Emily Janes
Emily Kuropata Janes, 91, of Fayetteville, passed away Friday, June 21, 2002 in a La Grange nursing home. She was born Aug. 21, 1910 in New Ulm, Texas to Stephan and Fanny (Coufal) Kuropata. She was baptized Jan. 15, 1911 in Industry, Texas by Henry Juren and confirmed there also. Emily was educated in County Line School of the Latium community. On July 30, 1934, she was married to Charles Henry Janes in Nelsonville Brethren Church by Pastor Anton Motycka and became a housewife. She was a member of Wesley Brethren Church and attended Fayetteville Brethren Church. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Emilie and Daniel Bertsch of Fayetteville, daughter-in-law Faye Janes of Brenham, 11 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one step-great-great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Charles Henry Janes on Jan. 25, 1988, son Charles S. Janes, and brothers and sisters. Visitation with family will be from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, June 23, 2002 at Brenham Memorial Chapel. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, June 24, 2002 at Wesley Brethren Church, with Pastor Milton Maly officiating. Burial will follow in Wesley Brethren Church Cemetery. Pallbearers are David Bertsch, Steven Bertsch, Glen Roy Bertsch, Charles Henry Janes, Delbert Janes, Stephen Janes and Frankie Kuropata. Lois Smith
Lois O’Barr Smith, 99, former resident of Cypress, died June 17, 2002 at Kruse Memorial Lutheran Village in Brenham. Ms. Smith was born Feb. 18, 1903 in Ledbetter, Texas to Dr. J.T. and Willie A. (Blackwelder) O’Barr. She attended the Ledbetter schools. Ms. Smith was a homemaker. Survivors include her daughter-in-law, Jaynet Smith of Big Spring; daughter and son-in-law, Evva and James Lowery of Brenham; eight grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Ms. Smith was preceded in death by her son, Gene Smith; five brothers; and two sisters. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, June 25 at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Chappell Hill with Pastor David Beckworth officiating. Patsy Moon Farrer
Patsy Moon Farrer of Marion, Ind., born July 15, 1936, passed away Aug. 29, 2002. She was baptized in 1943 at Weslyan Methodist Church. She had resided in Brenham for 18 years. Survivors include sons, James and Nancy Farrer, Steven Farrer and Michael and Anna Farrer; brother and sisters, Roger and Bea Moon, Jean and Russel Poe and Betty Matticello; grandchildren, Ronnie, Jamie, Jason, Benjamin, Chadrick, Christopher and Shannon; and great-grandchildren, Justin, Alanna, Brianna, Lucas, Hanna and Hailee. Patsy was preceded in death by her mother and father, John D. and Anna L. Moon; brothers, James Grant and Chuck Moon; and great-grandson, Dillon Ray Farrer. A memorial service will be held Sept. 21 at 3 p.m. at Wesley Brethren Church with the Rev. Nello Strickland officiating. Thomas Earl Farrer
Thomas Earl Farrer of Kokomo, Ind., born Nov. 22, 1933, passed away Sept. 7, 2002. Survivors include his sons, Jim and Nancy Farrer, Steven Farrer, Mike and Anna Farrer and Mark Kelly; three brothers and one sister, all of Indiana; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his great-grandson, Dillon Ray Farrer. A memorial service will be held Sept. 21 at 3 p.m. at Wesley Brethren Church with the Rev. Nello Strickland officiating. Janie Felchak
Janie Felchak, 91, of Houston and formerly of Brenham, died Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2002 at Spring Branch Healthcare Center. She was born Aug. 21, 1911 in Brenham to Frank and Hattie (Slavinsky) Zientek. She was baptized and confirmed in St. Mary's Catholic Church and Nov. 5, 1935 she was married in the same church to Wallace Felchak by Msgr. Charles Weisnerowski. Janie also attended St. Mary's School. Janie was a housewife. She is survived by brothers, Wallace and wife Bertha Zientek of Houston, Joe Zientek of Houston and Steve Zientek of Houston; sisters, Mary Jankowiak of Houston, Julia Bilski of Houston and Angela and husband Charles Schubert of Brenham; also numerous nieces and nephews. Janie was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Wallace; brothers, Stanley, Ed, Frank and Bernard Zientek; and sister, Dorothy Zientek. A Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, 2002 by Deacon Bill Januszewski in Brenham Memorial Chapel. Funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 20, 2002 with Father Richard Tijerina as celebrant. Burial will follow in Calvary Catholic Cemetery. Malinda Zuehlke
Malinda Wieghat Zuehlke, 91, of Brenham, died Sept. 18, 2002, in Trinity Medical Center in Brenham. Mrs. Zuehlke was born April 4, 1911, in the Wiedeville community of Washington County to William and Bertha Wehring Wieghat. She was baptized June 4, 1911 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Wiedeville by Pastor T.H. Popsdorf and was confirmed March 28, 1926 in St. John Lutheran Church in Prairie Hill by Pastor Paul Gogolin. She attended Wiedeville School and graduated from Blinn College School of Nursing in 1962. She worked for many years as an LVN at Bohne Memorial Hospital and Sweetbriar Nursing Home. Mrs. Zuehlke was a former Sunday school teacher at St. John Lutheran Church of Prairie Hill and Grace Lutheran Church in Brenham. On Nov. 22, 1934, she was married to Herman Paul Zuehlke in St. John Lutheran Church in Prairie Hill by Pastor Gogolin. To this union two sons and one daughter were born: Fred Herman, Arthur Earl and Bertha Mae Zuehlke. Fred Herman died Nov. 15, 1941 at their home at the age of five years, six months and six days. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Herman Paul Zuehlke, on Feb. 6, 1982. Mrs. Zuehlke was the last of 10 children of the Wieghat family. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Arthur Earl and Marilynn Zuehlke of Houston; daughter and son-in-law, Bertha Mae and Warren Dale Sander of Slidell, La.; four grandchildren, Darren Dale Sander, Amber Dawn Landry, Scott Michael Zuehlke and Stacy Malinda Zuehlke; two great-grandchildren, Naomi Kate Landry and Logan Andrew Landry; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Nelda Kankel of Brenham, Dolores Zuehlke of Brenham, Herbert and Dorothy Zuehlke of Brenham, Paul and Mavis Zuehlke of Bryan and Fritz Almot Somerfeld of Brenham; and numerous cousins and friends. The funeral service will be held Friday, Sept. 20 at 1 p.m. in Christ Lutheran Church in Brenham with Pastor Blair Lundborg officiating. Burial will be in Prairie Lea Cemetery in Brenham. Thomas Whiddon
Thomas Gayle Whiddon passed away Sept. 20, 2002 after a long illness. The son of Thomas Eugene and Melissa (Smith) Whiddon, Gayle was born on his father’s farm near Chappell Hill Aug. 1, 1916. He married Virginia Cotten, daughter of Senator Clay and Mrs. Josephine Cotten on April 2, 1941. He graduated from Brenham High School in 1934 and majored in engineering and business administration at the University of Houston. He was instrumental in forming the first Engineering Society at the University, making Mr. H.R. Cullen an honorary member. Gayle spent his entire career with Hughes Tool Co., serving almost 50 years. He retired from Hughes Tool Co. in August 1961 as vice president of executive sales and marketing. His assignments by the company in Shreveport, La.; Tulsa, Okla.; New York City; Washington, D.C.; Midland, Texas and Dallas gave him many friends worldwide as well as insight into various oil and gas operations and suppliers. He was also contract, traffic, shipping service manager at the Landing Gear and Shell Plant for Hughes Tool Company. Gayle was the first sales coordinator for the company in West Texas, New Mexico and Arizona region and later regional operations manager in Dallas. He was a board member for many years for First United Methodist Church of downtown Houston and also served on the board of directors of Holly Hall Retirement Home of Houston, Houston Chamber of Commerce, Salvation Army, Red Cross and many other civil programs. He was a long time member of Society of Petroleum Engineers, NOMADS, Pioneer Oil Producers Society, Houston Petroleum Club and Braeburn Country Club. He was a past member of Dallas Athletic Club, Southern Hills Country Club (Tulsa), Tulsa Engineers Club, American Petroleum Institute (API), Petroleum Equipment Suppliers Assoc., Texas Midland Oil and Gas Assoc., Texas Independent Producers & Royalty Owners Assoc. and International Association of Drilling Contractors. Survivors include his wife, Virginia; sister, June Whiddon Dreyer of Brenham; sister-in-law, Ruth Cotten Whiddon Mann of Brenham; and nephews, Thomas Eugene Whiddon of Steamboat Springs, Colo. and Dr. Randolph Bailey of Houston. He is also survived by his great-nephews and niece, William Randolph Bailey, Clay Thomas Whiddon and Alexis Annette Bailey. Survivors also include Buddy England of Dallas, Milly Schaer of Chappell Hill and Joe Cole of Brenham; and several other nieces and nephews, as well as many friends worldwide. Eunice Wooster
Mrs. Eunice Lavda Walker Wooster, 90, of Nacogdoches, Texas, passed away Sept. 20, 2002. She was born Feb. 26, 1912 in Montgomery County, Texas to Robert Walker and Mary Jane Dean Walker. She was a homemaker and a member of the County Line Primitive Baptist Church of Cut-N-Shoot, Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Lewis Wooster in 1981. Mrs. Wooster is survived by sons, Richard Wooster and wife Sue of Jacksonville, Texas and Ralph Wooster and wife Edna of Beaumont, Texas; daughter, Nell Teer and husband Jerry of Nacogdoches, Texas; sister, Margie Frye of Sealy, Texas; eight grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren. Visitation will be Sunday, Sept. 22 at 1 p.m. at County Line Primitive Baptist Church. Delores Zuehlke
Delores Bothe Zuehlke, 83, of Brenham died Friday, Sept. 20, 2002 in St. Joseph Regional Health Center. She was born Dec. 17, 1918 in Brenham to August and Margarithe (Meyer) Bothe. She was both baptized May 30, 1919 and confirmed March 25, 1934 in Immanuel Lutheran Church of Wiedeville, where she remained a lifelong member. Delores attended Washington County Public School in Wiedeville. On Oct. 22, 1939, she was married to Willie F. Zuehlke by the Rev. Kurt Hartman. Delores and her husband owned Zuehlke’s Store, and she continued in the business after his death Sept. 5, 1981. Survivors include: her son, W. F. “Fritzie” Zuehlke Jr. and his wife Dorothy of Brenham and Houston; granddaughter Jennifer Ann Zuehlke of Houston; brothers Clarence Bothe of Meyersville, Texas, and Eugene Bothe of Brenham: sister Irene Helmer of Bryan; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Paul and Mavis Zuehlke of Bryan, Herbert and Dorothy Zuehlke of Brenham, Almot Fritz and Sydonia Sommerfeld of Brenham, and Nelda Kankel of Brenham; and a host of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by parents; husband, W. F. Zuehlke Sr.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Melvin Bothe, Lonnie Bothe, Ervin and Anita Bothe, and Elois Bothe; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Charlie Helmer, Raymond Kankel, Herman and Malinda Zuehlke, Lillian Zuehlke, and Elsie Sommerfeld. Jennifer Louise Fredericka DeBerry
Jennifer Louise Fredericka DeBerry, 37, of Kenney, Texas, died Sept. 24, 2002, at her residence. Miss DeBerry was born Dec. 29, 1964, in Austin, to James Ellis Sr. and Fredericka Richter DeBerry. She was baptized April 4, 1965 in Wilshire Presbyterian Church in Austin and was confirmed March 23, 1978 in First Presbyterian Church in Houston. Miss DeBerry was a teacher. Survivors include her mother, Fredericka DeBerry of Kenney; daughter, Samantha Anya Fredericka McGaughey of Kenney; brothers and sister-in-law, James Ellis Jr. and Virginia DeBerry of Midland and Geoffrey Matthew DeBerry of Seabrook; and uncle and aunt, Mike and Donna DeBerry of DeKalb. She was preceded in death by her father, James E. DeBerry Sr. A memorial service will be held Friday, Sept. 27 at 11 a.m. in St. James Lutheran Church in New Wehdem with Pastor Sid BohIs officiating. Royce Mascheck
Royce Mascheck, age 59 years, of the Roznov community near Fayetteville, passed away Friday morning at his home. He was born Nov. 15, 1942 to Emil and Antonie (Cordes) Mascheck, in Fayetteville. After serving in the National Guard from 1964 until 1970, he went to work as a carpenter in the maintenance department of Brenham State School. Dec. 11, 1982, he married Verlyn Faye Dusek in Wesley. Survivors include his wife, Verlyn Faye Mascheck of Fayetteville; three children, Tonie Faye Mascheck, Cody Lynn Mascheck and Kyle Allen Mascheck, all of Fayetteville; a brother-in-law, Lynn Dusek Jr. and his wife Beth of Wesley; father-in-law, Lynn Dusek Sr. of Wesley; one niece; and nephew. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday from the Wesley Brethren Church with the Rev. Nello Strickland and the Rev. Milton Maly officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Vera Brandt
Vera Ella Mayer Brandt began her heavenly journey at approximately 12:15 p.m. July 6, 2002, at the age of 92 years, seven months and two days. She was the daughter of Edwin O. Mayer and Eva Stoerner Mayer. She was born Dec. 4, 1909 in the Latium community of Washington County. She was baptized into the Lutheran faith Dec. 10, 1911 in the Winedale Church. She received her education in the Latium School of Washington County. She married Clemens Brandt Sept. 26, 1928. She spent her life as a homemaker on a small farm in the Latium community of Washington County. She enjoyed sewing and cooking, especially homemade bread and cookies, for her children and grandchildren. She was known for her pickle-canning recipe. Mrs. Brandt is survived by five children, Lloyd C. and wife Anna Rose Brandt of Burton, Milton E. and wife Judy Brandt of Houston, Frederick and wife Carol Brandt of Bellville and Rena and husband Donald Abel of Burton. Vera was the grandmother of 13, great-grandmother of 22 and great-great-grandmother of two. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clemens Brandt; son, Calvin A. Brandt; her grandson, Robert Wayne Brandt; her brother, Leslie Mayer; and her sister, Nita Pohl. She will be greatly missed by her family and many friends. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, July 9 at 10 a.m. in Memorial Oaks Chapel in Brenham with the Rev. Henry Beseda officiating. Burial will be in Latium Cemetery. Charles Jozwiak
Charles Pete Jozwiak, 88, died Sunday, July 7, 2002 in Brenham Rest Home. Charles was born Jan. 28, 1914 to Henry and Stella (Twadarski) Jozwiak in Chappell Hill, Texas and where he also attended school. On Nov. 4, 1936, he was married to Nancy Angle Faterkowski in St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Bellville. Charles was a welder and pipe fitter for a chemical plant. Charles is survived by his wife, Nancy Jozwiak of Brenham; sons and daughters-in-law, Johnny P. and wife Bernice Jozwiak of Brenham and Charles and wife Verna Ann Jozwiak of Somerville; five grandchildren, Kathy and husband Jon Sutherland, Elaine Dodd, Cindy and husband Greg Elmore, Louise and husband Robert Bielamowiez and Dale and wife Tanya Jozwiak; brother, Sigmund Jozwiak of Houston; and sister, Rosie Zientek of Chappell Hill; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Charles is preceded in death by his parents, seven brothers and three sisters. The rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 9 in Brenham Memorial Chapel by Deacon Dan Nowak. Estela G. Arch
Estela G. Arch, 76, of Burton, died Sept. 29, 2002 in a San Antonio hospital. Mrs. Arch was born Dec. 7, 1925 in Basey Samar, Philippines to Maximo and Sofia Tanawan Grefiel. On March 28, 1978, she was married to Leland Arch in San Antonio. Mrs. Arch was a devoted woman when coming to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also participated in the Feed My Lambs organization, which helps others feel very special. She also loved to play bingo. Mrs. Arch will be missed. Survivors include her daughter, Petra Anguiano of San Antonio; grandchildren, Alfonso Luis, Petra H. Anguiano Jr., Clarissa Anguiano, Melissa Anguiano, Teddy Garcia, David Lucio, Jackie Lucio and Alexis Lucio; 18 great-grandchildren; and sister, Ampro Grefiel of Manila, Philippines. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and two grandchildren. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2 in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Brenham with Father Richard Tijerina officiating. Burial will be in Prairie Lea Cemetery in Brenham. Arthur Carl May
Arthur Carl May, 94, of Fort Worth, Texas, died Sept. 21, 2002. He was born May 31, 1908 in Brenham to Arthur J. and Bertha (Meyer) May. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Brenham. Arthur was a graduate of Brenham High School. He married Bernice (Ferris) Murrah in February 1964, and she preceded him in death in 1996. He was employed by the Chevrolet dealership for 34 years as a bookkeeper and office manager and later was employed as office manager for Robertson, Mueller, Harper Funeral Home until his retirement in 1987. He was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Fort Worth and enjoyed bowling. At the time of his death, he was a resident at Lakeside Village in Fort Worth. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002, in Trinity Lutheran Church of Fort Worth. Survivors include his son, David May of Chillicothe, Ohio; grandson; great-grandson of Fort Worth; and sister, Hildegard May of Brenham.

Naomi Fennell Danhaus
A lovely lady recently passed away in a Corpus Christi, Texas hospital of heart failure. She was Naomi Fennell Danhaus, wife of former Brenham resident John H. Danhaus. Her body was returned to dust but her soul is now in heaven. She was raised and attended public schools in Seminole, Okla. where she was employed as a telephone operator. Miss Fennell and Air Force M/Sgt. John H. Danhaus were married Aug. 31, 1957 in Ardmore, Okla. Sgt. Danhaus retired in 1961 and they made Corpus Christi their home. Mr. Danhaus then worked for civil service at the Naval Air Station until 1982. Both parents are deceased. Mrs. Danhaus is survived by one brother, John Fennell of Seminole, Okla.; and three sisters, Mary Manuel of Ada, Okla., Rosa Bolen of Fort Worth and Hellen Earl of Lubbock; and one sister-in-law, Esther Danhaus Wetherington of Brenham. Mrs. Danhaus's remains will be entombed at a later date in the Prairie Lea Cemetery in Brenham. May God keep and love her.

Michael Dale Dyess
Michael Dale Dyess, 20, of Brenham, died Oct. 3, 2002 in Brackenridge Hospital in Austin. Mr. Dyess was born Oct. 1, 1982 in Gladewater, Texas to Phillip and Tina Ashley Dyess. He was educated at Brenham High School. Mary Buerger Schulte
Mary Buerger Schulte, 93, of Brenham, died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002 in Brenham Rest Home. Mary was born April 13, 1909 to Wilhelm and Henrietta (Rosenbaum) Buerger of the Zionsville community of Washington County, Texas and attended Washington County Public School. She was baptized July 4, 1909 at Zion Lutheran Church of Zionsville by Pastor Michael Haag and confirmed April 13, 1924 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church of Sandy Hill by Pastor George Czyrkus. On April 16, 1930 she was married to Charles Schulte Jr. at St. John Lutheran Church of Prairie Hill by Pastor Paul Gogolin. Mary and her husband owned and operated the family grocery store in Clay for 37 years. Survivors are: sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas and Dorothy Schulte and F.C. "Sonny" and Doris Schulte; daughter, Mary Helen Cade, all of Brenham; grandchildren, Darrell Wayne Schulte and wife Liz, Russell J. Schulte and wife Pennee, Michael William Schulte and wife Kaysee and Mark Charles Schulte; and great-grandchildren, Natasha Cornell, Casey Schulte, Derrick Schulte, Sarah Schulte, McKenna Schulte and Keaton Schulte. Mary was preceded in death by her parents; husband; four brothers; three sisters and their spouses; and son-in-law, William P. Cade. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002 at Brenham Memorial Chapel. Funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church of Sandy Hill. Pastor Virgil Pecht will officiate. Burial will follow in Prairie Lea Cemetery. Winkelmann
Erna Lorenz Winkelmann, 88, of Brenham, died Oct. 2, 2002 in Bluebonnet Hills Care Center in Brenham. Mrs. Winkelmann was born July 25, 1914 in the Long Point community of Washington County, Texas to Richard and Meta Glaesmann Lorenz. She was baptized at Zionsville and was confirmed at Berlin. Mrs. Winkelmann attended Berlin and Wonder Hill schools. On Aug. 31, 1942 she was married to Walter Winkelmann in Houston. Mrs. Winkelmann was a member of Eben-Ezer Lutheran Church in Berlin and was a homemaker. Survivors include her brother and sister-in-law, Alvin and Evelyn Lorenz of Brenham; sisters and brother-in-law, Elsie Brennan of Houston, LeViola Maass of Brenham and Ella and Ted Niemann of Houston; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Walter Winkelmann on Oct. 20, 1981; brothers, Melvin Lorenz and Richard Andrew Lorenz; and brothers-in-law, Walter Maass and Ed Brennan. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 6 in Eben-Ezer Lutheran Church in Berlin with Pastor Teresa Davis officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5 in Memorial Oaks Chapel. Her nephews and great-nephews will serve as pallbearers. Adoline Carroll
Adoline Easley Carroll, 88, of Houston, a child of God, passed from this life July 15, 2002, to be with the Lord in her new heavenly home. She was preceded in death by her husband, James V. Carroll Jr., who was raised in Brenham; their daughters, Mary Carroll and Catherine Carroll Harper; her sisters, Ellen Easley, Tom Joyce Cunningham and Nina Price; and brother, Leslie Easley. She is survived by her sister, Sarah Gordon; her son and daughter-in-law, James and Florence Carroll; her grandchildren and their spouses, Clint and Carolyn Harper, Mack Harper, Kate and John Aranda, Patrick Harper, Mary and Jeff Burton, Jamie Carroll and David Carroll; her great-grandchildren, Aaron, Andrew and Cole Harper, Gabriel and Emory Aranda and Luke and Reagan Burton; and her nieces and nephews and their children. Adoline taught fourth grade for many years at St. Anne's Catholic School in Houston. A service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 18, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Brenham, followed by burial at Prairie Lea Cemetery in Brenham. Instead of sending flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the charity of the donor's choice. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Geo. H.
