Steven Clifton Taber, 49
October 24, 1999
Funeral services were held Thursday for Steven Clifton Taber of Brownsboro, formerly of Greenville, at Jones Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Richard Deteau officiated at the service arranged by Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Randy Ripley, Jason Thomas, Jake Thomas, Stuart Thomas, Mike Eldridge and Ricky Belcher. Honorary pallbearers were Lyndell Childers and Billy Eldridge. Taber was born in Dallas on June 1, 1950 to James and JoAnn Mays Galloway Taber. He worked as a professional counselor with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. Taber was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Teresa Campos Taber of Brownsboro; children, Jamilyn Taber Hunt and husband Brady of Cumby and Brazos Taber and his wife Miranda of Roxton; stepchildren, Ryan Joshua Campos and Teresa Rene Campos of Brownsboro; grandchildren, Bryor and Ty Taber and Julie and Jami Womack; sister, Lori Sparks of Kennewick, Wash., and brother, Jimmy Taber.

Bunn Turner, 88
October 20, 1999
Funeral services were held yesterday for Bunn Turner of Commerce. Turner had been ill and died in Sulphur Springs on Oct. 17. R.W. Owens & Son Funeral Home was in charge of the service held in the Owens Funeral Chapel with Dr. C.E. Colton, Dr. Bobby Tollison and Mr. Bill Hill officiating. Burial was at Carmel Cemetery in Wolfe City. Pallbearers were Orville Pate, Doug Miller, Roy Dell Barker, Otis Horton, C.W. Durrett and W.D. Richardson. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Ambassador Sunday School Class. Turner was born in Aberfoyle, Hunt County, on Dec. 9, 1910, to John and Beulah Jane Spradling Turner. He married Iona Mae Taylor on Oct. 14, 1933 in Commerce. Turner was a retired sheet metal fabricator and a member of the First Baptist Church of Commerce. Survivors include his wife, Iona Mae Turner of Commerce; 13 nieces; and two nephews, Roy Bogan of Houston and Hal Turner of Austin.

Rubye McDonald, 71

Rubye M. McDonald, of Commerce died Saturday at Smith Nursing Home in Wolfe City. There was a graveside service yesterday at Shiloh Cemetery in Klondike with Rev. Danny Davis officiating. She was born June 25, 1928 in Como, Hopkins County, to C. Wesley Weatherbee and Pearley Grimmett Weatherbee. She married Leon McDonald on Dec. 12,1969 in Dallas. Mrs. McDonald was the manager of an apartment complex in Commerce. She was a Congregational Methodist. Surviving are nieces Rhynda "Kay" Peterson and husband Dan of Kansas City, Mo., Mary Stribling and husband Tom of Austin and Sandy Strole and husband Owen of Toledo, Ohio; nephews Ron Brewer of Sacramento, Calif., Bryan Brewer of Southern California, Jimmy Weatherbee of Toledo, Ohio, Wayne Weatherbee and wife Phyllis of Toledo, Ohio and Michael Weatherbee and wife Linda of Bowling Green, Ohio; several grandnieces and nephews and special friend, Sam Henin of Commerce. Her husband preceded her in death on Sept. 5, 1990. Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Forrest Williams (Bill) Sheely, 62
October 13, 1999
Funeral services for Forrest Williams Sheely, of Commerce, are tomorrow at 4 p.m. at Pemberton Funeral Chapel. Dr. Bobby Tollison will officiate, with burial in Rosemound Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Daniel McCarty, Joey Adams, Forrest Jones, Scoot Chaney, W.D. Graham and Troy Jones. Sheely was born in Dallas, Sept. 17, 1937, to Forrest L. and Mary Medina Williams Sheely. He was a lifetime resident of Commerce and attended Commerce Public Schools. Sheely graduated from Commerce High School in 1956. He attended Paris Junior College and East Texas State University. He was a member of the ETSU Marching Band. Sheely was a former employee of Hennington Publishing Company in Wolfe City and American Wood in Commerce. He was previous owner of a go-cart track in Greenville, a slot-car racing track in Greenville and a record shop in Commerce. He assisted his parents in the Sheely-Goff Funeral Home in Commerce. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include a sister and brother-in-law, Sarah and Buddy Jones of Commerce; nephew, Forrest Jones of Pearless, Texas; niece, Sheely Jones Taylor of Destin, Fla.; great-niece, Lexi Taylor; great-nephew, Sean Taylor; one aunt and several cousins. Visitation is tonight from 6-7 p.m. at Pemberton Funeral Home.

Billy Ray (Biz) Woodard, 72
October 13, 1999
Funeral services for Billy Ray Woodard, of Cumby, will be held tomorrow at 10 a.m. in the Murray-Orwosky Funeral Chapel in Sulphur Springs, with Rev. Al Davis and Rev. Bobby Keller officiating. Interment will follow in the Brashear Cemetery with James Mitchell, Jack Smith, Gene George, Olin Gillian, Bill McGinness and Grandy Latimeer serving as pallbearers. E-System Security Guards will serve as honorary pallbearers. Visitation is tonight from 6-9 p.m. at Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home. Woodard died Monday evening, Oct. 11, at the Sulphur Springs Nursing Home after a long illness. He was born on Oct. 8, 1926, in Hopkins County to Willie and Zelma Mann Woodard. He married Joyce Hatley in February of 1968 in Sulphur Springs. She survives. Woodard was a veteran of World War II and had worked as a security guard for E-Systems for over 32 years before his retirement. Survivors also include two daughters, Sandra Winchester of Brashear and Linda Garrettson of Cumby; one brother, L.D. Woodard of Sulphur Springs; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Maude Graves, 92

Maude Graves, of Wolfe City died Monday at Presbyterian Hospital of Commerce following a short illness. Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Wednesday at R.W. Owens & Son Funeral Home Chapel with Wyndell Presley officiating. Burial is in Van Sickle Cemetery in the Van Sickle Community. The daughter of James Boyce and Ella Wallace Boyce, she was born Sept. 21, 1907 in the Van Sickle Community, Hunt County. On April 12, 1925 she married Drannon Graves. Graves retired from Henington Publishing Company. She was a member of West Main Church of Christ in Wolfe City. Surviving are five daughters and sons-in-law, Maudine and Kenneth Doyle of Fort Worth, Carlyn and Bob Bain of Lewisville, Joann and Don Sprinkle of Greenville, Betty and Doland Tingle of Mesquite and Mary and Milford Mach of Fort Worth; two sisters, Nancy Williams and Cora Cannon, both of Dallas; 16 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; son, Chalin Graves; daughter, Monette Graves; four brothers; four sisters; four grandchildren and one great-grandson. Grandsons are pallbearers. Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Claude C. Smart, 79

Funeral Services for Claude C. Smart, of Cumby, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 1, in the Murray-Orwosky Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Tommy Hall officiating. Interment will follow in Restlawn Memorial Park with Pallbearers being Jackie Moore, Chester Lewis Moore, Thomas Raymond Smart, Donald Smart, Marvin Smart Jr. and Randy Joe Hein. Smart passed away at 4:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 27, in the V.A. Hospital in Dallas. He was born on July 24, 1920, in Mason, Texas, to Harvey and Lena Griffith Smart. He was returned from Millwright and served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He married Bessie Lorrayne Baugh; she preceded him in death in 1964. He married Ruth Smith; she preceded him in death in 1989. Survivors include: daughter, Gladys Waunelle Laird of Greencoat Springs, Fla.; sons, Clinton Ray Smart of Midlothian, Claude Duane Smart of Matslick, Ky., and Ernest Lee Smart; brothers, Ben Smart of Sadler, E.B. Smart of Tucson, Ariz., and Marvin Smart of Lockland, Okla.; 12 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.

Mary O. Weems, 96
October 3, 1999
Funeral services were held for Mary O. Weems, of Houston, on Friday at Pemberton Funeral Home in Commerce. Rev. Donald E. Wright officiated, with burial in Rosemound Cemetery. Weems was born Aug. 6, 1903, in the Needmore Community of Delta County to John R. and Pearl Blair Stooksberry. She married Otis E. Weems. Weems was a former resident of Commerce, having lived in Houston for the past 40 years. She was a member of the Westberry Baptist Church of Houston. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother, who will be greatly missed and always remembered. She is preceded in death by her husband, Otis E. Weems and son, Winfred E. Weems. Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Ovetra Covin and Norma Hardy of Houston, Jo Ann and Charles Keith of Houston and Frieda and Shirley Hooten of Dallas; son and daughter-in-law, John Ed and Virginia Weems of Arlington; brothers, Howard Stooksberry, Hubert Stooksberry, Joe Stooksberry, Waydell Stooksberry and Finis Stooksberry; sister, Edna Ruth White; 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. For those who wish, please make donations to the charities of your choice.

James Weldon Dearing, 80

Services were held for James Weldon Dearing, of Dallas, at White Rock United Methodist Church on Sept. 16, with interment at Restland Memorial Park. Dearing was the son of Elzie and Iva Adams Dearing of Commerce. He was born June 13, 1919. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Dorothy Vick Dearing, brothers Glen Dearing and Bill Dearing and a stepbrother Jack Morgan. Survivors include his wife, Hattie Patton Dearing; two daughters, Pat Anderson and husband Bob of Louisville, Colo., and Sandy Shupp and husband Mike of Paris, Texas; brother, Waylon Dearing of Commerce; three sisters, Ila Ray Payton of Roswell, N.M., Bessie Lee Pair of Plainview, Texas, and Mary Roach and husband Derald of Cleveland, Texas; sister-in-law Fran Dearing of Abilene, Texas; two stepbrothers, Harry Morgan of Southaven, Miss. and John Morgan of El Paso, Texas; four grandchildren, Julie Craig, Michael Berlin, Amy Shupp and Mitch Anderson; and five great-grandchildren, Steven Biernacki, Trenton Shupp, Michelle Anderson, Austin and Holly Craig. He is also survived by stepchildren Patricia Mulkey and husband Clark, Jim Patton and wife Susan; step-grandchildren Curtis Mulkey, Jonathan Mulkey, Marie Karnes and Ray Patton; and step-great-grandchildren Sherri and Shawn Karnes. Dearing attended high school in Commerce. He moved to Dallas in 1937 where he went to work for the Good Luck Oil Company. He worked his way up through management and became a partner in the company. He opened the first Good Luck Hamburger stand in 1949 and opened several more before selling his interest in 1963. After selling his interest in Good Luck Oil's 50 stores in 1974, he entered into partnership in the Kwik Stop chain of convenience stores with his nephew David Dearing, and later his nephew Jim Dearing. He was a member of White Rock United Methodist Church and was a 32nd degree Mason and a Shriner. He piloted his own airplane for many years and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Memorial donations may be made to First United Methodist Church of Commerce.

Rose Hilton, 69
Graveside services for Rose Hilton, of Connerville, Okla., are Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999 at 1:30 p.m. at the Connerville Cemetery with Rev. Bob Schuler officiating. Corbin Funeral Home of Tishomingo, Okla. made the arrangements. Hilton was born in Aug. 10, 1930, in Asher, Okla., to Roy and Edith Lyles Hayes. She was educated in Pampa, Texas. On July 30, 1949, she married Earl Hilton in Wheeler, Texas. Hilton was a housewife, of the Baptist faith and had lived in Connerville for the past 30 years. She is survived by her husband, Earl of the the home; sons, Earl Hilton, Jr. of Sherman and Kenneth Hilton of Duncanville; daughters, Donna Colburn of Arlington and Susan McGough of Denison; brothers, Monroe Hayes and Homer Hayes, both of Illinois. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Hilton was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Ralph Hayes, Sonny Hayes and Robert Hayes.

James Floyd Hensley, 56

A memorial service to honor the life of James Floyd Hensley, of Quinlan, were held Thursday at the VFW #2559 in West Tawakoni. Jones-Walker & Son Funeral Home of Commerce were in charge of the arrangements. Hensley was born in Yuba City, Calif. on June 15, 1943, to Art McDaniel and Elvy Mae O'Brian. He died Sept. 21 at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Dallas. Hensley was a retired U.S. Army veteran of Viet Nam and worked as a cook at Willie's Restaurant in Quinlan. Survivors include his daughter, Kim Hensley of Quinlan; grandson, Michael Burnell of Quinlan; four other grandchildren; brothers, LeRoy McDaniel of Phoenix, Ariz., David Hensley of Marysville, Calif.; father, Art McDaniel of Yuba City, Calif. Hensley was preceded in death by his mother, Elvy Mae Hensley and a son, James F. Hensley, Jr.

Verna Zickefoose, 69
September 26, 1999
Funeral services for Verna Zickefoose, of Commerce, are tomorrow at 2 p.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Father D. Stanley Corcoran will officiate at the services arranged by Pemberton Funeral Home. Burial is in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Cumby. Pallbearers are Dale Mize, Lonnie Mize, Jeff Foster, Don Buck, Kenneth Bruhn and Steven Holley. Zickefoose was born in Olney, Texas, on Dec. 6, 1929 to Raymond A. and Stella Walton Christa. She then married James L. Zickefoose on Sept. 7, 1989 in Las Vegas. She moved to Commerce from Dallas in 1989. She had graduated from Olney High School in 1947 and was employed by Skaggs-Alpha-Beta in Dallas. She retired in 1992 after 23 years with the company. Zickefoose was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Commerce. She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Lonnie Norman Roark, June 19, 1986; daughter, Sherrie Lynn Roark; and sister, Ferrell King. Rosary will be at 6 p.m. today at Pemberton Funeral Home. Survivors include her husband, James L. Zickefoose of Commerce; three daughters and one son-in-law, Carol and Terry Holley of Commerce, Paula Reeves of Crowley and Diana Roberts of Wylie; sisters, Vida Scobee and Pat Carter of Olney; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Henry "Buddy" Clay Craig, 87

Funeral services for Henry "Buddy" Clay Craig of Ladonia were held yesterday at 2 p.m. at Pemberton Funeral Home in Commerce. David Gibson and Eddie Carder officiated at the service. Burial was in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Fannin County. Pallbearers were Jr. Herndon, Gary Don Anderson, Kenneth Thorton, Bill Wilson, Jr., Mike Anderson, John Arthur Smith, Audie Apple and Tommy Rowden. Honorary pallbearers were Bill Wilson, Harvey Lynn Melton, Arthur Reed Wishard, Bob Joyner and Sammy Wilson. Craig was born Jan. 30, 1912, in Dawson County, Ga., to John Henry and Ada Martin Craig. He then married Ruby Faye Maddon on Dec. 17, 1976, in Hugo, Okla. Craig was a longtime resident of the Commerce-Ladonia area. He was employed by the Dallas School District. He was a farmer until his retirement in 1976. He was a member of the Church of Christ in Commerce. Survivors include his wife, Ruby Faye Craig of Ladonia; brother, Bob Craig of Quinlan; sisters, Lizzy Tatum of Dawsonville, Ga. and Eunice Summerlin of Honey Grove; plus several nieces and nephews. Craig was preceded in death by his parents, two brother and four sisters.

Bob Binder, 80
September 15, 1999
Bob Binder, of Commerce, Texas died of heart failure Saturday, Sept. 11, in Austin, Texas. Bob was an out-going, friendly and beloved by all who met him. He was known far and wide for his intelligence, quick wit and sense of humor, kindness and his desire to bring a smile and happiness to all he met, regardless of station in life. He is survived by his son, Bob Binder, Jr., his two grandchildren Marguax, 15, and Paige 12, all of Austin, and by his niece, Carol Perry of Redondo Beach, Calif. Bob was born May 25, 1919, in Chicago, Ill., and attended the University of Illinois. Bob enlisted in the Army prior to WWII, went through OCS and became an officer, and was initially in the last Army horse cavalry unit, the Black Horse Cavalry of Chicago. Following that, he fought in WWII, Korea and Vietnam, retiring much decorated after a distinguished career in 1967 as a Lieutenant Colonel in Commerce, Texas. He served in Heidelberg, Germany at Army HQ Europe. Honolulu, Hawaii, at Army HQ Pacific, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, Purdue University as an ROTC Instructor, Fort Belvoir, Virginia and the Pentagon. Bob met and married his first wife, Louise Risinger, deceased, in 1942 in Paris, Texas, while stationed at Camp Maxey. They were married for 33 years and had one son, Bob Binder, Jr., who lives in Austin, Texas. After WWII, Bob got his master's degree at East Texas State University in Commerce, where he retired to in 1967 to teach advertising and public relations. He was elected to the Commerce City Council and as District Governor for the Lions Club, Dallas Region. Bob participated in Lions, Masons and the Nickel Coffee Club of Commerce. After a distinquished career as a professor, he retired in 1990 with his second wife and college sweetheart, Betty Corbiere, deceased, formerly of Blanchard, Mich. Bob had many titles, but he was proudest of being a dad, at which he was wonderful. Services were military and graveside at Austin Memorial Park, Hancock Boulevard, at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, arranged by Weed-Corley-Fish.
