Josephine Shepherd, 85, of Kirbyville died Thursday, January 27, 2000 at her residence. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at E.E. Stringer Funeral Home in Kirbyville with burial at King Cemetery in Hartburg. Visitation will be today at the funeral home. A native of Hemphill and former longtime resident of Orange, she lived in Kirbyville 20 years. Survivors include sons, Jim Shepherd of Kirbyville, Flem Shepherd of Wallace, S.C., Fred Shepherd of Atlanta, Ga., and John Shepherd of Port Arthur; daughter, Sarah Shepherd of Kirbyville; brother, Bill Inman of Hartford, Mich.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Shuff, Lula Ashworth
Funeral services for Mrs. Lula Ashworth Shuff, 82, will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Causey's E.E. Stringer Funeral Home. The Rev. Drew Sheffield will officiate. Burial will be in the Antioch Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons. She died in a Buna Medical Center at 4 p.m. Sunday, December 20, 1970. She was a native of Louisiana and lived in Buna for many years. She was a member of the Central Baptist Church. Survivors are six sons, Nalyar Hatch of Silsbee, Everett Hatch of Houston, Vernon Hatch of Nederland and Clarence Thompson of Dallas; Four daughters, Mrs. Josephene Carpenter and Mrs. Herbert Stanley both of Buna, Mrs. A.W. Haneley of Nederland and Mrs. Wilburn Ansley of Pasadena; three brothers, Maglee Pink and Joe Droddy, all of Oakdale, La.; 37 grandchildren and 49 great-grandchildren.

Shute, Frederick Niles Jr.
Services for Frederick Niles Shute, Jr., 74, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Causey’s E.E. Stringer Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Morse Cemetery. Shute died at his home Friday, May ??, 1979 He was a native and life-long resident of Buna and was a retired logging contractor. Survivors include seven daughters, Aileen Sheppard and Rita Williamson, both of Buna, Nona Clark of Shreveport, La., Lurla West of Orange, Lavern Keen of Cleveland, Virginia Berry of Vinton, La. and Hattie Leavings of Deweyville; three sons, James Shute of Orange, Forrest Ray Shute of Buna and Wallace Shute of Deweyville; one sister, Dossie Turner of Buna; one brother, Earl Shute of Call; 29 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

KIRBYVILLE – John Earl Shute, 72, of Call died at 7 a.m. Sunday, August 24, 1980 at his campsite on the Neches River. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Causey’s E.E. Stringer Funeral Home of Kirbyville with burial in Antioch Cemetery. A native of Buna, he had lived in Call 38 years and was a retired carpenter. Survivors include his wife, Vaudie Cooley Shute of Call; a daughter, Glenda Chatham of Call; a sister, Dossie Mae Williford of Vidor; and three grandchildren.

BODY OF SIAU IS STILL MISSING
Man Drowns in Neches River Southwest of Kirbyville
KIRBYVILLE, Texas, July 22, 1953 – The body of Dalton James Siau, 36, who drowned at 10 p.m. Tuesday in the Neches river had not been recovered at a late hour Wednesday night. A professional diver from Beaumont has gone to the scene of the tragedy to assist in locating the body. Mr. Siau accompanied by Alton Wilson and Dennis West were running a trot line across the river when their outboard motor stalled. When they managed to get it started again the boat swamped and turned over. The other two men managed to swim ashore but Mr. Siau was unable to make it. The news of the tragedy was relayed to Kirbyville about 11:15 p.m. Tuesday night and a number of volunteer firemen and citizens assisted in the search up to an early hour. After daylight continuous dragging of the river was carried on by people from the Kirbyville area. The accident occurred at Wright’s landing on the Neches river about 15 miles southwest of Kirbyville. Mr. Siau recently returned from Vallejo, Cal., to live at the landing where he was a commercial fisherman. He was a native of Kirbyville. Survivors are his wife; his mother, Mrs. J.C. Siau of Kirbyville; three brothers, Bennie of Kirbyville, Eddie of Nederland and Willie Siau of California; five sisters, Mrs. Henry Smith of Orange, Mrs. R.L. Hackett of Nederland, Mrs. Leory Gertis of Seguin, Mrs. Narceille Wallace of Menard and Mrs. Tom Arnold of Corpus Christi.

Siau, Florence Annie Runyon

Funeral services for Florence Annie Runyon Siau, 58, of Rt. 1, Call, were held Sunday at 3:p.m. in the Kirbyville Church of Christ with James Carter, Pastor, officiating. Burial was in Bean Cemetery under the direction of Causey’s E.E. Stringer Funeral Home. Mrs. Siau died Friday night in St. Elizabeth Hospital, Beaumont, from injuries received in an auto accident about 5:00 p.m. Friday on FM 82, near the E.O. Seike State Forest. She was a native of Jonesboro, La., and had lived in the Kirbyville area about 20 years. She was a member of the Church of Christ. She is survived by her husband, Bennie F. Siau, Call; three daughters, Mrs. Laverne Davis, Buna, Mrs. Beth Hicks and Miss Sabrina Siau, of Houston; one son, Donald Siau, Beaumont; her mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Runyon, Jonesboro, La.; four sisters, Mrs. Katie Smedley, Mrs. Evelyn Smitherman and Mrs. Dorothy Rushing, all of Jonesboro, and Mrs. Pansy Savara of New Orleans; three brothers, Henry Runyon and Walter Runyon, both of Jonesboro and Roy Runyon, Baldwin Park, Calif., and seven grandchildren.

Siau, James J. “Jim”
James J. “Jim” Siau, 78, of Newton died Monday, November 21, 1995 at Jasper Memorial Hospital. Funeral was held Wednesday, November 23 at Smith Funeral Home in Newton with burial at Newton City Cemetery. A Native of Kirbyville, he lived in Newton 50 years and was a retired construction carpenter. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran. Survivors include his wife, Mary Lou Siau of Newton; sons, Vernon Ray “Bo” Siau of Newton, David Wayne Siau of Kirbyville and Tom Siau of Lufkin; daughter, Mary Elaine Woods of Spurger; sisters, Irene Love of Kirbyville, Mertie Mock of Spurger and Nettie Denmon of Silsbee; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Simmons, Addison Albert
Funeral services for Addison Albert Simmons, 75, of 2000 Evangeline Drive, will be held at 3 p.m. today at the graveside in Newton Cemetery in Newton. Arrangements are under the direction of Kelley-Hixson Funeral Home of Beaumont. Simmons died Monday, September 18, 1972 at his home. He was a retired carpenter and had lived in Beaumont for 30 years. Surviving are two sons, Weldon W. Simmons of Beaumont and Ira Ray Simmons, of Vidor; a daughter Mrs. C.K. Couch of Kirbyville three sisters, Mrs. Tom Simmons of Vidor, Mrs. John Dubose of Jasper and Mrs. Leslie Smith of San Jacinto City; three brothers, H.B Simmons of Silsbee, John Simmons of Orange, E.A. Simmons of Newton; 15 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Simmons, Ollie Newton
Funeral services for Mrs. Ollie Newton Simmons, 93, of Buna will be announced by E.E. Stringer Funeral Home of Kirbyville. Mrs. Simmons Died Tuesday, October 31, 1972, in a Buna nursing home. She was a former resident of Kirbyville, and was the last member of the pioneer family of Newton County. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Cora Smith, Segno, Mrs. Sally Forse, Port Arthur, and Mrs. Dorothy Odom, Beaumont; and six sons, Earnest Simmons, Silsbee, Martin Simmons, Rosenburg, Clarence Simmons, Fredricksburg, R.E., and Lonnie Simmons, both of Kirbyville, and Owen Simmons, Grand Prairie.

John David Simmons, 73, of Newton, died Sunday in a Newton hospital. He was a retired farmer and stockman. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today in the Newton Pentecostal Church. Burial will be in the Bob Herrin Cemetery under the direction of Griner Funeral Home. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Leona Simmons; a son, Rarl Simmons, Beaumont; a sister, Mrs. Birtie Cole, El Paso.

NEWTON – Funeral for Obie Simmons, 62, of Newton will be at 2:30 p.m. today in the Union Missionary Baptist Church with burial in Simmons Cemetery near Burkeville under direction of Griner Funeral Home. He died in his home Monday after a sudden illness. A lifelong resident of Newton, he was a carpenter. Survivors include one son, Danny Simmons of Houston; one stepson, Jerry Medley of Philadelphia, and one brother, Shine Simmons of Burkeville.

KIRBYVILLE – Arnold Lee Sims, 46, of Call died at 4:30 a.m. Wednesday at Max Mixson Memorial Clinic after a heart attack. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at Call Junction Baptist Church in Call with burial at Zion Hill Cemetery under direction of Causey’s E.E. Stringer Funeral Home. A native of Bleakwood, he had lived in the Kirbyville area all his life. He was employed in the maintenance department of Jasper-Newton Electric Co-op in Kirbyville. Survivors include his wife, Janet Sims; a son, Ronnie Sims of Call; and three daughters, Melba, Laura, and Sharon Sims, all of Call.

Sims, C.W.
C.W. Sims, 68, of Saratoga died Saturday, January 22, 2000 at his residence. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Broussard’s Mortuary in Kountze with cremation to follow at a later date. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today at the mortuary. A native of Call Junction, he lived in Saratoga 30 years and was retired from the U.S. Marine Corps. He was also a Vietnam War U.S. Marine Corps veteran. Survivors include his wife, Linda Sims of Votaw; daughters, Debbie Oliver of Honey Island, Teresa Wilson of Saratoga, Tracy Martin of Kountze and Karen Huelsman of Silsbee; stepdaughter, Lori Thompson of Votaw; sons, C.W. Sims Jr. of Livingston and Kevin Sims of Silsbee; stepsons, James Buffington of Votaw and Charles Buffington of Richmond; sister, Ruby Irene Brown of Houston; 16 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Melvin Russell Sims, 44, of Bleakwood Community, near Kirbyville, will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Call Junction Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Zion Hill Cemetery, directed by Causey's E.E. Stringer Funeral Home. He died at 4 p.m. Sunday, November 19, 1972 in a Kirbyville hospital. A veteran of World War II, he was a boilermaker for the Gulf Oil Co. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Jackie Smith Sims, a daughter, Miss Rachel Ann Sims; two sons, Michael and Bennie Sims, all of Bleakwood; and a brother, Arnold Sims, Kirbyville.

KIRBYVILLE – Funeral services for A.C. “Crook” Singletary, 70, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Kirbyville United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Kirbyville Cemetery directed by Causey's E.E. Stringer Funeral Home. He died at 4:25 p.m. Thursday in Mixson Memorial Hospital after a long illness. He was a widely known Southeast Texas automobile dealer and was a former member of the Kirbyville city council. Survivors include his wife, Lillian Sheffield Singletary; two sisters, Lila Casteel of Beaumont and Angie Parker of Kirbyville; one brother, Wilmer Singletary of Florida.

KIRBYVILLE – Funeral for Delia Davis Singletary, 92, will be at 3 p.m. today in Causey’s E.E. Stringer Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Davis Cemetery. Mrs. Singletary died at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Buna Medical Center. She was a lifelong area resident and a descendant of early settlers here. Survivors include three daughters, Annie Glenn, Ellie Berwick and Velma Smith, all of Kirbyville; a son, Sam Singletary Jr. of Kirbyville and a brother, J.D. Davis of Roganville.

Funeral services for Jasper J. Singletary, 62, of Kirbyville will be at 2 p.m. today in Causey’s E.E. Stringer Funeral Home. Burial will be in Davis Cemetery. Singletary died at 1 p.m. Wednesday, December 12, 1973 in a Houston hospital. A native of Jasper County, he was a retired merchant. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Evelyn Singletary; one stepson, Dr. W.D. Weatherford, Jr. of San Antonio, and one stepdaughter, Mrs. Jo Evelyn Humphries of Los Vegas, Nev.

Singletary, Tom R.
Tom R. Singletary, 83, of Silsbee, died at 7:45 p.m. Thursday at his home after a brief illness. He was the son of the late Jiles and Martha Lee Singletary. He was a native of Lee’s Mill, Texas and had lived in Silsbee for the past twenty-five years. Mr. Singletary attended Texas A&M University. He was a former Road Commissioner in Newton County. He was in the automobile business in Jasper, Orange and Silsbee. He was a veteran of World War I and also belonged to the First Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today in Farmer Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. R.E. Barclay, pastor of the First Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Kirbyville Cemetery. Pallbearers will be C.J. Thorn, John Skinner, Truitt Sharbutt, Milton Benson, J.D. Donaldson and Jack Jeffcoat. All members of the Friendship Sunday School Class of the First Baptist Church will be honorary pallbearers. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Tressa Singletary, of Silsbee, and a daughter, Mrs. Beth Goodman of Carrollton, Texas.

Singleton, K.D.
K.D. Singleton, 82, of Kirbyville died Monday, August 22, 1994 at Jasper Memorial Hospital. Funeral was held Wednesday, August 24 at E.E. Stringer Funeral Home in Kirbyville with burial at Davis Cemetery in Beulah Springs community. A lifelong resident of Kirbyville, he was a retired welder for American Bridge. Survivors include a son, William David Singleton of Cassville, Pennsylvania; daughters, Jeanie Holt of Lumberton and Iris Ferguson of fort Worth; brother, Jack Singleton of Nederland; and five grandchildren.

Funeral services for William Eldrege Singleton, 62, of Kirbyville will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Friendship Church near Roganville. The Rev. Haskell Humphrey will officiate. Burial in the Church cemetery will be under direction of Causey Stringer Funeral Home. Singleton died late Friday, Oct 13, 1967 in Veterans Memorial Hospital in Houston, where he had been one week. He was born in Buna and had lived here many years. He was a retired sawmill worker. He was a veteran of World War II. Surviving are two brothers, A.J. Singleton of Nederland and K.D. Singleton of Kirbyville, and four sisters, Mrs. Evie Phelps, Mrs. Madie Windham, Mrs. Thelma Ford and Mrs. Althilea Sweat, all of Kirbyville.

Bevis Skinner, 87, of Kirbyville died Friday, July 15, 1994 at Avalon Place Nursing Home in Kirbyville. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at E.E. Stringer Funeral Home in Kirbyville with burial at Bean Cemetery in Kirbyville. Survivors include his wife, Lida Skinner of Kirbyville; sons, Verlon Skinner of Kirbyville and Carlo Skinner of Silsbee; daughter, Laverne Palmer of Nederland and Janet Golden of Huffman; 10 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Slaughter, Ola Mae
Ola Mae Slaughter, 94, of Kirbyville died Thursday at Cresthaven Nursing Home in Groves. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Causey’s E.E. Stringer Funeral home in Kirbyville with burial in Kirbyville Cemetery. Local arrangements were handled by Levingston Funeral Home in Groves. A native of West and a longtime resident of Harlingen, she lived in Kirbyville 28 years. Survivors include two daughters, Bobbye Tucker of Groves and Marie Hanson of Ozona; three sons, Monroe Slaughter and J.C. Slaughter Jr., both of San Antonio and Charles Slaughter of Spicewood; 14 grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

Funeral service for William Durwood Skinner, 61, of Kirbyville was held February 6 at Causey’s E.E. Stringer Funeral Home in Kirbyville with burial in Magnolia Springs Cemetery. He died Monday, February 4, 1985 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont after an illness. A lifelong resident of Kirbyville he was a retired pumper from Gulf Oil. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include a daughter, Sheryl Bolton of Orange; two sons, Paul M. Skinner of Sour Lake and Bill Skinner of Beaumont; mother, Ina Morgan of Kirbyville; stepmother, Viona Skinner, also of Kirbyville; two sisters, Mattie Kelley of Lumberton and Mollie Fitch of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; four brothers, O.D. Skinner of Magnolia Springs, Kenneth Faustner of Ardmore, Oklahoma, Pat Skinner of Baytown and Mike Skinner of Victoria; and five grandchildren.

Skinner died at 7 a.m. Friday in a Beaumont nursing home. He was a retired sawmill worker and had been a resident of Lumberton for six months. Survivors include his wife, Viona Hooper Skinner; two daughters, Mollie Fitch of New Orleans and Mattie Kelley of Lumberton; four sons, Orlan Skinner of Magnolia Springs, Durwood Skinner of Kirbyville, Mike Skinner of Victoria, and Pat Skinner of Houston; one sister, Melissa Glover of Bridge City; one brother, Bevis Skinner of Kirbyville.
