Funeral services for Betty Gwen Thompson, 76, of Livingston, Texas, will be held Sunday, May 10, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. in the Indian Village Assembly of God Church in Livingston, Texas with Rev. Visitation will be held Saturday, May 9, 2015 beginning at 5:00 p.m. in the Indian Village Assembly of God Church in Livingston, Texas.

The Alabama-Coushatta Indian Nation of Texas has suffered the loss of one of it’s most devoted citizens with the passing of Betty Gwen Battise Thompson. The revered tribal elder died at the Lufkin Memorial Hospital on May 7, 2015, after a brief illness, surrounded by her family. Betty was 76 years of age, having been born at the Reservation on February 7, 1939, to parents, Eleanor and Woodrow Battise. In accordance with Tribal Matrilineal custom, Betty was a proud member of the Beaver Clan of the Tribe. She spoke Alabama-Coushatta Tribal language as her native language, and Tribal citizens feel that a huge part of the Tribe, and the Tribal language, has been diminished.

Mrs. Thompson graduated from Milby High School in Houston, and remained a fan of the Buffaloes throughout her life. She also attended the American Indian Art Institute of Phoenix. She was a born member of the Age of Aquarius, long before it became known as such later in her life. Everyone on the Reservation knew her, and she had many friends who will miss her.

She was a Tribal employee for some five decades, with the majority of her many years of service in the Accounting Department. As a Senior Accountant, she was the Assistant Director of the Finance Department. Her role grew along with the advancement of the Tribe, as she devoted her entire adult working life to the service of the Tribe.

She is survived by Ben C. Thompson, her husband of 56 years, and by her daughters, Cheri Polite (Joe Thomas, Jr.), Jane “Missy” Thompson-Janis, all of the Reservation, and Amy Battise of Washington, New Jersey; and son, Jason Thompson (Esmeralda) of Tyler, Texas. She is also survived by her brother, A. Stanley Battise (Jo Ann), sister, Grace Poncho (Sidney) of the Reservation; and sister, Linda L. Small (Wayne) of the Woodlands, Texas. Also, grandchildren, David Battise, Daniel Battise, Candice Polite-Robinson, Kianna Thompson, Ryan Thompson, Ryanna Thompson, Rylan Thompson, Jaycee Thompson, Benjamin Hurst, Shelbie Hurst, Pamela Hurst, Carson Janis, and America Janis, as well as numerous great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Thompson was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Scott Thompson; brother, Brooks Battise; and sister, Noralee Langley.

Pallbearers: Russell Battise, Bryan Small, David Battise, Daniel Battise, Carson Janis, Rylan Thompson, Colin Poncho, Melanie Battise.

Honorary Pallbearers: Dalton Poncho, Judy Williams, Shaa Poncho, Leah Harjo, Marlene Landley, Regina Buffalohead, Ryanna Thompson, Candice Polite-Robinson, Kianna Thompson.

Tee graduated from Bolton High School in Alexandria, Louisiana and went on to graduate with her degree in teaching from Louisiana College in Pineville, LA. She obtained her Master’s of Science from Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana.

Prior to her arrival in Livingston, she taught for 18 years in Louisiana before going to work for the State Department of Education in Baton Rouge. She began her career in Livingston at Livingston Junior High and moved to the High School the following year teaching physical science, biology, marine science, and human anatomy. She also served as the Department Chair for the Science Department.

In 2000, she retired from full time teaching, but after 3-4 months she decided retirement just wasn’t for her. She returned to teaching at the GED/Adult Learning Center. The following year, she began working with the newly created Challenger Program and remained there until her health declined in late 2011. The Challenger program allows individuals to meet their requirements for graduation while also meeting other responsibilities such as full-time jobs or parenthood.

Her interests included spending time with her family, reading, and needlepoint. She made 23 Christmas stockings for her entire family which will be cherished for many years. She took great pride in her teaching and her students. One of her greatest pleasures was the time she spent with former students, close friends, and colleagues, whose lives she touched. Other than her family, she considered her greatest achievements to be that of encouraging students to reach their potential, believe in themselves and work hard to achieve their goals.

She received the Polk County Chamber of Commerce Educator awards in 2001 and 2011.

We would also like to take the time to thank all those involved in her care over the last years: Evette Damian, Alondra Delgado, Amber Davis, Dr Jerry Wood and staff, Dr Raymond Luna, Dr Mani, Dr Liberos, Dr Youssef, Dr Robert Hust, Gentiva Hospice, and the entire staff at CHI St Luke’s Memorial Livingston Hospital. Special love to her closest friends Karen Brown Janecke, Ruth Bass Hollenbeck, Sue Allen Murphy, Sue Froehner Nason, and Janet Morris.

Honorary Pallbearer: Jeff Gardner

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be designated in her name to the Green and White Scholarship Program at Livingston School District. Please contact Lea Davis at 936-328-2306.
