.
Funeral service for Mr. Book, 73, is set for 2 p.m. Thursday in the Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home Chapel. Dr. Tommy Culwell, pastor of Colonial Hill Baptist Church, will officiate.
Graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Maple Hill Cemetery in Fairfield, Ill.
Born Sept. 15, 1929 in Fairfield, he married Norma Maricle on July 24, 1949 in Fairfield. He served in the Air Branch of the U.S. Navy from 1948-50 and was a lifetime member of the VFW.
Mr. Book moved from Fairfield to Anson in 1953 and to Snyder in 1957. He was employed at the Texaco Fuller Gas plant, retiring in 1989 as assistant plant superintendent.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Fred Book, in 1997.
Survivors include his wife, Norma Book of Snyder; two daughters, Dee Ann Carroll of Lubbock and Jo Book of San Antonio; a son, Terry Book of San Antonio; two brothers, George Book of Kingsland and Jim Book of Batavia, Ill.; three sisters, Katie Black, Martha Phillips and Shirley Bell, all of Fairfield; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two step great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 6:30 to 8 this evening at Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.

Joe Ellington
1924-2003
Joe Ellington, longtime Snyder resident, died Saturday, Aug. 23, in Hendrick Hospice Care Center in Abilene.
Funeral service for Mr. Ellington, 79, was set for 4 p.m. today in the East Side Church of Christ. Tom Holcomb, minister, was to officiate. Burial was to follow in Hillside Memorial Gardens under the direction of Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.
Born May 11, 1924 in Nelson, Okla., he moved to Texas as a boy. He married Juanita Martin on Nov. 17, 1945 in Snyder. He served as a machinist mate in the U.S. Navy from 1943-46.
Mr. Ellington had been co-owner of D&D Auto Supply since 1969. He was a past-president of the Snyder Kiwanis Club and was a member of the East Side Church of Christ.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Henry Ellington and Rex Ellington; two sisters, Sally Yeager and Estelle Pitts; a granddaughter, Amy Rodgers; and a great-grandson, Quattro Keaton.
Survivors include his wife, Jaunita Ellington of Snyder; three daughters and sons-in-law, Connie and Allen Keaton and Jennifer and Rex Townsley, all of Abilene, and Deborah and Randy Rodgers of Midland; two brothers and sisters-in-law, B.C. and Ruth Ellington of Snyder and Bill and Kathey Ellington of Hurst; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Bertie Sandlin
1904-2003
Ella Bertie Sandlin, a resident of Scurry County since 1924, died Sunday, Aug. 24, in Snyder Healthcare Center after a lengthy illness.
Graveside service for Mrs. Sandlin, 98, is set for 10 a.m. Tuesday in Hillside Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Charles Day, pastor of Ave. D Baptist Church, will officiate. Arrangements are under the direction of Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.
Born Nov. 7, 1904 in New Boston in Bowie County, her family settled in the Hermleigh community in 1924. She married Jim Stringer in 1927. He died in 1938. She married John Crayton Sandlin in 1963. He died in 1981. She also was preceded in death by her parents, Willie and Effie King; two brothers, Jesse and Junior King; and a sister, Eula Daniels.
Mrs. Sandlin was a sales clerk and seamstress for a number of years.
Survivors include three stepchildren, Duane Sandlin and wife Patria of Cedar Point, Billie Larkhom of Dallas and Pat O’Neil of Oregon; a sister, Pearl Cagle of Snyder; two brothers, Jake King of Snyder and J.W. King and wife Lucille of Lubbock; five nieces and their spouses, Frances and Pete Pitner of Snyder, Ozane and James Beaver of Sweetwater; Barbara and Billy Rinehart of Arlington, Jeanneane and Eddie Watson of Brownwood and Linda Elam; five nephews, Jesse King of Pasadena, James King and wife Gayle of Austin, Col. Ted King and wife Darla of Ohio, Bobby King of Snyder and Jerry King.
The family suggests memorials to the Odyssey Healthcare Hospice, 1510 S. Gregg in Big Spring, 79720; Ave. D. Baptist Church, 324 30th in Snyder; or to a favorite charity.

Vada Burleson
1911-2003
Vada Mae Burleson, a lifelong resident of Scurry County, died Sunday, Aug. 24, in Snyder Healthcare Center after a lengthy illness.
Services for Mrs. Burleson, 92, are tentatively set for 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Wright Colonial Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Tom Woodard, pastor of Trinity United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will follow in Snyder Cemetery.
Born May 16, 1911 in the Loyd Mountain Community, she married Jeff Woodward “Jack” Burleson in 1927 in Snyder. He died in September, 1959. She married James Curtis Terry on Feb. 2, 1989 in Snyder. He died in January, 2003.
Mrs. Burleson, a charter member of Trinity United Methodist Church, had worked for the Social Security Administration and for Cogdell Memorial Hospital. She was a member of the Snyder Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star.
She also was preceded in death by two sons, J.W. Burleson and Edward M. Burleson; two sisters, Geraldine Hightower and Peggy Westbrook; and two brothers, Elton Toby Morrow and O.L. Morrow.
Survivors include two sisters, Olline Shilling of Winnfield, La., and Bobby Jean Hale of Granbury; two grandsons, Bruce Burleson of Snyder and Jack Burleson of Lubbock; a granddaughter, Kay Anderson of Athens, Tenn.; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Taylor Oakland
1997-2003
ROTAN -- Taylor Ryan Oakland, 5, died Friday, Aug. 22, at his home in Robert Lee.
Funeral service is set for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the First Baptist Church in Rotan with Ward Hayes and Corkey Wells officiating. Interment will follow in the Belvieu Cemetery under the direction of Weathersbee-Ray Funeral Home.
Born Nov. 16, 1997 in Topeka, Kan., he was preceded in death by an uncle, Ryan Oakland.
Survivors include his mother, Heather Randolph of Robert Lee; his father, Shawn Oakland of Colorado; a brother, Nick Owens of Aurora, Colo.; a sister, Alyssa Owens of Aurora, Colo.; his grandparents, Lou Ferrell of Robert Lee, Bruce Randolph of Snyder, Richard Oakland of Billings, Mont., and Tom and Judy Madigan of Rosell, Ill.; two aunts, Amanda Ferrell of Rotan and Amber Ferrell of Robert Lee; an uncle, Randy Randolph of Snyder.

Carol Birkenfeld
1937-2003
NAZARETH -- Services are pending for Carol Birkenfeld, 66, who died Sunday, Aug. 24, at his home in Nazareth after a lengthy illness.
Born March 2, 1937 in Rhineland, Tex., he was a 1955 graduate of Nazareth High School. A U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, he married Mildred Fetsch on June 1, 1965 in Hereford.
Mr. Birkenfeld was a farmer and rancher who was preceded in death by his father, Chris Birkenfeld; a brother, Clarence Birkenfeld; and a son, Paul Birkenfeld in 1989.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred Birkenfeld of Nazareth; his mother, Rose Birkenfeld of Nazareth; four sons and daughters-in-law, Patrick and Susan Birkenfeld of Snyder; Phillip and Mary Birkenfeld of Amarillo; Leroy and Asia Birkenfeld of Dimmitt and Chris Birkenfeld of Nazareth; three daughters and sons-in-law, Patsy and Marty Wells of Amarillo, Linda and Luis Tafoya of Albuquerque, N.M., and Christy and Shawn Christian of Amarillo; four brothers; two sisters; and 14 grandchildren, including Brandy, Shade and Brittany Birkenfeld of Snyder.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Peggy Roberts
1924-2003
BIG SPRING -- Emily “Peggy” Roberts, a former Snyder resident, died Friday, Aug. 22, at her home in Big Spring after a long illness.
A private memorial service for Mrs. Roberts, 78, will be held at a later date under the direction of Myers and Smith Funeral Home.
Born Sept. 19, 1924 in Meeker, Colo., she had lived in Snyder from 1972 until 1997 when she moved to Big Spring. Mrs. Roberts was a homemaker and a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
She married Edgar R. Roberts on Sept. 28, 1946 in Elko, Nev., and he died Nov. 30, 1995. She also was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.
Survivors include two sons, Daniel Roberts of Big Spring and Alan Roberts of Clyde; two daughters, Irene Jackson of Lubbock and Helen Fairless of Delta, Utah; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Vada Burleson
1911-2003

NAZARETH -- Carol Birkenfeld, 66, died Sunday, Aug. 24, at his home in Nazareth after a lengthy illness.
Rosary is set for 6 this evening in the CCD Building in Nazareth. Funeral service is set for 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Holy Family Catholic Church with Fr. John Kodankandath officiating. Burial will follow in the Holy Family Cemetery under the direction of Foskey-Lilley-McGill Funeral Home.
