Leonard Marks
Leonard Marks, M.D., of San Antonio died suddenly Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002. Services were held Monday, Feb. 4 at Porter Loring Mortuary in San Antonio. Dr. Marks served as Medical Director for the Bandera County Emergency Medical Service for the past 15 years. A large contingent of present and former members of the Bandera County EMS attended the service. Bandera County EMS Director Mike Naughton said, "Dr. Marks' unselfish service to Bandera County will be sorely missed."

Lillian Bradford
Lillian F. Bradford, 81, of Bandera died on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002 in a local care center. She was born June 11, 1920 in Warsaw, Mo. to Irvin and Beatrice C. Wingate Wickliffe. She married Sam L. Bradford in Cameron County Texas on Dec. 11, 1937. He preceded her in death on June 23, 1986. Mrs. Bradford was a member of the Church of Christ, an avid quilt maker who won many awards for her quilts, a member of the VFW Women's Auxiliary Post 9176 and a member of the Multiple Sclerosis Society, San Antonio. Survivors include three daughters, Rilla Stephens of Bandera, Linda Foster of Bandera and Kay Ferrell and husband Terry of San Antonio; two sons, Sammy M. Bradford and wife Mitzi of Bandera and Halley 'Butch' Dean Bradford and wife Judy of Medina; a sister, Doris Wickliffe of Bandera; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband Sam, Mrs. Bradford was preceded in death by one sister, Wanda Fayard. Graveside services were held on Saturday, Feb. 9 at 2 p.m. at Bandera Cemetery with Chaplain Jack Cook officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Grimes Funeral Chapel of Bandera.

Emmett Edwards
William Emmett 'Bill' Edwards, 83, of Pipe Creek, died Monday, Feb. 11, 2002 in a local care center. He was born Jan. 22, 1919 in Selma, Calif. to Jesse William and Leora Edith Buckner Edwards. He grew up in Pipe Creek. Emmett was an air conditioning contractor in Gonzales until five years ago when he moved back to Pipe Creek. He was a life-long musician and upon returning to this community, played the fiddle at various jam sessions in the county, especially the one in Medina. Survivors include two daughters, Sue Buckhart of Pipe Creek and Gail Bowie and husband Bill, also of Pipe Creek; one brother, J. B. Edwards and wife Helen of Pipe Creek; and five grandchildren, Royce Bowie, Marie Bowie, Russell Bowie, Jennifer Burkhart, and Laura Pes. He was preceded in death by his wife Betty Edwards. Services were held Thursday, Feb. 14 at Grimes Chapel, with Rev. Doug Johnson officiating. Interment followed in the Pipe Creek Cemetery. Pallbearers were Bill Bowie, Jay Edwards, Keith Mansfield, Sidney Whitehead, Royce Bowie, Jess Edwards, Brent Mansfield, and Royce Towns. Live music was provided by friends. Memorials may be made to Vista Hospice, 420 Water St., Kerrville, TX and/or the American Lung Association of Texas, P.O. Box 26460, Austin, TX 78755-0460.

Jack V. Messina
Jack V. Messina, 78, of Pipe Creek, died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2002 at the VA hospital in Kerrville, Texas. He was born on May 18, 1923 in Chenyville, La. to Joseph Messina and Mary Sircha Messina. He was married to Inez Lowery in 1948. He served in the United States Army from 1942 through 1948 when he joined the United States Air Force where he served until 1972. He retired as a Senior Master Sergeant. He fought in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He was with the 101st Airborne, 82nd Airborne and the 508 Red Devils during World War II. He received a Silver Star in WW II for leading a platoon in an attack and an Air Medal in Vietnam on a combat mission, Meritorious Service Medal in Vietnam and a Commendation Medal for outstanding duty in the Air Force in the Philippines. He was proud of his years of service with the Air Force pararescue team whose motto is 'That others may live' and of his service with the S.E.R.F. (Survival­ Evasion­ Resistance­ Escape). He also earned his Master Air Crew Wings, Master Jump Wings and a Combat Infantry Badge. He is survived by his daughters, Valerie Messina Wood of Pipe Creek, Texas and Wanda Messina of Atlanta, Ga.; one son, Jack V. Messina Jr.; four brothers, Nick Messina, Tanner Messina and Frank Messina, all of Louisiana and Sam Messina of California; four sisters, Virginia Gaspard, Mary Rose Manichia and Josephine Vinson, all of Louisiana, and Sadie Morino of California; two grandchildren, Bobby and Bruce Messina; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife; and two brothers, Joe Messina and S.J. Messina. Funeral services were held Feb. 14 at Wright's Funeral Parlor in Bandera. Graveside services were held Feb. 16 at Owens Family Cemetery outside Lumberton N.C. with full military honors.

Kenneth Magoon
Kenneth Charles Magoon, 34, died on Feb. 13, 2002 at home in Medina County. He was born on Jan. 26, 1968 in Warner Robins, Ga. to Michael Patrick and Betty Jo Magoon. Mr. Magoon was a member of the Lakehills United Methodist Church, the Mico Volunteer Fire Department, the Medina Valley EMS and the American Legion Post in Lakehills. He was a flight simulator technician with the L-3 Communication Corp. and had served in the U.S. Air Force. Survivors include his wife Debbie Rudd Magoon, sons Brett Shane and Bradley Sean Magoon, and daughter Brittany Shannen Magoon all of Mico; parents Michael Magoon of Jacksonville, N.C. and Betty Jo Magoon of Staunton, Va.; and father-in-law and mother-in-law Dale D. and Lenora S. Rudd of Altus, Okla. Visitation was held on Monday, Feb. 18 at the Tondre-Guinn Funeral Home in Castroville. The funeral service was held at the Lakehills United Methodist Church on Thursday, Feb. 19 at noon with the Rev. Ellen Ely officiating. Interment followed at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio with military honors. Members of the Medina Valley EMS and the Mico Volunteer Fire Department served as pallbearers.

Charlie Bivens
Charlie Bivens, 76, of Lakehills died Wednesday, Feb. 13 in a San Antonio hospital. He was born Dec. 21, 1925 in Jennings, La. to Evais Charles and Mary Brown Bivens. He married Lenora Flanders in Harlingen on Feb. 26, 1969. She survives. During World War II, Mr. Bivens served in the U.S. Navy at D-Day on the beaches of Normandy and also in the battle of Iwo-Jima in the Pacific. He was a member of the Civil Air Patrol, the owner and operator of his own automotive paint and body shop 'Charlie's Trim Shop' in Brownsville for 30 years and worked 17 years for Hamilton Electric of Harlingen. In addition to his wife Lenora of Lakehills, survivors include a daughter, Susan Bivens of Lakehills; a son, Carl Bivens of Lakehills; a sister, Clara Parker of Magnolia, Ark.; a brother Carlton Bivens of Inez and a grandson, Erik Bivens of Lakehills. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association. A private service and interment will be held at a later date. Arrangements were under the direction of Grimes Funeral Chapel of Bandera.

Novella Kelley
Novella Kelley, 89, of Lakehills died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002 in a San Antonio hospital. She was born Oct. 27, 1912 in San Antonio to Hardy and Delia Lacey Dozier. She married John W. Kelley in San Antonio on Oct. 30, 1928. He preceded her in death in Feb. 1976. Mrs. Kelley was a member of St. Victor's Chapel of Lakehills, was a lifelong homemaker and was a member of the American Legion Woman's Auxiliary Post 410. Survivors include a son, Robert Kelley of Lakehills; two nieces, Melanie Jackson of Franklin, Tenn. and Martha Manuptelli of San Antonio; two nephews, Jack Dozier and Roy Dozier of San Antonio and one son-in-law, Jay Hartman of Hondo. In addition to her husband John, Mrs. Kelley was preceded in death by her daughter, Cecelia Hartman in 1998. A rosary was held on Sunday, Feb. 17 at St. Victor's Chapel with Brother Bobby Stein officiating. The funeral mass was held on Monday, Feb. 18 at St. Victor's Chapel with Father Stan Oleksy officiating. Interment followed in San Fernando Cemetery 11, San Antonio. Arrangements were under the direction of Grimes Funeral Chapel of Bandera.

Otto Trenkelbach
Otto Trenkelbach, 86, of Pipe Creek died on Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002 in a Boerne care center. He was born Jan. 24, 1916 in New Braunfels to Berthold and Louise Jandt Trenkelbach. He married Mada Bradshaw in Bandera on Aug. 21, 1938. She survives. Mr. Trenkelbach was a carpenter, a member of the American Legion, Bandera Post #157, a member of Carpenters & Jointers Union in San Antonio and served his country faithfully during WWII. In addition to his wife Mada, survivors include two sons, Jack Trenkelbach and wife Sandra of Pipe Creek and Gary Trenkelbach and wife Peggy of Johnson City; a sister, Louise Grimm of Barbosa; six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Services were held Monday, Feb. 18 at 2 p.m. at Grimes Chapel with Rev. Ellen Ely officiating. Interment followed at Bandera Cemetery.

Maggie Buchanan
Margaret 'Maggie' Elizabeth Adlof-Buchanan, R.N., 73, of Lakehills died on Feb. 15, 2002 in Lakehills. She was born in Sherman on July 9, 1928 to H.H. Adlof Jr. and Ruby Jackson Adlof and a member of the Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by a husband, Charles Buchanan and a son, David Wayne Buchanan. Mrs. Buchanan is survived by grandchildren Christy, Thomas and Matthew Buchanan; two brothers, David P. Adlof and Bobby C. Adlof and one sister, Velma Adlof of Sherman. The funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sherman on Wednesday, Feb. 20. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Lakehills American Legion or the Medina Lake Volunteer Fire Department. She loved both organizations.

Jack Storms
Jack Alba Storms, 87, of Bandera, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2002 in a San Antonio hospital. He was born March 9, 1914 in Bandera to Alba and Mary Etta McKinney Storms. Jack, affectionately known as 'Tater,' was a rancher most of his life in Bandera County and during World War II he served in the Army from 1941 to 1945 in the Pacific Theater. He was awarded the Purple Heart. Survivors include two sisters, Katherine Burton of Bandera and Ann S. Grant of Wisconsin, a nephew, Ralph Wakeley, and a niece, Mary Grant. He was preceded in death by a sister, Alice Etta Wakely and a brother, Lewis Storms. Graveside services were held Friday, Feb. 22, at Oak Rest Cemetery with Rev. Dennis Thompson officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Grimes Funeral Chapel of Bandera.

Mary Worley
Mary Worley, 96, of Bandera, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2002 in a local care center. She was born Aug. 23, 1905 in Caddo Mills, Texas to Albert S. and Nellie Smith Jeffery. On June 12, 1927, she married Ovo K. Worley in San Benito, Texas. He preceded her in death in March 1968. Mary was a retired Civil Service Clerk, a member of the Bandera United Methodist Church, a member of O.E.S. Bandera Chapter #643, and was a very avid rock hound. Survivors include one sister, Linnie Caffall of Bandera, and one brother, W.B. Jeffrey of Del Rio. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three sisters and four brothers. Memorial services will be held Saturday, March 2, 2002 at 2 p.m. at the Bandera United Methodist Church. A private family interment will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Grimes Funeral Chapel of Bandera.

Becky Heinen
Becky Heinen, 43, of Bandera, died Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2002 at her residence. She was born Feb. 6, 1959 in Painesville, Ohio to Howard Lee Flynn and Bonnie Jean Noe. On March 17, 1988, she married Frank Edward Heinen in Boerne. He preceded her in death on April 28, 2000. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church. Survivors include her father, Howard Flynn of Boerne; daughter, Kathleen Heinen of Bandera; two sons, Adam Wilson of Boerne and James Heinen of Bandera; two step-sisters, Cinda Runci and Bonnie Jean Harris; and two brothers, Michael A. Flynn and Terrence L. Flynn of Boerne; and step brother, Lewis Runci. In addition to her husband Frank, she was preceded in death by her mother, Bonnie Jean Noe. A memorial service was held Wednesday, Feb. 27, at Grace Lutheran Church, with Pastor C. Earl Mahan officiating. A private family interment will be held at a later date. Arrangements were under the direction of Grimes Funeral Chapel of Bandera.

Sadie Preston
Sadie Renee Preston, born Feb. 14, 2002 died Feb. 21, 2002 in Webster, Texas. Her parents are Danny and Lori Preston of League City, Texas. Paternal grandparents are Bob and Carol Preston of Bandera; maternal grandparent is Judye Uriegas of Jacksonville, Fla.; great-grandparents are Joe and Ruby Preston of Bandera, and Maurice and Sarah Uriegas of Galveston. Other survivors include uncle Dan Rocha of Jacksonville, Fla; aunt Kathy Simmons of Alvin, Texas; and uncle Keith Preston of Houston. Graveside services were held Monday, Feb. 25, in Webster at Forest Park East Cemetery, 'Baby Land,' with Pastor Keith Preston officiating.

Beulah Mazurek
Beulah 'Tyne' Mazurek, 89, of Bandera, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002 in a San Antonio rehabilitation center. She was born June 8, 1912 in St. Clare, Mo. to Earl and Rosa Pierce Walker. On Dec. 26, 1936, she married Julius P. Mazurek in Bandera. Mrs. Mazurek was a homemaker and a member of St. Stanislaus Chatolic Church. Survivors include one sister, Clara Bickford of Oklahoma; three grandchildren, Leslie Dee Kurtz, Janet Berry and John Wesley Lewis; three step-grandchildren, Roland Ramirez, John K. Ramirez, and Ernest Ramirez and wife Martha; three great- grandchildren, Lenee D. Pulver, Lucas Swarthout, and Thomas Berry; two great-great-grandchildren; and two daughters-in-law, Irene Lewis of San Antonio and Claudia Wotipka of Baytown. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one sister, Issa Walker, two brothers, Fred and John Walker and a grandson, Kyle Lewis. Graveside services were held Friday, March 1, at St. Stanislaus Catholic Cemetery with Deacon Robert Garza officiating. Arrangements were by Grimes Funeral Chapel of Bandera.

Jos. Montagno Jr.
Joseph Montagno Jr. 77, of Bandera, died Sunday, March 3, 2002 at his residence. He was born May 6, 1924 in Hayward, Calif. to Joseph Montagno Sr. and Ann Silva Montagno. He married Ulah Kester in 1947. Mr. Montagno was a carpenter and woodworking craftsman, building stagecoaches for Wells Fargo Bank, trains and many other artistic projects. In addition to his wife of Bandera, survivors include two sons, Joe Montagno III and Larry E. Montagno, both of Bandera; one sister Nancy Myers of Washington; one grandson, Nicholas Anthony Montagno; one great-great-grandson, Christopher Montagno, and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial services were held Thursday, March 7 at Grimes Chapel with Deacon Robert Garza officiating. A private family interment will be held at a later date.

Wm. Clyde Wright
William Clyde (Pug) Wright Sr., 80, of Bandera died Tuesday, March 5 in the VA Hospital in Kerrville. He was born Jan. 9, 1922. He was preceded in death by his wife, June Adams Wright, parents Judge Granville and Dora Coffey Wright, and four brothers: Johnny, Clay, Smith and Raymond 'Spot' Wright. Survivors include daughters Dora Leola Schaefer of Bandera and Debbie June Daniels of New Braunfels; sons Billy Clyde Wright Jr. of Bandera and Granville Patrick Wright of San Antonio; one sister, Linna Walker of Bandera; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mr. Wright served his country in World War II, entering the U.S. Army on Nov. 19, 1942. He was part of the 99th Signal Battalion and fought in two major battle campaigns. The first was the Bismarck Archipelago Campaign and the second was in the Southern Philippines. He was a trained marksman sniper. He earned numerous decorations and citations for his service, including the Pacific Campaign Medal with three Bronze Stars and the Philippine Liberation Medal with two Bronze Stars. He also received a Good Conduct Medal, one Victory Ribbon, one Service Stripe, and five Overseas Service Bars. He will be laid to rest in a private ceremony.

Nona North
Nona North, 72, of Bandera, died Thursday, March 7, 2002 in a Kerrville hospital. She was born Aug. 22, 1929 in Graford, Texas to William Neal and Olney Bera Davis Wagnon. On Aug. 14, 1950, she married Bobby North in Odessa. Mrs. North was a homemaker and was a Baptist. In addition to her husband of Bandera, survivors include two daughters, Kerral Robertson of Springtown, and Glenyth Barrows and husband Bob or Bulverde; two grandchildren, Micah Robertson of Athens, Ohio, and Joshua Robertson of Springtown; and three sisters, Pat Bonner of Wichita Falls, Martha Mattox of DeSoto, and Donna Johnston of College Station. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Joe Wagnon. Graveside services were held Saturday, March 9 at Bandera Cemetery with the Rev. Wade Strother officiating. Arrangements were by Grimes Funeral Chapel.

Marshall Rinehart
A.M. 'Marshall' Rinehart, 92, of Bandera died on March 7, 2002 in a San Antonio hospital. He was born on Sept. 5, 1909 in Palacios. He was preceded in death by his parents C.E. and Ruby Rinehart, brother Marvin Rinehart and sister Blanche Rinehart Churchill. Mr. Rinehart was an athlete and played on Pasadena High School's first football team. He was a cowboy and an avid hunter and fisherman. He retired from Reed Roller Bit Company after 37 years of service. He and his wife moved to Bandera in 1980. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Ollie Rinehart. He is also survived by daughter Faye Wells, son Paul Bodiford, four nephews, Alton Churchill, Marshall Churchill, Tommy Rinehart and David Rinehart and many friends. Graveside services were conducted by Rev. Don Meador, long-time friend, and pastor of the John Wesley United Methodist Church in Houston. He was buried at the South Park Cemetery in Pearland on March 12. Pallbearers were Dee Causey, Bill Beck, Alton Churchill, Marshall Churchill, Melvin Dickens and Aaron Tschirhart. Honorary pallbearers were Charlton Albert, Tommy Rinehart, David Rinehart and Roger Schultz. He was a kind gentle person who was loved by everyone who knew him.

Betty Ford
Betty Causey Ford, 59, of Kerrville, died Friday, March 8, 2002, in a San Antonio hospital. She was born to Mickie Hubble Causey and Willis W. Causey in Bandera on Sept. 5, 1942. In 1961 she graduated from Bandera High School and on June 30, 1962, she married Claude Ford in Kerrville. Mrs. Ford was employed at Edgewater Care Center in Kerrville where she had served as receptionist for many years. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy and she was devoted to all her family. She was a member of Calvary Temple Church in Kerrville. Survivors include her husband of Kerrville; mother, Mickie Causey of Bandera; two daughters, Christine Ferguson and husband Bryan of Houston, and Kalie Ladell and husband Jared of Kerrville; two sons, Charles Ford and wife April of San Antonio and Wesley Ford and wife Tisha of Kerrville; one sister, Janette Muecke and husband Wesley of Bandera; three brothers, Walter 'Butch' Causey of Marble Falls, Willis 'Dee' Causey and wife Jeri of Bandera, and John Causey and wife Sylvia of Kerrville; five grandchildren, Ryan Jeter, Cory Jeter, Tyler Ford, Trenton Ford and Colten Ford; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 12, at Grimes Funeral Chapel in Bandera, with Rev. Del Way officiating. Interment followed at Pipe Creek Cemetery with Ben Causey, Danny Causey, David Muecke, Carl Hisey, Heath Thompson, and E. J. Baker as Pallbearers.
