Joey Burnes
Joseph "Joey" Burnes, 29, of Brownwood died Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001 in Brownwood. He was born Jan. 9, 1972 in Freeport to Allen L. and Dorothy Saucier Burnes. He was of the Protestant faith, attended the Special Opportunity Center in Kerrville for several years and was an avid collector and reader of maps. For the past two years he had been at the Southpark Developmental Center in Brownwood. He will be sadly missed by his friends in Bandera County. Mr. Burnes is survived by his parents, Allen and Dorothy Burnes of Bandera. Services were held on Monday, Sept. 24 at 10 a.m. at Grimes Chapel with Mr. Martin Smith officiating. Interment followed in the Bandera Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Glenn Meadows
Glenn, O. Meadows Jr., 68, of Kerrville died on Monday, Sept. 24 in Kerrville. He is survived by his wife Macye Stroms Meadows, formerly of Bandera. He served as the Center Point Postmaster and worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 33 years. A funeral service for Mr. Meadows will be on Wednesday, Sept. 26 at 2 p.m. at Grimes Funeral Chapel in Kerrville. A complete obituary will be published in The Bandera Review next week.

Avis L. Todd
Avis L. Todd, 87, of Bandera, died Friday, Oct. 19, 2001 at her residence. She was born Sept. 25, 1914 in Corpus Christi to Avis Brooks Thompson and Florence Dryer Thompson. She married Ralph Horton Todd on April 26, 1942 in San Diego, Calif. In addition to her husband, Ralph of Bandera, survivors include one daughter, Nan Liauzza and husband Jimmy of Houston; one son, David Brooks Todd of Dripping Springs, two brothers, Robert Thompson of Houston and Woodrow Thompson of Gonzales; eight grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. A private graveside service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Grimes Funeral Chapel of Bandera.

Stephen A. Williams
Stephen Anthony Williams, 36, of Pharr died on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001 at his resident. He was born Feb. 10, 1965 in Beaumont to Kenneth L. Williams and Mildred Opal Hargraves Williams. He was affiliated with Calvary Baptist Church in McAllen and was a generous man who lived by the phrase 'Love Thy Neighbor.' Survivors include his parents Kenneth Lee and Opal Williams of Pharr, three sisters, Vera Lee Tipton and husband Kenneth of The Woodlands, Diane McNight and husband James of Baytown and Marylin Kaye Hilton and husband Homer of Longview; two brothers, Christopher Williams and wife Trudy of Pipe Creek and Patrick Williams and wife Tammy of Pipe Creek; local niece and nephew Michelle and J.T. Turner of Pipe Creek and numerous other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Gerald Dwayne Williams and a sister, Robin Janiece Williams. A memorial graveside service was held on Friday, Oct. 5 at 2 p.m. at the Pipe Creek cemetery with Rev. Frank Pullin officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Grimes Funeral Chapel.

Frank S. Reinhardt III
Frank S. Reinhardt III, 59, of Lakehills died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born Feb. 26, 1942 in Houston, Texas to Frank and Adeline Reinhardt. He grew up and lived in Houston until 1988 when he moved to the Hill Country. He was a salesman for medical supplies for many years. He loved auto racing and rebuilding cars. He had a great sense of humor and he will be remembered by many. He was a member of the Lakehills United Methodist Church. Mr. Reinhardt is survived by his wife Mary Anne Reinhardt of Lakehills; one son, Brandon M. Reinhardt and wife Ruth; step-children, Tim Hovendick and wife Rose, Mike Hovendick and wife Sharon, and Mitch Hovendick; Susie Chan and husband Anthony; and three grandchildren. Memorial services were held Oct. 2 at Lakehills United Methodist Church with pastor Ellen Ely officiating. In lieu of flowers a memorial may be made to the Lakehills United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 565, Lakehills TX 78063, or VistaCare Family Hospice, 420 Water Street #104, Kerrville, TX 78028. Arrangements were by Wright's Funeral Parlor in Bandera.

Don Woolley
Don "Raunchy" Woolley, longtime Bandera visitor and friend, died in Houston on Oct. 3, 2001. The Woolley family began coming to Peaceful Valley Ranch more than 40 years ago, and returned at least once every year. Retirement brought opportunities for more frequent visits, and Raunchy and Marion could be found dining at Billie Gene's or O.S.T., checking out the ice cream section of the grocery store, or dancing the night away at Arky's. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Marion, and by two daughters, Becky and Susan, granddaughter Heather and her husband James, and by grandsons Michael and Bill. His daughter, Gail, preceded him in death. Services were held in Houston on Oct. 5.

Dr. Jesse M. Pike Sr.
Dr. Jesse M. Pike Sr. died Friday, Oct. 5 at Watauga Medical Center in Boone, N.C. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and returned to Concord after the war to restart his father's family pharmacy in 1951. He was noted for his civic contributions and his life was filled with accomplishments in the field of pharmacy. His chain of seven pharmacies was first computerized in the early 1970s, long before most pharmacies considered them necessary. A member of the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy for 10 years, Dr. Pike received nearly every state and national award in his profession, including an Honorary Doctor of Science degree from Campbell University School of Pharmacy. Survivors include his wife Betty Minter Ramsey Pike, a Bandera County landowner, daughter Lourene Pike Thaxton, a son, Jesse M. Pike Jr., and a stepson, Wayne Ramsey. A memorial service was held at Central United Methodist Church in Concord. Memorials may be sent to the UNC School of Pharmacy in Chapel Hill or to Campbell University School of pharmacy in Buies Creek, N.C. Wilkinson Funeral Home in Concord handled the arrangements.

Iris Carneiro
Iris Corine Carneiro, 90, of San Antonio, died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2001. She was a former president of San Antonio Group of Athena Chapter Delphian Society and the Raoiota Chapter. She served as chairman of the Spanish and Garden Roundtable. Mrs. Carneiro was also president of the Kamoma Chapter, and Chairman of the Music and Drama Roundtable, as well as the Fine Arts Roundtable. She was vice-president of the Girls Council at Aganier Hall, a member of The San Antonio Gardenia and Musical Club and the San Antonio Clubwomen of Today. Mrs. Carneiro was a former member of the San Antonio Women's Foundation and the San Antonio Council of Presidents. She was an active member of the Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary, the Harp and Shamrock Society of Texas, the Hermann Sons Anton Wenzel Lodge and Anglers. She often volunteered with the United Way Women's Division and the Boy's Club of San Antonio. Survivors include a granddaughter, two great-granddaughters and a great-great-grandson; nieces Melba Meyer and Elsie Brooks, formerly of Bandera; a nephew and several great-nieces and nephews. Services were held Wednesday at the Porter Loring Chapel in San Antonio, with interment in Sunset Memorial Park.

Alvin Clay Cothran
Alvin Clay Cothran died on Sunday, Oct. 7, 2001 in Medford, Ore. Family members said, "Clay is and will always be loved by all of his family." Survivors include one daughter, Amanda Cothran of Pasadena; two granddaughters, Haley and Cristol both of Pasadena; one brother, Louis Cothran Jr. of Bandera; one sister, Carol Mullins of Kerrivlle; two nieces, Stephanie Adamson and Denise Mullins; and three nephews, James Cothran, J.R. Faulkner and Eric Cothran. Mr. Cothran was preceded in death by his parents, Louis A. Cothran Sr. and Ina P. Cothran. Memorial services will be held at Brauning Lake in San Antonio on Saturday, Oct. 20 at 11 a.m.

Johnnie R. Nordlund
Johnnie Ruth Nordlund, 73, died on Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001. She is survived by her husband, Gordon Nordlund of Lakehills. She is also survived by a son, John Riggins of Pleasanton; a daughter, Linda Ruth Dalton of Wimberly; a stepdaughter, Linda Kay Fitzgerald of Mesquite; a sister, Gladys Stokes of Invernes, Fla.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mrs. Nordlund was preceded in death by her parents, John and Rosita Stokes of Istachatta, Fla. And a sister, Dorothy Sappington of Gainsville, Fla. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to VNA and Hospice, 8721 Botts Street, San Antonio, 78217. Arrangements were under the direction of Sunset Northwest Funeral Home in San Antonio.

Mildred R. Reade
Mildred R. Reade, 80, of Bandera, died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2001 at her residence. She was born March 14, 1921 in San Antonio to Henry Ward Sams and Anna Rose Monken Sams. Mrs. Reade moved to Bandera two years ago from Colorado Springs, Colo. and was a homemaker. Survivors include two daughters, Cindy Beckman and husband Shyne of Bandera and Relinda Spicer of San Antonio; two sons, Leroy E. Blake, Jr., and wife Cookie of Bergheim and Gregory Blake and wife Hedy of San Antonio; seven grandchildren, Jason Cuellar, Fidel Cuellar Jr., Leroy Blake, Steven Blake, Stephanie Algiere, Jennifer L. Blake, and Michael Spicer; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by husband Jim Reade and son Michael Blake. Private family services will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction from Grimes Funeral Chapel of Bandera.

Ruth Mansfield
Mary Ruth Davenport Mansfield, was born Nov. 23, 1912 in Bandera, Texas. She died on Oct. 15, 2001 in Hondo, Texas. She was 88 years old at the time of her death. She was the daughter of William Joseph and Norma Johnson Davenport. She was married to Robert (Bob) Lee Mansfield on Aug. 7, 1935. Preceding her in death were her husband, two brothers, Joseph P. Davenport and James G. Davenport, and one sister, Margaret Davis. She is survived by three daughters and their husbands, Barbara Lynn Mazurek, Shelby Lea Bennett and husband Joe, Mary Jo Costello and husband Jim; seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Mrs. Mansfield was a life long member of the First Baptist Church in Bandera. Services were held Friday, Oct. 19, 2001 at Grimes Chapel in Bandera, with Rev. Frank Pullin and Rev. Joel Garcia officiating. Interment followed in Bandera Cemetery. Pallbearers were Mark Bennet, Robert H. Mazurek, Hubert R. Mazurek, Edward J. Costello IV, Rhett C. Butler, Thomas Davis, and James G. Davenport. Honorary pallbearers were Rick Anderson, John D. Cox, John G. James, Art Koog, Norman Mansfield, Bruce Montague, Bobby Preston, Joe Preston, Dale Rix, and Craig Tips. Memorials be sent to the First Baptist Church of Bandera or to Templo Camino Nuevo Bautista in Bandera.

Meleese A. Rugh
Meleese A. Rugh, 87, of Bandera, died Monday, Oct. 15, 2001 of injuries sustained in a traffic accident Sunday. She was born in Wilson County, Texas on Sept. 10, 1914. Meleese attended school in Bandera and in January of 1933 married Ashley Rugh, also of Bandera. She was active in the Methodist Church, Order of Eastern Star, Fine Arts Club, Democratic Party, Frontier Times Museum, American Cancer Society and the Bandera Hunters BBQ. She and Ashley were co-founders and co-chairmen of the hunter's welcome event for many years. Meleese was preceded in death by husband and a son, Ronald E. Rugh. She is survived by Ashley Rugh Jr., and wife Clare of College Station; daughter-in-law Candyn Rugh of Tarpley; five grandsons and seven great-grandchildren. Also survived by one brother, Gene Allen of Carrizo Springs and two sisters, Ellen Finley of Uvalde and Anita Collinsworth and husband R.L. of Granbury. Memorials may be sent to Bandera UMC, P.O. Box 128, Bandera TX 78003.

Mary Lou Sanchez
Mary Lou Sanchez, 71, died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001. She was born May 19, 1930, in Erlanger, N.C. to Leon Glass and Lula Jenkins Glass. She loved the Hill Country and was living with her husband Tim and son David in Camp Bandina during the flood of 1978. They lost everything, including their 11-year-old son David. Mrs. Sanchez enjoyed gardening, cats, birds, fishing and especially loved spending time with her grandchildren. She was proud of her work in the mills in North Carolina prior to becoming a wife and mother. She is survived by her husband Timothy David Sanchez of Bandera, a young Marine she met in March 1953 while he was stationed in North Carolina. They married in August 1953 and she spent her last moments on earth with him. Other survivors include: three daughters, Brenda Carol Davila, Kathy Gail Bazzy and husband Michael of San Antonio and Patty Ann Haby and husband Kevin of Medina; six grandchildren, Rebecca, Joshua and Sarah Bazzy, Chance Haby, Jason and Sonja Davila; two cousins, Jimmy Lee Campbell and Betty Jean Cloaninger of Winston Salem, N.C.; and her best friend, Faye Pooley of North Carolina. She was preceded in death by her mother Lula Smith, her father Leon Glass, Ed Smith, and grandsons David Nicholas Sanchez and Matthew Ryan Ocha. Services were held Saturday, Oct. 20, at Wright's Funeral Parlor, Bandera. Graveside services were held at Oak Rest cemetery in Medina. Martin Smith and Michael Bazzy officiated.

Isidoro Aquilar
Isidoro "Lolo" Aguilar, 78, of Bandera, died Sunday, Oct. 21, 2001 in a Kerrville hospital. He was born April 4, 1923 in Lytle, Texas to Augustine and Maria Villareal Aguilar. He married Elvira Montana on Jan. 27, 1943 in Lytle. She survives. Mr. Aguilar served in the Army during World War II, worked for the Parker family on the Hi-Gate Ranch for years, and was a very family oriented man. In addition to his wife Elvira of Bandera, survivors include one daughter, Avelinda Windslow and husband Claude of San Antonio; five sons, Robert Aguilar and wife Mary of Almagordo, New Mex., Joe B. Aguilar of San Antonio, Alfred Aguilar and wife Carol of Pipe Creek, Isidoro Aguilar Jr., and wife Juanita of Bandera, and Abel Aguilar and wife Olivia of Kerrville; 13 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. A Rosary was recited on Oct. 23 at Grimes Chapel, and Funeral Mass is scheduled for today, Oct. 24, at 2 p.m. at Grimes Chapel with Deacon Robert Garza officiating. A private family interment will be held at a later date.

Virginia Overstreet
Virginia Overstreet, known "Gin" or "Granny Gin", was born in Bandera on Sept. 8, 1919 and died on Oct. 22, 2001 at the age of 82. She was residing at the River Hills Care Center at the time of her death. Mrs. Overstreet raised her family in San Angelo before returning to Bandera in 1965 to assist in the care of her father, Andrew Pyka. She was a caring, loving mother and wife who enjoyed fishing, cooking and watching nature out her windows. She was a longtime member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Smokey Davenport and Bob Overstreet; her parents, Andrew and Magdalene Pyka; and a step-grandson, Trent Jonas. She is survived by her three children, Claybourne Davenport and his wife Helen of Bandera, Lynn Jonas and her husband Bubba of San Angelo, and Bo Overstreet and his wife Kathy of Austin; two sisters, Evelyn 'Snuffie' Short of Bandera and Iris Elkins of Friendswood; one brother, George Pyka and his wife Iona of LaWard; seven grandchildren, Boone Davenport, Sue Ann and Ron Dendy, David and Jane Davenport, Alex and Sarah Davenport, Callen and Michelle Hight, Amy Overtstreet, and Kathleen Overstreet; and three step-grandchildren, Travis and Rebekah Jonas, Tim Jonas, and Nikki and Charlie Miranda; 10 great-grandchildren, April Goodlander and Wesley Davenport, Ronnie and Maddie Dendy, Booker, Brigitte and Danielle Davenport, Matthew Davenport, and twins Bradley and Brayden Hight; and one step-great-grandson, Trent Miranda; and one great-great-grandson, Coy Goodlander. A memorial Mass was held at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church on Saturday, Oct. 27. Memorials may be made to the St. Stanislaus Catholic Church or VistaCare Family Hospice of Kerrville.

Annie Coker
Annie Muriel Coker Hickman, 95, of Kerrville, died Monday, Oct. 22, 2001 at her residence after a sudden illness. A resident of Kerrville since 1952, she formerly lived in Ft. Stockton and Houston. She had been an occupational therapist with the Kerrville State Hospital, retiring in 1969. She was a member of the Worldwide Church of God and a member of Joshua D. Brown Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Joy and James Putnam of Kerrville; son and daughter-in-law, Loyd and Donna Hickman of Bandera; sister, Lorene Wehmhoefer of Dallas; brother, Gilbert 'Jack' Coker of Houston; nine grandchildren, Susie Short Rhodes, Annette Lee, Les Short, Jo Anderson, Jake Short, Bill Hickman, Jeri Causey, Jeanie Chastain, and Jennifer Suta; 19 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Thursday, Oct. 25 from the chapel of the Kerrville Funeral Home with Rev. Will Johnson officiating. Interment was at Hanna cemetery in Cherokee, Texas. The grandchildren served as pallbearers.

Wilford Bell
Wilford Bell, 84, of Rockport, died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2001 in a Corpus Christi hospital. He was born Feb. 1, 1917 in Floresville, Texas to John Bradley Bell and Louise Weston Sims Bell. On April 22, 1990, he married Mary Ila Gaskins in Aransas Pass. He served his country in the Army during World War II. After the war, he worked for Smith Chevrolet in San Antonio, then bought the Fix-It Shop in San Antonio. Mr. Bell moved to Bandera in 1970 and opened Bell's Fix-It Shop. He retired in 1985. He was a member of the Worldwide Church of God. In addition to his wife, Mary of Rockport, survivors include one daughter, Sharon Ann Elmendorf and husband Robert of College Station; one son, John Charles Bell and wife Kathy of Chattanooga, Tenn.; two sisters, Elna Louise Triber of San Antonio, and Ima Lea Perido of San Antonio; two step-sons, Loyd Curby and Richard Curby of Aransas Pass; one step-daughter, Mary Moses of Rockport; 15 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by the mother of his children, Lona Lea Bell, and a son, Wilford Bradley Bell Jr. Services were held Oct. 27 at Grimes Chapel with Mr. Frank Parson and Mr. Don Ricks officiating. Interment followed in the Bandera Cemetery.

Leah Whitehead
Leah A. Whitehead, 91, of Medina, died Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2001 in a Kerrville care center. She was born March 11,1910 in Medina and was a lifetime resident. She was a retired seamstress for Collins of Texas and was a member of First Baptist Church in Medina. She was preceded in death by her husband, Len A. Whitehead. Survivors include a daughter, Frances Smith and husband, Doug of Center Point; a brother, J.B. Coulter of Baytown, and two grandchildren, Jody Vanicek and husband, Glenn of Parker, Colo. and Guy Smith of Kerrville. Funeral services for Mrs. Whitehead were held on Friday, Oct. 26, at Grimes Funeral Chapels in Bandera with Mr. Louis Melton officiating. Interment followed in Oak Rest cemetery in Medina. Pallbearers were Todd Whitewood, Glenn Vanicek, Randy McNaughton, Dean Coulter, Buddy Hubble and Gerold Long. Memorials may be sent to the American Diabetes Association.
