Rowena R. Naus Koch
Died: Friday, June 7, 2002
Rowena R. Naus Koch, 88, of Wapakoneta and formerly of Lima and Harrod, died Friday, June 7, 2002 in the Wapakoneta Manor Nursing Home.
She was born March 24, 1914 in Lima, the daughter of Scarfie V. and Ruth Margaret (Crumrine) Oswald.
On June 15, 1931 she married Roger H. Naus and he died December 2, 1953. On April 6, 1958 she married Frederick J. "Fritz" Koch, who survives in Wapakoneta.
Other survivors include one son, Roger J. (Mary Jo) Naus of Shreveport, LA; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, Robert E. Oswald of Lima and Thomas H. (Martha) Oswald of Lima; one sister, Mrs. Henry (Dorothy) Popkin of Lima and one sister-in-law, Lona Oswald of Ft. McCoy, FL.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Roger Lee Oswald and Donald M. Oswald.
Mrs. Koch was owner and operator from 1937-1945 of the Naus Community Market in Harrod and worked as a buyer from 1945-1971 for The Leader Store in Lima. She graduated from Lima South High School. She was a former member of the Wesley United Methodist Church and a member of the Uniopolis United Methodist Church, where she was treasurer. She was a member of the United Methodist Women's Society and a volunteer with the Wapakoneta Visiting Nurses Association. She was a member of the Uniopolis Volunteer Firemen's Ladies Auxiliary and the Uniopolis Historical Society.
In 1970 she became a member of Lima Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and in 1990 became a life member. Mrs. Koch had volunteered 14,201 1/2 hours with Lima Memorial Hospital with most of those hours in the emergency room.
Funeral services were held June 10, in the Bayliff & Son Funeral Home, Cridersville, with the Rev. David Gordon officiating.
Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery, Lima.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Uniopolis United Methodist Church, Lima Memorial Hospital Auxiliary of the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Kenneth W. Jarrell
Died: Sunday, April 7, 2002
Kenneth W. Jarrell, 52, of Dunkirk, died Sunday, April 7, 2002 at Hardin Hills Health Center, Kenton.
He was born September 18, 1949 in Harrod, to Wesley A. and Louise (Mullins) Jarrell, both of whom are deceased.
He was formerly married to Shirley Jean Wright Ruffing, who survives in Carey.
Other survivors include a son, Tomie Jarrell (fiancee, Leah Strait) of Findlay; a daughter, Sherrie Jarrell of Findlay; a step-daughter, Joyce Fizer of Clearwater, Fla.; four brothers, Rev. Forest Edward (Linda) Jarrell of Lima, James Douglas (Carol) Jarrell of Bucyrus, Bucky Ray (Phyllis) Jarrell of Columbus, and Rev. George Haskell (Sonya) Jarrell of Dunkirk; three sisters: Brenda Sue Watkins (companion, James Zechman) of Kenton, Sharlene (Robert) Sipe of Nevada, Ohio, and Alice Mae Jarrell (companion, Jeff Kinton) of Findlay; and three grandchildren: Chelsea Marie Smith, Chance Thomas Maenle, and Siera Jade Dillingham.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Darlene Jarrell.
Mr. Jarrell was a machinist in Fostoria. He was a life member of the VFW Post 9381 of Ada. He was also a life member of the Disabled Veterans of Findlay. He belonged to the Emergency Corp. at Fostoria.
Services were held Wednesday, April 10 at Hanson-Neely Funeral Home, Alger, with Pastor Tony Lyon officiating.
Burial was in Preston Cemetery, Alger. Graveside military services were conducted by the VFW Post 9381 of Ada.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hardin Hospice Care of Kenton and/or to the family.

Glenna R. Emlinger
Died: Wednesday, April 3, 2002
Glenna R. Emlinger, 76, of Ada, died Wednesday, April 3, 2002 at Lima Memorial Hospital, Lima.
She was born August 9, 1925 in Ada, to Peter Raymond and Grace (Leek) Whetzler, both of whom are deceased.
She was formerly married to August Gus Emlinger, who does not survive.
Survivors include two sons: Robert Emlinger of Kenton and William (Mary) Shaw of Inkster, Michigan; a daughter, Cathy (Erwin) Nelson of Ada; two sisters-in-law: Shirley Whetzler of Ada and Mary Whetzler of Ada; ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Donald (Butch) Emlinger; a granddaughter, Lora Marie Emlinger; three brothers: Donald Whetzler, Marvin Whetzler, and Robert Whetzler; and two sisters: Elenor Curtis and Marjorie Morgan.
Mrs. Emlinger worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse at Lima Memorial Hospital for 25 years and retired from Oakwood Forensic Center after working ten years there. Her hobbies included quilting, reading, and doing crossword puzzles in ink. She especially loved her family and faithful companion, her dog Bridgett.
Services were held on Saturday, April 6 at Hanson-Neely Funeral Home, Ada, with Chaplain Dottie Kaiser officiating.
Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery, Ada.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Hardin County Humane Society and/or the Ada Public Library.

Oliver L. Hawk
Died: Wednesday, April 3, 2002
Oliver L. Hawk, 79, of Lima, died Wednesday, April 3, 2002 at Lost Creek Care Center, Lima.
He was born January 28, 1923 in Lafayette, to John and Lena (Hefner) Hawk, both of whom are deceased.
In 1957, he married Juanita Striff, who survives.
Other survivors include two sons: Michael L. (Becky, fiancee) Hawk of Elida and Robert J. (Barbara) Rupert of Lima; two daughters: Pamela G. (Perry) Rumbaugh of Lima and Janice A. Buckmaster of St. Dyer, Indiana; two brothers: Richard (Betty) Hawk of Lafayette and Russell (Carla) Hawk of Lima; four sisters: Mildred Servis of Lima, Mary Barber of Beaverdam, Katherine (George) Herron of Rockport, and Frances (Neil) Tussing of Waynesfield; ten grandcildren: Anita, Shannon, Steven, Robert, Jodi, Melissa, Aaron, Shad, Zachary and Colt; five great-grandchildren: Derek, Shelby, Chandler, Jordan and Rhys.
He was preceded in death by two brothers: Clifton Jacob Hawk and John Junior Hawk; and by five sisters: Margaret Hawk, Helen Lawrence, Edith Hawk, Bertha Holt and Dertha Nell Hawk.
Mr. Hawk was an Army veteran of World War II, serving with Company B-735th Tank Battalion. His outfit saw action in five major campaigns: Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe. He received the following decorations and citations: Purple Heart Medal, Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Service Medal, and European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with 5 campaign Bronze Stars.
He also volunteered his time at the Allen County Museum to help restore the Sherman Tank. He enjoyed assisting with the railroad displays at Lincoln Park. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a member of the Allen County Sportsman & Farmers Association. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #96, the VFW Post #1275, the National Rifle Association and the Tri-State Gun Collectors.
Services were held on Saturday, April 6 at Chiles & Sons - Laman Shawnee Chapel, with Chaplain Dick Coon officiating.
Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery with military rites performed by the VFW Post #1275.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Allen County Museum and/or the Lincoln Park Railroad Display.

Mary Katharine "Kitty" Hammond
Died: Sunday, March 31, 2002
Mary Katharine Kitty Hammond, 77, Lima, died Sunday, March 31, 2002, at St. Rita's Medical Center, Lima.
She was born September 4, 1924 in Washington, DC, to Gen. Paschal N. and Mary H. (Heaphy) Strong, who preceded her in death.
She married Elton F. Hammond, Jr. on September 23, 1946 in Georgia and he survives in Lima.
Other survivors include two sons: Elton F. (Cynthia) Hammond III of North Chelmsford, Mass., and Paschal S. Pat (Sharon) Hammond of Ashland, Wis.; two daughters: S. Katharine Kathie Hammond (Judy Bedford) of Berkeley, Calif.; and Mary L. Malou (Wojciech Komornicki) Komornicka of Roseville, Minn.; two brothers: Paschal N. (Nancy) Strong, Jr. of Tampa, Fla.; and Charles (May) Strong of Savannah, Ga.; and one sister, Patricia (Gordon) Fenwick of Savannah, Ga.; and seven grandchildren: Elizabeth, Jolanta, Christina, Janelle, Elton IV, Brian and Sean.
She was a life-long lover of learning and a giver to her community. She retired in 1988 after 25 years as a Professor of History and Political Science at Ohio Northern University. As Professor Emeritus, she continued to teach at ONU until 2000. She graduated from Swarthmore College in 1945, earned her Masters Degree from the University of Delaware in 1958 and a J.D. from Ohio Northern University in 1976. She was active in the League of Women Voters in Kansas and Lima for 44 years. Recently she has been active with the Reading Buddy program at the Bradfield Center and the Stars Program at the Faurot School. She was a life-long member of the Episcopal Church and a member of Christ Church Episcopal for 42 years, where she served on the church vestry.
Services were held at Christ Church Episcopal on Wednesday, with the Rev. Darwin Ralston officiating. The body was cremated.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Kitty Hammond Memorial Fund to be directed by the family within the Christ Church Episcopal Memorial Fund to continue the lifelong dedication to learning and education within the Lima Area.

Jeannie Helton
Died: Tuesday, March 26, 2002
Jeannie Helton, 46, of Alger, died Tuesday, March 26, 2002 at Lima Memorial Hospital, Lima.
She was born March 25, 1956 in Lynch, Kentucky, to Monroe and Maxine (Rowe) Helton, both of whom survive in Alger.
Other survivors include two sons: Cody Staley of Ada and Ty Gilroy of Alger; four daughters: Stephanie Montgomery of Lima, Somer Helton of Foraker, Tess Gilroy of Foraker, and Brianna Staley of Ada; three sisters: Patti (Bill) Kelly of Deer Creek, Ohio, Atholene Athy (David) Pfeiffer of Taylors, SC, and Donna Weber of Alger; three grandchildren: Kameron Montgomery, Kylie Montgomery and Jayden Evans.
Ms. Helton formerly worked at Ford Motor Company on the assembly line. She was saved and baptized by the pastor of the Alger First United Methodist Church.
Services were held on Saturday, March 30 at Hanson-Neely Funeral Home, Alger, with Rev. Calvin Waugh and Curtis Conley officiating.
Burial was in Preston Cemetery, Alger.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Ohio Kidney Foundation.

Donovan L. Poling
Died: Tuesday, March 26, 2002
Donovan L. Poling, 57, of Ada, died Tuesday, March 26, 2002 at his residence.
He was born October 21, 1944 in Lima, to Russell L. and Dorothy (Hall) Poling, both of whom are deceased.
Survivors include a son, Donovan R. Poling of Cardington, Ohio; two daughters: Karen (Dan) Cury of Delaware and Ann (R.C.) Edler of Columbus; three grandchildren: Kira Fleming, Christian Cury and Justin Poling; and a sister, Edna (Peter) Cardiero of Girard.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Logan Whitely Earl.
Mr. Poling was a Sales Consultant for Certanium Alloys (Lawson Industries) & Research Co. of Cleveland. He was a 1963 graduate of Ada High School.
Services were held Saturday, March 30 at Hanson-Neely Funeral Home, Ada, with Rev. Laura Raypholtz-Clark officiating.
Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery, Ada.
Memorial contributions may be made to Huntington's Disease Society.

Evelyn E. Epley
Died: Saturday, March 23, 2002
Evelyn E. Epley, 79, of Ada, died Saturday, March 23, 2002 at Lima Memorial Hospital.
She was born April 30, 1922 in Lima to James and Ethel (Klingler) Parshall.
She married Ross Epley on April 19, 1939 and he survives in Ada.
Other survivors include two sons: James (Dawn) Epley of Ada; Scott (Connie) Epley of Indian Lake; one daughter, Susan (Jon) Umphress of Ada and one daughter-in-Law, Sherry Dunson, of Ada; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and eight step-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Charlie Epley; one granddaughter, Jennifer Umphress, and three sisters, Mildred Snider, Jean Toland and Janet Stokes.
She was a homemaker. She also formerly worked at the Ohio Northern University snack shop and Lafayette Co-op. She was a former member of the Lima Memorial Hospital Volunteer Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary Post 185 of Ada, Town & Country Quilters of Lafayette, Crafty Quilters of Lafayette, Thirties Sewing Club of Lima and a former member of Bunko Club of Ada. She enjoyed the summertime dances in Lincoln Park of Lima on Friday nights.
Services were held Tuesday, March 26 at the Hanson-Neely Funeral Home, Ada, with Chaplin Dottie Kaiser officiating.
Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery, Ada.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Jennifer Umphress Scholarship Fund at Ada High School.

Howard B. McBride
Died: Saturday, March 23, 2002
Howard B. McBride, 75, of Ada, died Saturday, March 23, 2002 at his residence.
He was born June 24, 1926 in Allen County, Ohio, to Bert and Gwena (Stemen) McBride.
He married Maxine Deringer November 16, 1958 and she survives in Ada.
Other survivors include one son, Mark (Denise) McBride of Newaygo, Mich., one granddaughter, April McBride, Newaygo, Mich.; three brothers: Robert (Anabel) McBride and Andrew (Doris) McBride, both of Ada; and Nelson (Margaret) McBride of Casa Grande, Ariz.; three sisters: Gertrude Thompson, of Rockford; Leota (Clarence) Barker of Westfield, Ind., and Ruth McBride, of Bluffton; and one brother-in-law, John Pizor of North Canton.
He was preceded in death by an infant brother, Scott McBride, an infant sister, Helen McBride and a sister Elizabeth Pizor.
Following graduation from Ada High School during World War II, he was drafted into the U.S. Army Medics, where he served two years in the South Pacific. He was a partner in McBride Brothers woodworking for 15 years, and was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for 28 years. He enjoyed all sports, travel, music, and was an excellent swimmer and diver, as well as an avid fisherman.
Upon retirement, he and his wife served eight years as missionaries to the Navajo Indians near Gallup, New Mexico. He was a life-long member of the First Baptist Church of Ada, where he held offices as trustee, deacon, Sunday School Superintendent and served as treasurer for 18 years.
Services were held Wednesday, March 27, at the First Baptist Church of Ada with Pastor Jack Duffy officiating.
Burial was in McElroy Cemetery, Liberty Township, Ada.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Land Fund at the First Baptist Church of Ada, Ohio, and/or to the charity of the donor's choice.

Wanda L. Simon
Died: Saturday, March 23, 2002
Wanda L. Simon, 75, of Ada, died Saturday, March 23, 2002 at Hardin Hills Health Center, Kenton.
She was born February 18, 1927 in Lima to Earl and Erdene (Weis) Morrison.
On June 8, 1946, she married Sylvan Simon and he died July 16, 1987.
Other survivors include three sons: David (Karen) Simon, Anthony Simon and Michael (Kim) Simon, all of Ada; one daughter, Cathy (Steven) Robirds, Ada; five brothers: Lloyd Morrison, Richard (Jeanette) Morrison, and Donald Morrison, all of Kenton; Carl Morrison and Paul (Stella) Morrison, both of Ada; one sister, Hazel (Charles) Umphress, Ada; a dear friend, Chester France, Kenton; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Charles Simon and one sister, Mary Foster.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Bethel Church of Christ.
Services were held Wednesday, March 27 at the Hanson-Neely Funeral Home, Ada, with Harrison Underwood officiating.
Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery, Ada.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Hardin County Cancer Society and/or Hardin County Hospice, Kenton.

Dale Pugh
Died: Wednesday, March 20, 2002
Dale Pugh, Phoenix, AZ, died March 20, 2002 in Phoenix.
He was a lawyer and CPA.
Survivors include a sister, Helen (Pugh) Bolton.
