Fred Allison
Fred Allison, 82, of Midland, passed away Saturday, Oct. 6, 2001 in Santa Monica, Calif. Services will be 3 p.m. Friday at the Ellis Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Tommy Potter of the First Christian Church officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be Joe Henderson, Gordon Knox, Bill Probrandt, Joe Leyva, Robert Whitt and Eric Tabb. Mr. Allison was born June 4, 1919 in Corsicana to Fred and Dolly Allison. He attended Texas A&M University where he studied animal husbandry. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving in India, China and Burma (where he helped in building the Burma Road). Mr. Allison came to West Texas several years after the war to drill for oil while still operating the Allison Ranch in Corsicana. He owned and operated Estoril Producing Corporation as well as several other oil and gas entities, retiring in 1989. His love for travel carried him around the world many times and often to his beloved Hawaii. He enjoyed California and spent most of his later years in Santa Monica. He is survived by his wife, Janet; sons, Freddy Allison of Midland and Bill Allison of Shawnee, Okla.; step-sons, Chris Juaz and Shawn Juaz; grandchildren, Karey Hopkins and Phillip Allison and one great granddaughter Allison Hopkins. Claudia Estelle Goff Mays (Gladys Faye Mays), 61, of Dallas passed away Saturday, Oct. 6, 2001. Wake services will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at Washington Memorial Funeral Home, 1950 Canada Drive, Dallas. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Burning Bush Baptist Church, 4943 Bonnie View, Dallas, with the Rev. Johnny Brown officiating. Interment will follow at Lincoln Memorial Park in Dallas. Mrs. Mays was born April 26, 1940 in Kerens. She was preceded in death by her parents, Willie Goff and Lillian M. Hurd; sisters, Louise and Jessie; husband, Alton Mays Jr.; son, Myron E. Mays. Claude M. Lane
Claude M. Lane, 58, of Mansfield, La. and formerly of Corsicana, passed away Monday, Oct. 8, 2001 in Mansfield, La. Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Griffin-Roughton Chapel with Nathan Andrews officiating. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Mr. Lane was born Jan. 29, 1943 in Blooming Grove to J.A. and Lizzie Lane. He graduated from Corsicana High School in 1961. He was a former city commissioner and mayor pro-tem of the city of Corsicana. Mr. Lane was also a 3rd Degree Mason and a Shriner. Mr. Lane raised his family in the East Texas area where he served in numerous civic organizations. He spent his career in the food service, the past 17 years as the Taylor Freezer and Nieco Broiler distributor for Northern Louisiana and was the owner of Lane Commercial Equipment in Shreveport, La. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Jim Lane. Mr. Lane is survived by his wife of 39 years, Janie Andrews Lane; daughters, Cheri Lane of Grand Saline, Rhonda Wilson and husband Terry of Van; sons, Clyde Lane Jr. and wife Regina of Tyler, Chris Lane and wife Laura of Tyler, and Matthew Lane of Mansfield, La.; grandchildren, Erin and Lauren Gaskey, Cameron Lane, Jacob and Ashten Lane, Whitney and Andy Wilson, and Mercedes Lane; in-laws, G.H. and Ann Andrews of Corsicana; brothers, Derwood, Bruce, Robert and Buford Lane; sisters, Mary Ryno and Emma Vinson; and numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends. Carrie Hardiman
Carrie Hardiman, 98, of Corsicana passed away Sunday, Oct. 7, 2001 at Navarro Regional Hospital. Graveside services will be 3:30 p.m. today at Woodland Memorial Park with Brother George Proctor-Smith officiating. Mrs. Hardiman was born July 22, 1903 in Limestone County. She was a member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church, and was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jesse and Elvira Jefferson; husband, Jackson Hardiman Sr.; sons, Jackson Hardiman Jr., Clint Hardiman, Leonard Hardiman and James Hardiman; three sisters and two brothers. Harriett Ann Finch Curington

Mrs. Curington was born Nov. 2, 1938 in Jonesboro, Ark. to John S. and Sarah Finch. She graduated from Corsicana High School and Texas Christian University, and held a master's degree from Southwest Texas State University. She married Paul W. Curington Dec. 7, 1991 in Corsicana. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Corsicana and active in the Emmaus movement. Mrs. Curington taught elementary school for 30 years, retiring from Alamo Heights Independent School District of San Antonio in 1990 after 25 years there. She was deeply loved by her family and friends, and was always thinking of others. Her generosity of spirit and sweet smile will stay in her family's memory forever. Mrs. Curington is survived by her parents, John and Sarah Finch of Corsicana; husband, Paul W. Ealy Campbell
Ealy Campbell, 91, of Corsicana passed away Monday, Oct. 8, 2001 at Heritage Oaks Retirement Center. Visitation will be held from noon to 7 p.m. today at M.R. Smith Parlor for Funerals. Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Bethlehem Baptist Church, the Rev. Dairy Johnson, pastor, and the Rev. C. Oliver of Pleasant Olive Baptist Church of Malone officiating. S.H. Jemerson will be eulogist. Family members will serve as pallbearers. Mr. Campbell was born Nov. 15, 1909 in Centerville. He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters. Izetta Weatherby
Izetta Weatherby, 84, of Hubbard passed away Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001 in Mexia. Services will be 1 p.m. today at Wade Funeral Chapel with the Rev. James Hooper officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Hubbard. Pallbearers will be James Harold Weatherby, Jimmy Weatherby, Steve Weatherby, Joe Frank Bell, Gene Couch and Gerald Cox. Mrs. Weatherby was born Oct. 25, 1916 in Fort Worth. She was a 1933 graduate of Santa Monica High School in Santa Monica, Calif., and also attended Ramona School of Drama in Santa Monica. She married Bryan Weatherby Oct. 25, 1935. She had been a resident of Hubbard since 1935. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Hubbard, Hubbard Garden Club and was a charter member of the Hubbard Hospital Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Bryan Weatherby in 1992. Mrs. Weatherby is survived by her stepdaughter, Sharon Christopher of Katy; step grandson, Bryan Carter of Herndon, Va.; and step great-granddaughter, Hannah Marie Carter of Herndon, Va. Don McElwreath
Don McElwreath, 65, of Cedar Park passed away on Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001 in Round Rock. A private family graveside service will be held today at Oakwood Cemetery with the Rev. Teri Hildebrand officiating. Mr. McElwreath was born April 9, 1936 in Corsicana to Otis and Martha McElwreath. He was a graduate of North Texas State University. He owned Don McElwreath Real Estate Company where he was involved in land development, ranch sales and commercial real estate for the past 35 years. He was an avid classic car collector with a love of antique Fords from the 1930s and 1940s. Evelyn Conger, 86, of Corsicana passed away Sunday, Oct. 14, 2001 in Corsicana. Graveside services will be 4 p.m. today at Dresden Cemetery with the Rev. Wayne Mahoney officiating. Mrs. Conger was born Jan. 27, 1915 in Navarro Mills where she lived until she moved to Corsicana in the 1930s. She remained a member of Navarro Mills Baptist Church. The last two years of her life she resided at the Twilight Home where she received excellent care from the nurses, aides and staff. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Dean Baggett; husband, Paul Conger; mother, Effie Alice Hodges; father, Richard Lon Hodges; and three sisters. Oscar Rex Whiteside
Dr. Oscar Rex Whiteside, 72, of Corsicana passed away Monday, Oct. 15, 2001 at Navarro Regional Hospital. Visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home. Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Family Life Center of First Baptist Church with the Rev. B.F. Risinger Jr. officiating. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Pallbearers will be John Fitch Jr., Clint Pyron, Derrick Whiteside, Jimmy Starling, Jack Whiteside, Chuck Whiteside, Ken Whiteside and Kurt Whiteside. Dr. Whiteside was born Oct. 23, 1928 in Grapevine, and was a graduate of Grapevine High School. He served his country in two different uniforms, the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Army, during the Korean conflict. He received his bachelor of science degree from Texas A&M University, a master of science degree from Texas Christian University and a doctor of education degree from Baylor University. In 1961, he joined the newly formed Hill Junior College in Hillsboro where he served as registrar and dean. In 1975, he accepted a position as dean of instructional services at Victoria College in Victoria. He had 34 years of experience in college teaching and administration. He retired in 1990 and moved to Corsicana. He served as interim dean at both the Mexia and Waxahachie campuses of Navarro College. He was a deacon and men's Sunday school teacher at First Baptist Church in Corsicana, and was a member of the Navarro County Water Board and Navarro College presidential search committee. Survivors include his wife, Freda Boyer Whiteside of Corsicana, whom he married in 1952; son and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Cheryl Whiteside of Grayslake, Ill.; daughters and sons-in-law, Cindy and John Fitch of Morgantown, W.V. and Sherri and Troy Pyron of Hillsboro; six grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. Charles H. Whiteside of Kilgore and Mr. and Mrs. Darwin L. Whiteside of Royse City; and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 510 W. Collin St., Corsicana, Texas 75110. Clara Buck Hodge
Clara Buck Hodge, 94, formerly of Corsicana, passed away Monday, Oct. 15, 2001 at Brentwood Place Two Nursing Home in Dallas. Visitation will be 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday at Corley Funeral Home. Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Corley Funeral Home Chapel. Pallbearers will be Leon Buck, Forrest Scarborough, Lee Glover, Sonny Buck and Matt Tapp. Mrs. Hodge was born Jan. 26, 1907 in Alabama City, Ala. to Florence Holland Buck and Carter Tubb Buck. She grew up in Corsicana and was a member of Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Corsicana. She was a longtime resident of Mesquite and a member of The Church of the Resurrection. She graduated from Texas Women's University. She was a social worker and spent many years as a case worker for The Lighthouse for the Blind in Dallas in addition to working at other children's homes in Dallas and Corsicana. Mrs. Hodge was preceded in death by children Emily, Janet, Joe and Clarence; brothers Roy and Raymond Buck and sisters Ruth Tirado and Ruby Garrett. She is survived by sister Elora Buck Alderman of Mesquite; brother Leon Buck of Midland; nieces Katy Scarborough of Mesquite, JaNa Handley of Midland, Grace Jones of Boerne and Doris Liggett of Pinole, Calif.; nephews Sonny Buck of Midland, James Glasgow of Shreveport and Carter and John Lonon of Dallas; and several great nieces and great nephews. Beatrice Howell, 93, of Corsicana passed away Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001 at Navarro Regional Hospital. Services will be 2 p.m. today at Griffin-Roughton Chapel with the Rev. B.F. Risinger officiating assisted by Mrs. Howell's grandsons the Rev. David Murphy and the Rev. Glen Murphy. Interment will follow at Hamilton-Beeman Cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Mrs. Howell was born Oct. 11, 1908 in Nevada, Texas to John W. and Martha Jane Ross. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, James K. Howell; and grandson, Michael Atkeisson; and parents. William Freeman "Bill' Ponder
William Freeman "Bill" Ponder, 84, of Corsicana passed away Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001 at Navarro Regional Hospital. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home. Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Griffin-Roughton Chapel with the Rev. B.F. Risinger officiating and assisted by the Rev. Buford Stockard and Brother Bill Honea. Mr. Ponder was born April 5, 1917 in Frost to William F. and Nannie Albritton Ponder Sr. He grew up on a farm, served in the U.S. Army during World War II, was a pumper in the oil fields for 34 years, and retired from Crown Central Oil Company in 1984. He was a member of First Baptist Church for many years. He was preceded in death by his parents; and only brother, David A. Ponder. Mr. Ponder is survived by his wife of 50 years, Ava Nell Bilberry Ponder of Corsicana; sisters, Gay Wright of Corsicana, Elizabeth Froese of Dallas, Catherin Stockard of Palestine, Norine Ponder of Dallas and Robbie Elmore of Frost; and sister-in-law, Ann Ponder of Dallas. Billy Chappell
Billy Chappell, 71, of Fairfield passed away Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001 at East Texas Medical Center in Fairfield. Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Calvary Baptist Church in Fairfield with the Rev. Wyatt Tisdale and the Rev. Dean Easterling officiating. Interment will follow at Lake Chapel Cemetery in Fairfield. Mr. Chappell was born March 13, 1930 in Fairfield. He married Patricia Beasley Chappell July 22, 1952. He served in the U.S. Army and was a Korean War veteran. He was a member of Fairfield VFW Post No. 5872. He was a member and deacon at Ward Prairie Baptist Church. He was retired from the Texas Highway Department. Charles S. "Mac' McClanahan
Charles S. "Mac" McClanahan, 87, of Corsicana passed away Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001 at Navarro Regional Hospital. Visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home. Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Griffin-Roughton Chapel with the Rev. B.F. Risinger and Brother Bill Honea officiating. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Joe Sims Sr., Monty Trimble, Norman Gilcrease, Ross Maxfield, Harold Williamson and David Taylor. Mr. McClanahan was born March 12, 1914 in Dallas to Lonnie and Hattie McClanahan. He graduated from Mexia High School in 1933, and played four years of football as a Mexia Black Cat known as "Spec McClanahan." He worked in the East Texas oil field until 1939. After moving to Corsicana in 1939, he served during the war as a "lead-man" ship welder in the Houston shipyards. He owned and operated the Texaco Service Station on Seventh Avenue beginning in 1939. He began McClanahan Rentals in 1964, and opened the first automatic car wash in Corsicana in 1967. He expanded McClanahan Rentals to West Seventh Avenue in 1973, and retired in 1980 selling to his son Chuck. Mr. McClanahan was an active member, Sunday school teacher of many years and deacon of First Baptist Church in Corsicana. He was an active member of Corsicana Noon Lions Club, First Baptist Church Solid Rockers Choir, Gideon International, and was a scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America. He was a charter member of the Texas Rental Association and a member of the American Rental Association. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jo L. McClanahan in 1990; and brothers, Virgil and Oneal McClanahan. Mr. McClanahan is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Chuck and Susan McClanahan of Corsicana; daughters and sons-in-law, Diane and Joe Garner of Lubbock and Lana and Dewayne Gragg of Corsicana; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and sisters, Edith Smith of Tulsa, Okla. and Ouisa Robbins of Claremore, Okla. William Boyd McCartney
William Boyd McCartney was called to enter his eternal home in heaven Oct. 17, 2001. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Rest Haven Funeral Home, State Highway 66 and Farm-to-Market Road 549, Rockwall. Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church, 1408 S. Goliad, Rockwall, with the Rev. Keith P. Boone and the Rev. William Slack officiating. Interment will follow at Abston Cemetery in Lavon. Pallbearers will be Robert Aycock, Brad Boyd, Stuart Hendry, Jeff Massey, Chuck Roark and David Taylor. Mr. McCartney was born May 25, 1926 in Greenville to Ewell Pierce McCartney and O'Reda Boyd McCartney. He graduated from Greenville High School in 1943. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, most notably in the Battle of Okinawa. After the war, he attended SMU where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta. White at SMU, he married Martha "Patsy" Hendry. They raised their four children in Lavon and later Greenville. Mr. McCartney's business career began in 1948 with the L.G. Balfour Co. After a distinguished career with Balfour, he established two companies in 1971, a collegiate retail store near SMU and a jewelry manufacturing wholesale business which served college bookstores and campus shops nationwide. Both of these companies are still family owned and operated 30 years later. His passion which exceeded his interest in business was of farming and ranching. It was while working on his grandfather's farm in his youth that Mr. McCartney's love of raising cattle and crops was developed. For almost all of his adult life, he had a working ranch, mostly in Rockwall and Hunt counties. The in 1985 when he retired from the business world, he acquired his dream ranch in Navarro County. He ran the ranch with as much interest and excitement in 2001 as he did on the day it was purchased. He loved to dance and developed many lasting friendships through his love for big band music and push dancing. Those cherished friendships and his enormous love for his family will never be forgotten. Mr. McCartney had an extraordinary zest for life. His boundless enthusiasm, his wonderful sense of humor and his tremendous smile will be missed by all who knew him. He was always young at heart and lived every day in full appreciation of God's wonder. He was preceded in death by his parents; and wife, Billie Beaird McCartney who he married in 1990. Mr. McCartney is survived by his children, Janet McCartney Johnson and husband Don of Greenville, Blake Boyd McCartney and wife Jolene of Heath, Carolyn McCartney Culbert and husband Steve of Dallas, and Martha McCartney Schar and husband Dwight of McLean, Va.; grandchildren, Mallory Culbert, Blair McCartney, Brooke McCartney, Stuart Schar and Spencer Schar; and sister, Barbara McCartney Mason and husband Jack of Norman, Okla. David Redd
David Redd, 32, left this world to pass into eternal peace on Tuesday, Oct. 16 in Tyler. Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. today at St. Matthew's Catholic Church with Monsignor John Flynn officiating. Interment will follow at Rosewood Park Cemetery. Mr. Redd was born in Hutchinson, Kan. and spent most of his childhood years living in Hutchinson, Kan., Pittsburg, Kan. and Corsicana. He moved with his family to Proctor, Minn. and spent several years in high school there before graduating from Pine Tree High School in 1987. He was always a favorite classmate in Minnesota because he was the kid from the South who was willing to take jokes about where he was from and good naturedly give them right back. He was married on Oct. 25, 1997 to Leslie Schroer. After spending a few years in Longview, they moved to Tyler. While shy at first, he could easily take over an entire crowd with his quick wit. He had a good heart, strong devotion to his wife, family and friends and a beautiful smile that would warm your heart. He would have done anything for his family and friends. He will be missed by all that knew him. He was a warm and caring man who was well liked by all that knew him. He was a special son to his family who were always proud of him for who he was. He was preceded in death by his sister, Laura Lea; nephew, Ryan Anthony Nicholson; maternal grandparents, Lee and Mary Jaenicke; and paternal grandfather, Elmer Redd. Mr. Redd is survived by his wife, Leslie of Tyler; mother and step father, Marlee and Chuck Schmitt of Longview; father, Dave Redd of Lufkin; parents-in-Iaw, Doug and Gloria Schroer of Longview; paternal grandmother, Wanda Redd of Kansas; and an uncle and wife, Vern and Pat Jaenicke of Texas.
