RUTH L. WATSON

MISSION -- Ruth L. Watson, 77, died March 18, 1998, at McAllen Medical Center.

Born in Everson, Penn., Mrs. Watson had lived in Mission for 19 years. She was a registered nurse.

Survivos include her husband, Wilmer Watson of Mission; daughters, Margi Peterson of Ingleside, Texas, Marilyn Miller of South Padre Island, Texas, and Debra Wallhead of Elyria, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. today, Friday, March 20, 1998, at Virgil Wilson Mortuary in Mission. Memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 21, 1998, at Maranatha Baptist Church on Ware Road. The Rev. George Hall will officiate. Interment will be at Scottdale Cemetery in Scottdale, Penn.

Virgil Wilson Mortuary in Mission is in charge of arrangements.

FIDELA FUENTES

McALLEN -- Fidela Fuentes, 64, passed away on Wednesday, March 18, 1998, at Columbia Rio Grande Regional Hospital.

Mrs. Fuentes was born on August 1, 1933, in Rio Grande City and was a homemaker.

She is survived by her husband, Gumaro Fuentes; two sons, Hector Luis Garza of Laredo and Gumaro Fuentes Jr. of Edinburg; six daughters, Jamie Griego of Hereford, Texas, Maria Alma Martinez, Norma Linda Fuentes of McAllen, Leticia Pe¤a of Edinburg, Elizabeth Laughlin of Mission and Thelma Lou Ritter of New Jersey; one brother, Pedro C. Mu¤iz of McAllen; two sisters, Lydia Rangel and Felicia Castro, both of McAllen.

Viewing and visitation began on Thursday, March 19, 1998, beginning at 10 a.m. and continuing through 9 p.m. with a rosary recited at 7 p.m. at Ceballos Funeral Home of McAllen. Funeral Mass will be held today, Friday, March 20, 1998, at 11:30 a.m. at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church in McAllen. Burial will follow at La Piedad Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the care of Ceballos Funeral Home in McAllen.

CALIXTRO GONZALEZ

RIO GRANDE CITY -- Calixtro Gonzalez, 91, of Los Arrieros, Texas, died Wednesday, March 18, 1998, at his residence.

He is survived by two sons, Raul Rene Gonzalez and Reynaldo Gonzalez; one daughter, Amparo G. Lopez, all of Los Arrieros, Texas; one brother, Margarito Gonzalez of Roma, Texas; one sister, Luz Elena Gonzalez of Los Arrieros, Texas; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation was held Thursday, March 19, 1998, with a 7 p.m. rosary. Funeral Mass will be held at 4 p.m. today, March 20, 1998, at the Saline¤o Catholic Church in Saline¤o. Burial will follow at Saline¤o Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Sanchez Funeral Home in Rio Grande City.

GENOVEVA HINOJOSA

EDINBURG -- Genoveva Hinojosa, age 81, died Thursday, March 19, 1998, in Edinburg. She was a resident of Edinburg.

Survivors include her sons, Roy Lee Hinojosa Jr. of Manderville, La., Roberto David Hinojosa of Edinburg and Ricardo Manuel Hinojosa of McAllen; a brother, Alfredo M. Vela of Houston; and nine grandchildren.

A rosary will be held at 7:30 at Ceballos-Diaz Funeral Home Chapel today, Friday, March 20, 1998. Funeral services will be held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Edinburg at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 21, 1998. Interment will follow at Valley Memorial Gardens in McAllen. Arrangements are under the direction of Ceballos-Diaz Funeral Home in Edinburg.

FRANCES BASSETT HILL

SAN ANTONIO -- Frances Bassett Hill, age 65, of San Antonio, died Tuesday, March 17, 1998. She is survived by her parents, Harold H. and Anita H. Bassett; sons, Michael and Russell Hill; daughter, Heidi Hill; and grandsons, Andrew and Ryan Hill; and the love of many friends. Burial arrangements will be private. Arrangements with Porter Loring Funeral Home in San Antonio.

ALFREDO CANALES

MISSION -- Alfredo Canales, 82, passed away Wednesday, March 18, 1998, at Mission Hospital. He was preceded in death by his father, Rafael Canales; his mother, Eulogia F. Canales and a brother; Manuel Canales Sr.

He is survived by two sisters, Rafaela C. Vela and Juanita G. Villarreal both of Mission; nieces and nephews.

Funeral Mass will be said at 3 p.m. today, Friday, March 20, 1998, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Burial will follow at San Jose Cemetery. Flores Funeral Home of Mission is in charge of arrangements.

ELIDA LUNA

EDINBURG -- Elida Luna, age 68, died Thursday, March 19, 1998, in Beeville, Texas. She was a resident of Edinburg.

Survivors include her husband, Leonel Luna of Edinburg; sisters, Victoria De La Cruz of Edinburg, Leonor (Daniel) Casta¤eda of Edinburg; uncle, Jose De La Cruz of Mission; numerous nieces and nephews.

A rosary will be held today, Friday, March 20, 1998, at 7 p.m. at Ceballos-Diaz Funeral Home in Edinburg. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 21, 1998, at 2:30 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Edinburg. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Edinburg.

Pallbearers will be Rene Luna, Raul Luna, Freddy Prado, Gustavo De La Cruz, Ricardo De La Cruz and Angel Del Angel. Honorary pallbearers will be Eddie Molina and Eradio Molina Jr.

Arrangements are under the direction of Ceballos-Diaz Funeral Home in Edinburg.

EARL J. RUNGE

ALAMO -- Earl J. Runge, 77, of Alamo, died Wednesday, March 18, 1998, at McAllen Medical Center.

Born in Kimball, S.D., Mr. Runge had lived in Alamo since 1969. He was formerly of Wayland, Mo., and a member of Resurrection Catholic Church in Alamo and the Holy Name Society.

Mr. Runge was married on January 5, 1949, in Keokuk, Iowa.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Runge of Alamo; seven sons, James Runge of Alta Vista, Kan., David Runge and Charles Runge, both of Alamo, Lewis Runge of Corpus Christi, Texas, Andy Runge of Mission, Sgt. Michael Runge of Fort Bragg, N.C., and Wilbur Runge of McAllen; eight daughters, Shirley Wendel of Overland Park, Kan., Mary Parker of Baytown, Texas, Sandra Runge of Pensacola, Fla., Judy Faris and Laura Ferguson, both of Corpus Christi, Texas, Holly Cameron of Alamo, Nancy Arnold of McAllen and Margaret Burkhart of Pharr; two sisters, Mary Ann Mesecher of Hamilton, Ill. and Helen Maerz of Keokuk, Iowa; six brothers, Ted Runge and Sylvester Runge, both of Keokuk, Iowa, Alfred Runge of Phoenix, Ariz., Robert Runge of Jefferson City, Mo., Danny Runge of Warsaw, Ill., and Jack Runge of Springfield, Ill.; 25 grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

Funeral Mass will be held at 2 p.m. today, Friday, March 20, 1998, at Resurrection Catholic Church in Alamo. Interment will be in Keokuk National Cemetery in Keokuk, Iowa.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Building Fund of Resurrection Catholic Church in Alamo.

Funeral services are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan.

ROBERT D. ORTIZ

DEL RIO -- Robert D. Ortiz, 44, entered into eternal rest Monday, March 16, 1998, in Del Rio, Texas.

Mr. Ortiz was born on Aug. 11, 1953, in Kennedy, Texas. Mr. Ortiz was a Border Patrol Agent//INS.

Mr. Ortiz is survived by his wife, Lydia S. Ortiz of Del Rio; one stepson, Rafael Soto of McAllen; three daughters, Melissa Ortiz, Priscilla Ortiz, both of McAllen and Michelle Consuelo Ortiz of Del Rio; two brothers, David L. (Janie) Ortiz of McAllen, Dionel R. (Amelia) Ortiz Jr. of Rancho Viejo, Texas; three sisters, Marie Ruth Ortiz (Rosalio Sr.) Salinas of Kennedy, Texas, Yolanda Ortiz (Wendell) Belvin of Missouri City, Texas, and Alice V. (John) Curren of Huntington Beach, Calif.

Visitation began Thursday, March 19, 1998, at 3 p.m. with a rosary recited at 6 p.m. at Ceballos Funeral Home in McAllen. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 3 p.m. today, Friday, March 20, 1998, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in McAllen with Father Francisco Acosta officiating. Burial will follow at Valley Memorial Gardens Cemetery in McAllen.

MARIA CRUZ YBARRA

EDINBURG -- Maria Cruz Ybarra, 87, died Saturday, March 21, 1998, in McAllen.

Mrs. Ybarra was born May 3, 1910, in Acatita, Coahuila, Mexico, to Nazario and Nicanora Cedillo. She started as a store manager in Saltillo, Mexico. She married Augustin B. Ybarra Sr. in 1944 and then came to the United States and became a U.S. citizen.

She worked at a processing plant in Quincy, Wash., until her retirement in 1976. After moving back to Edinburg, she became actively involved with Valley Interfaith, the Guadalupanas and visiting Retama Manor until her last days. She was also very active in prayer groups and politics. A very caring and compassionate person, Mrs. Ybarra counseled many people and was an honorary member of the Oblate Missionaries of San Antonio.

Survivors include her children, Jose A. (Hilda) Ybarra, Ruben C. (Lillian) Ybarra and Gloria Y. Diaz, all of Edinburg; Pedro (Ester) Ybarra, Juan (Alta) Ybarra, Amalia Y. (Jack) Rios and Felipe (Carmen) Ybarra all of Washington; Frank (Delia) Ybarra and Atanacio (Dora) Ybarra of Texas; and a sister, Micaela Cardona of Mexico; 27 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Ybarra was preceded in death by her husband, Augustin B. Ybarra Sr.; and sons, Augustin Ybarra Jr. and Jose B. Ybarra.

Visitation will take place from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. with a 7 p.m. rosary service today, Monday, March 23, 1998, at Ceballos-Diaz Funeral Home in Edinburg. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 24, 1998, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Edinburg, and burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Edinburg.

FLORA RODRIGUEZ GARZA

PHARR -- Flora Rodriguez Garza, 71, died Saturday, March 21, 1998, at McAllen Medical Center.

She is survived by two daughters, Catalina Narro of Pharr and Juana Rodriguez of Mexico; a son, Jose Juan Faz of Pharr; five brothers, Julian Rodriguez, Antonio Rodriguez and Alejandro Rodriguez, all of Mexico, Abelardo Rodriguez of Pharr and Jose Angel Rodriguez of Hidalgo; three sisters, Minerva Gonzalez of Harlingen and Maria Felicidad and Maria Alejandrina, both of Mexico; 10 grandchildren and one great granddaughter

Funeral Mass will be said at 11 a.m. today, Monday, March 23, 1998, at St. Jude's Catholic Church in Pharr. Burial will follow at Valley Memorial Gardens in McAllen.

RAUL RIVERA

MISSION -- Raul Rivera, 32, died Saturday, March 21, 1998.

Mr. Rivera was born in Caldwell, Idaho, and had lived most of his life in Mission. He was a welder.

Survivors include his wife, Isidra Rivera of Mission; three daughters, Krystal G. Rivera, Kristina Rivera and Tiffany Lynn Rivera, all of Mission; his father, Pablo Rivera of Mission; four brothers, David Rivera, Rismeldo Rivera, Ruben Rivera and Roel Rivera, all of Mission; three sisters, Rosa Castro and Anastacia Sosa of Farwell, Texas, and Dora Arce of Edinburg.

Visitation will take place from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a 7 p.m. service today, Monday, March 23, 1998, at Virgil Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Mission. Funeral Mass is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 24, 1998, at San Martin de Porres Catholic Church in Alton with the Rev. Father Anselmi Malonda as celebrant. Burial will follow at Valley Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

REGINALDO M. CANTU

LA GRULLA -- Reginaldo M. Cantu, 54, of La Grulla died Sunday, March 22, 1998, at Starr County Memorial Hospital in Rio Grande City.

He is survived by his wife, Elida Z. Cantu of La Grulla; three sons, Demetrio (Enriqueta) Cantu, Eduardo (Violeta) Cantu and Reginaldo (Juany) Cantu Jr., all of La Grulla; four daughters, Maria Elena (Eduardo) C. Arredondo, Evangelina (Oscar) C. Gonzalez, Elda Cantu and San Juanita Cantu, all of La Grulla; a brother, Cesario (Evelina) Zambrano of Brownsville; seven grandchildren, Barbara Arredondo, Joelda Arredondo, Eduardo Arredondo Jr., Michael Gonzalez, Jaime Gonzalez, Carina Cantu and Aaron Cantu.

Visitation will take place from 1 p.m.-10 p.m. with a 7 p.m. rosary service today, Monday, March 23, 1998, at Sanchez Funeral Home of Rio Grande City. Funeral Mass will be said at 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 24, 1998, at Holy Family Catholic Church in La Grulla. Burial will follow at the Solis Cemetery in La Grulla, Texas.

AMALIA BECERRA GRANADO

EDINBURG -- Amalia Becerra Granado, 75, entered eternal rest Wednesday evening March 4, 1998, at Columbia Rio Grande Regional Hospital in McAllen.

Born on July 10, 1922, in Mexico, she had lived in her community of Lull for many years.

Survivors include her husband, Reynaldo Granado of Edinburg; two sons, Gabriel Pereda of Chicago, Ill., and Miguel Granado of Edinburg; six daughters, Juliette Pereda, Elva Q. Pereda and Elvia Granado, all of Edinburg, Adriana Pereda of Dallas, Texas, Mayra Pereda of Chicago, Ill. and Sandra Pereda of Reynosa, Mexico; two sisters, Juanita Laurel of McAllen and Maria Gonzalez of Minnesota; 22 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a 7 p.m. wake set today, March 8, 1998, at Gonzalez Funeral Home Chapel of Peace in Edinburg. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, March 9, 1998, at Nuevo Nacimiento Church in Edinburg, on W. Rogers Road in Edinburg. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery in Edinburg.

Funeral services are being directed by Gonzalez Funeral Home of Edinburg.

ALBERTO GUTIERREZ

RIO GRANDE CITY -- Mr. Alberto Gutierrez, 90, passed away on Friday March 6, 1998, at his home, after a lengthy illness.

He was born the first of six children in Rio Grande City on September 19, 1907, to the late Alberto and Celedonia Garza Gutierrez.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Reynaldo Gutierrez and Gumaro Gutierrez; a sister, Felicia Gutierrez Bassinger and his parents.

Mr. Gutierrez, a businessman and rancher, lived in Rio Grande City all of his life and served as Past President for the Rio Grande City Chamber of Commerce, Past Director of the First National Bank of Rio Grande City, member of the Masonic Lodge No. 471 for 67 years, and was one of the original founding members to establish the Club de Leones de Ciudad Miguel Aleman, Tamaulipas, Mexico, in 1946 and continued his membership until his death.

He was also awarded the first Exxon distributorship in Starr County in 1930 and retired in 1982. One of his business ventures included the co-founding and co-ownership with Mr. Ruben R. Guerra of G&G Lumber and Hardware Company with locations in Rio Grande City and Roma, Texas.

He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Guadalupe Gutierrez; four sons, Dr. Alberto Gutierrez and his wife Clare of Rio Grande City, Homero Gutierrez of Los Fresnos, Texas, Roberto Gutierrez and his wife Adriana of Rio Grande City, Ricardo Gutierrez of Rio Grande City; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two sisters, Elma Gutierrez of Rio Grande City and Delta G. Smith of McAllen.

Pallbearers will be Dr. Ricardo Gutierrez, Jr., Christian (Tan) Gutierrez, Carlos Gutierrez, Omar Gutierrez, Homero Gutierrez Jr. and Alfonso Perez. Honorary pallbearers will be Ruben R. Cardenas, Dario Guerra, Lino Perez, J.L. Villarreal, Jose Luis Coindreau and Jose Maiz Garcia.

Donations may be made in honor of Mr. Alberto Gutierrez to the Immaculate Conception School, 305 N. Britton, Rio Grande City, Texas, 78582.

Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. with a 7 p.m. rosary being recited by Deacon R.C. Salinas today, Sunday, March 8, 1998, at Sanchez Funeral Home, 302 E. 2nd in Rio Grande City. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, March 9, 1998, at Immaculate Conception Church in Rio Grande City. Graveside services will follow at the Rio Grande City Cemetery.

Sanchez Funeral Home of Rio Grande City is in charge of funeral arrangements.

PORFIRIA SALDIVAR AGUILERA

EDINBURG -- Porfiria Saldivar Aguilera, 83, entered eternal rest on Saturday, March 7, 1998, at Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco.

Born September, 15, 1914, in La Feria, she had lived in Edinburg for most of her life. She was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church in Edinburg.

Survivors include her loving husband, Roberto Aguilera of Edinburg; her children, David (Teresa) Aguilera, Paula (Roberto) Villarreal, Carmen Aguilera and Irene Salinas, all of Edinburg, Adelaida (Bernardo) Flores of Aurora, Ill., Roberta (Alfredo) Gonzalez of Dallas, Texas and Virginia (Adan) Aguirre of Grand Prairie, Texas; 21 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a 7:30 p.m. Holy Rosary today, March 8, 1998, at Gonzalez Funeral Home Chapel in Edinburg. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Monday, March 9, 1998, at Holy Family Church in Edinburg. Burial will follow at Palm Valley Memorial Gardens in Pharr.

Funeral services are beings directed by Gonzalez Funeral Home of Edinburg.

FRED LeROY HANSLER JR.

YORKTOWN -- Fred LeRoy Hansler Jr., 71, died Friday, March 6, 1998.

Mr. Hansler was originally from Runge, Texas, and formerly of the Midland-Odessa area. He was born on April 25, 1926, in Donna.

He owned Snelling and Snelling Employment Agency in Midland-Odessa, Texas, and retired in 1989. He was a member of Rabke Methodist Church of Yorktown.

He graduated from Trinity University, class of 1951, and was a member of the Odessa and Midland Kiwanis Clubs. He owned a horse that participated in the Pentathalon in the Atlanta Olympics, and served in the U.S. Navy.

He was preceded in death by his father, Fred L. Hansler, Sr.; his mother, Ruth Vohs Hansler; brothers, Mearl Hansler, Lee Hansler, Bob Hansler; a sister, Myrtle Snavely.

Survivors include his wife, Myrna Hansler of Runge, Texas, whom he married on July 3, 1951, in San Antonio, Texas; a daughter, Dana Texter of Eugene, Ore.; his sons, Bob Lee Hansler of Odessa, Texas and Fred L. Hansler III of Midland, Texas; two brothers, Joe Hansler and Harry Hansler of Corpus Christi, Texas; and six grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. today, Sunday, March 8, 1998, at Rabke Methodist Church in Yorktown with the Rev. Tad Tadlock officiating. Burial will follow at Rabke Cemetery. Memorials can be set to Rabke Methodist Church.

Funeral services were entrusted to the care of Lamprecht-Janssen Funeral Home of Yorktown.

JOSE F. LUNA

EDINBURG -- Jose F. Luna, 53, entered eternal rest on Saturday, March 7, 1998, in McAllen.

Born in Edinburg on May 19, 1944, he was a life long resident.

Mr. Luna was preceded in death by his father, Anastacio Luna in 1952.

Survivors include his loving wife, Sofia Garcia Luna; his children, Jose Omar Luna, Sonia, Ana Lisa, Nelda Luna and Jacqueline Flores, all of Edinburg; his mother, Esperanza Paez; his brothers, Gilberto Luna, Rogelio Paez, Ramiro Paez, Roberto Paez, Ruben Paez and Raul Paez; a sister, Sara Ybarra, all of Edinburg; three grandchildren, Jacob Luna, Naudya Luna and Noe Rios, Jr.

The family will be receiving friends from noon to 9 p.m. with 7 p.m. rosary by Deacon Silvestre Garcia today, March 9, 1998, at Gonzalez Funeral Home Chapel of Peace in Edinburg. Funeral services will begin with a 9:45 a.m. funeral procession from the funeral home for a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Edinburg. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery.

Funeral services are being directed by Gonzalez Funeral Home, 812 E. Cano St. in Edinburg.

JOSE R. ANAYA

EDINBURG -- Jose R. Anaya, 57, passed away on Saturday, March 7, 1998.

He was retired from the city of Edinburg, and enjoyed fishing. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, a very good father, husband, grandfather and brother.

We love you very much and will miss you. May God Bless You.

He is survived by his wife, Natividad P. Anaya; his sons, Jose S. Anaya, Jr., Martin Anaya, Rogelio Anaya, Alberto Adan Anaya and Eric Lee Anaya; his daughters, Teresa Anaya and Alejandra Anaya, both of Edinburg; his sisters, Maria E. Jaramillo of Victoria, Texas, Ladislada Cavazos of Del Cal, Ill., Yolanda Casares of Saginaw, Mich., Maria Lasarita Gallegos of Dade City, Fla.; and 12 grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a 7 p.m. rosary today, March 9, 1998, at Ceballos-Diaz Funeral Home in Edinburg. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 10, 1998, at Holy Family Catholic Church.

VICENTE GARCERA JR.

McALLEN -- Vicente Garcera Jr., 73, died on Saturday, March 7, 1998, at McAllen Nursing Center.

He was born on Oct. 6, 1924 in Valencia, Spain.

Survivors include his spouse, Eva Yolanda Cruz Garcera of McAllen; one son, Charles Vincent Garcera of San Bernardino, Calif.; one daughter, Yolanda D. Stahlke of McAllen; two sisters, Carmen Garcera and Luisa Garcera, both of Valencia, Spain; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Vicente Garcera and Aqueda San Joaqu¡n.

Graveside service will be at noon Wednesday, March 11, 1998, at Valley Memorial Gardens in McAllen. There will be no other local services for Mr. Garcera. His body will be cremated at Valley Memorial Gardens Cemetery in McAllen, under the direction of Ceballos Funeral Home in McAllen.
