Lucille Donohue Hughes
Funeral services for Lucille Donohue Hughes, 84, of Canton were held at 12 p.m. Monday, Feb. 9, at Eubank Funeral Home Chapel in Canton with the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating.
Interment was in Cool Springs Cemetery in Van Zandt County with James Worsham, Robert Fugate, Robin Fugate, Tim Fugate, Tommy Berry and Seth Livingston serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Christopher Fugate, Stephen Fugate, Hunter Fugate and Logan Fugate.
Lucille Donohue Hughes died Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004 in Sulphur Springs, after a short illness.
She was born on March 26, 1919, in Van Zant County, to Henry Edward and Minnie Lee Deen Donohue. She married Robert Thurman Davidson. He preceded her in death.
Lucille Donohue Hughes was a member of Cool Springs Primitive Baptist Church. She grew up in Canton and lived in the Dallas area most of her life. She returned to Canton in 1985.
Survivors include three sons, Sam Davidson of Irving, Bobby Davidson of Dallas and Emmet Crone of Largo, Fla.; two daughters, Sharlyn Fugate of Tyler and Virginia Worsham of Sulphur Springs; two sisters, Drucilla Stephens and Grace Brown, both of Canton; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by three brothers, J.T., Romie and Homer Donohoe; and two sisters, Edrie Terry and Fannie Wylie.
David Hare
Funeral services for David Hare, 86, of Sulphur Bluff were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, at Lake Chapel Church in Franklin County with the Revs. Gerald Hood and Roger Burks officiating.
Interment was in Fairview Cemetery in Franklin County with Gary Hare Jr., Ryan Russell, Derin Hare, Mark Hare, Durwood Hare and Christopher Turney serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Terry Jaggers and Garrison Hare.
Visitation were held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, at Harvey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon.
Mr. Hare died Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004 in Mount Pleasant.
He was born on Aug. 29, 1917, in Franklin County, to Katie Donaghe and Isom Hare Sr. He married Gladys Linington. She preceded him in death in 1987.
Survivors include one son, Gary David Hare Sr. of Galveston; two daughters, Paula Hare Posey of Birthright and Carolyn Russell of Mount Pleasant; two sisters, Doris Hilger of Midland and Irene Wilburn of California; two sisters-in-law, Martha Hare of Sulphur Bluff and Faye Linington of Sulphur Springs; three grandchildren, Gary Hare Jr. of League City, Gina Lynn Turney of Commerce and Ryan Lynn Russell of Mount Pleasant; five great-grandchildren, Devin, Garrison, Brittany, Christina and Christopher; and one great-great-grandchild, Brioni.
Mr. Hare was also preceded in death by his parents, seven brothers and four sisters.
A.D. Gowen
Funeral services for A.D. Gowen, 84, of Dike were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, at Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home Chapel with Darrell Tubb officiating.
Military graveside services followed at Conner Cemetery conducted by members of the Hopkins County Military Coalition, who will also serve as pallbearers.
Visitation were held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, at the funeral home.
Mr. Gowen died at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 9, 2004 at Hopkins County Memorial Hospital.
He was born on Dec. 11, 1919, in Alabama, to Archie D. and Mollie Gowen. He married Geraldine Smith on June 1, 1946, in Sulphur Springs. She survives.
Mr. Gowen was retired from Southland Plumbing Supply in Dallas. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Other survivors include one daughter, Linda Kester of Arlington; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Mr. Gowen was preceded in death by one grandson, David Scott McWilliams; one step-son, Gary Don Goodman; five brothers; and one sister.
Kenneth Ross
Military graveside services for Kenneth Ross, 72, of Sulphur Springs were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, at Old Tarrant Cemetery with Chris Shelby officiating under the direction of Hopkins County Military Coalition.
Visitation were held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, at Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home.
Mr. Ross died Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 10, 2004 at his residence.
He was born Sept. 8, 1931, in Sulphur Springs, to Eura and Myrtis Turner Ross. He married Marie Keller. She preceded him in death in 1993.
Mr. Ross was a retired mechanic. He was a member of League Street Church of Christ, and the National Rifle Association and Texas State Rifle Association. He served in the U.S. Army, during the Korean War.
Survivors include one son, Tim Ross of Royse City; five grandchildren, Shanna Ross, Amanda Ross, Emily Ross, Jacob Miller and Noah Ross; and one great-grandchild, Thomas Gallegos.
Mr. Ross was also preceded in death by one grandson.
Helen I. Glei Melvin
Funeral services for Helen I. Glei Melvin, 99, of Sulphur Springs were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, at Marsh Funeral Home in Waukegan, Ill., with the Rev. Wayne P. Jahn officiating.
Burial followed in Concordia Cemetery in Forest Park, Ill.
Mrs. Melvin died at 6:27 p.m. Monday, Feb. 9, 2004 at Hopkins County Memorial Hospital in Sulphur Springs.
She was born on Dec. 14, 1904, in New Frankfurt, Mo., to Robert and Bertha Elizabeth Reisacher Lenz. She married Fred W. Glei in July of 1944 in Waukegan, Ill. He preceded her in death on Sept. 26, 1962. She married Linton Melvin in 1965 in Evanston, Ill. He preceded her in death in 1979.
Mrs. Melvin was a homemaker and a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Waukegan, Ill.
Survivors include one daughter, Martha Glei Patton of Sulphur Springs; four grandchildren, Kelly Patton of Tucson, Ariz., Kevin Patton of Lone Oak, Kurtis Patton of Rockwall and Kyle Patton of Lone Oak; nine great-grandchildren, Rick, Karlyn, Kelsie, Kiensey, Brittany, Ryan, Cade, Jada and Korbin Patton.
Mrs. Melvin was also preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Joseph Robert Lenz; and two sisters, Carolyn Jones and Mary Kathryn Eickhorst.
Hugh Sprague
Hugh Sprague, 70, of Sulphur Springs died at 5:12 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004 at his residence.
He was born on Nov. 19, 1933, in Bloomington, Ill., to Hugh Brenton Sprague Sr. and Martha Virginia Hamilton Sprague.
Mr. Sprague was a retired department head of City of Sulphur Springs Parks and Recreation.
Survivors include three daughters, Debra Lynn Raden of Venice, Calif., Charyle Gale Emel of State College, Penn, and Ruth Lee Sexton of Schertz; one son, Charles Bryan Sprague of Lawton, Okla.; two brothers, Ronald Sprague of Sulphur Springs and Dale Sprague of Dike; and eight grandchildren.
Mr. Sprague was preceded in death by one daughter, Shelby Virginia Sprague.
Cremation arrangements were under the direction of Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home.
Durwood Tarrant
Funeral services for Durwood Tarrant, age 71, of Sulphur Springs, were held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 6, 2004 at Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Doug Miller officiating. A Masonic graveside service followed at Forest Academy Cemetery with Toby Boatman, Andy Harmon, Dean Clark, Bobby Clark, Robert May and Anthony Scott serving as pallbearers.
Mr. Tarrant passed away at 2:13 p.m. Tuesday, February 3, 2004 at Hospice of East Texas in Tyler. He was born on November 1, 1932 in Mt. Vernon, TX to William Wendell and Minnie Ola May Tarrant. He married Daisy Inez Anders in Mt. Pleasant, TX on May 21, 1955. She survives.
Mr. Tarrant was a welder. He was a member of the Baptist faith and the Masonic Lodge 1180 of Winnsboro. He served in the United States Air Force.
Other survivors include: son, Douglas Wayne Tarrant and wife Debbie; daughter, Rhonda Sue Tarrant; two grandsons, Jeremy Wayne Tarrant, Justin Chase Tarrant; one granddaughter, Ashley DeeRon Tarrant, all of Sulphur Springs; one brother, Bill Tarrant and his wife Dot of Paris; one sister, Tommie Jo Tarrant.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Ray Tarrant and his parents.
Ruth Baker Lovelace
Ruth Baker Lovelace, age 95, passed away at a nursing home in Arlington Texas on February 3, 2004.
A resident of Grand Prairie, Texas since 1946 Ruth Lovelace was born September 7, 1908 in Haskell County to Henry Hasten Baker and Sally Dee Causey Baker. Very soon after her birth, the family moved back to their roots in Hopkins County where her parents farmed and raised their family.
The oldest of six children and born when her mother was only 17, she became almost a second mother to her brothers and sister. She married Arnold Ray Lovelace in 1929, and they lived briefly in Lubbock Texas where their son Charles was born and then to Dallas where their daughter Marlene was born.
Then as always, they were very active in their church. Ray preceded her in death in 1966.
As her children grew older, she worked at Grand Prairie Cleaners and also at Milliorn Cleaners and Baker Brothers Cleaners in Grand Prairie, the last two being family businesses. She loved her jobs because of her interactions with her brothers and sister in their business, her associations with her co-workers, and because of her caring for her customers. She did not look forward to retirement and continued working until she was 77 years old.
She would want it said of her that she loved the Lord, her family, and her church. A faithful member of the First Baptist Church in Grand Prairie since 1946, she gained much strength and fulfillment from her ministers, family, and friends there. She loved to sing.
In addition to her parents and her husband she is preceded in death by her brother Henry Baker and her sister Edith Milliorn. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Charles and LaVerne Lovelace of Arlington, her daughter and son-in-law Marlene and Robert Carle of Granbury, her brothers and sisters-in-law B.W. and Thelma Baker of Grand Prairie, Phil and Rosie Baker of Irving, Jack and Barbara Baker of Rockwall, and her sister-in-law Erma Lee Baker of Irving. She has grandchildren Dr. Charles Ray Lovelace, Jr. of Dallas, Lynn Lovelace of Mesquite, Greg Lovelace of Mesquite, and Dr. Jamie Inman of Cleburne. She is also survived by great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and many friends. Her most faithful companion and caregiver Tim Coleman has added comfort and friendship to her last years.
Services were held at the First Baptist Church in Grand Prairie on February 5, 2004. She is buried
next to Ray at Moore Memorial Gardens in Arlington, Texas.
Kenneth Vernard Gillespie
Funeral services were Saturday, February 7, 2004 at 11:00 AM in Bold Pilgrim Baptist Church, Kaufman, Texas with Rev. James M. Smith, Pastor and Rev. Leonard Jackson, Eulogist officiating. Interment was in Council Garden in Kaufman Cemetery.
Kenneth Vernard Gillespie was born August 19, 1959 in Terrell, TX to the parentage of Frankie Parker Gillespie and Cleo Gillespie, both preceded him in death. Keith grew up in Kaufman and Sulphur Springs where his mother taught school.
He graduated from Kaufman High School in 1977, attended Trinity Valley College in Athens and Wiley College in Marshall, Texas. He later joined the U.S. Navy and served three years.
Keith leaves to cherish his memories one brother, Vendell Adrain Gillespie; three sons, Corey Scott, Kaufman, Texas, Keone Williams, Terrell, Texas and Jordan Gillespie, Gig Harbor, WA; two daughters, Michelle Gillespie, Wills Point, Texas and Jessica Gillespie, Kaufman; two grandchilddren; three aunts, Juanita Smith, Kaufman, Erma Fletcher and Robbie Morrow, Dallas, Texas; special cousins The Jackson and Morrow Families; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Lewis Paul Alford
Funeral services for Lewis Paul Alford, 92, of Pickton were held at 1 p.m. Friday, May 21, 2004 at Beaty Funeral Home Chapel in Winnsboro with the Rev. Tom Buck officiating.
Burial was in Winterfield Cemetery in Hopkins County with Mike Brumley, Danny Brumley, Ricky Brumley, Donnie Lucky, Kenneth Brumley and Jerry McFarlin serving as pallbearers.
Mr. Alford died on Tuesday, May 18, 2004 in Denton.
He was born on April 23, 1912, in Lone Oak, to Benjamin and Belle Burns Alford. He married Mary Carina. She preceded him in death in July 1992.
Mr. Alford retired from LTV in Grand Prairie in 1977. He was a member of the Pickton Domino Hall group and Woodmen of the World.
Survivors include one daughter, Sue Alford Lucky of Denton; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Alford was also preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Pat Brumley in July 1984; three sisters, Annie Ray, Jewel Thomas and Lillie Spangler; and two brothers, Jim and B.J. Alford.
