CHRISTIANSBURG - George Andrew Austin, 76, passed away, Wednesday, June 26, 2002 at the New River Valley Medical Center.
He was a member of the New River Baptist Temple. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served during WW II.
He was a loom fixer with Burlington with 45 years of service.
Survivors include: his wife of 54 years, Ruby H. Austin, Christiansburg; two daughters and sons-in-law, Gladys and David Hubbard, Christiansburg, Barbara and Kenneth Nolen, Floyd; brother, John William Austin, Radford; sister, Annie Taylor, Casper, Wyoming; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral service was held Friday, June 28 at 2:00 p.m. at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford with Reverend Cecil Albano and Reverend Michael Bonds officiating. Interment followed in Sunrise Burial Park in Radford.

ARCHIE EUELL GOAD
WILLIS - Archie Euell Goad, 77, passed away Tuesday, June 25, 2002 at his home.
Survivors include: his wife, Louise Quesenberry Goad, Willis; son, Kermith Lee Goad, Willis, daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Rodney Moxley, Randleman, North Carolina, Linda and Byron Turner, Indian Valley; brother, Berlin Goad, Dugspur, sister, Ava Dove, Christine Mills, Martinsville; grandsons, James E. Cox, Teddy R. Cox, Samuel F. Cox; three great-grandchildren.
Funeral service was held Friday, June 28, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. at Maberry Funeral Home Chapel, Floyd, with Reverend Norman Goad and Reverend S.G. Bolt officiating. Burial followed in the Michell Cemetery, Dugspur.

GROVER KYLE SEMONES
SALEM - Grover Kyle Semones, 81, passed away at the Veterans Medical Center in Salem on June 29, 2002. He was preceded in death by his parents Kyle and Grace Semones and a sister Ethel Adams.
He was a World War II U.S. Army Veteran. He retired from Nelson Roanoke as a Walter Well Driller. He was a member of Old Union Primitive Baptist Church, where he served as deacon as long as he was able to attend.
Surviving is his wife of 61 years, Dorcie Cox Semones; four children, Darell and wife Lois of Vinton, Howard (Mooch) and wife Beth of Salem, Larry and wife Mary of Manheim, Pennsylvania; daughter Sue McDaniel and husband Jack of Salem; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and 1 step-great granddaughter; two brothers, Fred and wife Blanche of Floyd and Hassell and wife Lula of Willis.
Services were held Monday, July 2, 2002 at 2 p.m. at Maberry Funeral Home conducted by Elders Hale Terry and Larry Hollandsworth. Burial followed at Big Sand Cemetery in Indian Valley.
Donations may be made to Old Union Primitive Baptist Church in his memory: C/O Sandra Hollandsworth, 5156 Blue Springs Road, Hiwassee, VA 24347.

LOUISE RIDINGER TOLBERT
RADFORD - Louise Ridinger Tolbert, 97, passed away Wednesday, June 26, 2002 at the Radford Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was formerly of New Castle and Floyd.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Pattie Jett Ridinger, husband, Wyatt Tolbert, brothers, Claude, Jimmy and Thornton Ridinger, sisters, Ann David and Sadie Layman, and step-son, Palmer Tolbert. She was a member of New Castle United Methodist Church.
Survivors are: step-daughters, Thelma Keith, Floyd, Bernice Peterman, Christiansburg, Helen Rutrough, Salem; step-sons, Glen Tolbert, Husten Tolbert, Ward Tolbert, Bassett; several nieces and nephews.
Graveside service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 29 at Jacksonville Cemetery with Reverend Emory Tarpley officiating. Maberry Funeral Home, Floyd, handled arrangements. In lieu of memorials, please arrange a visit to someone in a nursing home or an elderly person.
The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the staff of Radford Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and her caretakers including Mrs. Bernice Peterman for their loving care.

FREEDA WEEKS AKERS
CHECK - Freeda Weeks Akers, 72, passed away Saturday, July 27, 2002 in a Lynchburg Nursing Home. She was the widow of Marlin Akers.
Survivors include: a grandson, Larry Akers, Floyd; great-grandson, Christian Lee Akers, Floyd; niece, Betty Kingey; nephew, Raymond E. Webb, Roanoke.
Graveside service was held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 31, 2002 at Pleasant Valley Cemetery with Reverend Roy Turpin officiating. Maberry Funeral Home, Floyd, in charge of arrangements.

MARY AKERS DUNCAN
RICHMOND - Mary Akers Duncan, 78, widow of Cecil A. Duncan, died Thursday, July 25, 2002.
She is survived by two sons, Jeff B. Duncan and wife, Betty S. Duncan of Rockville and John A. Duncan and wife, Patricia A. Duncan of Floyd; one daughter, Nancy D. Ciandella and husband, Thomas L. Ciandella, Jr. of Mantua, NJ; four grandchildren, Anne and Amy Duncan, Andy and Lauren Ciandella.
She was the last surviving child of the late Tazewell B. and Lucy H. Akers. She was a member of the Westhampton United Methodist Church in Richmond.
A graveside service was held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, July 29 in Evergreen Burial Park in Roanoke. Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society.

ANTHONY WAYNE GRIGGS
FLOYD - Anthony (Andy) Wayne Griggs, 24, passed away Wednesday evening, July 24, 2002 after a motorcycle accident.
He was born to Shirly Griggs and Buddy (deceased) on January 5, 1978 in Pearisburg. He graduated from Floyd County High School in 1997 and worked at different jobs until he went to his real love of truck driving. After marriage to Jenapher Hilton Giggs, he drove for C.R. England and Tree Transport until October 2001. He then drove for S.R. Goff until his accident. He was preceded in death by his father.
He is survived by: his wife, Jenapher and daughter Cheyenne of Floyd, and another child is expected; his mother, Shirly Griggs of Floyd; one brother and sister-in-law, Patrick and Vickie Griggs of Floyd; several aunts and uncles also survive.
Funeral service was conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, July 28, at Wood Funeral Home in Floyd with Reverend Stanley Hawkins officiating. Interment at Zion Lutheran Church cemetery. Donations may be made to his wife and daughter. Wood Funeral Home, Floyd, handled arrangements.

ROY WILMER HALLMAN
WILLIS - Roy Wilmer Hallman, 65, passed away Wednesday, July 24, 2002 at his home.
Survivors include: one brother and sister-in-law, Daniel B. and Ireta Hallman, Front Royal; two sisters, Charlotte Pavtlowe, Front Royal, Dorothy Nickelson, Front Royal; three nephews; two nieces; special friends, Faye Bolt, Floyd, Ilene McGrady, Laurel Fork, Michell and Jonathan Mashburn, Willis; very special friend, Pete Bolt, Willis.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m on Friday, July 26, 2002 at Lighthouse Baptist Church with Reverend J.C. Willard officiating. Burial was in Burnette-White Cemetery, Laurel Fork.

GENE AMOS SETLIFF
FERRUM - Gene Amos Setliff, 53, died Saturday morning at Carillion Franklin County Hospital. He was born on November 16, 1948 in Patrick County to the late Amos and Christine Rakes Setliff. He was a former warehouse manager for Blue Ridge Industries, a member of Thomasson Heights Baptist Church, and served in the U.S. Army.
Surviving are: his wife, Carol Boyd Setliff, Ferrum, one brother, Richard Setliff, Bassett; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral service was held Monday, July 29, 2002 at 11 a.m. at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Stuart with Reverends Bobby Rakes and Joseph "Doby" Salmons officiating.
Burial followed in the Union Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery with full military rites by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard. Memorials may be made to Cherrystone Youth Camp, P.O. Box 176, Collinsville, VA 24078.

GILBERT CALVIN UNDERWOOD
BASSETT - Gilbert Calvin Underwood, 75, died Sunday, July 28, 2002 at his home of an apparent heart attack. He was born on February 24, 1927 in Floyd County to the late Claude Swanson Underwood and the late Sally Hylton Underwood.
He was employed by Bassett Furniture Company (Old town) and Bassett Table Compamy for 53 years. He was a member of the Bassett Church of the Brethren since 1951 where he was a former usher and member of Mens Fellowship. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was an avid gardener and cattleman.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, Manley V. (Tom) Underwood and two sisters, Ollie Thomas and Zella Compton.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Estelle Roberson Underwood of the home; one daughter, Mrs. Harvey (Darlene U.) Roop of Patrick Springs; two sons, Gerald C. Underwood of Ridgeway, and Doyle L. and wife Mary Grace Underwood of Woolwine; three sisters, Ruby Agnew of Floyd, Ava Wells of Riner and Larma Harmon of Martinsville; four grandchildren and one step-grandson.
Funeral service was held Wednesday, July 31, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. at Bassett Church of the Brethren with the Reverend Gary Edwards and Reverend William Stovall officiating. Interment followed in Roselawn Burial Park.
Memorials may be made to Bassett Church of the Brethren Memorial Fund, 34 Brethren Drive, Bassett, VA 24055.

MARTINSVILLE - Billy Shelton Akers, 62, passed away Friday, January 18, 2002 at his home on Fisher Farm Road. He was a native of Floyd.
Surviving are: nieces and nephews, Brenda Hale, Evelyn Davis, Sandra Adams and Mark McBride, all of Martinsville, Karlene Fulton and Gloria Compton of Ridgeway; R.L. McBride of Stuart, Nadine Cox of Georgia, Kenneth Hale of Michigan, and Sharon Kay Joseph of Florida.
Graveside service was held Tuesday, January 22, 2002 at the Vest Cemetery with Mr. Mitchell Floyd officiating.

WILLIAM WAYNE BARNARD
MEADOWS OF DAN - William Wayne Barnard, 76, of Hurricane Ridge Road, died Tuesday, January 22, 2002 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born in Patrick County on August 17, 1925 to the late Alvin M. Barnard and the late Ettie Terry Barnard. He served in the Army/Air Corps during World War II. He lived in Medford, New Jersey for 20 years, and moved back to his hometown where he spent the last 14 years. He was a member of the Gideons, and of Meadows of Dan Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher.
He is survived by: his wife, Nadene Cochran Barnard, of the home; three daughters, Mrs. Donald (Carolyn) Campbell, Middlebrook, Mrs. Charles (Sharon) Poinsett, Medford, New Jersey, Mrs. Karl (Teresa) Volb, Clementon, New Jersey; two sons, Philip Barnard, Medford, New Jersey, Thomas Barnard, Coconut Creek, Florida; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; four sisters, Hazel Helms, Inez Hylton and Vera Seigler, all of Meadows of Dan, and Jessie Morrison, Fairfax.
Funeral service will be held Friday, January 25, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. at Meadows of Dan Baptist Church with Reverend Dale Shively officiating. FLOYD - Lenza Marshall Cook, 59, passed away Friday, January 18, 2002. He was co-owner of Engleby Electric Company of Roanoke. Lenza was a member of the Cooper Memorial Baptist Church in Pineville, West Virginia.
He was a member of Floyd Masonic Lodge #329 A.F. & A.M. He was preceded in death by a son, Lenza Michael Cook, father, Ward L. Cook, and brother Danny R. Cook.

CHECK - Carol Elizabeth Sawicki Georgeff, 50, beloved wife of 31 years, passed away suddenly Thursday, January 17, 2002 in Roanoke.
She was a dedicated Christian, loving mother and was a member of New Haven Baptist Church, Carol was a hard worker at Trigon Blue Cross Blue Shield, where she was a long time employee.

She was a former employee of Family Discount Store in Floyd.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Milton Meador, Jr.

CECIL C. QUESENBERRY
MARYLAND - Cecil C. Quesenberry, 78, of Westminster, died Wednesday afternoon, January 9, 2002, at his residence, after an extended illness. Born June 21, 1923, in Virginia, he is the son of the late Homer and Lucy Quesenberry. He was the husband of Sylvia Coburn Quesenberry, his wife of 54 years.
Before retiring, he worked at Congoleum in Finksburg for 42 years.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of American Legion Carroll Post No. 31 and a former member of VFW Post No. 467.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are: daughters and sons-in-law, Diane C. and Tom Morgan of Wellsburg, West Virginia, Deborah and Larry Bixler of Hanover, Pennsylvania; daughter, Karen Easterday of Wellsburg; son and daughter-in-law, Harold W. and Donna Quesenberry of Hanover, Pennsylvania; son, Leon, Galax; sister, Evie Phillips, Willis; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and 15 step grandchildren; daughter, Donna Jean Quesenberry; granddaughters, Laura Rucker and Jessica Kock; four brothers and three sisters predeceased him.
Funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 12, at the Fletcher Funeral Home, 254 E. Main Street, Westminster, with the Reverend Richard Grammer, of the Church of the Open Door, officiating.
Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Gardens.

FLOYD - Edith Gallimore Quesenberry, 84, passed away Monday, January 21, 2002 in Skyline Manor Nursing Home. She was a member of Beaver Creek Church of the Brethren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Villie Quesenberry; parents Cordell and Stella Gallimore; brother, Vinton Gallimore.
She is survived by: one son and daughter-in-law, Hebron and Doris Quesenberry, Floyd; two daughters and sons-in-law, Martha and Jimmy Mannon, Diane and Wayne Mannon, both of Floyd; six grandchildren, Judy and Mark Proctor, Wanda and Wayne Gardner, Melissa (Lisa) and Scott Thompson, all of Floyd, Tammy and Jeff Williams, Richmond, Denise Mannon, Greensboro, Tina and Terry Osborne, Floyd; nine great grandchildren; three brothers and four sisters-in-law, L.A. and Cornelia Gallimore, Charles and Oneida Gallimore, Roger and Erma Jean Gallimore, Irene Gallimore; four sisters and one brother-in-law, Roxie Boyd, Arnie Simpkins, Dovie Quesenberry, Isabel and Lewis Shelor.

RICHMOND - Booker Byrd Glass, 75, died at home, Saturday, April 20, 2002. He was preceded in death by one son, Steven F. Glass, eight brothers and one sister.
He is survived by: his loving wife, Louise G. Glass, Richmond; two daughters, Bonnie G. Alderman and Carol G. Starke; four granddaughters and a great-grandson; one sister, Virginia G. Fore, Lynchburg; two brothers, Thornton S. Glass, Vinton, and Joe Glass, Lynchburg; and numerous extended family members including Nancy G. Mannon, Floyd. He was a devoted member of Hatcher Memorial Baptist Church for 44 years and served as a deacon and church leader.
Funeral service was held Tuesday, April 23, at Hatcher Memorial Baptist Church, with interment in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Bliley Funeral Home handled arrangements.

ROSE MARIE KEYES
INDIAN VALLEY - Rose Marie Keyes, 45, passed away Friday, April 26, 2002 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Survivors include: her husband, Danny R. Keyes, Indian Valley; three daughters, Cindy Keyes, Heannie Keyes, Marie Phillips, Indian Valley; two sons, Freddie Keyes, Danny L. Keyes, Indian Valley; father and stepmother, Robert and Merlin Cox, Geismar, LA; three sisters, Carolyn Agee, Bowling Green, KY; Betty Sue Mathis, Adel, GA; one brother, Bobby Wayne Cox, Atlanta, GA; two grandchildren.
Graveside service was held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, April 28, 2002 at Willis Cemetery with Reverend Cecil Brown officiating. Arrangements were handled by Maberry Funeral Home, Floyd.

FREDA PARKHURST MITCHELL
CHATTANOOGA, Tennessee - Freda Parkhurst Mitchell, 77, passed away Thursday, April 18, 2002 in the hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, John C. Mitchell, Jr. She was a member of Middle Valley Church of Christ, and former member of Brainerd Church of Christ and Ridgedale Church of Christ.
Survivors include: two sons, John C. Mitchell III, Soddy-Daisy, Tennessee, Bill Mitchell, Knoxville, Tennessee; daughter, Janice M. Akens, Chattanooga, Tennessee; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; numerous nephews and nieces, including Nancy G. Mannon, Floyd.
Funeral service was held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 20, 2002 at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, with Gene Arnold officiating.
Interment was in Forest Hills Cemetery, Tennessee. Chattanooga Funeral Home handled arrangements.
