Waide Messer, 50

Waide Messer of Memphis, Tennessee, former pastor in Santa Anna, died February 20th in Winberley, Texas. A fund is being set up at Santa Anna National Bank for the family of Waide Messer. Donations to help with traveling expenses would be appreciated. Funeral services were held at 11:00am Saturday, February 24, at First Baptist Church in Canyon with Rev. Mark Bryant officiating. Burial was held at Llano Cemetery. A Memorial Service will be held at Ridgeway Baptist Church in Memphis, Tennessee on March 3rd. Waide Messer of Memphis, Tennessee went home to be with the Lord on February 20, 2007 in Wimberley, Texas. Wade was 50 years old and had just moved down to Wimberley to be the Associate Pastor of First Baptist Church there. His first day "on the job" was February 19th and he passed away in his sleep that night. Waide pastored First Baptist Church Santa Anna, Texas, First Baptist Church Friona, Texas, Robert Lee Baptist Church Robert Lee, Texas and had been Associate Pastor at Cherry Road Baptist Memphis, Tennessee. He is survived by his wife Pamela Messer and sons Matthew and Timothy of Memphis, Tennessee; parents Buddy and Rose Messer of Canyon, Texas; three brothers, Jeff Messer of Amarillo, Texas, Doug Messer of Amarillo, Texas and Randy Messer of Oak Grove, Missouri and one sister Janice Hughes of Canyon, Texas. Waide was also survived by a loving host of in-laws, nieces and nephews, and many friends.

Robert Joe Guerrero of Comanche, formerly of Coleman, died Friday, February 23, 2007 in Comanche. Rosary Services will be at 7:00pm Sunday at the Walker Funeral Home Chapel. Mass funeral services will be at 10:30am Monday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Rev. Father Santiago will officiate with burial in Coleman City Cemetery. He was born November 1, 1959 in Coleman, son of the late Juan and Concepcion Guerrero. Robert had lived in Coleman from birth until 2002 at which time he moved to Comanche. He worked at Stempel and Wind Clean while living in Coleman. After moving to Comanche, he started working at Kohler in Brownwood. Survivors include: 2 brothers - Juan Guerrero Jr. of Abilene and Rudy Guerrero of Comanche; five sisters - Susie DeLeon and Olga Guerrero of Coleman, Silvia DeLeon and Mary Capuchen of Santa Anna and Oralia Lewis of Talpa; 15 nephews and nieces, five great-nephews and nieces.

Mamie Love Evans died Monday, February 19, 2007 at Holiday Hill Nursing Home. Funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 23, 2007 at First United Methodist Church with Dr. Jeff Miller officiating. Burial will follow in the Coleman City Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home. Mamie Love Evans was born February 23, 1905 in Coleman County, Texas, a daughter of Lucien Clay Love and Nellie Gray Tweedle Love. She grew up in Coleman, graduated from Coleman High School and attended Southern Methodist University where she studied art and music. On October 6, 1928 she married Lamar Evans in Coleman and he preceded her in death in 1968. During their marriage they lived in Washington, D.C., St. Paul Minnesota, and Dallas, Texas before returning to Coleman. Mamie was a member of First United Methodist Church where she served many years as Librarian, Sunday School Kindergarten teacher. She was a member of Bettie Morris Circle, member of the Eastern Star, UMW and Friends of the Library. She is survived by several nephews, including Lucien Love of Coleman, Bob Craig of Highlands, Bill Shaw of San Angelo; several nieces including Jane Love Hitt of Tulsa, Mari Anne Craig of Ingram, Ann Blair Charlesworth of Burleson, Marilyn Craig of Highlands, Mary Eckert of Mason. Memorials may be made to the donor's favorite charity. Family visitation will be held Thursday, February 22 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home.

Macelle T. Williams of Santa Anna, Texas passed away Monday, February 19, 2007 at 8:05 pm at the Coleman County Medical Center. Graveside services will be Friday at 2:00 PM at the Santa Anna Cemetery Pavilion with Rev. Bruce Hess officiating, under the direction of Henderson Funeral Home of Santa Anna. The family will receive friends Thursday from 5 till 7 PM at Henderson Funeral Home. Macelle was born June 29, 1918 in Sumner, Mississippi to the late Thomas Azmond and Peralee Hope Teer. She was raised in Mississippi where she graduated from the Pope Schools. On May 24, 1937 Macelle married David Aylmer Williams in Water Valley, Mississippi and they celebrated celebrated 42 years of marriage. David preceded her in death in 1979. Macelle was a resident of Santa Anna since 1996 moving here from New Mexico. She was a member of the Baptist Church and a retired sales person with Sears Roebuck retiring in 1979 and had been employed with Bloomfield Schools in New Mexico as a special ed aide. Survivors - 3 Daughters - Kay Johnson of Santa Anna, Texas, Pat Morris of Santa Anna, Texas, Dai Long of Dawson, Texas; Son - David Williams of Aztec, New Mexico; 8 Grandchildren; 14 Great Grandchildren.

Samuel Charlie Jones of Coleman died Monday, February 19, 2007 at Shannon Medical Center in San Angelo. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, February 22, 2007 at Stevens Funeral Home with Sam Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in the Shields Cemetery, under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home. Sam was born January 31, 1922 in Santa Anna, Texas, the son of Charlie H. and Annie C. Elliott Jones. He grew up in Mozelle and attended school in Mozelle and Rockwood. He married Mildred Mae Eppler on February 15, 1940 in Coleman. She preceded him in death on July 26, 2001. He worked in the oil field as a pumper and truck driver in McCamey and Kermit before moving back to Coleman in 1980. He attended the Hillcrest Church of Christ. Sam is survived by his children, Wanda L. Whitton of Kermit, Kenneth M. Jones of Pagosa Springs, Colorado; Brenda Ainsworth of Odessa, Cindie Preston of Odessa; nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, one daughter, Patsy Stack, three sisters and two grandsons. Family visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Charles Ainsworth, Michael Preston, Kory Jones, Travis Corbell, Daniel Sluder, Wanda Byrd, Shane Birkla and Lewis Elliott. Honorary pallbearer will be Bobby Elliott.

Billie Marie Miller of Coleman died Monday, February 19, 2007 at Coleman County Medical Center. Funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 21, 2007 at First United Methodist Church with Dr. Jeff Miller officiating. Burial will follow in the Coleman City Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home. Billie Marie Miller was born January 9, 1923 on the Rafter 3 Ranch in Coleman County, Texas, a daughter of J. P. "Jake" Miller, Sr. and Mary J. Jameson Miller. She grew up on the ranch, attended school in Coleman, graduating from Coleman High School in 1940. Billie Marie was the first Rodeo Queen for the Coleman Rodeo in 1937 and again in 1939. She attended Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri and Texas Tech University. On September 20, 1942 she married William H. "Bill" Miller in Coleman and he preceded her in death on March 3, 1987. Billie Marie and Bill moved to Rapid City, S.D. in 1947 where they ranched until 1986, when they returned to Coleman. While living in South Dakota, Billie Marie was a rancher, a homemaker, worked in Occupational Therapy and was an active member of First Baptist Church. After returning to Coleman, she was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she sang in the Chancel Choir. She was also a member of the Coleman County Water Board, Garden Club where she served as president and Cattlewomen's Association, also serving as president. She is survived by three daughters, Marie Miller of Coleman, Ann Miller of Apache Junction, Arizona and Julie Miller Shaw and husband Dave of Colorado Springs, Colorado; one sister, Ann Miller Hargett and husband James of Coleman; five grandchildren, Jason Best, Sara Best Gonzales, Callie Best, James Shaw, John Shaw; two great-grandchildren, Daniel Joseph Shaw and Connor James Shaw; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son, William H. Miller II and a brother, J. P. "Bub" Miller. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church Chancel Choir, P. O. Box 852, Coleman, Texas 76834. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home.

Edith Odell Toombs

Edith Toombs died February 16, 2007. She was preceded in death by her parents and four sisters. She is survived by eight nieces and nephews, eighteen great nieces and nephews and numerous great-great nieces and nephews. Edith was born in Rising Star, Texas on Nov. 15, 1910, to Arthur Lee Toombs and Elizabeth Josephine (Goss) Toombs. She began her teaching career at the age of 18 and taught in several small schools in central Texas. A firm believer in the importance of education, she held a B.A. degree from Sul Ross State College with a triple major in English, Spanish and Education and a minor in music. She earned a Master's Degree in English from the University of Texas with a triple minor in Spanish, music and education. During World War II she worked for two years as a translator (from Spanish to English) at the Laredo International Bridge. After the war ended she worked for two years as a laboratory technician for a petroleum company based in Corpus Christi. When Laredo Junior College was organized in 1947, she was hired as an English professor. She retired 28 years later in 1975. She served as head of the English Dept. for 24 years or those 28 years. She was held in high esteem by her colleagues and students and remembered as 'cool, calm, efficient and consistent'. 'She had a very sharp mind' said one student, and 'she knows more about your abilities than you do', said another. She was named LJC's Teacher of the Year for five consecutive years in the 1960's. In addition to her teaching and administrative duties she sponsored the college newspaper for many years and was sponsor of the Phi Theta Kappa college fraternity for more than 20 years. Reflecting on her career she is quoted as saying, 'The biggest reward in teaching, I believe is the contact with the students. They keep you young. I feel that I've done a service. I've done a job that is worth doing'. Ms. Joe Rutherford Grant died Saturday, February 17, 2007 in DeSoto, Texas. Funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 20 at First Baptist Church in Coleman with Rev. John Stanislaw officiating. Burial will follow in the Santa Anna Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home. She was born February 6, 1914 in Whon, Coleman County, Texas, a daughter of Sam and Addie Parolee Rutherford. She grew up in Whon, attended school there and graduated from Rockwood High School. She was married to Ellie "Sam" Grant on April 13,1933 and he preceded her in death. Joe retired after working for a number of years as a secretary at First Coleman National Bank. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Coleman and the Eastern Star. She moved to DeSoto several years ago to be near her children. Survivors include two sons, Gene Rice and Kenneth Grant both of Duncanville, Texas; five grandchildren, Belinda Rice Horton, Mickey Rice, Scott Rice, Michelle Grant, Raymond Grant; 9 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; nieces, nephews and cousins. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Building Fund, Coleman, Texas. Family visitation will be held on Monday from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home.

Guy A Whisenant, 86

Guy A. Whisenant of Brownwood formerly of Rockwood, Texas passed away Tuesday, February 13, 2007 at 7:50 AM at the Brownwood Regional Medical Center. Graveside services will be Friday at 2:00 PM at the Rockwood Cemetery with Rev. Jeff Dean officiating under the direction of Henderson Funeral Home of Santa Anna. Guy was born July 25, 1920 in Burke Co. North Carolina to the late Eli Morrison and Lucinda Whisenant. He was raised in North Carolina where he graduated from school. Guy served his country in the U. S. Army and Air Force during World War II. He retired in 1982 from North American Aircraft & Rockwell International and had been a resident of Coleman County since 1992. On December 25, 1993 Guy married Dorothea Longenecker in Brownwood and they celebrated ten years of marriage. Dorothea preceded him in death in 2004. Guy was a member of the Nazarene Church. Survivors: Daughter - Patricia Lambert of Florida; Son - Guy Andrew Whisenant, Jr. of North Carolina; 5 Grandchildren.

John L. Watson age 86 of Coleman, Texas passed away Monday, February 12, 2007 at 11:20 PM at the Coleman County Medical Center. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 5:30 till 7:00 PM at Henderson Funeral Home. Services will be Thursday at 2:00 PM at Henderson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. John Stanislaw officiating. Interment will follow at the Coleman City Cemetery under the direction of Henderson Funeral Home of Coleman. John was born on January 14, 1921 in Lawn, Texas to the late Luscious Marshall & Mollie Edna Hunt Watson. He was raised in Lawn where he attended schools moving to Coleman where he resided for 35 years. On June 10, 1949 John married Wilma Irene Dobbins in Brownwood and they celebrated fifty five years of marriage. Wilma preceded him in death in 2004. John served his country as a corporal in the U. S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the Baptist Church and a retired Trucker. Survivors include: 4 Daughters: Brenda & husband Gary Benson of Coleman, Texas, Pam Searcy of Coleman, Texas, Karen & husband Charley Van Pelt of Coleman, Texas and Gina & husband Mark Bruner of Sweetwater, Texas; 2 Sons: Jim & wife Raylene Watson of Coleman, Texas and Randy & Amanda Watson of Brownwood, Texas; 16 Grandchildren, 16 Great Grandchildren; and Numerous Nieces and Nephews. John was preceded in death by 6 Sisters & 1 Brother.

Josh "Trebark" Weaver, 30

Josh "Trebark" Weaver of Brownwood, passed away Saturday in Coleman. He was born September 21, 1976 in Odessa to Carolyn (Thomson) Weaver. Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm Wednesday, February 14, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel in Odessa with Rev. Dwayne Dunwoody officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Survivors include: his parents - Carolyn Weaver of Odessa, Mark Weaver of Rogers, Arkansas; grandmother - Rowena Byrd of Odessa; aunt and uncle - Rip and Margaret Thornburg; cousins - Brandon and Tanner Thornburg all of Stephenville; his true friend - Michael Reyenga of Odessa and especially his loyal companion, Chex. Trebark was truly an old time cowboy in today's world. Shooooot Yea!! He was that kind of guy. In support of Josh's love for children, the family requests memorials be made to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Claud Smith, son of the late Roy and Josephine Smith, died Monday, February 12, 2007 in Goldsboro. Funeral services will be at 2:00pm Wednesday, February 14, at Walker Funeral Home with Masonic Graveside Services to follow at Midway Cemetery. Memorials can be made to Hospice of the Big Country, 4601 Hartford, Abilene, Texas 79605. He was born January 25, 1921 west of Goldsboro. He had lived west of Goldsboro all of his life. He graduated from Content High School in 1939. He married Madaline Bruce in Winters on August 3, 1940. He joined the Masonic Lodge in 1944 and was a member of the Scottish Rite 32nd Degree and of Shriners. He was a self-employed stock farmer. Survivors include: his wife - Madaline and son, both of Goldsboro; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Glenn Thomas of Coleman, died Wednesday, March 21, 2007 at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene. Funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, March 23 in Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Baker Rudolph and John Walthall officiating. Burial will follow in the Coleman City Cemetery with graveside rites conducted by Rev. John Stanislaw. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home. Glenn Thomas was born December 19, 1930 in Coleman, Texas, the son of Clyde Gordon Thomas and Bessie Bailey Thomas. He grew up and attended school in Coleman. He served in the United States Air Force for four years and was in Korea during the Korean Conflict. On June 18, 1955 he married Wanell McClellan in Coleman. He and his father owned and operated a seed and feed business in Coleman. For 25 years Glenn Thomas served as the County Clerk for Coleman County, retiring in 1994. He had previously served on the Coleman Volunteer Fire Department, Coleman Noon Lions Club, Coleman Chamber of Commerce and the Board of Directors of Overall-Morris Memorial Hospital. He was a member of First Baptist Church and the Men's Downtown Sunday School Class. Glenn enjoyed his coffee drinking buddies, his grandchildren and playing "42." Survivors include his wife, Wanell Thomas of Coleman; three sons, Jerry and wife Annie Thomas of Midland, Gary and wife Donna Thomas of McKinney, Mike and wife Cyndi Thomas of Forney; three grandsons, Garrett and wife Juliana Thomas of Wylie, Jarrad Thomas of Provo, Utah, Luke Thomas of McKinney; two granddaughters, Brittany and Kyndra Thomas both of Forney; great-grandson, Garrison Thomas of Wylie; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Nell Hamilton and Linda Sue Sparks.. Pallbearers will be Garrett Thomas, Jarrad Thomas, Luke Thomas, Brittany Thomas, Kyndra Thomas, Juliana Thomas, Mac Anderson. Honorary pallbearers will be Members of the Men's Downtown Sunday School Class, Barney Ransberger, Bill Bradshaw, W. H. Gorman. Family visitation will be held on Thursday from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to the donor's favorite charity.

J.D. Gorman Jr., son of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Dugan Sr. and Opal Gorman, was born January 9, 1936 in Novice and passed away at the Laredo Medical Center in Laredo. Funeral services will be at 2:30pm Friday, March 23, in the Walker Funeral Home Chapel with the Texas Parks and Wildlife as Color Guard and Alvin McMeans officiating. Burial will follow at Rough Creek Cemetery at Novice. Family visitation will be from 6:00pm to 8:00pm Thursday, March 22, at Walker Funeral Home. J.D. was a graduate of Novice High School in 1954. He married Darlene Fay Gayler in Coleman June 14, 1955. He was a member of the 36th Division National Guard of Coleman for 8 years. They moved to Zapata, Texas 44 years ago and had retired from the Texas Parks and Wildlife as a Game Warden for 36 years. He was a member of the Baptist church. Survivors include: his wife - Darlene Gorman of Zapata; two daughters - Gay Fay Oxford of Lytle, Texas and Joy Lynn and son-in-law David Oxford of Germany; one sister - June Rogers; 6 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren. Memorials can be made to the American Cancer Society.

Haskell Clevenger of Fisk, Texas passed away Sunday, March 18, 2007 at 12:48 PM at the Coleman County Medical Center. Services will be at 2:30pm Wednesday at Henderson Funeral Chapel in Coleman with Joe Hailey officiating. Interment will follow at the Brown Ranch Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00pm to 7:00pm Tuesday at Henderson Funeral Home of Coleman. Haskell was born February 10, 1920 in Taylor County, Texas to the late Author Earnest and Dovie A. Elkins Clevenger. He was raised in Coleman County attending the Cotton School on Morris Ranch. Haskell served his country during World War II with the Army, Co. B, 142 infantry, 36th division. On May 19, 1945 he married Lena Smith in Coleman and they celebrated fifty-one years of marriage. Haskell was a member of the Church of God and the DAV. He retired in 1984 as a drilling consultant. Survivors include: Wife - Lena Clevenger of Fisk; Daughter - Lorna Clevenger of Berlin, Germany; 2 Sons - Fred Clevenger of Kissimmee, Florida; Gary Clevenger of Wichita Falls, Texas; 3 Sisters - Paulene Ferguson of Granbury; Maggie Hayes of Phoenix, Arizona; Bettie Culps of San Angelo, Texas; 4 Grandchildren - Tanya Clevenger, Lena Clevenger, Amanda Clevenger and Travis Clevenger; Several Nieces and Nephews. Haskell was preceded in death by 1 Sister and 2 Brothers.

David Ray Croft, 60

David Ray Croft passed away March 9, 2007 at his home in Oceanside, California. No services were held. His body was cremated. David Croft was born January 22, 1947 in Coleman to Roy E. and Dorothy (Bennett) Croft. He graduated from Coleman High School in 1965. He traveled the United States, as he loved the outdoors. He worked as an electronics technician for the Xerox Corporation in Chicago, Illinois from 1966 to 1975, with an interlude in the Army from 1967 to 1969, serving in Viet Nam, mainly in Saigon, Pleiku, Da Nang, and various locations of the Central Highlands. After leaving Xerox, he drove trucks from Dallas to Houston, started carpentry businesses in Chicago and Austin, worked on pipelines in Georgia, the Carolinas and Texas. After returning to Coleman for a year, David moved to northern California. There he prospected for gold and even wrote a book on gold prospecting. In recent years, he obtained water rights for generating electrical power in northern California. Survivors include his wife Ellen of Oceanside, California; mother Dorothy (Mrs. R. E.) Freeman of Port Aransas; one sister Kay (Mrs. Richard) Straach of Port Aransas, one son, Adam of Illinois, a step-daughter, Alix of California, three nieces; two aunts, Sue Myers and Hazel Wolf of Coleman; and many cousins.

Voncile Thomason, 82

Voncile Thomason entered the arms of her heavenly Father, Saturday, March 17, 2007 at Sagecrest Alzheimer's Care Center in San Angelo. Services celebrating Voncile's life will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 20 in Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Kermit Sorrells officiating. Burial will follow in the Voss Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home, Coleman. Voncile was born June 13, 1924 in Voss, Texas, daughter of the late Percy and Beulah Loggins Strickland. She grew up in Voss and attended school at Voss and Mozelle. On April 1, 1940 she married Roland K. Thomason in Coleman. They were strong partners who worked side-by-side in all endeavors. Upon the incapacitation of Roland in 1975 and her son's death in 1977, Voncile continued to successfully manage their farm and ranch operations. For over 25 years she was a member of the Sheep and Goat Raisers Association and was appointed a Director in 1992 and an Honorary Director for Life in 1999. She was a life-long resident of Coleman County, living northwest of Voss until 1945, then moving three miles west of Mozelle. She lived at her home place until entering Sagecrest in San Angelo in February 2006. Voncile Thomason was a strong, determined, Christian woman who will be remembered for her courage, strength, faith and love. She will live on in our hearts. Survivors include three daughters, Wyvonne Autrey of Katy, Texas, Charlotte and husband Gerald Dawson of Mansfield, Texas, Charlene and husband Jack Self of San Angelo; two brothers, Arch Strickland of Gouldbusk and Guinn Strickland of Fort Worth; four grandchildren, David Autrey, Paula Autrey Vick, Todd Dawson and Tenille Thomason Metzler; eight great-grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; daughter-in-law, Tammy Crowder. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Roland K. Thomason on July 6, 1986 and son, Keith Thomason in November 1977; two brothers, Cecil Strickland and Wayne Strickland; two sisters, Mabel Blanton and Reta Grusendorf; son-in-law, Dean Soderberg. Family visitation will be held Monday from 7:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the donor's favorite charity. Niece and nephews serving as pallbearers will be S. E. Blanton, Debra Keisling, Michael Nichols, Charles Nichols, Monty Strickland, Cliff Strickland. Honorary pallbearers will be Henry Reyes, Salvadore Reyes, Little Henry Reyes. The family sends its deepest appreciation to the staff of Sagecrest and Baptist Memorials Hospice for the loving and professional care our 'Can Do Woman' received day in day out while a resident at Sagecrest.
