Gladys Gardner
Died On April 4, 2001
Gladys Irene Gardner, 96, Nevada, MO, passed away Wednesday morning, April 4, 2001, at Christian Health Care in Nevada following a lengthy illness. She was born March 6, 1905, in Centralia, MO, to Percy A. Patton and Cora L. Hill Patton. She married George N. Gardner on November 11, 1937, in Chanute, KS. He preceded her in death on October 26, 1950. Mrs. Gardner worked for Southwestern Bell for 35 years. She spent most of her life in Southeast Kansas. In 1990, she moved to this area and spent the remainder of her life here. Survivors include six nieces, Ann DePoy, Pittsburg, KS, Winnie Cook, Prairie Village, KS, Phyllis Stites, Parkville, MO, Marjorie Whitmire, and Jackie Hardy, both of Sheldon, MO, and Billie Hultin, Sarasota, FL; three nephews, Doug Patton, Georgia, Jim Ross, Longview, TX, and Dell Dienst, Albuquerque, NM. Committal services will be Thursday, April 12, 2001, at 10:30 a.m. at Memorial Park Cemetery, Chanute, KS. Local arrangements are by Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO.

Helen "Ruth" "Ewing" Garcia
Died On September 25, 2001
Helen Ruth Ewing Garcia, 83, passed away at her home in Fresno, CA, following an illness of several years. She was born July 7, 1918 in Creighton, MO. Mrs. Garcia lived most of her life in Fresno, CA. Locally, she is survived by one sister, Elizabeth Houk, Bronaugh, MO. Graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday, October 1, 2001, at Newton Burial Park in Nevada with Rev. Earl Wood officiating. Friends may call Sunday afternoon and until 11:00 a.m. Monday at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO.

Helen "Ruth" "Ewing" Garcia
Died On September 25, 2001
Helen was the oldest of five Ewing children, born July 7, 1918 in Creighton, Cass County, Missouri to James Upton Ewing and Ora Mae (Kepner) Ewing. She entered Eternal Life in Heaven with our Heavenly Father on September 25, 2001, Fresno, California. She was a precious, caring, loving Mother, Wife, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, Daughter, Sister, Aunt, Cousin, Teacher, Missionary, Prayer Warrior, Basketball Player, Mentor, Faithful Servant, Friends, and talented Poet. She graduated from High School in Creighton, Missouri in 1936. Helen attended Central Missouri State Teacher’s College (currently Central Missouri University), Warrensburg, Missouri and then taught Elementary School in Henry County, Missouri for two years. She traveled to California to visit her high school sweetheart Emmet Louis Crouse who was working on the Southern-Pacific Railroad; she and Emmet were married in Mojave, California on May 13, 1938. Emmet’s death occurred in Van, Texas in 1965. Helen and Emmet had three sons, who survive her: Richard James Crouse, who resides with his wife, Carolyn, and Family in Lake Tahoe, California; Stephen Paul Crouse, who resides with his Family in Weaverville, California. (Stephen grew up in Bronaugh and graduated from Bronaugh High School in 1965 along with his cousin, John Houk, (Helen’s nephew), Bronaugh, MO); and David Lee Crouse, who resides with his wife, Sue, and Family in Norfolk, Virginia. Helen had a passion for Missionary work and attended Missionary camp and training for New Tribes Mission near Chico, California. She further increased her training at Bible Study Classes at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, Illinois. Helen also worked for the American Hereford Association in Kansas City, Missouri. Later she married Jesse Garcia in 1971; Jesse passed away in 1987. Using the talents and gifts that God gave her, she distinguished herself as a prolific Poet, sharing the Good News of Salvation through the Lord Jesus Christ with others. She also has been a blessing in the lives of so many by her gifts as a Teacher and Mentor including activities at the Fresno Union Mission, and the Child Evangelism Fellowship of Fresno, California. Helen’s youngest sister and brother proceeded her in death: Hallie Louise (Ewing) Andras of Springfield, Ohio; James Paul Ewing, of Bronaugh, Missouri, who was killed in action during World War II in Germany. She is survived by a brother and sister: Elizabeth Frances (Ewing) Houk, Bronaugh, Missouri; and Scott Kepner Ewing and wife, Janet, in Lansing, Michigan. Memorial services were held Friday, September 28, 2001, in Fresno, California. Graveside praise and worship services were held at Newton Burial Park, Nevada, Missouri, on Monday, October 2, 2001. Local arrangements were by Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, Missouri. Helen will be greatly missed! Hallelujah! She is in Heaven now!

Betty Gabbard
Died On October 5, 2001
Betty Katherine Gabbard, 68, Sheldon, MO, passed away Friday night, October 5, 2001, at her daughter’s home in Sheldon following a lengthy illness. She was born July 14, 1933, in Hazzard County, KY, to Craig Steele and Sarah Tamara Clark Steele. Ms. Gabbard was a member of the Worldwide Church of God. Survivors include four sons, Timothy Wilder, Montana, Steven Gabbard, Louisville, KY, Daniel Gabbard, Jefferson City, IN, and Lance Gabbard, Monett, MO; one daughter, Judith Schmidt, Sheldon, MO; 13 granddaughters; three grandsons; two brothers, Curtis Steel of Ohio, and Joe Steele, of Indiana; five sisters, Judy Freeman, Drexel, MO, June of Indiana, Joan of Ohio, Janet King of Indianna, and Joyce of Kentucky, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Joseph Wilder, and one brother, Kenneth Steele. No services are planned. Arrangements are by Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO.

Flossie Frost
Died On September 22, 2001
Flossie Camden "Swiney" Frost, the daughter of Walter and Ella Holmes Camden was born March 3, 1910 in Reynolds County, Missouri and departed this life September 22, 2001 at the age of 91 at the Moore-Few Care Center. Flossie grew up and attended school in the rural area of Reynolds County, MO. In 1924, Flossie Camden was united in marriage to Charles Thurman Swiney in Reynolds County, Missouri and to this union six children were born. Four children preceded her in death, Carl in infancy, June at age 17 months, Edgar at age 25 and Harold at age 57. She was preceded in death by her husband Charles in 1968, two brothers, Ray and Haskel and two sisters, Frona and Fannie. She was also preceded in death by two grandchildren, Scott Swiney and Janice Coffman. Survivors include two children, Charles Swiney and Glenna Johnson, both of Nevada, MO.; three sisters, Lola Kowalski of Nevada,MO, Stella Smith of Van Buren, MO and Mabel Lane of Pensacola, Florida. Eighteen grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews also survive. On June 3, 1966 in Weir, Kansas, Flossie was united in marriage to Cyrus Russel Frost and they moved to Joplin, MO, living there until 1983. Mr. Frost preceded her in death March 19, 1983 after a long illness. Flossie moved to Nevada, MO at this time to be close to her family. Mr. and Mrs. Frost were both baptized by her son Pastor Charles Swiney in the name of Jesus in the summer of 1975, each remaining true to the Lord until their passing. Flossie was a faithful reader of the Bible on a daily basis as long as her eyes permitted, the balance she hid in her heart. Mrs. Frost made her home in Nevada, MO with her daughter Glenna Johnson until moving to the Moore-Few Care Center in February 2001 where her younger sister also lives. They spent many hours together sharing meals and love for each other. Flossie loved her family, always had a kind word and a gentle touch for the younger ones and encouragement for the older ones. She was the "hub" of the family and will be missed and honored with kind remembrance and is now safe in heaven and free from the pain and suffering. Funeral services will be Tuesday September 25, 2001 at 10:30 a.m. at the Evergreen Memorial Chapel with Pastor Rod Hillhouse and Mr. Charles Swiney officiating. Interment will follow in the Osborne Memorial Cemetery in Joplin, Missouri. Friends may call at the Evergreen Memorial Chapel after 12 noon on Monday and the family will receive friends on Monday from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Moore-Few Care Center in care of the Evergreen Memorial Chapel, P.O. Box 894, Nevada, MO 64772.

Elsie Frost

Elsie L. Frost, 91, Nevada, MO, passed away Thursday morning, February 22, 2001, at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin, MO, following a brief illness. She was born February 9, 1910, in Metz, MO, to Dillon Hutchinson and Dora Riston Hutchinson. She married Thomas James Frost on January 27, 1933 in Butler, MO, and he preceded her in death on February 13, 1979. Mrs. Frost was born and raised in the Metz area and spent her entire lifetime here. She was a member of the Metz Christian Church. She was a homemaker. Survivors include two nephews, Jim Frost, Appleton City, MO, and Gene Frost, Kansas City, MO; two nieces, Bonnie Heiserman, Appleton City, MO, and Patty Markey, Fontana, CA, and one sister-in-law, Naomi Frost, Kansas City, MO. Funeral services will be Saturday, February 24, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO, with John Nichols officiating. . Interment will follow in Balltown Cemetery, Horton, MO. Sherrie Fox
Died On October 23, 2001
Sherrie Lynn Fox, 33, Nevada, MO, died suddenly on Tuesday, October 23, 2001, at her home in Nevada. She was born December 16, 1967, in Independence, MO, to James F. Lutes and P. Sue Philbrick Lutes. Sherrie grew up in Nevada and graduated from Nevada High School in 1986. She then graduated from Missouri Southern College in Joplin, MO, with a Batchelor of Science Degree. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church. Sherrie worked for seven years in the corporation headquarters as an Administrative Assistant for Platinum Technology, a computer technology firm, in Oakbrook, IL. She had lived in Nevada the past six months. Survivors include her mother, Sue Lutes, Nevada, MO; father, Jim Lutes, Fayetteville, AR; grandmother, Theda Fraley, Nevada, MO, and several aunts, uncles, & cousins. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 27, 2001, at the First Presbyterian Church, Nevada, with Rev. Greg Ferree officiating. A committal service will follow in Moore Cemetery. Friends may call now and until 10:00 a.m. at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO. Gladys Forgey
Died On July 27, 2001
Gladys Forgey, age 81 of Nevada, formerly of Sheldon, passed away on Friday evening at the Moore-Few Care Center in Nevada following a brief illness. She was born on August 12, 1919 in Comanche, Oklahoma to Frank Pitts and Birdie Fisher Pitts. She was married to Leonard Forgey on November 25, 1939 in Lamar, MO. He preceded her in death in 1996. Gladys came to Vernon County at a young age where she has lived ever since. She and Leonard farmed in the Bronaugh and Sheldon areas for many years. They retired to there home in Sheldon in the late 1950’s. Gladys is survived by her sister Vanita Pitts, Lahabra, CA, one brother, Gano Douglas, Sun City, CA, a nephew Dale Pitts and his wife Shelly, Nevada, and numerous other nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband Leonard, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Orie Pitts and Orb Douglas. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 31, 2001 at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada with John Nichols officiating. Interment will follow at Moore Cemetery in Nevada. Friends may call from now until the hour of service at the funeral home.

Gene Ford
Died On June 9, 2001
Gene Ford, 63, Rural Sheldon, MO passed away Saturday afternoon, June 9, 2001 at his residence following an illness of several months. He was born June 22, 1937 in Lilbourn, MO to the late Elzia Thomas Ford and Emma Edna Taylor Ford. He was married September 28, 1966 in Miami, OK to Julia Anne Cook Ford. She survives of the home. Mr. Ford, and his family, moved to the Nevada area in 1969 and lived the remainder of his lifetime here. He was a truck driver his entire working life. He enjoyed his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Along with his wife Julia, survivors include two sons, Marvin Ford, Sheldon, MO, Darvin Ford, Nevada, MO; two daughters, Kathy Nance, Nevada, MO, Tammy Larimore, El Dorado Springs, MO; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; one brother, James E. Ford, Hutchinson, KS; two sisters, Ruth Paulette Mendenhall, Plevna, KS, Ann Schwabaur, Hutchinson, KS. Along with his parents, two brothers preceded him in death. Friends may call between noon Monday and 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO. Family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday evening between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.

Martha Floyd
Died On August 26, 2001
Martha Ann Floyd, 69, Phoenix, AZ, formerly of Nevada, MO, passed away Sunday, August 26, 2001, at John C. Lincoln Hospital in Phoenix, AZ, following a brief illness. She was born May 29, 1932, in Milo, MO, to Charles Virgil Hanson and Zeola Beulah Smith Hanson. She married Howard LaVerne Floyd on October 7, 1949, in Milo, MO. He preceded her in death on June 12, 1995. Mrs. Floyd was born and raised in Milo, MO, and graduated at Nevada High School in 1949. She was a Lutheran. She moved to Phoenix, AZ, in 1961 and spent the remainder of her life there. She was a member of the Mary and Martha Club at church and the Garden Club of Phoenix. Survivors include two daughters, Cheryl and Dana Floyd of Phoenix, AZ; one son, Stephen Dale Floyd, Phoenix, AZ, one granddaughter, two great-great-grandchildren, and one brother, Duane Hanson, Harrisonville, MO. Graveside Services will be at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 1, 2001, at Olive Branch Cemetery, Milo, MO, with Rev. Paul Mooney officiating. Friends may call now and until 9:00 a.m. Saturday at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO. Arrangements are by Ferry Funeral Home.

Dottie Fergus

Dottie Fergus, 82, Excelsior Springs, MO, passed away Sunday, November 11, 2001, at Liberty Hospital, Liberty, MO. She was born on April 10, 1919, in Vernon County, MO, to Charlie Quantrell Fergus and Nora Belle Hardin Fergus. Dottie was born and raised in Vernon County and spent much of her younger life here. She has resided in Excelsior Springs, MO, the last 20 years. She is survived by one sister, Leta Dell Cox, Excelsior Springs, MO. Committal services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 24, 2001, at Martin Cemetery, El Dorado Springs, MO, with Buzz Wood officiating. Louella Fellows
Died On September 30, 2001
Louella Ruth Fellows, 74, Nevada, MO, passed away Sunday night, September 30, 2001, at her home in Nevada following a sudden illness. She was born December 10, 1926, in Milo, MO, to Joseph Vernon Eaton and Virginia Pauline Gose Eaton. She married Merl D. Fellows on July 28, 1944, in Ft. Scott, KS, and he preceded her in death on July 25, 2000. Mrs. Fellows was born and raised in Milo and graduated from Nevada High School in 1945. She was a member of the First Christian Church, Nevada, MO. She worked for many years as a cook for Nevada High School. Later Louella worked for nine years as a Medical Records Technician at Nevada State Hospital. She was a member of the B.P.W., the Order of Eastern Star, the Good Neighbors Club in Milo and the Marvin Chapel Cemetery Association. She loved photography and was an active participant in her children and grandchildren’s sporting activities. Survivors include one son, Randy Fellows, Moundville, MO; two daughters, Linda Rodarmel, Bronaugh, MO, and Paula Matherly, of the home; one grandson, Adam Fellows, Pittsburg, KS; three granddaughters, Andrea Fellows, Moundville, MO, Abby Starne, and Amy Rodarmel, both of Bronaugh, MO. She was preceded in death by one sister, Helen Simpson. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 3, 2001, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO. Interment will follow in Marvin Chapel Cemetery, Milo, MO. Richard Fanning
Died On August 29, 2001
Richard Eugene Fanning, 65, Butler, MO, passed away Wednesday night, August 29, 2001, at Bates County Memorial Hospital, Butler, MO, following a brief illness. He was born March 4, 1936, in Lamar, MO, to Jake Fanning and Annie Marie Rice Fanning. Mr. Fanning graduated from Lockwood High School in 1954. He worked on the family farm and entered the U.S. Army in 1958. After the service, he worked in a grocery store in the Kansas City area until his retirement in 1978. Survivors include his mother, Annie Marie Fanning, Lamar, MO; two sisters, Christina Kollmeier, Lockwood, MO, and Helen Cole, Lamar, MO, four nephews, two nieces, and several great-nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his father on August 8, 1989. Graveside services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 1, 2001, at Greenlawn Cemetery, Jasper, MO, with Pastor Griffin officiating. Lynn M. Ewing, Jr.
Died On February 17, 2001
Lynn M. Ewing, Jr., 70, passed away on the 17th day of February 2001 at his home in Nevada, Missouri. He was born in Nevada on November 14, 1930. He was the son of Lynn M. Ewing, Sr. and Margaret Blair Ewing Coffey, and the nephew of James T. Blair, former Governor of Missouri. After graduating from Nevada High School in 1948 he attended Princeton University. He received an AB in 1952 and a Juris Doctor degree in 1954 from the University of Missouri-Columbia, graduating second in his law school class. Mr. Ewing was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Nu fraternity and Order of the Coif. He married Peggy Patton Adams in Memphis, Tennessee on July 10, 1954. Mr. Ewing entered the United States Air Force and served as an attorney in the Judge Advocate General Corps until he returned to Nevada in 1956, where he began the practice of law with the firm of Ewing, Ewing, Ewing, Carter & Wight. He continued to practice law with the Ewing Law Firm until his death. He served as general counsel to Farm & Home Savings Association for 24 years, was a board member for 15 years and served as president for 2 years. He was a life member of the American Bar Association, a member of the Missouri Bar Association and the Vernon County Bar Association, and a fellow of the American College of Mortgage Attorneys. He served on the Missouri Bar Disciplinary Committee. He was admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court in 1961. He was elected to the Missouri House of Representatives in 1959 and served three terms representing the citizens of Vernon and Barton counties. He earned recognition from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch in 1960 as the best first term member of the house, and in 1962 as the member with the greatest growth in leadership. He was appointed by Speaker of the House Tom Graham to serve as the chairman of the Committee of the Whole during the impeachment proceedings against St. Louis Circuit Judge Poelker. He formerly served as the chairperson of the Vernon County Democratic Central Committee. Mr. Ewing was elected to the Nevada City Council in 1967 and served 6 years, including two terms as mayor. He has served on the board of directors of the Nevada Regional Medical Center twice, the Nevada Library Board, as Vice President of the Nevada Chamber of Commerce, on the Nevada Planning Commission and the Nevada Economic Development Corporation. He also served as a board member of Citizens State Bank, Nevada, Missouri. He was a member of the Nevada Rotary Club, and was named citizen of the year in 1975. He received the Paul Harris Fellow Award from Rotary. Mr. Ewing was a member of All Saints' Episcopal Church and served the church as a vestry member, senior warden and lector. Mr. Ewing was appointed by Governor Warren Hearnes to serve on the Missouri Land Reclamation Commission and by Governor Mel Carnahan to serve on the Coordinating Board for Higher Education. He served as the current chairperson of the CBHE. He was a member of the Missouri Academy of Squires. He was a member of the Missouri Savings and Loan Association and the U.S. League of Savings and Loan Associations. He received a Faculty Alumni Award from the University of Missouri. He served on the Missouri Law School Foundation board of directors and was a member of the University of Missouri-Columbia Jefferson Club. He was a charter member of the University of Missouri-Columbia Law Society and Mosaic Society. He is survived by his wife Peggy Adams Ewing of the home; his brother Blair G. Ewing of Silver Spring, Maryland, his daughter Margrace Buckler and her husband Kevin and grandson Morgan Lynn Buckler of Columbia, Missouri; his daughter Melissa Arnold and granddaughter Mary Kaitlin Arnold of Columbia, Missouri; and his son Lynn M. Ewing, III and grandsons Andrew Ross Ewing and Christopher Blair Ewing of Nevada, Missouri. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday February 21, 2001 at the United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mimi Savidge and Rev. Scott Hall officiating. A second service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday February 21, 2001 at All Saints Episcopal Church with the Rev. Mimi Savidge officiating. Interment will follow in the Deepwood Cemetery. Friends may call after 12:00 noon on Monday at Evergreen Memorial Chapel and the family will receive friends Tuesday from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Evergreen Memorial Chapel, Highway 54 at Hickory. Memorials are suggested in his memory to All Saints' Episcopal Church, the Deepwood Cemetery Association or the American Cancer Society, in care of Evergreen Memorial Chapel, P.O. Ann Ephland
Died On February 2, 2001
Ann Irene Ephland, 88, Nevada, MO, passed away early Friday morning, February 2, 2001, at Nevada Regional Medical Center following a short illness. She was born April 29, 1912, at Flat River, MO, (currently known as Park Hill, MO) to John Wesley Watts and Fannie Alberta Miller Watts. She married Clifton H. Ephland on October 23, 1934, in Iola, KS, and he preceded her in death on January 28, 1996. Mrs. Ephland was a member of the Church of Christ, Nevada, MO. She came to Nevada in 1931. She worked 24 years for the R-5 School District in food service retiring as Food Service Director in 1975. Memberships include National Association Retired Federal Employees Auxiliary, National Association Letter Carriers Auxiliary, and Missouri State Food Service Association. Survivors include one daughter, Rita Lentz and husband, Lonnie, Nevada, MO; two sons, Tim Ephland and wife, Nancy, Ft. Worth, TX, David Ephland and wife, Janie, Arlington, TX; three grandchildren, Andrew and Bailey Ephland, Arlington, TX, Erin Ephland, Ft. Worth, TX; two sisters, Iva Ball and Helen Spence, both of Farmington, MO, numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters. Funeral services will be Monday, February 5, 2001, at 3:00 p.m. at Ferry Funeral Home with Minister Taylor Frances officiating. Interment will follow in Newton Burial Park. Darward Elsbury, was born July 15, 1929 in Appleton City, Missouri and passed away February 4, 2001 at Baptist Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee at the age of 71 years, 6 months and 19 days. He was united in marriage to the former Carol J. McNamara April 16, 1954 in Butler, Missouri. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving from 1954 to 1955. Mr. Elsbury was employed as a truck driver for Roadway Express until his retirement in 1989. He was a member of the Donelson View Baptist Church in Nashville, Tennessee. Survivors include his wife, Carol, of the home, two daughters, Deborah Penley of Nashville, Tennessee, Anita Kitchen of Hermitage, Tennessee, one son, Michael Elsbury of Nashville, Tennessee, three brothers, Clarence D. Elsbury of Overland Park, Kansas, Rev. Sterling L. Elsbury of Belton, Missouri, Ernest E. Elsbury of Belton, Missouri, one sister, Anna Mae Bridegan of Belton, Missouri and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and one brother. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday February 8, 2001 at the Sulphur Springs Baptist Church near Dederick, Missouri with Rev. Sterling Elsbury officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Evergreen Memorial Chapel. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until the hour of service at the Sulphur Springs Baptist Church. Betty Elrod
Died On December 28, 2000
Betty June Elrod, 64, Nevada, MO, passed away Thursday morning, December 28, 2000, at her mother’s home in Nevada following a sudden illness. She was born February 7, 1936, to Elmer and Priscilla Opal Ridge. She married Olen Elrod on April 8, 1991, and he survives of the home. In addition to her husband, Olen, she is survived by two daughters, Brenda Darnell, Ottawa, KS, and Sandra Page, Kansas City, KS; her mother, Opal Sanders, Nevada, MO, and one granddaughter. Graveside services will be Tuesday, January 2, 2001, at El Dorado Springs City Cemetery, El Dorado Springs, MO, with John Nichols officiating. Friends may call now and until 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Ferry Funeral Home.

Howard Eisenhouer
Died On August 30, 2001
Howard Elmer Eisenhouer, 94, Uniontown, KS, formerly of Milo, MO, passed away Thursday morning, August 30, 2001, at Mercy Hospital, Ft. Scott, KS. He was born August 30, 1907, in Jerico Springs, MO, to Joseph Braiser Eisenhouer and Fannie Edna Hall Eisenhouer. He married Kathryn Marie Culbertson on November 11, 1932, in Kansas City, MO. She preceded him in death on August 2, 1993. He was born in Cedar County and came to Vernon County at age 14 and spent most of the rest of his life in this area. He made his living as a bird dog trainer and as a farmer. Survivors include one son, Bob Eisenhouer, Cabool, MO; one daughter, Barbara Dare, Uniontown, KS, three grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and one sister, Josephine Schultz, Denham Springs, LA. He was preceded in death by one brother, Elvin Cyle “Bunch” Eisenhouer. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 1, 2001, at Ferry Funeral Home with Rev. Roy Dare officiating. Interment will follow in St. James Cemetery, Milford, MO. Friends may call now and until the hour of service at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Paul Eisenhouer

Paul G. Eisenhouer, 86, Milo, MO passed away Saturday morning, May 26, 2001, at Nevada Regional Medical Center, Nevada, MO following a lengthy illness. He was born August 30, 1914 in Siloam Springs, AR to the late Earnest M Eisenhouer and Della M. Shook Eisenhouer. He was married December 19, 1960 in Lamar, MO to Almeta Leigh Eisenhouer. She preceded him in death September 15, 1964. Mr. Eisenhouer came to this area as a young man and worked as a railroad engineer for the Missouri-Pacific Railroad and in his later years as a carpenter. He was a member of the Sheldon Baptist Church, Sheldon, MO and a past member of the Masonic Lodge and the I.O.O.F. Survivors include one step-daughter, Charlotte Hart, Sheldon, MO; four step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Helen Howerton, Hurland, MO, Lydia Sitton, Oklahoma City, OK. Along with his parents and spouse, one son, John Wagner Eisenhouer, and one sister, Frances Roberts, preceded him in death. Graveside services will be 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at St. James Cemetery, Sheldon, MO with Reverend Don Renken officiating. Friends may call after 9:00 a.m. Monday and until 12:00 noon Tuesday at Beeny-Ferry Funeral Home, Sheldon, MO

Leon Earnest
Died On August 29, 2001
Leon E. Earnest, 81, Nevada, MO, passed away Wednesday morning, August 29, 2001, at Nevada Regional Medical Center following a lengthy illness. He was born March 14, 1920, in Nevada, to Emmett C. Earnest and Avis R. Stucker Earnest. He married Maxine Thompson on January 15, 1948, in Nevada, MO, who survives of the home. Mr. Earnest was born and raised in Nevada. He was a graduate of Nevada High School in 1938. He served in the Army during WW II from 1940-1945 in the Aleutian Islands. He worked as a self-employed plumbing and heating contractor his entire life. His memberships include the Plumbing and Pipe Fitters Union, the VFW Post #2175, Nevada, and an honorary member of the Bushwhacker Museum. He was also an avid outdoorsman. Survivors in addition to his wife, Maxine, include two sons, Jime Earnest and wife, Maggie, Nevada, MO, and Doug Earnest and wife, Cheri, Freeman, MO; one daughter, Suzanne Norton and husband, Glennon, Nevada; two grandchildren, Todd and Emily Earnest, Nevada, MO; one brother, Elson Earnest, Nevada, MO; one sister, Ardell Hastings, Westminster, CO, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, August 31, 2001, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO, with John Nichols officiating. Interment will follow in Newton Burial Park. Friends may call now and until the hour of service. The family receives friends Friday, 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the WW II Memorial Fund.

Cora Lucille Duvall

Cora Lucille Duvall, 84, Sheldon, MO, passed away suddenly Thursday night, June 21, 2001, at Nevada Regional Medical Center, Nevada. She was born February 26, 1917, in Nevada, MO, to John Lee Scifers and Mytrle Irene Ellington Scifers. She married Armand Thomas Duvall in St. Louis, MO, on March 29, 1941, and he preceded her in death on April 18, 1981. Mrs. Duvall was born and raised in Nevada, but graduated from Carthage High School. She spent the majority of her adult life in Kansas City and moved back to this area in 1973. She was a member of the All Saints Episcopal Church. She worked for a number of years at Nevada State Hospital and was also a homemaker. Survivors include three sons, Tom Duvall, Shawnee, KS, Ron Duvall, Kansas City, MO, and Kevin Duvall, Gladstone, MO; two daughters, Shirley Brown, Olathe, KS, and Bobbie Lawler, Nevada, MO; eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and one nephew, John Robert Scifers, of the home. In addition to her husband, Armand, she was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Eugene Scifers, and one sister, Rosalee McGrath. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 26, 2001, at the All Saints Episcopal Church, Nevada, with Rev. Mimi Savidge officiating. Interment will follow in Sheldon Cemetery, Sheldon, MO. Friends may call now and until 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO. The family receives friends Monday, June 25, 2001, 7:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the All Saints Episcopal Church, Nevada, MO.

William Duncan
Died On July 24, 2001
William Joseph Duncan, 70, Nevada, MO, passed away suddenly Tuesday morning, July 24, 2001, at Milo, MO. He was born December 8, 1930, in Nevada, MO, to Thelmo Joseph Duncan and Mary Margaret McPheeters Duncan. Mr. Duncan graduated from Nevada High School in 1948. He was a Baptist. He joined the Bricklayers Union in 1949. Then he entered the U.S. Air Force in 1951 and served for four years in the Air Force where he received his aviation training. He was a Crew Chief/Mechanic B Class. After the service he ran a successful crop dusting business for several years in the state of Texas. He returned to Nevada in 1958 and worked as a bricklayer until his retirement in 1994. He was a member and past president of the Bricklayers Union Local #6 and a member of the Elks Lodge #564, Nevada, MO. Survivors include two sons, Monty Duncan, Seneca, MO, and James Griffith, Greenbrier, AR; one daughter, Valerie Kindred, Dallas, TX; three stepsons, Terry and Robert Lawson, both of Nevada, MO, and John Watts, Nevada, MO; one stepdaughter, Tina Groves, Nevada, MO; two grandchildren, ten step-grandchildren; two brothers, Darrell Duncan, Nevada, MO, and Vernon Duncan, Sedalia, MO, and companion of 30 years, Dianna Duncan, of the home. He was preceded in death by his parents. Memorials services will be announced at a later date by Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO.

Letha Duncan
Died On December 7, 2001
Letha Fern Duncan, 86, passed away Friday morning, December 7, 2001, at St. Francis Medical Center, Topeka, KS, following an illness of several months. She was born May 25, 1915, in Nevada, MO, to Jesse John King and Ada Mae Burnworth King. She married Carl Thomas Duncan on March 6, 1945, in Joplin, MO, and he preceded her in death on September 9, 1976. Mrs. Duncan was born and raised in Nevada. She was a graduate of Nevada High School in 1936. She lived in Nevada her whole life until moving to Topeka in 1976 where she lived the remainder of her life. Survivors include one daughter, Karen Jeffries, Topeka, KS; one sister, Hazel Hackett, Nevada, MO, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sons, William S. and Paul W. Duncan; two sisters, Marie Bunn and Blanche Spencer, and two brothers, Virgil and Ivan King. Following cremation, private committal services will be held at Moore Cemetery, Nevada, MO. Arrangements are by Ferry Funeral Home.
