Phillip Mershon

Phillip L. Mershon, 69, of Greenville died Wednesday at Presbyterian Hospital of Greenville. There is a graveside service at 2 p.m. today at Cottonwood Cemetery in Alba. Rev. Bob Lam will officiate.

He was born Jan. 21, 1930 in Riverside, Calif. to Perry Mershon and Winifred Butler. He married Claudine McAbee on Oct. 25, 1974 in Lake Murray, Okla. Mr. Mershon served in the U.S. Army. He worked as a design engineer for E-Systems. He was a member of Odd Fellows Lodge.

Surviving are his wife of Greenville; sons Alton Gates of Iowa Park and Dalton Gates of Greenville; two daughters, Helen Mershon of California and JoAnn Mershon of New Orleans, La.; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Laura Mershon and two brothers, Fred Mershon and Butler "Bud" Mershon.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Coker-Mathews Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Imogene Morrison

Funeral services for Imogene Morrison, 83, of Greenville will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Highland Terrace Baptist Church with Rev. Riley Hamilton, Rev. Larry Jordan and Rev. Bob Layman officiating. Burial will be in Memoryland Memorial Park. She died Friday.

Born in Collin County on Sept. 15, 1915, she was the daughter of Perry Hayes and Sarah Springer Hayes. She married Fletcher Travis "Dub" Morrison on June 19, 1946 in Greenville. Mrs. Morrison was a retired cafeteria worker for Greenville Independent School District. She was a member of Highland Terrace Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Travis and Cherie Morrison of Greenville; a daughter and son-in-law, Priscilla and Thurman Adams of Greenville; a brother, Buck Hayes of Farmersville; a sister, Rita Faye Tackett of Irving and grandchildren Greg Morrison and Edie Adams, both of Greenville.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and three sisters.

Pallbearers will be John Randolph, Richard Hardy, Gary Griffin, Marvin Flowers, Byron Burk and Elbert Turner. Ned Grice, Taylor Green, Bob Inman, Rob Williams and Guy Shields will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to Highland Terrace Baptist Church Building Fund.

Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Coker-Mathews Funeral Home.

Kate Shipman

DURANT, Okla. - A funeral service for Kate Shipman, 92, of Durant will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Murray Funeral Home Chapel in Durant. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Johnson County, Okla. She died Friday at Medical Center of Southeastern Oklahoma in Durant.

Daughter of Robert Lee Venable and Ada Lee Blankenship Venable, she was born June 29, 1907 in Crandall. She married James David Shipman on Sept. 27, 1924 in Kenefic, Okla. She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Christ.

Mrs. Shipman is survived by sons Zearl Shipman of Amarillo, Calvin Shipman of Mead, Okla., Alvin Shipman of Durant, Okla., Carl Shipman of Oklahoma City, Okla., James Junior Shipman of Greenville, Don Shipman of Denison and Lane Shipman of Pampa; a daughter, Eveline Downs of Oklahoma City, Okla.; 21 grandchildren and numerous great- and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband on April 16, 1971; a son Blane Shipman in 1959; a granddaughter in 1969; three brothers and three sisters.

Visitation will be from 3 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

John Swanger

DALLAS - John W. Swanger of Greenville died Friday at Baylor Medical Center. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Christman Funeral Home in Lebanon, Penn. Burial will be in National Cemetery in Indiantown Gap, Penn.

He was born in Lebanon, Penn. on July 26, 1924 to George W. and Kathryn Krider Swanger. On June 8, 1946, he married Dorothy M. Snavely in Lebanon. He attended Lebanon Valley College until he joined the Army in 1943 when he entered the Aviation Cadet Program. He received his pilot wings in 1944 and joined the 39th Fighter Squadron in the Southwest Pacific in World War II.

Mr. Swanger attended and graduated from Penn State in 1951 with a bachelor of science in aeronautical engineering. He was employed by several major aircraft companies for 40 years and last worked at E-Systems until 1991. He was a member of the 39th Fighter Association and the P-49 Thunderbolt Pilot's Association.

Mr. Swanger is survived by his wife of Greenville; a son, John Swanger of Fairport, N.Y.; daughter Nancy Crook of Jackson, Tenn. and nine grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, George, Henry and Robert Swanger.

There will be a visitation from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Christman Funeral Home. Heritage Funeral Home of Dallas was in charge of local arrangements.

Virginia Alexander

GRESHAM, Ore. - Virginia K. Alexander of Gresham, Ore., formerly of Greenville, died June 11. There was a private memorial service in Gresham with burial in Pine Bluff, Ark.

Daughter of Rolla B. Kinard and Iva Holland Kinard, she was born Sept. 14, 1907 in Chickasha, Okla. She earned a bachelor of arts degree in English from Rice University in Houston in 1927. Mrs. Alexander was a homemaker. She lived in Tyler from 1941 to 1946, in Corpus Christi from 1946 to 1963, in Temple from 1963 to 1973 and in Greenville from 1973 to 1996.

Mrs. Alexander was a women's Bible teacher in Tyler and Corpus Christi and was active in Presbyterian women's work. She also taught the Nursery Sunday School in Tyler for 12 years.

Survivors include three sons, Rev. John K. Alexander of Beaumont, Rev. James R. Alexander of Troutdale, Ore. and Dr. Ralph H. Alexander of Gresham, Ore.; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Joe B. Alexander.

Memorials may be made to Alexander Scholarship Funds at either Covenant Theological Seminary, 12330 Conway Road, St. Louis, Mo. 63141-8697 or Reformed Theological Seminary, 5422 Clinton Boulevard, Jackson, Ms. 39209-3099.

Gabriel French

SULPHUR SPRINGS - Funeral services for Gabriel C. French, 90, of Greenville will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Forest Academy Cemetery Chapel with Rev. Fred Lewis officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Academy Cemetery.

Son of Herman and Mary Martin French, he was born in Durango, Mexico on Nov. 4, 1908. On Oct. 24, 1940 he married Fannie Bess Petty in Oklahoma City, Okla. Mr. French was a World War II veteran serving in the U.S. Navy as a pilot trainer.

He was in the hotel business for 50 years serving as general secretary with the Texas Hotel Association and was a past president of the Dallas Chapter of the Texas Hotel Association. He was a 50-year member of the Tannehill Masonic Lodge where he served as a 33rd degree Mason. Mr. French was also a past member of the Nacogdoches Rotary Club and a past member of the Down Town Dallas Kiwanis Club. He served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher at the First Baptist Church of Dallas from 1948 until 1970. After his retirement Mr. French was a member of the First Baptist Church of Sulphur Springs.

Surviving are his wife; a son, Larry French of Dallas; one granddaughter, Leigh Culver of Wenatchee, Wash. and two grandsons, Bryon and Burton French, both of Lockhart.

He was preceded in death by one son, Charles F. French.

Pallbearers will be Dan Petty, Don Petty, Jerry Petty, John French, Robert Snyder and Mark Snyder. Directors of the Forest Academy Cemetery Association will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Anderson Glenn Jr. of Commerce died Saturday in Greenville. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at New Jerusalem Baptist Church with Rev. Roy Price officiating. Burial will in St. Paul Cemetery.

Born Dec. 31, 1940 in Greenville, he was the son of Anderson Glenn Sr. and Leola Patillo Glenn. He married Betty Hurd in California in 1968. Mr. Glenn was a construction worker. He was a Baptist.

Surviving are his wife of Memphis, Tenn.; three sons, Anderson Glenn III of Arlington, David Glenn of Memphis, Tenn. and Aundre Glenn of Commerce; four daughters, Glenda Knowles of Duncanville, Vickie Jennings and LaShaa Cole of Dallas and Stephanie Glenn of Memphis, Tenn.; a brother, William Glenn of Greenville; two sisters, Erma Wright of Greenville and Frankie Willis of Seattle, Wash.; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a sister.

Pallbearers will be William Kyle Glenn, William Glenn Jr., Brandon Glenn, Mose Crockett, Darryl Johnson and Dwayne Knowles.

Visitation is from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Cozine & Tarver Funeral Home.

Herod Hendrix

Funeral services for Herod W. Hendrix of Center Point Community will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Center Point Christian Church with Rev. Wilbert A. Fountain officiating. Burial will be in Center Point Cemetery.

He died Monday at his home.

Son of A.J. and Launa Ward Hendrix, he was born March 18, 1930 in Center Point. On July 7, 1952 he married Wilma Jean Dukes in Richmond, Calif. Mr. Hendrix served in the U.S. Army. He was an employee of Greenville Independent School District and he was a member of Center Point Christian Church.

Mr. Hendrix is survived by his wife of Center Point Community; four sons, LaBoyd Hendrix and LaMonte Hendrix of Greenville, Staff Sgt. Todd Hendrix of Oklahoma City, Okla. and LauRece Hendrix of Norfolk, Va.; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three sons and two brothers.

Pallbearers will be Elvin McCurdy, Leon Clayton, N.J. Daniels, Eddie Lee Brown, Billy Ward and Trig Ward.

Visitation is from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Cozine & Tarver Funeral Home.

Diana Murrell

EMORY - Diana G. Murrell, 52, of Emory died Wednesday at East Texas Medical Center in Tyler. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Randolph-Lindsey Cemetery with Rev. Lionel Fernando officiating.

Daughter of Henry and Gerlene White, she was born Nov. 15, 1946 in El Paso. She married Joe Murrell in Lubbock in 1985. Mrs. Murrell was a school teacher. She was a Catholic.

She is survived by her husband of Emory; her parents; brothers Earl White of Roswell, N.M. and Mike White of Dextur, N.M. and a sister, Debbie Van Alstine of Truth or Consequences, N.M.

Wilson Orwosky Funeral Home of Emory is in charge of arrangements.

Melvie Poovey

POINT - Melvie Alice Poovey, 81, of Morgan City, La. died Monday at Lake Wood Hospital in Morgan City. Funeral services are at 10 a.m. today at Point Funeral Home with Loyd McKinney officiating. Burial will be in Lynch Cemetery.

She was born March 9, 1918 in Rains County to Baxter and Katie Herriage Palmore. Mrs. Poovey was a housewife and she was a Baptist.

Survivors include three sons, Richard "Sonny" Rabe of Dallas, Rickey Rabe of Atlantic and Jimmy Charles Rabe of Morgan City, La.; two daughters, Robbie Rabe Sockler and Zelda Rabe Housewright, both of Euless; a sister, Dorothy Timberlake of Greenville; 16 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by husbands J.C. Rabe, in 1976 and Bernarr Poovey in 1998 and 12 brothers and sisters.
