Jack Willard Johnson, 84

Jack Willard Johnson of Terrell died May 4 after a sudden illness. Funeral services will be held today at 2 p.m. at Rosemound Cemetery. Ann Henley will officiate at the service arranged by Pemberton Funeral Home. Johnson was born in Hunt County on July 21, 1915, to Arthur and Rachael Clift Johnson. He was a longtime resident of Hunt County and lived most of his life in Caddo Mills. He attended the Scatterbranch Community School. He was a military police officer in the United States Army during World War II and was stationed in Belgium, France and Normandy. He was employed with the State Highway Department. He enjoyed farming and retired in 1970. He was an avid domino and bingo player. Johnson became a Christian in January 1999. Survivors include a brother-in-law, Jim Guthrie of Groves, Texas; sister-in-law, Caroline Johnson of Dallas; several nieces and nephews and three grand nephews, Thomas Jobe of Azle and Nathan and Elliott Browning of Omaha, Neb. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Hubert and Clift Johnson and two sisters, Roxie Browning and Mary Guthrie.

Lucille Joslin, 89

Lucille Joslin of Mesquite was laid to rest yesterday after a funeral service at Tira United Methodist Church. The Rev. Don Shaw and Melvin Joslin officiated at the service arranged by Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home. Interment followed at Tira Cemetery in Tira Community. Pallbearers were her grandsons: Howard Joslin, Tom Pryor, Donnie Fouse, Steven Oliphant, David Wolfe, Greg Burnett, Neal Joslin and Josh Joslin. Joslin, who retired from Slater Food Corp. at East Texas State University's Watson Cafeteria, was born in Como, Texas, on April 15, 1911. She was the daughter of John and Callie C. Braden Lewis. On Jan. 25, 1930, she married Melvin Joslin in Hugo, Okla. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church. Survivors include her sons, Melvin Joslin of Royse City, Jerry Joslin of Gainesville and Larry Joslin of Caddo Mills; daughters, Jo Nell Pryor of Mesquite, Mary Oliphant of Lancaster and Kathy Renneker of Las Vegas, Nev.; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; brother, Odell Lewis of San Antonio; sister, Bessie Maud Parker of Birthright; and several nieces and nephews. Donations may be made to the hospice of your choice.

Christine Mae Ford Hutcherson, 51

Services will held Monday, May 1, 2000 at 1 p.m. at Jones Memorial Chapel for Christine Mae Ford Hutcherson of Commerce. Interment will be at Horton Cemetery. Pastor Jeanette Harris will officiate. Visitation will be today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home. Hutcherson passed away Friday, April 28, 2000 at St. Joseph Hospital in Paris, Texas.
Hutcherson was born April 17, 1949 in Long Beach, California to James Ray Clayton and Lena Mae Brown. She married Ronnie J. Hutcherson on April 28, 1982 in Sulphur Springs, Texas. She was a housewife, and a member of the pentecostal faith.
Survivors include her husband Ronnie Hutcherson of Commerce; daughters Marlene Laguna, Arlene Morales and Darlene Morales, all of Commerce; son Richard L. Wilson of Cumby; 18 grandchildren; one great grandaughter; father and step-mother James Ray and Dorothy Clayton of Commerce; brothers Ray Clayton Jr. of Ridgeway, Lester Clayton of Horton; sisters Irene Ford Hernandez and Linda Clayton Hines of Commerce, and Celeste Clayton of Arizona; father-in-law Bobby Joe Hutcherson of Portland, Oregon; father-in-law and mother-in-law Earnee and Billie Allice Van Wey of Sulphur Springs; brother-in-law Ralph Hutcherson of Commerce; and sister-in-law Sherry Woodall of Sulphur Springs, Texas.
Pallbearers include Richard Wilson, Elmer Hines, Curtis Putman, Brandon Clayton, Jerry Cooper, Agustin Morales, Joseph Ingle, and Steven Clayton. Honorary pallbearers include Lester Clayton and Joe Woodall. She is preceded in death by her mother Lena Mae Brown.
Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Marilyn Ruth Rowe, 63

Services were held Saturday, April 29, 2000 at 1 p.m. at Higgins Chapel, in Antioch, California for Marilyn Ruth Rowe, who died April 22 at her home in Antioch.
Rowe was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Feb. 23, 1937. She was married to Larry Rowe, Oct. 8, 1960.
A former resident of Canton, Texas, Rowe worked for the Malouf Sewing Factory and Wal-Mart as an office manger. In 1988 she and her family moved to Antioch, California to be near relatives. She was employed with the Contra Costa County as a Lead Supervisor for the Criminal Court for ten years. She enjoyed baking, collecting elephants and classic movies. She is preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include her husband Larry Rowe of Antioch, Cal.; son Shawn Rowe of Benicia, Cal.; daughter and son-in-law Stephanie and Greg Kozier of Crockett, Cal.; two granddaughters Karen Louise Rowe of Commerce, and Amy Rowe of Wisconsin; two brothers Richard Wolter of Harford, Wisconsin, and William Wolter of Neosho, Wisconsin.

Eunice Geneva McFadden, 78

Services were held Friday, April 28, 2000 for Eunice Geneva Patterson McFadden, of Klondike, who passed away Wednesday, April 26, at Birchwood Manor in Cooper, Texas. Services were at Pemberton Funeral Chapel with intermenty at Emblem Cemetery in Emblem, Texas. Rev. Robert Lam officiated.
McFadden was born July 4, 1921 in Hopkins County to Raymond W. Patterson and Lula Anderson Patterson. She was married Oct. 29, 1939 to Dalford O. McFadden in Sulphur Springs, Texas. She was a longtime resident of Klondike. She was a homemaker and enjoyed taking care of her family. She was a member of Riley Grove Methodist Church. She is preceded in death by her parents; one brother C. L. Patterson; and two sisters Bernice Payne and Mary Rowell.
Survivors include her husband Salford O. McFadden of Klondike; daughter Odeana Stewart of Commerce; son-in-law Neal Stewart of Commerce; daughter Lisa Rave of Klondike; son-in-law Randy Rave of Klondike; son Pat McFadden of Cumby; granddaughter Stephanie Keahey of Commerce; grandson Scott Stewart of Commerce; grandson Michael McFadden of Cumby; granddaughter Marisa McFadden of Cumby; granddaughter Traci Rave of Klondike; grandson Andy Rave of Klondike; brother James Patterson of Bronson, Texas; sister Wanda Smith of Greenville, Texas; great grandson Kyle Keahey; great granddaughter Kayla Keahey; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers include Gordon Spillers, Norman Messick, David Kerbow, Johnny Neabers, Elmer Joe Holmes, and Gaston Dodd.
Memorials may be make to the Alzheimer's Foundation.

Vonnie Rucker, 68

Graveside services for Vonnie Rucker will be held today at 11 a.m. at Rosemound Cemetery in Commerce. Visitation is prior to the service at Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home from 10-11 a.m. Rucker was a carpenter, the son of Logue Rucker, born in Commerce on March 28, 1932. He died April 24 in Oak Manor Nursing Home. He was a member of the First Baptist Church. Survivors include his son, Lonnie Rucker of Commerce; granddaughter, Michelle Faylee Rucker of Chatsworth, Ga.; four sisters and one brother.

Lowell Mervin "Red" Burkett, 60

Funeral services for Lowell Mervin "Red" Burkett of Cumby were held yesterday in the Divide Baptist Church in Hopkins County, with the Rev. Dave Gentry officiating. Interment followed at Greenview Cemetery. Burkett passed away April 17 in Taylor, Mich. Burkett was born on Dec. 16, 1939, in Dallas, Texas, to Malcolm and Ruby Ramp Burkett. He married Teresa Marie Jones on Feb. 20, 1969, in Dallas. Survivors include his wife, Teresa Marie Burkett; daughters, April Momon of Saltillo and Merry Kathleen Covington of Brashear; son, Andrew Mervin Burkett of Cumby; brother, Myron Timothy Burkett of Orlando, Fla.; grandchildren, T.J. Momon, Jarrett Covington and Patrick Covington. He was preceded in death by brothers, Malcolm Monroe Burkett, Jr. and Kenneth Warren Burkett. Cumby Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Elmer Coker, 92

Funeral services for Elmer Coker of Klondike, and formerly of Hopkins County, were held Thursday, April 20 in West Oaks Funeral Chapel with Rev. Harold Weir and Rev. Bill Weir officiating. Interment followed at the Tira Cemetery. Pallbearers were his grandsons. Honorary pallbearers were Horace Norris, Arnold Jones, B.J. (Knob) Chapman, Clarence Richey, L.V. Lawson and Gay Chapman. Coker was born in the Posey Community of Hopkins County, March 1, 1908, the son of William Denton (Bud) and Lizzie Campbell Coker. He was employed for 27 years with Texas Power & Light Company as a construction employee, prior to his retirement. He was a longtime resident of Hopkins County prior to moving to Klondike. He was a member of the Tira United Methodist Church. Coker married Frances Eudora Patterson. She preceded him in death in 1972. He was then married to Eneva Anderson in Hugo, Okla., on April 4, 1973. She survives. Other survivors include his son, Thomas E. (Tom) Coker of Gladewater; daughter, Dorothy Jean Bolger of Diana, Texas; two step-daughters, Shirley Ripley of Commerce and Lynda Ballard of Deport; three sisters, Velma Shaw and Nina Mae Oxford of Sulphur Springs and El Wanda Balazs of Eugene, Or.; seven grandchildren, six step-grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, 15 step-great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Carlos Lee Coker, and an infant daughter, Norma Jean Coker; also a brother, C.E. (Red) Coker and a sister, Willie Coker Knight. Arrangements were made by West Oaks Funeral Home in Sulphur Springs.

Richard Nelson Wims, 43

Services for Richard Nelson Wims of Wills Point were held Friday at Quinlan LyBrand Funeral Home. Paul Williams of the Lakeview Church officiated, with intermenty at Lakeside Memorial Park in Quinlan. Pallbearers were George Mathews, James Manry, Keith Jacobs, Andy Holder, Les Martin, Tony Nichols, John Barrow, Mike Morgan, James Smith, Kim Lehew and Charlie Tarrant. Blood brothers are Dennis Scroggins, Jack Scroggins, Bobby Bond, Steve Lattig, Charlie Thompson and Don Kincaid. Wims was born in McKinney, Texas, on May 10, 1956, to Sissy Lee and Oscar Nelson Wims. He graduated from Quinlan High School in 1974. In 1982, he graduated from East Texas State University with a bachelor's degree. He then received his master's degree in education in 1999. He has been a teacher at the Adolescent Center at Terrell State Hospital for 16 years. Survivors include a son, John Wims of Quinlan; step-daughters, Christy Crosson of Dallas and Dixie Howser of Rockwall; brother, Michael Rosson of Moreno Valley, Calif.; sisters, Bettye Waddington of Temple, Barbara Kincaid of West Tawakoni and Clara Cosby of Temple; four nephews and two nieces.

Bettie Lou Tuggle, 67

Funeral services for Bettie Lou Tuggle of Cumby will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m. in the First Baptist Church of Cumby. Rev. Rick Rumfelt will officiate at the service arranged by Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home in Sulphur Springs. Interment will follow at Cumby Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Robert Stephens, James Petty, Rickey Petty, Bill Nixon, Jack Smith and Charlie Tarrant. Visitation is tonight from 6-8 p.m. at Cumby Funeral Home. Tuggle was born in Cumby on June 1, 1932, to Raymon L. and Connie O. McFarlin Strickland. She married Archie Daniel (Dan) Tuggle in Lockett, Texas, on Oct. 21, 1949. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cumby. Survivors include her husband, Dan Tuggle of Cumby; son, Chuck Tuggle of Commerce; daughters, Debra Pickens of Cumby and Connie Williams of Mineola; brother, Charles Strickland of Wichita Falls; grandchildren, Donyale Pickens, Cheryl Hooks, Melissa Clower, Heather Williams, Charlie Tuggle, Lauren Smith, Chance Tuggle and Josh Smith; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Son Strickland, Delton Strickland, James Strickland and Hugh Strickland and one grandson, Jody Tuggle. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Beulah M. Wyrick Dixon, 89

Beulah M. Wyrick Dixon passed away on April 15 in Richardson. She had been born in Yowell, Texas, on Dec. 17, 1910. Services were held yesterday at the First Baptist Church of Pecan Gap, between Commerce and Cooper. Services were arranged by Restland Funeral Home of Dallas. Dixon is survived by her sons, Jack Humphreys of Santa Fe, N.M. and Dan Humphreys and wife, Marlene, of Dallas; grandchildren, Donna Baer, Danny Humphreys, Todd Humphreys, Kim Mislenicky and Jay Humphreys; and one great-grandson and one great-granddaughter.

John Richard Moss, Ed.D., 72

Family and friends of Dr. John Richard Moss of Campbell will gather today at 2:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Commerce to honor and remember his life of educating and helping others. Dr. Robert Tollison will officiate at the service arranged by Peters Funeral Home in Greenville. Interment will follow at Brigham Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Clay Lyons, James Hawkins, Bill Draughn, Bob Draughn, John Porter and Brent Cheatham. Moss, who died at his home on Thursday after having cheated death at least once already, was born in Earlsboro, Okla., on Nov. 6, 1928, to John Richard and Hazel Matlock Moss. Moss, who was a professor of Psychology and Special Education at East Texas State University (now Texas A&M University-Commerce), earned his bachelor's degree in education at the University of Central Oklahoma at Edmond, Okla., in 1949. He went on to Southern Methodist University in Dallas to receive his master's in education in 1954. He then served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, Combat Engineer Battalion, 45th Infantry. In 1960, Moss completed his Ed.D., doctorate in education, at the University of Tulsa in Tulsa, Okla. During the summers of 1957 and 1959, he attended the George Peabody College of Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. During more graduate work at the University of Denver, Denver, Colo., from 1961-64, Moss met and married Betty Coppedge in 1963. He then received certification as a psychologist and in special education, was licensed by the State of Colorado in 1964, the state of South Dakota in 1967 and the state of Texas in 1970. During his tenure at ETSU and afterwards, Moss was quite active with the Association of Retarded Citizens; a 30-year member of the Commerce Kiwanis, where he steadfastly put out the weekly newsletter; was a university sponsor of the Council for Exceptional Children; a national member and founder of the local "Association for Children with Learning Disabilities;" a five-year board member of "Dallas Bible College;" a member of the American Psychological Association; and a member of the Full Gospel Businessmen Fellowship. Moss was also very dedicated to the First Baptist Church of Commerce, teaching Sunday School, being an ordained minister, serving as a Deacon and Director of Missions. Survivors include his wife, Betty Moss of Campbell; his mother, Hazel Moss of Tulsa, Okla.; son, Kevin Moss of Campbell; daughter, Monette Douglas of Campbell; sister, Peggy Fielding of Tulsa, Okla.; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father. Memorials may be made to the building fund of First Baptist Church of Commerce.

William Brooks Arthur, 68

Funeral services for William Brooks Arthur of Commerce will be held today at 10 a.m. at the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany. Father Gene Baker will officiate at the services arranged by Pemberton Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Rosemound Cemetery. Arthur was born in Dallas on July 19, 1931, to Noble Aubry and Willie Brooks Arthur. On April 19, 1957, he married Joy Vernell Gradick in Sherman, Texas. Arthur had lived in Commerce since 1957, the year he received his master's degree in education from East Texas State University. He was a member of the ROTC at ETSU and was a veteran in the United States Air Force. He served as a principal for the Quinlan Independent School District from 1971 to 1984. Arthur was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite and the Shriners. He belonged to the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany in Commerce. Survivors include his wife, Joy Vernell Arthur of Commerce; son and daughter-in-law, Noble Lee Arthur and Amy Arthur of McKinney; daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia Lynn Lehew and Kim Lehew of Rockwall; grandsons, Chad and Josh Lehew, Blake and Jacob Arthur. Arthur was preceded in death by his parents. Memorials may be made to the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany.

Julian Henry Harvey, 89

Services were held yesterday at Pemberton Funeral Home for Julian Henry Harvey of Commerce after his death on April 9. David Gibson, of the Church of Christ, officiated at the service and the intermenty which followed at Rosemound Cemetery. Pallbearers were Lewis Jackson, Lynn Turner, Alvis Alderman, Ed Garrett, Mike Anderson and Randy Clark. Harvey was born in Mt. Pleasant on Feb. 27, 1911, to H.C. and Ruth Tosh Harvey. He married Maybian Harvey in Walters, Okla., on Aug. 28, 1939. Harvey had lived in Commerce for over 60 years. He owned and operated Model Cleaners for over 35 years. He attended Texas Tech University at Lubbock and East Texas State University in Commerce. A veteran of World War II, Harvey was active in the community as a member of the Church of Christ, Golden Kiwanis Club and Sand Hills Country Club for over 30 years. Survivors include his wife, Maybian Harvey of Commerce; brothers, Hulen Harvey and Larry Harvey, both of Mt. Pleasant; sister, Ruby Smith of Wharton, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Sam, Erby and Gifford Harvey; and one sister, Charlene Cunningham.

Jose Jesus Mandujano, 82

Funeral services for Jose Jesus Mandujano of Commerce were held yesterday at the St. James Catholic Church, with Father Diego Ossa and Deacon Jose Hernandez officiating. Burial followed at Rosemound Cemetery, with Sergio Mandujano, Rojelio Mandujano, Hugo Mandujano, Jose Mandujano, Robert Galvan and Edwardo Galvan serving as pallbearers. Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Monday, April 10, at the Tapp Funeral Home. Mandujano had died at 8 p.m. Saturday, April 8, at the Presbyterian Hospital in Commerce. Mandujano was born in Celaya, Guanajuato, Mexico on Dec. 31, 1918, the son of Refugio and Dominga Saaverdra Soto Mandujano. He married Consuelo Martinez on May 10, 1937, in Celaya, GTO and she survives. He was an agriculture farm laborer for many years, working throughout the Southwest. He was also a member of the St. James Catholic Church in Sulphur Springs. He is survived by his wife of 62 years; three sons, Jorge Mandujano of Celaya, GTO, Rojelio and Sergio Mandujano of Commerce; two daughters, Raquel Mandujano de Galvan of Commerce and Tolanda Mandujano de Mancera of Celaya, GTO. Two brothers, Raul Mandujano of Celaya, GTO and Jevenal Mandujano of Houston; one sister, Angelina M. Guellen of Mexico City; 28 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Refugio Mandujano on Oct. 25, 1974, and two brothers, Esteban and Francisco Mandujano.
