Claire A. Funk, 74, of Jeannette, died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1999, in Westmoreland Manor, Hempfield Township. She was born Dec. 2, 1924, in Penn Township, a daughter of the late Joseph and Nellie Klingensmith Woll. She was a member of the Alliance Church of Jeannette and the AARP. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Funk; and three sisters, Alma Peer, Evelyn Brown and Esther Woll. She is survived by two sisters, Rose Marie Bundgard of Mt. Pleasant and Geraldine Gregory of Greensburg; a sister-in-law, Stella Barkefelt of Jeannette; and numerous nieces and nephews. Richard B. Gardner, of McCandless Township, died Monday, Nov. 1, 1999, at UPMC Passavant Hospital. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Catherine (Genkinger) Gardner; a daughter, Karen Luderer of Clarion; a son, Dr. Robert Gardner of Dayton, Ohio; a sister, Barbara; and brothers, James and Alfred Gardner; and four grandchildren. Mr. Gardner was a World War II veteran; a Robert Morris College alumnus; an elder and trustee of Memorial Park Presbyterian Church; a member of Avalon Lodge #657, F&AM, Bellevue American Legion Post 0161, and North Allegheny #168 AARP. Mary Sue (Bovington) Johnson, 70, of Mt. Lebanon, died peacefully at home on Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Dec. 4, 1928, to the late John R. and Helen Pettibone. She graduated from Wheaton College in Massachusetts in 1951; married C. Bayard Johnson Jr. in 1958; and settled in Pittsburgh in 1971. She is survived by her loving husband, Bayard; daughters and sons-in-law, Cam and Greg Allen of Mt. Lebanon and Gail Johnson and Tim Elgren of Clinton, N.Y.; daughter, Molly Johnson of Seattle, Wash.; son and daughter-in-law, Bayard and Karen Johnson of St. Louis, Mo.; and six grandchildren, Robby, Brad, Scott, Ruth, Ben and Bay. She is also survived by her brother, John R. Bovington of Cleveland, Ohio. She was a dedicated, active grandmother, a member of Southminster Presbyterian Church and active in numerous church and community activities, including Southminster choir, women's hand bell team and AFS student exchange. Her family gratefully acknowledges the outpouring of support throughout the past few months from friends near and far, as well as the caring guidance and support of the Family Hospice. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Nov. 13, at 9:30 a.m. at Southminster Presbyterian Church in Mt. Lebanon. BETTY MacDONALD
Betty MacDonald, 90, of Ligonier, died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 1999, in the Bethlen Home in Ligonier Township. She was born June 29, 1909, in Portskerra, Scotland, a daughter of the late Norman and Elizabeth Belford MacKay. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert W. MacDonald, on Sept. 17, 1988; a son, Alexander W. MacDonald, on Dec. 10, 1995; and seven brothers and sisters. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Frederick (Norma C.) Thomas of Newark, Ohio, and Mrs. Richard (Betty Joan) Matson of Ligonier RD1; a son, Robert H. MacDonald of Virginia Beach, Va.; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Louise (Blystone) Mensch, 75, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1999, at her home in Richland, Mich. Formerly of the Mt. Pleasant area, she was a daughter of the late Irene and Kenneth Blystone. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford A. Mensch; a sister, Adah Belle Kampitch; and a brother, Darrell T. Blystone. She is survived by her sons, Clifford Mensch of California, John Mensch and Kenneth Mensch of Michigan; daughters, Lena Koger of Galesburg, Mich., and Cathy Banks of Cadillac, Mich.; a brother, Robert J. Blystone of Hancock, Md.; and a sister, Phyllis Carns of Greensburg. She is also survived by six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. L. Dale Palmer, 78, of Greensburg, died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1999, in Hempfield Manor, Greensburg. He was born June 9, 1921, in Greensburg, a son of the late Luther Lee and Anna Truxel Palmer. Prior to retirement, he had been employed by the state Highway Department. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret L. Altman Palmer; a son, Larry Dale Palmer, who died in Vietnam in 1970; and a brother, Vernon Russell Palmer. Mary R. Diveley Pritts, 81, of Mt. Pleasant, died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1999, in Mt. Gilead, Ohio. She was born Sept. 12, 1918, in Aberdeen, S.D., a daughter of the late Merl D. and Gladys Njos Diveley. She was a member of Mt. Joy Church of the Brethren. Mary was a graduate of Meyersdale High School, Class of 1936. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold O. Pritts, in 1984; and a brother, Merl D. Diveley, in 1997. She is survived by two sons, Wayne Pritts of Villa Ridge, Mo., and Merl Pritts and wife, Fay, of Mt. M. Blanche Shaffer, 81, of Penn Run, died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1999, at Indiana Hospital. Daughter of Edward Barr and Vernie Johns Barr, she was born June 13, 1918, in Heilwood. Mrs. Shaffer lived all of her life in Indiana County and worked as a secretary and salesperson for Ager Appliances, Indiana. Jennie Marie Shrader, 94, of South Greensburg, died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1999, at her home. She was born Nov. 19, 1904, in Greensburg, the daughter of the late Francis and Beulah Quick Albert. She was a member of the South Greensburg United Methodist Church, the Western Pennsylvania Firemen's Auxiliary Association, and a former member of the Dames of Malta. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John D. Shrader; and two daughters, Mrs. Ruth Shrader Mates and Mrs. Beulah Shrader Hale. She is survived by her son, Clarence R. DELFINO P. CALVO
Delfino P. Calvo, 77, of Latrobe (Mechesneytown), died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 1999, in the Latrobe Area Hospital. He was born Aug. 13, 1922, in New Derry, a son of the late Guiseppi and Merchiolina (Calvo) Calvo. Prior to his retirement in 1986, he was a teacher of instrumental music at the Derry Area High School, where he had over 42 years of service. He was also a member and chief negotiator for the Derry Area Education Association. Del was a 1939 graduate of the Indiana Area High School, and a 1941 graduate of the Ernest Williams Professional School of Music in Ithaca, N.Y. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II, and played in the Army Air Corps band stationed at Bolling Field in Washington, D.C. This band played at all State Department and related national functions. After being discharged from the service, he received his bachelor's degree in music from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and his Master's of Music Education from Duquesne University. He was a member of the Latrobe Presbyterian Church, the church chancel choir, the Willing Workers of the church, and, along with his wife, delivered Meals on Wheels. Del was a member of the Greensburg Musical Society Local 339, and played in the Del Mar Quintet Dance Band. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Louise (Krisak) Calvo, in 1983; and a brother, Raymond Calvo. He is survived by his wife, Susannah M. (Jones) Calvo, whom he married in 1984; two children, Deleen L. DeMary and her husband, Don, of Norvelt and Daniel J. Calvo and his wife, Mary Ann, of Hopkinton, Mass.; his stepmother, Alda (Psenda) Calvo of Corteranzo, Province of Alessandria, Italy; four grandchildren, Michael Nicol and his wife, Katherine, Brock Smith, Tim Smith and Colleen Calvo; two sisters, Mary Costanzo and her husband, Luigi, of Milan, Italy, and Sylvia Paracca and her husband, Pierangelo, of Valdellatorre, Province of Torino, Italy; and a number of nieces and nephews. Irene Sleighter Iager, 80, of Columbia, Md., died Sunday, Feb. 14, 1999, of a massive stroke. She was born Nov. 17, 1918, a daughter of the late William Garland and Eva Elizabeth Long Sleighter. Catherine C. (Stamford) Ingelido, 56, of Greensburg, died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 1999. Beloved wife of Richard E. ``Dick'' Ingelido; loving mother of Lori, Michael Debruyn and wife, Rosanne, David Debruyn and Laura, and Richie Ingelido Jr.; grandmother of Michael and Jordan Debruyn; sister of Ralph Stamford and wife, Patricia; daughter-in-law of Alberta Tedesco; sister-in-law of Theresa Ingelido, John Ingelido and Frank Tedesco; also survived by several nieces and nephews. OTTO L. SAUNIER JR.
Otto L. Saunier Jr., 61, of Moon Township for the past 36 years, formerly of Mt. Washington, died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 1999, at Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh. He was born in Pittsburgh, Sept. 19, 1938, to the late Mabel E. (Hurd) and Otto L. Saunier Sr. He attended Duquesne University for two years. He was active in R.O.T.C. and the Air National Guard for four years. He was president of Greater Pittsburgh Ten Pin Bowling Association and ABC (American Bowling Congress). He bowled in 27 national bowling tours throughout America. His memberships included: B.P.O.E. #339 of the North Side, Pittsburgh, Universal Moose in Penn Hills, and was an active member and past board of directors for the National Association of Independent Re-Surfacer (N.A.I.R.). Mr. Saunier was the owner and operator of All American Bowling Equipment Co. The origin of All American Bowling Equipment Co. began in France in 1892. Alphonse Saunier installed one of the first bowling lanes in France. He moved to the U.S.A. in 1901. In that same year, he began installing lanes for Brunswick Balke Collender and for himself, under the name of Saunier Contracting. In 1920, he founded the company known as Saunier Wilhem. After he passed away in 1928, his wife, Elizabeth, sold the company to the Wilhem family. This company is still in existence today. Alphonse's son, Otto Sr., who had worked with his father formed his own company with his brothers under the name of the Saunier Brothers. This company operated for several years before Otto Sr. went out on his own under the name of Otto Saunier Contracting. He installed and refinished bowling lanes until 1946. In that year, Otto Saunier Sr. formed All American Bowling Equipment Co. His son, Otto Jr., joined him in the business in 1949 at the age of 11. The two worked together until Otto Sr. passed away in 1979. In 1981, Otto Jr. took over control of the company from his mother, Mabel. Today, Otto Jr., 61 years of age, had 50 years of experience in the bowling business. Like his father before him, Otto Jr. had also been blessed with a son. Brian, who is 37 years old, is the fourth generation in the business. Like his father, Brian worked with the company from an early age. He currently has over 23 years in the business. With the ever changing complexity of the bowling business, Brian has had the opportunity to travel the world installing lanes, pinsetters and automatic scoring. In recent months, he has traveled to Japan, Israel, Mexico, India, Cuba and Turkey. Currently, All American Bowling is not only doing installations for themselves, they are a major installer for AMF Bowling Inc. LLOYD FRANKLIN STAMY
Lloyd Franklin Stamy, 78, of Fox Chapel, on Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999, after an extended illness. He was the beloved husband of 50 years of Barbara Lee Owens Stamy; devoted father of Lloyd Franklin Stamy Jr. of Shadyside, Stephen Reese Stamy of Shadyside, Cynthia Scott Stamy of London, England, and Susan Blythe Stamy Peterson (Mrs. Charles J. Peterson III) of Sullivan's Island, S.C.; and the proud grandfather of Caroline MacLauchlin Stamy of Shadyside and Hayden Grace Stamy of London, England. An eighth-generation Pennsylvanian, Mr. Stamy was born in Greenspring, Cumberland County, Jan. 16, 1921, and graduated from Shippensburg University in 1942 with a B.S. degree in business administration. Although he worked on several major construction projects, including the building of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, the majority of his career involved the sale of heavy earth-moving equipment. He joined Beckwith Machinery Co. in 1944 and was named sales manager in 1949. In 1952, he founded the Lloyd F. Stamy Co., a construction equipment dealer and real estate developer. A deacon, elder, and Sunday school teacher at the Shadyside Presbyterian Church, Mr. Stamy was a member of Masonic Lodge 45, and the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of Free Masonry, Valley of Pittsburgh, and a member of the Syria Shrine. He was also a member of the University Club and Wahnita Lodge Hunting and Fishing Camp. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, at Shadyside Presbyterian Church. HELEN C. TUCCI
Helen C. Tucci, 85, formerly of Youngwood, died Monday, Nov. 1, 1999, in Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. She was born Oct. 12, 1914, in Youngwood, a daughter of the late Joseph and Onorata D'Agostini Ciampini. Prior to her retirement, she had been employed by Westinghouse. She was a member of Holy Cross Church, Youngwood, the Holy Cross Ladies Guild and the A&B Club of Youngwood. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rocco Tucci; a sister, Stella Cassa; and three brothers, Merle, Pete and Albert Ciampini. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Frank (Mary Ann) Gazda of Warren, Ohio, and Mrs. Robert (Laura Jean) Sinnamond of Greensburg; a son, Thomas Tucci and his wife, Karen, of Ruffsdale; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Friends were received at the C. RICHARD McCAULEY FUNERAL HOME INC., Youngwood, Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and will be received Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday at 11 a.m. in Holy Cross Church, Youngwood, with Father John S. Szczesny as celebrant. Interment
in the Greensburg Catholic Cemetery.
