Bessie Brown
Mrs. Bessie (Grimes) Brown, 93, of 801 Sahara St., Harrisburg, died at 9:50 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, 1998 at Saline Care Center.
She married Edgar Grimes in 1921 and he preceded her in death in 1951. In 1961, she married Miley Brown, who preceded her in death.
Mrs. Brown was born on Dec. 29, 1904, in Saline County, to the late Fred and Nancy Jane (Hall) Edwards.
She was a member of Dorrisville Baptist Church in Harrisburg and the Rebekah Lodge.
Surviving are three daughters, Marjorie Davis of Harrisburg, Loretta Leslit of Richland, Ind. and Wilma Joiner of Punta Gorda, Fla.; 12 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren; and 27 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husbands; her parents; a brother, Fie Edwards; and three sisters, Mae Reed, Hazel Clarke and Stella Edwards.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at Gaskins Funeral Home in Harrisburg, where friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday. The Rev. Mark Haumschilt will officiate and burial will be in Lindale Cemetery at Eldorado.

John E. Hays
John E. Hays, 75, of 616 S. Land St., Harrisburg, died at 10:45 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, 1998 at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Ind.
He was born on May 18, 1923, in Harville, Mo., to the late William and Nola (Dawsey) Hays.
He was a Nursing Aid at Veterans Medical Center and a World War II Army Veteran.
Mr. Hays was a member of Miracle Temple in Wasson and American Legion in Norris City.
On Aug. 6, 1955, he married the former Mildred Thacker. She survives along with a step-sister, Madge Churchwell of Carmi; and many cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by an infant sister, Martha Jean Hays.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Gaskins Funeral Home in Harrisburg, where friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday. The Rev. Tom Flewellen will officiate and burial will be in Union Ridge Cemetery in New Haven.

Lea Ann Moore
Miss Lea Ann Moore, 35, of Queens, N.Y., formerly of Carrier Mills, died at noon Thursday, Oct. 1, 1998, at the home of her sister, Georgia George in Tunnel Hill.
She was the daughter of the late George and Barbara (Coffey) Moore and was born on Aug. 28, 1963, in Eldorado.
Miss Moore was a child care provider in Queens.
She was a member of the Jaycees and attended Carrier Mills Unit 2 Schools, graduating in 1981.
Surviving are a sister and brother-in-law, Georgia and William "Buster" George of Tunnel Hill.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Absher-Nicholson Funeral Home in Carrier Mills.
It was her request that she be cremated. She also requested that flowers be omitted and memorials be made in her memory to the Ovarian Cancer Research or Hospice of Southern Illinois.

Charles G. 'Spud' Cox
Charles G. "Spud" Cox, 75, of 828 Elba Road, Eldorado, died at 12:45 a.m. Friday, Oct. 2, 1998 in Veterans Medical Center, Marion.
He was born on Jan. 1, 1923, in Terre Haute, Ind. to the late Pius C. and Olivia Barbara (Muensterman) Cox.
Mr. Cox was a seven-year Navy veteran and a 13 year Air Force veteran. He was a member of the Farmers Union for eight years
He was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign War, Paducah Skeet Club and National Rifle Association.
On Jan. 27, 1951, he married the former Barbara Sue Wallace. She survives along with two sons, Charles Grant Cox II of Eldorado and Robert W. Cox of Rowlett, Texas; a daughter, Cathey S. Newhouse of Red Bud; a brother, Robert R. Cox of Eldorado; six grandchildren, Jay and Tricia Herman, Chris and Grant Cox III, Brandon and Matt Cox; and a great-granddaughter, Kyrin Rosdil.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Eldorado, where he was a member. Fr. Don Abell will officiate. Burial will be in the Bethesda Cemetery in Pope County with military rites.
Friends may call at Watson Funeral Home in Eldorado Sunday from 4 to 8:30 p.m., where a prayer service will be held at 6 p.m.

Katherine Wilhelm
Mrs. Katherine Wilhelm, 72, of 1101 Moore St., Eldorado, died at 10:36 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, 1998 in Ferrell Hospital at Eldorado.
She was born in Saline County on Feb. 4, 1925, to the late Adrian and Myrtle (Campbell) Reeder.
Surviving are two daughters, Mary Bowers and Joice Wheeler, both of McLeansboro; a brother, Charles Reeder of California; a sister, Laurose Cowan of Eldorado; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Wilhelm and four grandchildren
Graveside services will precede burial at Mount Oval Cemetery near Norris City at 1 p .m. Saturday. Those attending should go directly to the cemetery.
There will be no visitation at Watson Funeral Home in Eldorado.

Martha Almon
Mrs. Martha Almon, 56, of Knoxville, Iowa, formerly of Shawneetown, died Thursday, Oct. 1, 1998, in Iowa.
She was married to Marvin Almon on Nov. 15, 1958. He survives, along with two sons, Bobby Almon of Albuquerque, N.M., and Randy Almon of Ottumwa, Iowa; a daughter, Anna Larson of Shawneetown; a brother, David Thompson of Hopkinsville, Ky.; and five grandchildren.
Mrs. Almon was born in Beulah, Ky., on July 11, 1942, to the late David and Hazel (Crook) Thompson.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998 at Cox and Son Funeral Home in Shawneetown, where visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday. The Rev. Allen Porter will officiate. Burial will be in Westwood Cemetery in Shawneetown.

Curwin Gregory
Curwin Gregory, 77, of Eldorado, formerly of Galatia, died Thursday, Oct. 1, 1998, at 3 p.m. at Harrisburg Medical Center.
He was born on Aug. 2, 1921, in Galatia, to the late Martin and Nettie (Jones) Gregory.
He was retired from the U.S. Gypsum Paper Co. in Indiana.
Surviving are two sons, Ed Gregory and Mike Gregory, both of Cape Coral, Fla.; four grandchildren; and a close friend, Virginia Hudgins of Eldorado. He was preceded in death by three half-sisters, and a half- brother.
Funeral arrangements are pending at Sloan Funeral Home in Galatia.

Robert Lee Ballard
Robert Lee Ballard, 65, of Shawneetown, died Thursday, Nov. 12, 1998 at 5:50 p.m. in St. Anthony's Hospital in Effingham.
He was born on Feb. 17, 1933, in Eldorado, to the late Otto and Beatrice (Johnson) Ballard.
Surviving are a companion, Pauline Fann; three daughters, Kimberly Kempton of Senecaville, Ohio, Rhonda Fann of Shawneetown, and Tina Marie Fann of Harrisburg; two sons, Robin Ballard and Marvin Lee Fann, both of Shawneetown; 14 grandchildren; two brothers, Donald Ballard of Shawneetown, and Dewey Johnson of Eldorado; and two sisters, Marlene Mills of Equality and Marieta Wyatt of Olney.
He was preceeded in death by a daughter, Sharon Ballard, and a brother, Kevin Ballard.
The body has been cremated. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Vickery Funeral Home, Shawneetown Chapel. The family will receive friends after noon Saturday.

Effie A. Burklow
Mrs. Effie A. Burklow, 92, of 1109 Kerr St., Eldorado, died at 10:55 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, 1998, at the home of a daughter.
She was married on Sept. 29, 1929, in Eldorado to William C. Burklow. He preceded her in death on Aug. 17, 1976.
She was born on Aug. 14, 1906, in Gallatin County, to the late Wiley S. and Isabelle (Bishop) Brown.
Mrs. Burklow was a charter member of Scott Street Baptist Church in Eldorado.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. William C. (Wanda) Burklow of Eldorado; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and The Art Watson and Wanda and Henry Milligan, all of Eldorado; a brother, Francis Brown of Warren, Mich.; a sister, Madeline Rister of Eldorado; four grandchildren, Bob Milligan, Steve Watson, Beth Rister, and Clint Burklow; eight great-grandchildren, Jeff Milligan, Bridget Milligan, Jennifer Belcher, Justin Rister, Bryant Rister, Suzanne Maloney, Ben Maloney, and Andrew Watson; and one great-great-grandchild, Maisey Belcher.
She was preceded in death by an infant son; a brother, Claud Brown, two sisters, Ella Carroll and Marie Watson, and a granddaughter, Vickie Maloney.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Watson Funeral Home in Eldorado, where friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday. The Rev. Art Watson will officiate and burial will be in Wolf Creek Cemetery in Eldorado.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to VNA Hospice or the Vickie Maloney Scholarship Fund and may be left at the funeral home.

Lucille Stansell
Mrs. Lucille Stansell, 79, of Golconda, formerly of Cleveland, Ala., died Thursday, Nov. 12, 1998 at Western Baptist Hospital in Paducah, Ky.
Services will be held at 6 p.m. Friday at Aly Funeral Home in Golconda, where visitation will be held at 5 p.m. Friday. The Rev. E. J. Cole will officiate.
Graveside services will precede burial at 1 p.m. Sunday in Cleveland.

Donald L. Benham
Donald L. Benham, 44, of 3001 Lake Drive, Evansville, Ind., died of an apparent heart attack Sunday morning, Nov. 8, 1998, at his home.
He was formerly employed at Bristol Myers for 20 years and had formerly worked at both the North Park Veterinary Clinic and for Dr. Daniel Grim, veterinarian.
Mr. Benham was a graduate of North High School, past president of Eagles Aerie 427, Indiana Eagles and Council of Clubs, and past state president of the Eagles. He was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 64, Scottish Rites, Hadi Shrine and Owls.
Surviving are his parents, Venita (Bailey) and Otis L. Benham of Evansville. His mother was a former resident of Carrier Mills. Other survivors are a sister and brother-in-law, Gale Ann and Galen Avery; two nephews, Brian and Jason Avery, all of Bowling Green, Ky.; and several cousins.
He was the grandson of the late Fred and Nellie Bailey of Carrier Mills.
Services were held Nov. 4 at Browning Funeral Home in Evansville, Ind.

John L. Murphy
Funeral services for John L. Murphy, 73, of 16180 Windermere Circle, Southgate, Mich., formerly of Eldorado, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Colonial Terrace Funeral Home in Eldorado, where friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday. The Rev. Barry Winders will officiate and burial will be in Wolf Creek Cemetery in Eldorado. Fannie Morris
Services for Mrs. Fannie Morris, 90, of Dixon, a former resident of Equality, will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Equality. The Rev. Ron Johnson will officiate. Visitation will be Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Jones Funeral Home of Equality.
Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery near Equality.

Denzil Clay Wilkinson
Services for Denzil Clay Wilkinson, 85, of Eldorado, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Colonial Terrance Funeral Home in Eldorado, where friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday. The Rev. Sam Vaughn will officiate and burial will be in Wolf Creek Cemetery at Eldorado, where military rites will be performed.

Genevieve Quick
Mrs. Genevieve Quick, 82, of Ledford, died at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17, 1998, at the home of a daughter, Yulondia Nolen. Further family details and funeral arrangements will be announced later from Absher-Nicholson Funeral Home in Carrier Mills.
