John H. Gray
OAK HILL -- John H. "Harry" Gray, 80, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998, in an Oak Hill medical center following a short illness.
Born Aug. 1, 1917, at Thurmond, he was the son of the late Comer and Grace Gertrude Gray.
Mr. Gray worked as a bank employee and officer for Merchants and Miners National Bank of Oak Hill, having retired in 1970.
He was a member of the Oak Hill United Methodist Church, a 50-year member of the Oak Hill Lodge No. 120 AF and AM, and a former member of the Oak Hill Lions Club.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Madelon Cooper Gray.
Survivors include a daughter, Harriette Gray Saunders and her husband, Samuel P.G., of Richmond, Va.; a son, John S. Gray and his wife, Margaret M., of West Palm Beach, Fla.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church, Oak Hill, with the Rev. James Shepherd officiating. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

NIMITZ -- Eliza Pack Kochy, 91, died 12:33 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998, in a Hinton hospital following a long illness.
Born Nov. 13, 1906, in Summers County, she was the daughter of the late Oliver C. and Nota Jane Lilly Harvey.
Mrs. Kochy was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church and was a retired nurse.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Silva J. Pack in 1941; her second husband, Charles Kochy in 1996; a son, Danny Pack in 1989; two brothers, John L. and Champ Harvey; and three sisters, Hazel Lilly, Opal Vest, and Clarice Lilly.
Survivors include four daughters, Irene Sizemore of Nimitz, Nina Lloyd of Paradise, Calif., Clarice Farley of Phelan, Calif., and Betty Jane (Creacky) Barnish of Hampstead, N.C.; 19 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; and 43 great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Little Bluestone Primitive Baptist Church with Elder David Lilly officiating. Burial will follow in the William Vest Cemetery, Streeter.

TALCOTT -- Kenneth Wayne Martin Sr., 61, died 7:18 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998, at his home following a long illness.
Born July 4, 1937, in Wayne County, N.C., he was the son of the late John F. and Octavia Goff Martin.
Mr. Martin was a carpenter and a member of the Alderson Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Diana Kincaid Martin; four sons, Kenneth Wayne Martin Jr. of Madams Creek, Tommy Adkins of Talcott, George Wayne Martin of Raleigh, N.C., and John Martin of Fayetteville, N.C.; four daughters, Dorothy Cook of Richmond, Va., Teresa Martin of Raleigh, N.C., Shelia Adkins Bennett of Hinton, and Prinzie Nicholl of Serverna Park, Md.; a brother, Leroy Martin of LaGrange, N.C.; 14 grandchildren.

Dennie E. Toney
Dennie Earl Toney, 64, of Beckley, died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, in a Cleveland, hospital following a long illness.
Born Jan. 13, 1934, at Mabscott, he was the son of Nettie Carrie Massey Newsom of Kilsyth and the late Linus Marshall Toney.
Mr. Toney was a retired miner from Eastern Associated Coal Company in September of 1985, as foreman from Harris No. 1 and 2 in Boone County. He was a member of the Jon A. McBride Composite Squadron, No. 47099, Beckley. He was of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Lee Toney; a sister, Thelma Geraldine Toney Lamarr; and his stepfather, William C. Newsom.
Other survivors include his wife, Shirley Gay Blackburn Toney; two daughters, Deborah Louise Toney-Lyons and her husband, William F., of Crab Orchard, and Denise Darlene Toney-Allen and her husband, Jack A., of Bradley; a son, Nick Lee Toney and his wife, Elaine, of Prosperity; four grandchildren, Kristen Dawn Kasserman and Mary Ann Lyons, both of Crab Orchard, and Samantha Nichole Allen and Ashlie Renee Allen, both of Bradley; and two halfbrothers, Paul Newsom of Youngstown, Ohio, and John Newsom of Beckley.
Graveside rites will be 2 p.m. Friday at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley, with the Rev. Robert H. Doan officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

RAINELLE -- Raymond Lester Bennett, 66, of 317 Ohio Ave., died Monday, Nov. 30, 1998, at his home following a short illness.
Born May 16, 1932, at Hinton, he was the son of the late Joseph H. and Addie Graham Bennett.
Mr. Bennett was a retired machinist for the C&O Railway Company, having been employed for 30 years. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Railway Machinists, and was of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Drema Bovine Bennett on May 9, 1998; a son, Raymond L. Bennett; three brothers, Richard, Daniel, and Thomas Bennett; and two sisters, Ethel and Pauline Miller.
Survivors include a brother, Robert R. Bennett and his wife, Norma, of Alderson; four sisters, Thelma Graham and Mrs. Harold (Louise) Ayers, both of Richmond, Va., and Mrs. Robert (Janice) Mann, and Thelma Graham, both of Hinton.
Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel, Hinton, with Harry Pilkington officiating. Burial will follow in Greenbrier Burial Park, Hinton.

BUD -- Mary Beatrice Lusk Burnecke, 66, died Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness.
Born Sept. 14, 1932, at Bud, she was the daughter of Powell Lusk of Cabin Creek, and the late Edna Lester Lusk.
Mrs. Burnecke was a lifelong resident of Bud Mountain, a housewife, and a member of the Guyandotte Baptist Church, Bud.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frankie Burnecke; a daughter, Christine Faulkner; a son, Leonard Thomas; a granddaughter, Tina Johnson; and a brother, Bernard Lusk.
Other survivors include two sons, Roscoe Thomas and his wife, Tammy, of King, N.C., and Bernard Thomas of Bud Mountain; five daughters, Catherine Meador of Stephenson, Marie Daugherty of King, N.C., Geneva Tolliver and her husband, Shelby, of Bud Mountain, Rella Tingler of Beckley, and Edna Keenan of South Carolina; a brother, William Lusk of Cabin Creek; four sisters, Geneva Colbird of Bud, Racheal Blankenship of New Richmond, Jeanetta Godsey of Cabin Creek, and Ona Worf of North Carolina; 23 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services and burial will be 11 a.m. Friday at Hickory Ridge Cemetery, Bud Mountain, with Elder Bryce Phillips officiating.
Friends may call after 6 p.m. Thursday where overnight visitation will be at the Lusk "old home place" (home of Mrs. Burnecke) on Bud Mountain.

SECOND CREEK -- Julia Jones Dempsey, 71, formerly of Alderson, died Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998, in a Low Moor, Va., hospital following a long illness.
Born Oct. 16, 1927, in New York City, she was the daughter of the late Issac and Stella Warner Jones.
Mrs. Jones was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew Dempsey in May of 1987.
Survivors include four sons, John Dempsey of Peterstown, Tom and Charles Dempsey, both of Sinks Grove, and William Dempsey of Second Creek; four daughters, Velma Martin, Sarah Reed and Roza Miller, all of Alderson, and Jane Burdette of Lexington, N.C.; a brother, Franklin Jones of Vine Grove, Ky .; a sister, Emma Dempsey of Second Creek; 20 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Lobban Funeral Home Chapel, Alderson, with the Rev. David Spencer officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Park Cemetery, Second Creek.

SUMMERSVILLE -- Maria E. Hamilton, 57, died Sunday, Nov. 29, 1998, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness.
Born Aug. 30, 1941, at Richwood, she was the daughter of Jennie Faith Smallwood of Lecanto, Fla., and the late James Vincentio Digregorio.
Mrs. Hamilton was a homemaker.
Other survivors include two sons, William Hamilton of Madison, and Robert Hamilton II of Summersville; a daughter, Barbara Crislip of Summersville; and four grandchildren.
Private services will be held at a later date.

Curtis LeGrand Jr.
Curtis LeGrand Jr., 57, of 311 Bair St., Beckley, died Tuesday, Nov. 24, 1998, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness.
Born Aug. 3, 1939, in Logan County, he was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Curtis LeGrand.
Mr. LeGrand was one of five children, attended Sunday school and taught the Bible at an early age, he accepted Christ and became a member of New Hope Baptist Church.
He attended Morris High School in Bronx, N.Y. and Bethel Gospel Tabernacle. In 1959, he married Naomi I. Cole.
Mr. LeGrand enjoyed visits with his father and after his death, remained in West Virginia, where he was actively involved at New Hope Baptist Church, having sang in the Mens Chorus.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Janya D. LeGrand; and a grandson, Tyronne Locklear.
Other survivors along with his wife include: two daughters, Sheryl C. LeGrand and Omelia R. LeGrand; a son, Kelvin L. LeGrand and his wife; six grandchildren, Kimberly Owens, Shauntz Locklear, Anthony LeGrand, Domonique LeGrand, Benjamin Moore III, and Antoinette Smith; a brother, John T. LeGrand; a sister, Princess LeGrand West; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, other relatives and friends.
Services will be noon Thursday at New Hope Baptist Church, with the Rev. O.T. Moore officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park, Beckley.
Friends may call one hour before the services Thursday at the church.

Homer "Woody" Lewis
OAK HILL -- Homer "Woody" Lewis, 74, died Monday, Nov. 30, 1998, in a Charleston hospital following a short illness.
Born July 28, 1924, at Page, he was the son of the late Homer C. and Gertrude Wilson Lewis.
Mr. Lewis was the former owner of Woody's Fountain Exxon, Oak Hill, and was a World War II U.S. Army veteran.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Frank, Harry and Lacy Lewis; and six sisters, Dorothy Gast, Vona Harding, Evelyn Hambrick, Beula Andrick, Helen Lewis and Pearl Hamilton.
Survivors include four daughters, Cindy Lewis of Oak Hill, Sharyn Kennedy of Chicago, Ill., Ava Gumiran of Chicago, and Lisa Tincher of Jacksonville, Fla.; five sons, Ron Lewis of Eleanor, James Tincher of Fayetteville, Brian Stevens of Fayetteville, Rick Lewis of Chicago, and Wesley Lewis of Fayetteville; two sisters, Viola Toney of Mount Hope and Naomi Lewis of Wilmington, Del.; a brother, John Lewis of Warren, Ohio; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Tyree Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill, with the Rev. Bill Menefee officiating. Entombment will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum, Oak Hill, where military graveside rites will be conducted by the VFW Post No. 3110 of Oak Hill.

Blaine O'Dell
LEWISBURG -- Blaine O'Dell, 87, formerly of Rainelle, died Sunday, Nov. 29, 1998, at the home of his niece in Pensacola, Fla.
Born Nov. 13, 1911, at Hominy Falls, he was the son of the late Jess and Elsie Huffman O'Dell.
Mr. O'Dell started in the coal mines in 1927, working at Marguette Coal Company, Marfrance, and then Peabody Coal Company at Bellwood. He went to work with UMWA District 29 as a representative in January of 1948, retiring in May of 1972.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Bertie L. Price O'Dell on March 7, 1998.
Survivors include a daughter, Cheryll Marchica of Medford, N.Y.; a niece, whom he raised as a daughter, Jenny Arthur and her husband, Edward, of Pensacola, Fla.; a son, Blaine O'Dell Jr. and his wife, Harriet, of Millis, Mass.; a brother, Ervin O'Dell of Quinwood; nine grandchildren, Veda O'Dell, Kelly O'Dell, Kathleen O'Dell, Melanie Strange, Lisa Reynolds, John Marchica, Kimberly Orlowski, Twana Bright, and Jennifer Helton; five great-grandchildren, Amanda, Matthew, Emilee, Natalie, and Jenna Blaine; and also nieces, nephews, and sisters-in-law.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home Chapel, Rainelle, with the Rev. Leroy Crane officiating. Burial will follow in the End of the Trail Cemetery, Clintonville.

MOUNT HOPE -- Lena M. Rhodes Pomeroy, 79, died Monday, Nov. 30, 1998, at the home of her granddaughter, Anita D'Angelo of Glen Jean, following a long illness.
Born March 24, 1919, at Quick, she was the daughter of the late Tony and Anna Eder Sr.
Mrs. Pomeroy was a homemaker and a member of the Kilsyth Free Will Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Jess L. Rhodes on Nov. 4, 1963; her second husband, Paul S. Pomeroy on Feb. 24, 1998; a son, Richard L. "Dick" Rhodes on July 6, 1991; three brothers, Tony Eder Jr., Hazel Eder, and George Eder; and a sister, Elizabeth Hinte.
Survivors include her granddaughter, Anita Rhodes D'Angelo and her husband, Jim, of Glen Jean; a grandson, Jess Rhodes and his wife, Treni, of Mount Hope; four great-grandchildren, Lucy D'Angelo and Jamie D'Angelo, both of Glen Jean, and Richard Rhodes and Ashley Rhodes, both of Mount Hope; a stepdaughter, Nadine Nettler of Virginia; two sisters, Anna M. Hinte of Scarbro, and Frances Fontana of Mount Hope; and several nieces and nephews.

Born Nov. 24, 1909, at Watoga in Pocahontas County, he was the son of the late John Edward and Nancy Jane Bishop Spence.
Mr. Spence was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church, Lewisburg, was a retired foreman with the C&O Railroad and was a life member of the Brotherhood of Maintenance Way.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Genevieve Meadows Spence; a daughter, Dorothy Lemons and her husband, Ronald L., of Lewisburg; two sons, Donald B. Spence and his wife, Marlene D., of Springfield, Pa., and Michael W. Spence and his wife, Shelia M., of Ralla, Mo.; and seven grandchildren, Anita M. Spence, Donald B. Spence Jr., Brian L. Spence, Gloria D. lemons, Andrew L. Lemons, John F. Spence and Janeann M. Spence.

Adeline (Trudy) Stafford
FANROCK -- Adeline (Trudy) Stafford, 64, died Monday, Nov. 30, 1998, in a Beckley hospital following a sudden illness.
Born Nov. 24, 1934, at Prosperity, she was the daughter of the late Felix and Helen Nagy Spoltore.
Mrs. Stafford was a homemaker and had attended the Church of God. She had resided at Heartland of Beckley for the past 11 years, where she lived a happy life.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Sheila Ann Stafford and a sister, Maryanna Massey.
Survivors include her husband of 44 years, Harry L. Stafford Sr.; three sons, Harry L. Stafford Jr. of Ghent, Cecil L. Stafford of Oceana, and David F. Stafford of Pineville; a daughter, Tammy Margaret Stafford of Salem, Va.; two sisters, Sylvia Enz of Cleveland, Ohio, and Sandy Katz of Zephyrhills, Fla.; and six grandchildren, Heath, Chelsea, Courtney, Megan, Caleb and Tyler Stafford.
Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Calfee Funeral Service Chapel with the Revs. Timmy Brewster and Norman Gray officiating. Burial will follow in the Morgan Cemetery at Indian Creek.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the Simons-Coleman Funeral Home, Richwood. Friends may call noon until time of the services Saturday at the funeral home.
