Louisville businessman Kleinman dies at 89
Family sold furs, shoes for decades
Reuben "Bob" Kleinman, a third-generation furrier who owned one of Louisville's oldest family-owned businesses until he retired in 2001, died yesterday at his home. He was 89.
Kleinman's Furriers operated in downtown Louisville for 71 years. It was founded in 1919 by his father, Hyman Kleinman, an immigrant whose father was a furrier in Russia. The family had four generations in the fur business for more than 100 years.
Bob Kleinman began working in the family store when he was 15 years old. As the owner, his business philosophy was to greet every customer within 15 minutes, make every effort to please customers and to "tell it like it is."
The furriers' last downtown location was on Chestnut Street near Fourth Avenue in a building that was recently demolished.
Kleinman once recalled Mae West as one of the more interesting customers he had met at that location, which was next door to the old Rialto theater. West once purchased three silver fox scarves when she was doing vaudeville at the Rialto. She wore all three draped over her shoulders at the same time, he said.
In 1950, the company added specialty shoes, Kleinman's Living Shoes, to its retail business. The handmade shoes were created from plaster casts of customers' feet.
Eventually the business had such a respected reputation among orthopedic surgeons and physicians that customers were being referred from 22 states in 1991. At the time, the price of the shoes began at $375 a pair, and at times, the shoe business outperformed the fur business.
The company moved to the Forum shopping center on Hurstbourne Parkway in 1990.
When Bob Kleinman retired, he sold the company to Day Furriers, although two of his children continued to operate the store.
