Lazenby, Artie West

CALL – Funeral for Artie West Lazenby, 80, will be at 10 a.m. today in Causey’s E.E. Stringer Funeral Home in Kirbyville with burial in Kirbyville Cemetery. Mrs. Lazenby died at 6:25 p.m. Sunday in Newton County Hospital. She was a lifelong resident of Newton County. Survivors include one daughter, Wyndell Holmes of Call; two sons, Escar E. Grissom of Houston and Cecil Lazenby of Call, one sister, Ludie Weaver and a brother, Everett West, both of Kirbyville.

Lazenby, Dr. C. Spurgeon
Funeral services for Dr. C. Spurgeon Lazenby, 87, of Kirbyville will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the Kirbyville First Baptist Church with the Rev. Jimmy Burks, pastor of the Amelia Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Kirbyville City Cemetery under the direction of Causey's E.E. Stringer Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be C.B. Herndon, B.C. Woods, Ed Bradley, Joe and Charles Lazenby and Tommy Bean. Dr. Lazenby died at 5 a.m. Saturday, October 9, 1971 in the Baptist Hospital in Beaumont after an illness of several months. A widely known dentist, he was born in Emilee in Tyler County. He received his doctorate of dentistry in Atlanta, Ga. In 1910. He practiced in Jasper for one year and in Kirbyville 59 years. He was a 50-year member of the Nathan Corley Masonic Lodge and a member of the First Baptist Church and a charter member of the Kirbyville Lions Club. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Fannie Ogden Lazenby of Beaumont; one sister, Miss Mabel Lazenby of Jasper; one brother, J.B. Lazenby of the Trout Creek Community; three grandchildren and Six great-grandchildren.

Lazenby, Carl
Carl Lazenby, 73, of Houston died Wednesday, April 24, 1984 at Pasadena Bayshore Hospital in Pasadena after an illness. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Causey’s E.E. Stringer Funeral Home in Kirbyville with burial in Kirbyville Cemetery. A native of Jasper, he lived in Kirbyville most of his life before moving to Houston and was former owner of Lazenby Dry Cleaning Service in Kirbyville. Survivors include his wife, Mabel Payne Lazenby of Houston; two sons, Charles Lazenby of Port Arthur and Joe C. Lazenby Jr. of Houston; a daughter, Sarah Bean of Vidor; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Funeral services for Jesse Benjamin Lazenby, 87, of Call, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Causey’s E.E. Stringer Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Kirbyville Cemetery. Lazenby died Saturday in a Newton hospital. Among survivors are his wife, Mrs. Artie West Lazenby; a son, Cecil Lazenby, Call; a stepson, Escar Grissom, Houston; a daughter, Mrs. Jack Holmes, Call; and a sister, Miss Mabel Lazenby, Jasper.

Lazenby, Sarah Frances Ogden
KIRBYVILLE – Sarah Frances Ogden Lazenby, 87, died at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 6, 1974 after a lengthy illness. Funeral services are pending at Causey’s E.E. Stringer Funeral Home. She was the widow of the late Dr. C.S. Lazenby. Survivors include one son, Carl Lazenby of Vidor.

Lea, Roy G.
Funeral services for Roy G. Lea, 59, of Kirbyville was held Friday at Causey’s E.E. Stringer Funeral Home with Paul Bailey, Church of Christ minister, officiating. Interment was in Kirbyville Cemetery. Pallbearers were J.B. Sanders, B.C. Woods, James Bateman, Jeptha Stark, C.B. Herndon and O.L. Smith. Mr. Lea died at his home at 9:45 p.m. Wednesday, August 1, 1979 after a sudden illness. He was a native of Simpson, La., and was reared by his aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. R.J. Cooper, after the death of his parents. He owned and operated the Cooper or Lea Cafe for 26 years. He was presently employed at the Texaco Security Guard. He was a veteran with five years service during World War II. He is survived by his wife, Beulah Prevost Lea of Kirbyville; two daughters, Sherry Matthews of Lumberton and Maggie Accord of Kirbyville; two sons, Robert G. Lea and James Lea, both of Kirbyville; two sisters, Ferrelle Rischard of Kirbyville and Theda Walters of Port Neches; a brother, Weldon Cooper of Charlottesville, Va.; and five grandchildren.

Annie Westbrook Leblanc, 90, known to many as "Sugar LeBlanc" died Monday, Feb. 18, at Jasper Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, at E. E. Stringer Funeral Home in Kirbyville with burial at Kirbyville Cemetery. Born Aug. 18, 1911 in Magnolia Springs, Texas to Lettie and Jarvis Westbrook, she had lived most of her life in Kirbyville and had recently moved to Jasper. Survivors include daughters, Ollie Brookfield of Jasper and Joann Enen of Wichita, Kan.; 7 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren. Funeral services for E.B. Lee, 58, were held Wednesday, April 28, in the First Baptist Church in Buna. Interment was in Antioch Cemetery with Masonic graveside rites. Causey's E.E. Stringer Funeral Home of Buna was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Lee died at 1:00 p.m. Monday, April 26, in Silsbee Convalescent Center following a long illness. He was a native of Magnolia Springs. He had lived in Buna most of his life. He was produce manager of Pearson Discount in Kirbyville. He is survived by his wife, Hazel Adams Lee; two sons, Brady Lee of Harrisonville, Va. and Dale Lee of Lumberton; three stepsons, Medford and Jerry Webb, both of Houston, and Robert Webb of Buna; two stepdaughters, Marion McWhorter and Sandra Hester, both of Buna; two sisters, Erma Hinson of Silsbee and Earnestine Tanton of Evadale; and two brothers, Clarence Lee of Buna and Tom Lee of Beaumont.

She had worked for Sam Houston Elementary School cafeteria with 18 years service. Survivors include her husband, William B. Lee of Port Arthur; her parents, W.E. and Winnie Smith of Kirbyville; three sons, William, Paul and Charles Lee, all of Port Arthur; two daughters, JoAnna Whitten and Stella Sulsar, both of Port Arthur; a brother, William H. Smith of Buna; three sisters, Stella Moore and Evelyn McAdams, both of Kirbyville, and Mary Wilshire of Jasper; and six grandchildren.

Brother Jack Lee, 80, of Jasper died at 12:30 a.m. Tuesday at Jasper Memorial Hospital. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Weeks Chapel Church near Jasper with burial in Weeks Chapel Cemetery under the direction of J.O. Stringer and Griffin Funeral Home. A native of Brookeland, he was a lifelong resident of Newton County and served as a Baptist Minister for more than 50 years. Survivors include his wife, Wilma Lee of Jasper; a son, Michael Lee of Jasper; and three daughters, Philis Ann Robinson, Helen Hoagland and Patricia Gale Lee, all of Jasper.

He died about 2 a.m. Thursday at his home. A native of Panola County, he had lived here 38 years and was a retired sawmill worker. He was a member of the Beckville Masonic Lodge 922 AF&AM. Survivors include his wife, Lazelle Kirk Langley; two sons, Jack Langley of Buna and Scott Langley of Port Arthur; one daughter, Alice Hoosier of Call; three sisters, Phoebe Emmerson of Beckville, Jo May Cox and Ouida Burse of California.

Burial will follow in Jasper City Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 4:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M. Friday at Stringer & Griffin Funeral Home in Jasper. Mrs. Lanier died Wednesday January 2, 2002 at Dickerson Memorial Hospital in Jasper. Mrs. Lanier was born March 1, 1908 in Browndell, Texas and was a lifelong resident of Jasper. She retired as a longtime SouthEast Texas Court Reporter. A Charter Member of the Pilot Club of Jasper, Inc. and member of the National Shorthand Reporters Association. She was a member of The First United Methodist Church where she served as a Sunday School Teacher, Secretary of the Board of Trustees, Secretary of the Executive Board, etc. and was an Honorary Member of the Board of The First United Methodist Church at the time of her death. Survivors include her daughter, Laura Jane Lanier Buckmaster and husband Billy of Jasper. Three grandchildren: William Matthew Buckmaster, George Lanier Buckmaster and Rachel Ann Buckmaster; and brother, John Lee Allen, Jr. She was predeceased in death by her husband of 59 years, George Lanier and a grandson John Michael Buckmaster. Services are under the direction of Stringer & Griffin Funeral Home of Jasper.

A native of Shelbyville, she lived in Kountze 15 years and was a homemaker. Survivors include daughters, Wanda Connor of Kirbyville, Musette Spears of Beaumont, Loretta Shook of Kountze and Vera Beth Foreman of Houston; sister, Dovie Cunningham of Pineland; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Jimmy Wayne Lewis, Sr., 48, died Tuesday, July 9, 1996 at his residence. Memorial service was held Thursday, July 11 in the Jim Good Lake Pavilion under the direction of Stringer & Griffin Funeral Home of Jasper. A native of Bleakwood and former resident of Kirbyville he lived in Jasper four years and was a mechanic for Jasper Newton Electric Cooperation. Survivors include his wife, Darlene Lewis of Jasper; sons, Jimmy Wayne Lewis, Jr. of Kirbyville, Justin Wayne Lewis of Jasper; daughter, Sherry Lewis Reese of New York; brothers, Floyd Lewis and Thomas Lewis, both of Kirbyville; A.C. Lewis of Honey Island, and Kenneth Lewis of Angleton; sisters, Leona Sims and Christine Bland, both of Bleakwood, and Dorothy Mae Jean of Newton; and eight grandchildren.
