Alma Edeline Haddox Bass

Alma Edeline Haddox Bass was born January 1, 1920, in Columbia, La., the daughter of William Sebron and Louanne Kirkland Haddox. After graduation from high school Alma Edeline attended Louisiana State Normel College in Natchitoches, La. After college she worked as a chemist with the Standard Oil Company where she distilled 100 percent octane gas for war planes during World War II.

In 1944, she joined the Navy and was stationed at Camp Lejeune, N.C. as a nurse on the Marine base. There she met Summer Curtis Bass Jr., a Marine, who had just finished his tour in the South Pacific. They became engaged and were married on Oct. 2, 1945.

Following her military service she attended University of Florida and Valdosta College and graduated with a bachelor of science degree.

Alma Edeline loved the "Bass Farm" where she raised her three sons, O'neal, Lynn and Winston. She lived there with family members until her death on July 18, 2003. She will be greatly missed by her family: O'neal and his wife, Alice Bass, Lynn Bass and Winston Bass and his wife, Mildred McCoy Bass; four grandchildren, Robert Bass, Angela Bass Hicks, Rodney Bass and Eric Bass; and three great-grandchildren.

In 1950, Alma Edeline began her teaching career with the Suwannee County School Board. She taught elementary school for 30 years and retired from the Suwannee County School Board in 1980. Since her retirement, she has remained active in the education system by mentoring new teachers. She served as an encourager and prayer warrior for new and veteran teachers.

Alma Edeline is also survived by her brother Frank Haddox of Slaughter, La., three sisters, Viola Fisher of Zacharay, La., Lennie Upshaw of Shreveport, La. and Josie Casdorph of Augusta, Ga. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Eligah Haddox of Columbia, La. and Clayton Haddox of Bastrop, La. She was preceded in death by one sister, Lydia Roddy of Fort Smith, Ark.

The Live Oak Christian Church will feel a void. Alma Edeline was an active member there. She devoted many hours to the church and ministering to others. It was common for her to gather up all the children in her neighborhood each summer and take them to Vacation Bible School at Live Oak Christian Church. She will be greatly missed by her church family, neighbors and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, July 22, at Live Oak Christian Church with the Rev. Will Minton, Mr. Robert Clifton Bass and the Rev. Joe Schmidt officiating. Interment followed in Macedonia Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Baptist Church of Live Oak Scholarship Fund, 401 W. Howard St., Live Oak, FL 32064.

Daniels Funeral Home of Live Oak was in charge of arrangements.

Edna Crowe

Edna Crowe, 82, of Live Oak, passed away Monday, July 14, 2003 in the Lake City Medical Center. The Aiken, S.C. native moved to Live Oak from Cocoa in 1956. Retired from McCrimon's Office Supply, Live Oak, after working in sales for 30 years. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star #49 and a member of the American Legion auxiliary #107. Mrs. Crowe was a member of First Baptist Church, Live Oak.

Survivors include: two sons, Richard McConnell Crowe and Clarence Arthur Crowe, both of Live Oak; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; one sister, Ruth Adeline Bledsoe, Batesburg, S.C.; and two sisters-in-law, Ruby Crowe Martin, Tampa and Elsie Crowe, Apopka.

Funeral services were conducted at 3 p.m., Sunday, July 20, at Daniels Memorial Chapel, Live Oak with the Rev. Jim Robinett and the Rev. Norm Loges officiating. Interment followed in Live Oak Cemetery.

Daniels Funeral Home of Live Oak was in charge of all arrangements.

Beulah Crosby Gilliard

Beulah Crosby Gilliard, 92, of Waycross, Ga., passed away on Friday, July 11, at the Suwannee Healthcare Nursing Home in Live Oak. She was born November 10, 1910, in Glynn County Georgia to the late Archie and Emma Crosby. She had resided in Waycross for over 60 years before coming to Live Oak in 1998 where she lived with her son until last fall when she entered Suwannee Healthcare. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Gilliard, to whom she was married for 62 years.

She is survived by her son, Larry and his wife, Naomi Gilliard of Live Oak; two grandchildren, David Gilliard and wife, Diana, of Athens, Ga. and Carol Anne Forehand and husband, Danny, of Cross City; two great-grandchildren, Maggie Forehand and Cooper Gilliard; and several nieces and nephews.

Services were held at Miles Odum Funeral Home Chapel in Waycross, Ga. on July 14, 2003.

John B. Reppert

John B. Reppert, 70, a resident of Lake City, passed away July 1 5, 2003, after an extended illness. Mr. Reppert had lived in Lake City for the past 21 years coming from Live Oak. Mr. Reppert was the son of the late William and Katherine Bietler Reppert. Mr. Reppert served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He was a member of the American Legion Post 57, The Forty and Eight and the Moose Lodge. Mr. Reppert also enjoyed watching wrestling and the Country Music Network in his spare time.

Mr. Reppert is survived by: his wife, Barbara D. Reppert, Lake City; one daughter, Monica (Del) Carter, O'Brien; three sons, John B. (Nary) Reppert Jr., Flowery Branch, Ga., Keith (Karen) Reppert, Live Oak and Michael (Tara) Krieghauser, Lake City; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one very, very dear friend, Doris Myers, Lake City.

Funeral services for Mr. Reppert were conducted Friday, July 18, at 3 p.m. in the Sherrill-Guerry Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Lonnie Johns, Christ Central Ministries, Lake City, officiating. Interment followed in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.

Sherrill-Guerry Funeral Home, Lake City was in charge of all arrangements.

LaVerna M. Vargo

LaVerna M. Vargo, 62, of Live Oak, passed away Thursday morning, July 17, 2003 at her residence. Mrs. Vargo had lived in Live Oak for the past 20 years, having moved here from Claire, Mich. Mrs. Vargo enjoyed needlepoint, bowling and selling Avon. She was of the Methodist faith. Mary Vargo preceded Mrs. Vargo in death.

Mrs. Vargo is survived by: her husband, Fred Vargo, Live Oak; three sons, Frederick Vargo Jr. (Dorrie), Live Oak, William Harold Vargo (Mary), Mayo, Kyle Vargo, Live Oak; one daughter, Kimberly Tidwell (Arthur), Live Oak; and 12 grandchildren.

Cremation arrangements were under the direction of Biggs Funeral Home, Lake City.

James L. Moore, Jr.

James L. Moore, Jr., 77, of Jasper, passed away Wednesday, July 16, 2003 at South Georgia Medical Center, Valdosta. Moore retired after 28 years in the aviation division of the United States Navy. He moved to the Jennings area 15 years ago and was a member of Jennings Church God.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Maude Johnson Moore, Jasper; one son, Jim Moore, Jasper; two daughters, Linda Marie McMinn, Bremerton, Wash. and Angela Gail Moore, Jacksonville; four grandchildren, Sean and Scott Moore and Jim and Jason McMinn; four great grandchildren, Kael Mullins, Keith Andrew McMinn, Katie Marie McMinn and Devin Moore.

Graveside services were held Saturday, July 19, 2003 at Hebron Cemetery with Rev. Colbert Croft and Rev. Cynthia Mosley officiating.

Harry T. Reid Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Linda DeShazo Adicks

Linda DeShazo Adicks, 62, of Apopka, Fla., passed away Tuesday, July 15, 2003 at Tandem Healthcare following an extended illness. The Dyer, Tennessee native was a homemaker and will be remembered as a loving wife and mother.

Survivors include her husband of 45 years, Michael Adicks, Apopka; two sons, Kent Adicks (Elizabeth), Atlanta, Ga. and Kyle Adicks (Heather), Seattle, Wash.; one daughter, Lori Posner (Robert), Apopka; her mother, Virginia DeShazo, Ft. Myers; two brothers, Steve DeShazo (Nancy) and David DeShazo (Laura), all of Ft. Myers; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Eugene and Helen Adicks, Jasper and two grandchildren, Jordan and Jason Adicks.

Graveside services were held Monday, July 21, 2003 in Evergreen Cemetery with Rev. Doug Hilliard officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Comforter, 595 Montgomery Road, Altamonte Springs, Fla., 32714.
