Hilden, Bill - Sunday, 19 Dec 2004
Elmer William “Bill” Hilden, long-time resident of Yuma, Az. and Whidbey Island, passed away on Dec. 19, 2004. He retired from a career in the U.S. Border Patrol. He was on the Border Patrol Pistol Team and assisted with the development of Adair Park Ranges. After retirement, Hilden was captain, team leader, coach, judge and jury for the U.S. Olympic Shooting Organization.
Hilden was preceded in death by son David and is survived by his wife Norene; Laura and Joe Inman, Sheri Keane, Terri and Art Mahnken; mother-in-law Jessie; eight grandchildren; co-workers and friends.
A celebration of life took place Dec. 28 in Coupeville.

Weaver, Freida - Sunday, 26 Dec 2004
Freida Jane Weaver went to be with her Lord and her husband on Dec. 26, 2004 at the age of 93. She died at her home in Oak Harbor surrounded by her loving family.
Freida was born Dec. 21, 1911 in Atlanta, Georgia to William Bartow and Jennie Dorchester (Matlock) Jenkins. She began her life an Atlanta, moving on to Tucson, Arizona, Colorado and finally to Boise, Idaho.
Freida met Glen A. Weaver and they became high school sweethearts. Following graduation, Freida worked for C.C. Anderson’s Department Store in Boise. On Sept. 16, 1934, Freida and Glen were married. Three daughters, Jane, Kay and Joan, were born in Boise.
The Weaver family moved on to Salt Lake City for a time and then on to San Luis Obispo, Calif. Freida was a member of the Grace Church, serving as a Deaconess. She was a very active church member and involved in Bible Study Fellowship and other Bible study groups. She delighted in having many missionaries stay in her home over the years. Freida was an avid gardener and took great pride in her home and gardens, which often resembled those found in gardening magazines.
Glen retired and in 1981, the Weavers moved to Oak Harbor to be near two of their daughters. The Weavers joined the First Reformed Church of Oak Harbor and Freida again took a very active role in Bible study groups.
Freida loved to cook and sew. She enjoyed caring for the needs of others and she enjoyed laughing and giggling. She was known for her ability to entertain. Most of all, she was known for her love of her family.
Freida is survived by three daughters and their spouses: Jane and Joe O’Kelley and Kay and Larry Roodzant, all of Oak Harbor and Joan and Ron Norman of Los Altos, Calif. Six grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren also survive. Her husband Glen, one sister Wanda Lee Whited and one brother John Tate Jenkins preceded her in death.
Graveside funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 29 at 1 p.m. at Maple Leaf Cemetery. Memorial services will follow at First Reformed Church of Oak Harbor with her grandson Pastor Phil Stevenson of the Whidbey Evangelical Free Church and Pastor Tad Southard officiating. A reception for family and friends will follow the services. Memorials may be made to the Gideons or the First Reformed Church Memorial Fund. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Burley Funeral Chapel, Oak Harbor.

Wyche, Tammie - Thursday, 09 Dec 2004
Tammie “Tambo” Freeman Wyche, age 42, died suddenly in Oak Harbor on Dec. 9, 2004. She was born May 18, 1962 in Muleshoe, Texas to Hershel Wayne and Theresa Jean (Thomas) Freeman. Tambo spent the first five years of her life in Texas and then moved to Seattle. She attended school in West Seattle for several years and then graduated from Inglemoor High School in Bothell in 1980.
Tambo attended Airframes and Power Plant (A&P) School and was then hired by Boeing to work as an aircraft inspector at the Everett plant. She lived in the Everett area for many years and most recently in Shoreline.
Tambo is survived by her three children: Josh Freeman of Burlington, Jennifer Howshall of Arlington, and Jimmie Adams of Utah; her father Hershel Freeman and wife Laurie of Coupeville; one brother Marty Freeman of Coupeville; and one sister Torie Acheson of Burlington.
Cremation was held. Private family committal services were held Dec. 15 with the Rev. Fred Renfroe officiating. Arrangements were entrusted to Burley Funeral Chapel, Oak Harbor.

Timm, Ami - Sunday, 19 Dec 2004
Ami V. “Jim” Timm, age 79, of Oak Harbor, died at his home Dec. 19, 2004, following an extended illness.
Mr. Timm was born in Snohomish on July 17, 1925, to John Timm and Emilie (Schachtschneider) Timm. He was raised in Cashmere, where he attended school. He entered the U.S. Army and served his country during World War II. Following the war, he returned to Cashmere and finished school. Jim married Dorothy Jean Johnson in East Wenatchee on Nov. 3, 1947. The couple resided in Cashmere for many years. Jim was employed by the City of Cashmere and then became a fruit inspector for the Washington State Dept. of Agriculture. They moved to Brewster in 1978. While in Brewster, Jim became supervisor for the WSDA District Office. He was a member of the Hope Lutheran Church in Brewster, and a member of the Cashmere Post of the American Legion.
Jim is survived by his wife, Dorothy, of Coupeville; his two sons, John Timm and wife Lori of Roy and Steve Timm and wife Kathy of Oak Harbor; three grandchildren, Becky Ducken and husband Jim of Oak Harbor, Donald Timm and wife Alicia stationed with the U.S. Army at Fort Riley, KS, and Michael Timm and wife Jamie, stationed in the US Air Force at Anchorage, AK; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Irene Gannon, of Colorado Springs, CO. He was preceded in death by his parents and by one brother, Acie Timm.
In keeping with his wishes, no services will be held. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2120 First Avenue N., Seattle, WA 98109. Arrangements were entrusted to Burley Funeral Chapel.

Rodgers, Matthew - Friday, 17 Dec 2004
Matthew Shay Rodgers, 21, died Dec. 17, 2004, from injuries sustained in a one car rollover accident on Jones Road and the Dike Road north of Oak Harbor. He was born Nov. 28, 1983 at Naval Hospital Oak Harbor to Dixie M. (Huey) and Richard J. “Pete” Rodgers, Sr.
Matthew was a lifetime resident of Oak Harbor and a 2002 graduate of Oak Harbor High School. During his lifetime in Oak Harbor, Matthew was active in karate for a time, was also a snow skier, hiker, camper and an avid reader of car magazines and National Geographic. He was known for his quick wit. Matthew also enjoyed spending time with and taking care of his grandmother and was a friend to others.
Matthew Rodgers is survived by his parents, Dixie and Pete Rodgers, his paternal grandmother, Helen Rodgers, all of Oak Harbor, and by his brother Richard J. “Zeik” Rodgers of Seattle, as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Visitation for Matthew Rodgers are Wednesday, Dec. 22 from noon to 6 p.m. at Burley Funeral Chapel with cremation to follow. Private family inurnment will follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to say a prayer for Matthew. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Burley Funeral Chapel, Oak Harbor.

Clyde-Dahlgren, Hazel - Sunday, 05 Dec 2004
Hazel D. Clyde-Dahlgren, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, gardener and former South Whidbey resident, died Dec. 5, 2004. She was born in Comyn, Texas, March 12, 1906, middle child in a family of eight brothers and sisters. She left home at an early age to work as a beautician in Waco, Texas. She married Norman Clyde Nov. 23, 1927, and was given away by the governor of Texas.
Immediately, she and Norman headed to Whidbey Island, as his mother and sister had just passed away. It took one month and 30-some flat tires in a Model-T Ford with an asbestos box with a blow torch over the fuel tank to heat the car to reach the island. In Langley, the couple raised four children.
Hazel was active in school affairs, 4-H, the Langley Methodist Church (including her joy of singing in the choir), Eastern Star as well as “presiding” over the Clyde Theatre every Friday and Saturday night. She was never happier than when working in her garden. According to family, she could grow anything.
After her husband’s death in 1979, she eventually met and married Charles Dahlgren in 1992. They enjoyed three wonderful years before his death in 1995.
Hazel lived the last seven years with her daughter, Joye, on Camano Island and was actively gardening until the last year.
She was preceded in death by husbands Norman and Charles; son Pat; two grandsons; and all her sisters and brothers. She is survived by a son Richard (Audrey); and daughters Joye (Jim) and Judy (Bill); six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
Memorials can be made to the Clyde Theatre Fund in Langley.

Prine, Mariana - Tuesday, 14 Dec 2004
Marian G. Prine, of Oak Harbor, beloved wife for 60 years of Cecil E. Prine, SM/Sgt. USAF (Ret.), died Dec. 14, 2004 at Whidbey General Hospital.
Mrs. Prine was born Jan. 18, 1927, in Leicester, Leicestershire, England, to Gerald Potter and Grace (Middleton) Potter. She was raised in Leicester, where she graduated from high school. World War II was escalating when Marian met Cecil, a young American GI who was a paratrooper for the 82nd Airborne, and about to take part in the Normandy Invasion. They fell in love, and were married March 24, 1945, in St. Mary’s Church, in Saffron Lane in Leicester. (At first, Cecil’s commanding officer was not going to allow the wedding to occur, but special permission from General Eisenhower paved the way, and they proceeded with their plans, thus making Marian a war bride.)
In September 1945, she came to the United States with other war brides, initially settling in Tampa, Fla. Following the war, Cecil re-enlisted in the US Army-Air Corps, and his ensuing career in the Air Force led them to England, Louisiana, Georgia, Florida and California. Following Cecil’s retirement from the Air Force, they settled in Sunnyvale, Calif., for a number of years, before coming to Whidbey Island in 1979. Marian and Cecil’s first home on Whidbey was at Cornet Bay. They also lived at Dewey Beach before moving to Oak Harbor. Marian enjoyed knitting, sewing, needlepoint, crocheting and gardening, and loved being with family.
Marian is survived by her husband Cecil, at home; two daughters, Linda Joans of Oak Harbor and Susan Champagne and husband Dennis of Chewelah; one grandson, Ryan Joans of Oak Harbor. She was preceded in death by a half-brother, Reginald Evans, by her mother in 1994 and her step-father in 1989.
A memorial service was held Dec. 17 at Burley Funeral Chapel, Pastor Laurie Johnson officiating. Inurnment will take place at a later date. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 6315 A&B Fleming, Everett, WA 98201, or to the American Cancer Society, 2120 1st Ave. N., Seattle, WA 98109. Arrangements under direction of Burley Funeral Chapel, Oak Harbor.

Hoover, Virginia - Monday, 13 Dec 2004
Virginia R. Hoover, 92, died Dec. 13, 2004 at Whidbey General Hospital, Coupeville. She was born Sept. 19, 1912, in Muskogee, Okla., to John and Lulu Mae (Fowler) Reber. Following high school, she attended Draughan’s Business College. Virginia was married to Fred W. Hoover, who was also an Oklahoma native.
Fred served with the U.S. Navy during World War II and then joined Crane Packing and Machine Company, working in the oil fields. Virginia followed his career in the oil business. With Fred’s retirement, the Hoovers left the East Coast and settled in the Mariner’s Cove area of Oak Harbor in the late 1970’s.
Virginia was always known as an elegant Southern lady and a great hostess who loved to entertain. She was an active part of the Mariner’s Cove neighborhood. She was also a very talented musician who enjoyed singing, dancing and playing the organ. Her husband Fred of Oak Harbor survives Virginia.
In keeping with Virginia’s wishes, no formal funeral services will be conducted. Cremation was held with private family inurnment to follow. Arrangements are entrusted to Burley Funeral Chapel.
