Mission
Jose Luz Rivera, 89, passed away, Monday, Jan. 26, 1998, at McAllen Medical Center. Born in Montemorelos, Nuevo León, Mexico, Mr. Rivera moved to the Valley at a very young age where he worked as a Barber for most of his life. He was preceded in death by his parents, Teresita M. and Blas Rivera; two brothers, Melecio Rivera and Fernandeo Rivera, Sr.; and three sisters, Juanita R. Garcia, Guadalupe R. Perez and Ventura R. Ramirez.

He is survived by three brothers, Donaciano Rivera of Mission, Juan M. Rivera of Pharr and Pablo Rivera, of San Antonio; and nieces and nephews.

A Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today, Jan. 28, 1998, at Flores Chapel. Funeral Mass will be recited at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, Jan.29, 1998, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Mission. Burial will follow at Catholic Cemetery.

The choir singers will be Sister Lupita Cortez of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church and his nieces and nephews. Military Services will be conducted by the Catholic War Veterans Post 1065 of Mission.

Serving as pallbearers will be his nieces and nephews.

Flores Funeral Home of Mission is in charge of arrangements.

Hermenegilga Infante
McAllen
Hermenegilda Infante, 81, entered into eternal rest on Sunday Jan. 25, 1998, at McAllen Medical Center.

Born in Allende, Mexico, Mrs. Infante was a housewife.

Mrs. Infante is survived by her five sons, David (Lydia) Infante, Ruben (Olga) Infante, both of McAllen, Marcos (Gloria) Infante, Brownfield, Texas, Isreal (Juanita) Infante of Reynosa, Mexico, Pedro Infante of McAllen and one daughter, Ester Galvan of Uvalde, Texas; 26 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Viewing and visitation for Mrs. Infante began at 5 p.m. Monday, Jan. 26, 1998, with a prayer service being held at 7 p.m. at Ceballos Funeral Home of McAllen. A religious service was held on Tuesday, Jan. 27, 1998, at Templo Calvario in McAllen with departure at 1:30 p.m. for burial at Valley Memorial Gardens.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the care of Ceballos Funeral Home of McAllen.

Juanita M. Debouver
Edinburg
Juanita M. DeBouver, 69, died Monday, Jan. 26, 1998, at University Hospital in San Antonio.

Mrs. DeBouver was born on March 28, 1928, to Jose and Apolonia Martinez, and she married Noel W. DeBouver on June 27, 1949. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Edinburg. Juanita was a warm loving woman to her family and friends and she will be dearly missed.

Survivors include her husband, Noel W. DeBouver, Edinburg; four daughters, Margarette (Jim) Ragland, Rogers, Ark, Mary E. DeBouver, San Antonio, Texas, Diana Marie (Joe) Partida, Victoria, Texas, and Josephine Garza, San Antonio, Texas. She is also survived by three brothers, three sisters, 12 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 4-9 p.m. today, Jan. 28, 1998, with the family to greet friends from 6-7 p.m., and a rosary to follow at 7 p.m. at Skinner-Silva Funeral Home in Edinburg.

Funeral Mass is scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, 1998, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with interment to follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Ernie Strickland, Jose Robledo, Bill Koen, Roberto and Rene Rodriguez and Jim Ragland.

Skinner-Silva Funeral Home in Edinburg is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Juanita T. Saenz
La Villa
Juanita T. Saenz, 76, passed away Monday, Jan. 26, 1998, at Valley Gardens Manor in Weslaco.

She was born October 21, 1921, to Malaquias and Cruz Tamez in La Blanca, Texas, and lived most of her life in La Villa.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband Guadalupe Saenz, Sr. on June 10, 1996.

She is survived by four sons, Adalberto Saenz and wife Dominga of Natalia, Texas, Alejos Saenz and wife Aurora and Guadalupe Saenz, Jr., and wife Edna, all of Weslaco, and Alfredo Saenz and wife, Olga of La Villa; four daughters, Eva Hernandez and husband Luciano of Holland, Michigan, Elvia Cisneros and Husband Joe of Floydada, Texas, Esmeralda Moheno and husband Victor of Visalia, California, and Ernestina Saenz of La Villa; two brothers, Juan Tamez of La Villa and Julian Tamez of Corpus Christi; 27 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.

Visitation was Tuesday, Jan. 27, 1998, with a rosary at Guerra Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. today, Jan. 28, 1998, at Our Lady of Guadalupe. The celebrant will be the Rev. Gregory M. Kuczmanski. Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Park in Weslaco.

Pallbearers will be Joe Cisneros, Jr., Rolando Cisneros, David Saenz, Ron Saenz, Bobby Saenz and Ramiro Saenz.
The honorary pallbearer will be Angel Saenz.

Arrangements are under the direction of Guerra Funeral Home of Elsa.

MS. JOSEFA L. LONGORIA

EDINBURG -- Ms. Josefa L. Longoria entered eternal rest at 10:50 p.m. Monday in McAllen, Texas, after a lengthy illness. Born Aug. 27, 1906, in Laguna Seca, she had lived in Edinburg for most of her life. She was 91 years old. Ms. Longoria was a member of St. Teresita Church in Faysville.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Pedro Longoria; three brothers; and one sister.

Ms. Longoria is survived by her loving family: one son, Higinio Longoria of Edinburg; one sister, Hermelinda Iglesias of Edinburg; three grandchildren, Norma (Ramiro) Villarreal, Higinio (Martha) Longoria Jr. and Marcos Longoria; and four great-grandchildren, Ramiro Villarreal III, Daniel Villarreal, Pedro Longoria and Allison Gloria Villarreal.

A holy rosary was prayed Tuesday evening at Gonzalez Funeral Home Chapel of Peace in Edinburg. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. today, July 29, 1998, at St. Teresita Church in Faysville. Burial services will follow at Laguna Seca Cemetery, under the direction of Gonzalez Funeral Home in Edinburg.

ESPERANZA SAENZ

ALAMO -- Esperanza Saenz, 74, of Alamo, passed away Monday, July 27, 1998, at McAllen Medical Center. She was preceded in death by her son, Juan Saenz, in 1976.

Survivors include her loving husband, Ejipto Saenz of Alamo; a son, Pedro Saenz of Alamo; a daughter, Consuelo (Alberto) De La Rosa of Alamo; grandchildren, Aurora Lopez and April De La Rosa of Alamo, and Antonio Saenz, Juan Saenz Jr., Alfredo Saenz, all of Alamo; 13 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

A rosary will be held at 7 p.m. today, July 29, 1998, and Thursday, July 30, 1998, at De Leon Funeral Home in Pharr. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Friday, July 31, 1998, at Resurrection Catholic Church of Alamo. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery of Alamo, under the direction of De Leon Funeral Home in Pharr.

FLORA DELL HOLLON GRAHAM

WESLACO -- Flora Dell Hollon Graham, 94, a longtime Valley resident, passed away Tuesday, July 28, 1998, in Corpus Christi after a lengthy illness.

Born Sept. 18, 1903, she was the daughter of B.C. and Ellen Texas Davenport of Harlingen.

Flora Dell grew up in Harlingen, married Clyde Hollon and lived for many years in McAllen and Mercedes. She was a longtime member of The First United Methodist Church of Mercedes; was involved in the United Methodist Women, Los Ebanos Study Club, Junior League of McAllen, The Coterie Club of Mercedes, and was a former fourth-grade teacher in Mercedes. She loved life and served as a living example for her children and grandchildren and left them with the knowledge that life is a celebration and a treasured gift of God.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Clyde Hollon and Leon Graham; two sisters, Chera Davenport Hathaway and Merle Davenport Daniel; and one brother, R.R. Davenport.

She is survived by two daughters, Jane Hollon McGilvray (Jerry) and Clydell Gilmore (AC); grandchildren, Russell McGilvray (Kathy) of McAllen, Malinda McGilvray Tupper (Ron) of McAllen, AC Gilmore Jr. of Corpus Christi, Zachary Gilmore of Dallas and Mike Gilmore (Debbie) of Corpus Christi; eight great-granddaughters, Michelle, Melissa and Madeline Tupper of McAllen, Anna and Erin McGilvray of McAllen, Amanda, Sidney and Ali Gilmore, all of Corpus Christi; numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be 3:30 p.m. today, July 29, 1998, at Restlawn Memorial Park in La Feria, with Rev. Ken Harrison of the First United Methodist Church of McAllen officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of McCaleb Funeral Home in Weslaco.

CATARINA VALENZUELA

McALLEN -- Catarina Valenzuela, 61, entered into eternal rest on Monday, July 27, 1998, at McAllen Medical Center. Born in Austin, Texas, Ms. Valenzuela was a retired clothing supervisor.

Ms. Valenzuela is survived by her three brothers, Gregorio (Maria Concepcion) Gonzalez of Los Fresnos, Sabino Gonzalez of McAllen and Matias Valenzuela of Manhattan Beach, California; three nephews, Rogelio (Maribel) Gonzalez, Robert (Sylvia) Gonzalez and Joe (Sandra) Garcia, all of Brownsville.

Viewing and visitation for Ms. Valenzuela will be today, July 29, 1998, beginning at 10 a.m., with a rosary beginning at 7 p.m. at Ceballos Funeral Home in McAllen. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 30, 1998, at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church in McAllen. Burial will follow at La Piedad Cemetery in McAllen.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the care of Ceballos Funeral Home of McAllen.

RENE ESPINOZA

PHARR -- Rene Espinoza, age 31, passed away Tuesday, July 28, at McAllen Medical Center.

He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Espinoza of Pharr; parents, Raul & Alicia Espinoza of Pharr; a son, Brando Espinoza of McAllen; a stepdaughter, Yvonne Monnette Nieto of Harlingen; a stepbrother, Alfredo Salinas of San Juan; two sisters, Rosie Perez of Pharr and Rebecca Herrera of Pharr; a stepsister, Estela Garza of Pharr; and his grandmother, Concepcion Enriquez of Pharr.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, July 29, at Skinner-Silva Funeral Home of Pharr, with a rosary to be held at 7 that same evening. Funeral services will take place at St. Margaret's Catholic Church in Pharr at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 30, 1998, with burial to follow at Palm Valley Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Pharr.

ALBERTO MENDOZA III.

WESLACO -- Mr. Alberto Mendoza III, 23, passed away Sunday, June 14, 1998, in Donna, due to an automobile accident. He was born on June 26, 1975, in Lansing, Mich., and had lived in Weslaco for about 16 years. Mr. Mendoza had been attending the University of Texas-Pan American in Edinburg, Texas, as a full-time student for several years. He also worked part-time with the Old Navy Store in McAllen.

He is survived by his parents, Alberto and Alicia Mendoza Jr. of Weslaco; his maternal grandmother, Maria Martinez of Donna; his three sisters, Yolanda Randolph and Janie Ramos, both of Weslaco, and Jacquelin Mendoza of Donna; his brother, Enrique Jose Mendoza of Lansing, Mich.; his eight uncles, Ignacio and Jesus Mendoza, both of Lansing, Mich., Roberto Mendoza of Conroe, Texas, Candelario and Leon Aleman, both of Donna, Juan Aleman of Plainview, Joe Aleman of McAllen and Alex Carmona of Donna; his seven aunts, Raquel Olvera of Weslaco, Rebeca Gomez, Rosa Roman, Linda Mendoza and Dolores Gonzalez, all of of Lansing, Mich., Guadalupe Flores of Donna and Maria Elida Newton of South Carolina.

He was preceded in death by his two grandfathers, Andres M. Aleman and Alberto Mendoza Sr. and his grandmother, Victoria Mendoza.

A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. today, June 18, 1998, at Hawkins Funeral Home in Weslaco. Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Friday, June 19, 1998, at Templo La Hermosa in Weslaco. Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Park in Weslaco. Officiating will be the Rev. Joaquin Turubiarrtes.

JOVITA REYES

SAN JUAN -- Jovita Reyes, 85, of San Juan, died Sunday, June 14, 1998, at McAllen Medical Center.

Born in Doctor Arroyo, Nuevo León, Mexico, Mrs. Reyes had lived in San Juan for most of her life. She was a homemaker and a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Parish in San Juan. She was a very devoted Catholic.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bartolo Reyes; a son, Esteban Reyes; a daughter, Maria De Jesus Reyes Tobias; grandchildren, Mario Reyes, Ruben Hernandez, Yolanda Chavez and Criselda Reyes; a brother, Severo Molina; and a sister, Maria Inez Rendon.

Survivors include two sons, Francisco (Guadalupe) Reyes of Joliet, Ill., and Olegario (Dora) Reyes of Walla Walla, Wash.; three daughters, Heriberta (Adelaido) Chavez of Matehuala, San Luis Potosí, Mexico, Maria Elena (Salvador) Farias and Petra Reyes, both of San Juan; five sisters, Margarita Berrones and Matilde Casarez, both of Roswell, New Mexico, Juanita Rendon of La Puente, Calif., Ana Maria Nava Molina of Monterrey and Beatriz Bernal of Santa Catarina, Nuevo León, Mexico; 30 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation was from 3-9 p.m. Tuesday, June 16, 1998, with a 7 p.m. rosary at Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in San Juan. Funeral Mass was 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 17, 1998, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Parish in San Juan. Interment followed at San Juan Cemetery.

Funeral services were under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan.

LEONA G. COLBURN

PHARR -- Leona G. Colburn, 84, died on Sunday, June 14, 1998, at Briarcliff Nursing Home. Mrs. Colburn was born in Roby, Texas, and had lived in the Valley for 83 years. She was a retired nurse.

She was a member of the San Juan Chapter Eastern Star and the Peoples Covenant Church in San Juan.

Survivors include her son, Edward A. Colburn of Brownsville, Texas; her daughter, Markie Bellew of Columbia, MD; two grandsons, Lee Colburn of League City, Texas, and Trent Bellew of Columbia, MD; two granddaughters, Kelly Andrews of Pearland, Texas, and Katherine Martz of Sugarland, Texas; and five great-grandchildren.

Inurnment services will be 11 a.m. Friday, June 19, 1998, at Roselawn Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, c/o Marjorie Naylor, 211 Daffodil, McAllen, Texas 78501, or to a charity of choice.

Services were entrusted to the care of Kreidler Funeral Home in McAllen.

DOROTHY KNIGHT GASTON

McALLEN -- Dorothy Knight Gaston, 97, died on Monday, June 8, 1998, at Twinbrooke South Nursing Home. She was born in Houston, Texas, and moved to McAllen in 1977.

Mrs. Gaston was preceded in death by her husband, Wellborn Wright Gaston Sr.; a son, Wellborn W. Gaston, Jr.; and a daughter, Jane Gaston Barr.

Survivors include her daughter, Mrs. Ben W. Smith of McAllen, Texas; 11 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

She was a homemaker, a member of First Presbyterian Church of McAllen and the PEO Sisterhood.

Graveside services were Thursday, June 11, 1998, at Glenwood Cemetery in Houston, Texas. The family suggests that friends make memorial contributions to a church of their choice.

Services were entrusted to the care of Kreidler Funeral Home in McAllen.

MELCHOR GARCIA

MISSION -- Melchor Garcia, 97, passed away Tuesday, June 16, 1998, at his Mission residence.

He is survived by two sons, Damacio (Margarita) Garcia of Mission and Alfredo Garcia of California; one daughter, Amelia G. (Santos) Santana of Mission; one brother, Juan Garcia of California; 19 grandchildren, 51 great-grandchildren and 28 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. today, June 18, 1998, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Valley Memorial Gardens.

Flores Funeral Home of Mission is in charge of arrangements.

JOSE RAMIREZ JR.

DONNA -- Jose Ramirez Jr. (The Rock) entered eternal rest Monday, June 15, 1998, at the Audie L. Murphy Memorial Veterans Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. Born Dec. 5, 1948, to Jose and Timotea Ramirez Sr., in Donna. He served in the Army during the Vietnam War. Mr. Ramirez was a caring, loving husband, father, brother, uncle, father-in-law, stepfather and friend who will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include his wife, Rosa R. Ramirez; three daughters, Samantha Lisa Brown of LA, Nancy Coronado of Pharr, and Joni Ramirez of Donna; four sons, Robert Ramirez of Arkansas, Jose Ramirez III of Donna, Joseph Ramirez and Jason Ramirez, both of Edinburg; two brothers, Arturo Ramirez and Jesus Ramirez, both of Donna; three sisters, Amelia Balli, Aurora Rios and Maria Martinez, all of Donna; 10 grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and other family members.

Visitation services will be Wednesday, June 17, 1998, from 1 to 9 p.m., with a 7 p.m. rosary. The funeral procession will depart the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. today, June 18, 1998, for a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian burial at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Donna. Interment will follow at Val Verde Memorial Gardens.

Services are being directed by Sagmiller Funeral Home.

OSCAR FUENTES

McALLEN -- Oscar Fuentes passed on to eternal rest on June 16, 1998. He was born on Nov. 21, 1953, in McAllen, Texas.

Mr. Fuentes graduated from McAllen High School in 1972 and attended St. Mary's University where he received a B.A. degree on May 7, 1975. He attended Georgetown University and obtained a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree in 1980. He practiced law and was a devoted member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in McAllen. Mr. Fuentes was a member of the Hidalgo County Bar Association and also served as McAllen Municipal Judge for several years. He was a devoted husband, father and son.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ricardo Fuentes Sr., in July 1977.

Mr. Fuentes is survived by his loving wife, Rosemary J. Fuentes; three sons, Juan, Luis and Miguel; his mother, Mrs. Paula G. Fuentes; four brothers, Ricardo Jr. (Jeanette), Rogelio Fuentes, Dr. Jose A. Fuentes, and Javier (Jeanne) Fuentes; three sisters, Ana Maria Fuentes, Criselda (Ricardo) Castillo and Cristina (Ernie) Garcia; and several nieces and nephews.

A rosary will be recited 7 p.m. tonight, June 18, 1998, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. There will be a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Friday, June 19, 1998, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, with burial following at Valley Memorial Gardens Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 2201 Martin St., McAllen, Texas 78504 (in name of Oscar Fuentes), or to the Boys & Girls Club of Mission, P.O. Box 2257, Mission, Texas 78572 (in name of Oscar Fuentes).

RAUL ELOY RAMOS
McALLEN - Raul Eloy Ramos, 52, entered into eternal rest Friday, June 26, 1998. Born in Roma, Mr. Ramos was employed as a cattle buyer for Trofeo Cattling.
Mr. Ramos is survived by his loving wife, Eva Irene Ramos Cardenas of McAllen; a son, Raul Enrique Ramos of McAllen; two daughters, Betzabel Gutierrez of Austin and Karla Ramos of McAllen; his mother, Bertha Ramos of Mission; a brother, Roberto Ramos of McAllen; a sister, Bertha Nilda Solis of Mission; and a grandson, Diego Andre Garcia.
Viewing and visitation for Mr. Garcia took place from 2-9 p.m. Saturday, June 27, 1998. It will resume at noon today, Sunday, June 28, 1998, with a rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. at Ceballos Funeral Home in McAllen. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, June 29, 1998, at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Valley Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

JUANA GUZMAN BORJAS
McALLEN - Juana Guzman Borjas, 93, died Friday, June 26, 1998, at McAllen Medical Center in McAllen. Miss Borjas was a McAllen resident since 1911 and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
She is survived by a niece, Santos B. Peralez of McAllen; nephews, Simon Borjas of Alexton, Ohio, and Pablo Borjas of Harlingen; and several other nieces and nephews.
Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. with a rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. today, Sunday, June 28, 1998, at Virgil Wilson Memorial Chapel, 800 N. Main St., McAllen. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, June 29, 1998, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in McAllen. Burial will follow at La Piedad Cemetery in McAllen. Pallbearers will be Mauricio Peralez, Joe Angiel Peralez, Enrique Peralez, Arturo Peralez and Noe Peralez.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Virgil Wilson Mortuary of McAllen.

JUANITA BERMEA
EDINBURG - Juanita Bermea entered into eternal rest Friday, June 26, 1998, at McAllen Heart Hospital. Born on June 24, 1925, she was 73 years old.
Mrs. Bermea is survived by her husband of 56 years, Manuel Bermea of Edinburg; her loving children, Jesus Bermea of San Antonio, Ismael Bermea of Alamo, and Josefina B. Villanueva and Alma B. Peña, both of Edinburg; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Viewing for Mrs. Bermea will take place from 10 a.m.-9 p.m. with a rosary to be recited at 7:30 p.m. today, Sunday, June 28, 1998, at Gonzalez Funeral Home Chapel of Peace. Funeral service will be held at 9 a.m. Monday, June 29, 1998, at Holy Family Catholic Church with The Rev. Esteban Hernandez officiating. Burial will follow at Valley Memorial Gardens.

RUBEN ALVARADO
MISSION - Ruben Alvarado, 64, died Friday, June 26, 1998, at Comfort House in McAllen.
Mr. Alvarado was preceded in death by his stepson, David L. Lopez. He is survived by his wife, Minerva R. Alvarado of Mission; three sons, Robert Alvarado (Shery) of Oregon, Tony Alvarado (Jeanne) of California and Raymond Alvarado (Linda) of Pennsylvania; three daughters, Rita Pieckle (Tim) of Minnesota, Rose Alvarado of California and Rachel Bassinger of South Carolina; two brothers, Ramon Alvarado of San Antonio and Ricardo Alvarado of McAllen; two sisters, Rosario Vela and Carmen Bustos, both of Mission; 12 grandchildren; seven stepchildren; and six step-grandchildren.
A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today, Sunday, June 28, 1998, at Flores Chapel. Funeral Mass will be said at 11:30 a.m. Monday, June 29, 1998, at St. John of the Fields Catholic Church in Mission. Burial will follow at Valley Memorial Gardens in McAllen.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Flores Funeral Home of Mission.

EVERETT BELL
MISSION - Everett Bell, 90, died June 26, 1998, at McAllen Medical Center.
Mr. Bell was born Nov. 19, 1907, in Winters, Texas, Runnels County, the son of Ana Ora Beard Bell and John George Bell. He moved from Corsicana to the Rio Grande Valley with his family in 1926. After working in a bakery with his sister, Rena, until the Depression hit the Valley, he worked for Judge Kibbe raising hogs and citrus. He then began growing vegetables and soon was a leading grower.
Mr. Bell moved to the Mission area in 1936 and was a pioneer in new crop management practices. He leveled all of the farm land he purchased in the Peñitas area in the mid 1940s and installed his own irrigation system, pumping from the Rio Grande in 1948. He was also the first farmer in the McCook dry land area to use narrow row planting practices. Mr. Bell was a member of the Mission Rotary Club, Santa Gertrudes Breeders International, Texas Cotton Ginners Association, Texas Grain and Feed Association and the First Methodist Church of Mission.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Rena Lassiter, Vernon Stella Bell, Euba Karine Layton, Doris Hendrix and Mildred Hartley; and a brother, Thurman Milton Bell. Mr. Bell is survived by his wife, L. Jane Bell of Mission; three sons, Jerry (Barbara) Bell of Peñitas and Duane (Sandra) Bell and Roger Bell, both of McAllen; a step-daughter, Judy Mayes; a stepson, John Jones; a sister, Lillian Gough of Uvalde; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. today, Sunday, June 28, 1998, at Virgil Wilson Mortuary in Mission. Graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, June 29, 1998, at Valley Memorial Gardens. Officiating will be the Rev. Thom Elliott of First United Methodist Church.
The family suggests tdhat, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be sent to Mission F.F.A. Alumni Scholarship Fund, 1802 Cleo Dawson, Mission, Texas 78572.
Virgil Wilson Mortuary of Mission is in charge of arrangements.

ALFRED FRANKLIN MOFFITT JR.
SAN ANTONIO - Alfred Franklin Moffitt Jr., Lt. Col. U.S. Army (Ret.), born Dec. 4, 1916, in Cleburne, died Thursday, June 25, 1998, at the age of 81.
Lt. Col. Moffitt was a graduate of Texas A&M; University, received his master's degree from the University of Pittsburg and was a graduate of many Army schools including the Command and General Staff School. He was retired from the U.S. Army after 31 years of service, having served during World War II, the Korean Conflict and Vietnam. His decorations include the Bronze Star, two Overseas Bars, General Staff Identification Badge, National Defense Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster and the Joint Service Commendation Medal. He was a member of the Retired Army Officers Association and Association of Former Students of Texas A&M.;
He was preceded in death by his first wife of 34 years, Cathryn; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred F. Moffitt Sr.; and sisters, Ellen and Louise of Cuero. Survivors include his wife of 19 years, June Goss Moffitt; son, Alfred F. Moffit III and wife Jackie of Mission; daughter, Cathy Menking and husband Robert of St. Clair Shores, Mich; grandchildren, Michelle Richards and husband Brad of McAllen, Kelli Salas and husband Art of McAllen, Michelle Moffitt of McAllen and Scott Alan Moffitt of McAllen; great-grandchildren, Michael, Christine, Dustin, Derek, Danielle and Lindsey; step-children, Susan and Lonnie Parsons, Linda and Stuart Wester, Truett Goss, David and Connie Goss, and Alan and Barbara Goss; step-grandchildren, Chris Parsons, Jeff Parsons, Lindsay Wester, Shay Wester, Phillip Goss, Kimberly and Gene Sawyer, Brian Goss, Jenna Goss and Kellie Goss.
Visitation is set for noon Thursday, July 2, 1998, with funeral service at 1:15 p.m. at Sunset Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery with full military honors. Memorials may be made to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation. The family would like to give a special thanks to Dr. Robert Shoumaker, Dr. Jim O. Bauer and Dr. Monty McMinn for your care through the years.
