Paul Schuyler Gingrich
Paul Schuyler Gingrich passed away Sept. 29, 2002, in Seguin. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, at First United Methodist Church in Seguin with the Rev. Lonnie Phillips and the Rev. Linda Montgomery officiating. Mr. Gingrich is survived by: his wife, Meg Gingrich; sons, Jack Edward Gingrich, David Terry Gingrich and Brian Paul Gingrich; father, Jack Edward Gingrich; sister Sandra Hollamon and aunt Alvia Lohoff. Richard Magness Kirkpatrick
Richard Magness Kirkpatrick, 63, of Copperas Cove, passed away Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002. He was born Sept. 3, 1939, in Honey Grove, Texas. He graduated from high school in Rockdale, Texas, and served four years in the United States Navy, including an 18-month tour of duty in Japan as a Russian language translator. Richard earned a Bachelor of Arts in Russian literature and language from the University of Texas, a Master of Education in educational administration and supervision from Our Lady of the Lake College in San Antonio and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Texas. His life’s work was dedicated to the children of Texas through his career in public school education. His career began as a teacher and coach at Thomas Jefferson High School in San Antonio, where he also served as Director of Personnel for the San Antonio Independent School District. He served as Super-intendent of Schools in Seguin from 1977-1981 and as Superintendent of Schools in Copperas Cove from 1981-1994. Following his retirement, he worked as an educational consultant as director of member services at the Equity Center in Austin. Richard was the founding president of the Equity Center, a coalition of poor school districts that lobbied successfully for the passage of the finance article of HB 72, and he held that position from 1982-1985. He was also co-chairman of the Equity Center legislative committee. Other highlights of his career include serving as chairman of the sub-committee on school finance for Ross Perot’s school finance committee and serving a two-year term on Lt. Gov. Bob Bullock’s Texas Committee on Student Learning. He was invited to many educational service centers, school districts and other educational organizations at the state and national levels to serve as consultant or presenter on both instructional strategies and school finance. Richard received many awards and honors throughout his career, including: being selected as Regional Superintendent of the Year by the Texas Association of School Boards in 1986; selected as Outstanding Admin-istrator of the Year in 1984 by the Texas Association of Journalism Directors; was honored by the Pink, Pink Rose for Outstanding Contribution to Edu-cation in 1988; received the Lamar Alexander Award of Excellence in 1988; was selected Educator of the Month by Texas School Business magazine in June, 1994; received the Outstanding Civilian Service Medal from the Commanding General of Fort Hood, Paul Funk, in August of 1994; and received the Equity Center Award in 2002 for his lifetime of service to the children of Texas. He was also active in his community, having served on the Boards of Directors of the Rotary Clubs and the United Way both in Seguin and Copperas Cove, and the Boards of Directors of the Chamber of Commerce and the Industrial Foundation of Copperas Cove. He received the Coryell County Child Welfare Board’s Friend of Children award in 1990. He also served on the Board of Trustees of Central Texas College. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. Survivors include: his wife, Etta Kay Kirkpatrick of Copperas Cove; two sons, Richard Charles Kirkpatrick of Copperas Cove and Sean Spencer Kirkpatrick of Austin; his mother, Lorene Jones of Pearland; brother, Billy Jack Kirkpatrick of Pearland; granddaughter, Kaylyn Lauryl Kirkpatrick of Copperas Cove; and grandson, Richard Charles Kirkpatrick II of Copperas Cove. His father, General Richard Kirkpatrick, preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 2, at Grace United Methodist Church in Copperas Cove. Edna Emma Frieda Marckwardt Gembler, 93, passed away Saturday evening, Sept. 21, 2002. Edna was born July 9, 1909, in San Antonio, Texas. She is preceded in death by: her parents, Otto and Katy Kreitz Marckwardt; husband, Edwin L. Gembler; and son, William Gembler. Survivors include children, Katherine Gembler Reeh, Eddie Mae Gembler Mann, Andrew C. Gembler, Betty Gembler Tenney and Larry A. Soila “Rosa” Caballero, 50, of Seguin, died Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2002. Rev. Clifton J. Freudenberg
The Reverend Clifton J. Freudenberg passed away September 18, 2002, in Seguin. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m., Sunday Sept. 22, 2002, at Cross United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Alan Coe officiating. Interment will follow in Guadalupe Valley Memorial Park. Visitation was held from noon to 9 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 21, with family receiving friends from 5-7 p.m. The Rev. Freudenberg was born November 5, 1922, in Bexar County to Edmund and Edna Jenke Freudenberg. He graduated from Brackenridge High School in 1941, attended Trinity University in San Antonio, graduating in 1947, and received his Master of Divinity from Eden Theological Seminary in St. Louis in 1950. From 1950-1961 he served as a minister in Orange Grove/Tynan Area. Later he served from 1961-1988 at Cross United Church of Christ, becoming Pastor Emeritus. In retirement, he ministered at St. Johns United Church of Christ in Uhland for eight years. He was a member of Seguin Kiwanis Club, where he served as District Lieutenant Governor, and was a member of the Guadalupe Valley Ministerial Association. He was active in Boy Scouts where he was awarded the Silver Beaver. In 1967, he was associated with the World Boy Scout Jamboree and later in 1969, the National Boy Scout Jamboree. He was active in Bexar County Rural School reunions. He was an avid hunter, fisher, traveler and enjoyed the history of the Old West and Indians. Clifton is survived by his wife of 55 years, Gladys Freudenberg of Seguin; children, Barbara Koehler and husband Steve of Seguin, Paul H. Freudenberg and wife Cindy of Seguin and Amy Stodghill and husband Lance of Houston; grandchildren, Alison Koehler, Reagan and Ryan Freudenberg and Luke Stodghill; and sister, Ora Mae Alderman of San Antonio. Ima Gene Dikes Broadway
Ima Gene Dikes Broadway, 82, of Canyon Lake, Texas, passed away Sept. 19, 2002, at her home. Mrs. Broadway was born Apr. 6, 1920, in DeKalb, Texas, to Oscar and Johnnie Wilson. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, two sisters and her husband of 45 years, Earl Benbow Dikes. Mrs. Broadway was always active in her church, First Assembly of God and later, Church of the Wildwood at Canyon Lake. She taught Sunday school and was an officer in the Women’s Ministries Department. Survivors include her husband, M. L. Curtis E. Bolin
Curtis E. Bolin, 76, of Seguin; formerly of Springfield, Illinois, died Sept. 19, 2002. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, September 21, 2002, in Goetz Memorial Chapel with the Rev. George Schultz officiating. Interment will follow in Kingsbury Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to funeral services. Curtis was born July 24, 1926, in Leona Mines, Virginia. He was a maintenance worker for the Illinois State Journal Register for 38 years. He worked very hard taking care of his family; he volunteered at several places at times during his life. He never gave advice unless he was asked for it and he loved country music and we loved hearing him play his guitar and banjo. He had a big heart and would have fed all the hungry people in the world if he could have. He believed in God and tried to live a Christian life. Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Irene M. Bolin of Seguin; daughter, Melinda McCulloch and husband Douglas of Seguin; four sons, Edward Duffey of Doniphan, Mo., Paul Duffey and wife Barbara of Pittsfield, Ill., Richard Duffey of Springfield, Ill. and James Bolin of Springfield, Ill.; 16 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Helen Marie Craft
Helen Marie Craft, 72, of Seguin, died Sept. 16, 2002. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, Sept. 23, 2002, in Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery. Mrs. Craft was born Dec. 14, 1929, in Curry County, New Mexico, to Delmar and Marie (Hayter) Green. On March 8, 1946, she married Hobart L. Craft in Anniston, Alabama. Hobart and Helen moved to Seguin in 1958. Helen attended New Braunfels Nursing School and graduated in 1972, as an L.V.N. She worked at a medical clinic in San Antonio until her retirement in 1994. Survivors include her husband, Hobart L. Craft of Seguin; mother, Marie Green of Seguin; sons, J. L. Craft of Austin and Jack Craft of Raleigh, N. H. A. “Blondie” Tausch
H. A. “Blondie” Tausch, 91, of Seguin, beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather, went to be with the Lord on Sept. 16, 2002. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 19, 2002, at Cross United Church of Christ in Seguin, with the Rev. Alan Coe officiating. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2002, at Goetz Funeral Home, with the family receiving friends from 5-7 p.m. A long-time resident of Seguin, Blondie owned City Auto Service and was to date, the oldest honorary member of the Seguin Volunteer Fire Department, where he once served as Chief of Fire Police. A member of Hermann Sons Lodge, Lions Club and Cross United Church of Christ, Blondie's 91 years were filled with his joy in hunting and fishing alongside close friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Hilda Adams Tausch. He is survived by daughter, Nancy Wiederstein and husband Erwin of San Antonio; son, Larry Tausch of Fulton; grandchildren, Christie Hill and husband Bob of Columbia, S. C., Trey Wiederstein and wife Michelle of San Antonio, Todd Wiederstein of Houston and Summer Dawn Tausch of Fulton; great-grandchildren, Alex and Austin Hill, Jordan and Trevor Wiederstein; and sisters, Olga Heitkamp and Lorrine Praesel both of Waco. Dr. Edward Herman Zunker
Dr. Edward Herman Zunker, 80, passed away at his home on Sept. 16, 2002. He was born July 13, 1922, in Seguin, Texas, the son of Louis and Nelda Zunker. He graduated from Seguin High School in 1940, where he excelled in all sports. At 15, he was the youngest player ever for the Seguin White Sox and was elected into the Hall of Fame of the South Texas Baseball League. In 1996, he was inducted into the Seguin Independent School District Athletic Hall of Honor. Ed attended Texas Lutheran College, lettering in football and basketball and playing two years of baseball for the University of Texas. World War II interrupted his college career and he served in the Navy for four years. Ed married his longtime classmate and sweetheart, Adeline Schraub. In 1949, he graduated with a Doctor of Optometry degree from the Southern College of Optometry in Tennessee. Ed practiced optometry in Seguin for 34 years and served as president of the Texas Optometric Association. In 1985, he was elected Optometrist of the Year in Texas. He was elected and served on the Seguin City Council for several terms and was appointed to the Texas Board of Health for a six-year term. He was active in Emanuel’s Lutheran Church, serving as president of the Church Council. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Adeline; his daughters, Jill Krohn and her husband, Dr. Tom Krohn, of Seguin, and Kay Zunker of Seguin; three granddaughters, Dr. Kim Albracht, Kara Huesser and Kelli Krohn; one great-grandson, Nicholas Edward Albracht; and one brother, Dr. Vernon Zunker of San Antonio. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers Louis Nelson Zunker and Harry Lee Zunker. A private family memorial service was held at Edward’s home. Memorials contributions may be made to Hospice of Guadalupe Valley Hospital, Friends of the Library or a charity of one’s choice.
