Robert Lee Evans
Robert Lee Evans, 84, of Ojai, died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001 at his home. He was born April 4, 1917, in Pocola, Okla., to James Robert Evans and Ruth Ellen (Higgins) Evans, and had been a resident of Ventura County for more than 55 years.
He married Flora K. Birch on July 27, 1938, in Spiro, Okla., where he worked on the railroad. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army as a military police. When the war was over he decided to move his family to California, where he went to work for Shell Oil Company, remaining with them for 25 years.
Since Mr. Evans never lost his Oklahoma accent, he was forever known as "Okie Bob." His interests included hunting and fishing; his photo with a huge thresher shark he caught from the Ventura Pier ran in the Star Free Press.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Flora Evans of Ojai; his six children, Doris Benoit, Carolyn Holland, Barbara Reames, Clara Guzikowski, Ray Evans and Robert Charles Evans; sisters Pauline Parks of Spiro, Okla., and Faye Ellen Evans of Oklahoma; 14 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Evans was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Claude, Leza and Guy, all of Spiro, and grandson Curtis Holland.
Friends may call today from noon to 8 p.m. at Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai. Graveside services will be held Saturday, Jan. 5, at 11 a.m. at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park in Ventura, with Pastor Scott Harrell officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice at Help of Ojai.
Arrangements are under the direction of Clausen Funeral Home.

Violet Elinor Boise
Violet Elinor Boise, 80, of Ojai, died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at her home surrounded by family after a lengthy illness. She was born June 7, 1921, in San Diego, Calif.
Mrs. Boise's interests included gardening, family and reading, especially keeping up on world and current events.
She is survived by her husband, George Boise of Ojai; daughter and son-in-law Louise and Ron Konstanzer of Ojai; daughter April of Valley Center and husband Paul Sodeman of Escondido; and grandchildren Jeff Konstanzer and Shelley DeLano of Ojai, and Greg, David, Steven and Brian Sodeman of Valley Center.
The family is thankful for the care given Mrs. Boise by her care givers.
Memorial services are pending. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Lung Association or a favorite charity.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Neptune Society.

Phyllis Bastorde Fry
Phyllis Bastorde Fry, 93, a 41-year resident of Ojai, died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, at her home. She was born April 4, 1908, in Deabole, Cornwall, England. She immigrated to Ventura with her parents, Ernest and Nellie Bastorde, in 1912.
She graduated from Ventura High School in 1927, and then attended the University of California at Los Angeles, where she met her future husband, William J. Fry, a flying cadet at March Field.
After living in various cities across the United States pursuing Mr. Fry's career with the Air Force and as a commercial airline pilot, the Frys returned to Ojai in 1960.
Mrs. Fry was well-known for her many activities in the Ojai Valley, including Little House, Ojai Music Festivals Committee, Mary A. Livermore Society, and the Ojai Valley Garden Club, where her flowers and arrangements won many awards at the annual Garden Show.
She is survived by her husband, William J. Fry Sr., and son William J. Fry Jr., both of Ojai; daughter Sheila Fry Hornbostel of Williamsburg, Va.; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held today at 2 p.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Ojai. Friends and family are invited to attend and celebrate her life. A reception will follow in St. Thomas Aquinas Center.
Arrangements are under the direction of McDermott-Crockett Mortuary in Santa Barbara.

Laurel H. Fielder
Laurel H. Fielder, 47, of Ojai, died Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, in Northridge, Calif., following a lengthy illness. She was born March 11, 1954, in Pratt, Kan., and lived in Ojai for 40 years.
Ms. Fielder graduated from Nordhoff High School and attended college in Los Angeles. She was very involved in the Ojai United Methodist Church and appreciated their visits, thoughts and prayers. Her family wishes to thank her best friends, Robin and Lynn Chambliss, for their unconditional love and support.
Ms. Fielder is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Lyndall Alexander and Darrel, of Ventura; brothers Bill, Danny, Roger, Ron and Richard Rhoades, all from the Ventura-Ojai area; niece Anna and husband Wayne Wilson of Ventura; niece Raquel and husband Pierre Champagne of Bakersfield; nieces Emily and Chessa Rhoades, and Heather and Ashley Rhoades; nephews John and Micke Rhoades; two great-nieces; and two great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Helene Rhoades, and brother Dallas Rhoades.
Friends and family are welcome to attend a graveside service Saturday, Jan. 5, at 11 a.m. at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park in Ventura, with the Rev. David Burgeson officiating.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Craig Warren Kinne
Craig Warren Kinne, 47, of Sisters, Ore., died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002, after an automobile accident. He was born July 5, 1954, in Valdosta, Ga.
He was a 1972 graduate of Nordhoff High School in Ojai, and attended California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, where he was a member of Delta Tau fraternity.
Mr. Kinne was a licensed general contractor, private pilot and a commercial truck driver. His interests included fishing and hunting. He moved to Central Oregon in 1989.
He is survived by his parents, Warren and Doreen Kinne, of Sisters, Ore.; daughter Nicole Marie Kinne of Bend, Ore.; son Tyler Craig Kinne of Fallbrook, Calif.; sisters Donna Kinne of Ojai, and Linda Kinne-Johnson of Squaw Valley, Calif.; and three nieces and two nephews.
A memorial service celebrating his life will be held today at 1 p.m. at the Aspen Hall, Shevlin Park, Bend, Ore. His family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to BMT Foundation, Acct. #25578, OHS Foundation, 1121 Southwest Salmon, Portland, OR 97205, Attn: Tai.
Arrangements are under the direction of Autumn Funerals in Bend, Ore.

Dante Cardella
Dante Cardella, 82, of Oak View, died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002, at Ojai Valley Community Hospital. He was born July 1, 1919, in Oak Park, Ill., and was a Ventura County resident for 19 years.
Mr. Cardella was a construction contractor.
Visitation was held Tuesday, Jan. 8, from noon to 5 p.m. at Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai. Private graveside services will be held at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park in Ventura.
Arrangements are under the direction of Clausen Funeral Home.

Jess M. Ramirez
Jess M. Ramirez, 77, of Ojai, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, at Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura following a short illness. He was born June 19, 1924, in Whittier, Calif., and had lived in Ojai since 1957.
Mr. Ramirez was the owner of Ojai Valley Upholstery. He was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, where he served as eucharistic minister. He was also a member of the Senior Men's Golf Club at Soule Park Golf Course.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Dela Ramirez, of Ojai; daughter and son-in-law Nancy R. and David Moore of Morro Bay; son and daughter-in-law Jess M. Jr. and Delia Ramirez of Ojai; sons David Ramirez of Steamboat Springs, Colo., Paul Ramirez, John Ramirez and Steven Ramirez, all of Ojai; son and daughter-in-law Richard and Dellanise Ramirez of Ventura; sister and brother-in-law Sarah and Bill Salas of Glendale, Calif.; sister Annie Hernandez of Ventura; and 10 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Ray Ramirez.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, Jan. 12, at 10 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Ojai, with Father Patrick Keane, O.S.A., officiating. Rosary will be recited today at 7:30 p.m., also at St. Thomas Aquinas Church.
Memorials may be made to St. Thomas Aquinas Church Building Fund.

Clark B. Gathercole
Clark B. Gathercole, 82, of Ojai, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, after a brief illness. He was born Aug. 5, 1919, in Vermont.
Mr. Gathercole was a commercial pilot, continuing his flying career after serving in the U.S.Army Air Corps in World War II. He piloted a B-17 Flying Fortress with the 2nd Bombardment Group, 96th Squadron, Tunisia, and completed 50 missions over Sicily and Italy.
After returning home, he flew for several airlines and was Ventura County's director of airports in 1961. He finished his flying career in 1980 as senior captain for Global Associates at Kwajalein, Atoll, Marshall Islands.
His interests included reading, polical discussions, storytelling and NFL football.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Grace Harris Gathercole; daughters and sons-in-law Judith and Preston Plumb of Steamboat Springs, Colo., and Carol and Alan Olson of Ojai; four grandsons; one granddaughter; and one great-granddaughter.
Mr. Gathercole was preceded in death by his son, Gary.
Per his request, there will be no funeral service. A gathering to celebrate his life will be held Saturday, Feb. 2, from 2 to 4 p.m. at his home in Ojai. Call (805) 646-8607 for information.

Madge Doris Barclay
Madge Doris Barclay, 94, of Ojai, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at Ojai Valley Community Hospital. She was born Feb. 6, 1907, in Montana, and lived in Ventura County for 51 years.
Mrs. Barclay was a licensed vocational nurse and had worked at Ventura County Medical Center.
She is survived by her son, William E. Barclay, of Ojai.
Arrangements are under the direction of Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai.

Theodora "Burnsie" Burns
Theodora "Burnsie" Burns, 90, of Ojai, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at her home after a lengthy illness. She was born May 1, 1911, in Lake Geneva, Wis., and had lived in Ojai for 39 years, coming from Waukesha, Wis.
Mrs. Burns was a homemaker and a member of the Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Ojai.
The family would like to give special thanks to her care giver, Zephyr Hagopian.
Mrs. Burns is survived by her daughter, Mary Alice Burns, of Ojai, and was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Burns.
Visitation was held Tuesday, Jan. 15, at Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai. Funeral services are being held today at 1 p.m. at Clausen Funeral Home, with Pastor Harold W. Ruddick officiating. Interment will follow at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park in Ventura.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation of Little House of Ojai.
Arrangements are under the direction of Clausen Funeral Home.

Bernard S. Behrendt
Bernard S. Behrendt, 77, of Oak View, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002. He was born June 15, 1924, in Michigan.
Mr. Behrendt is survived by his three sons.
Private family services will be held.

Lois Jean Reese
Former Ojai resident Lois Jean Reese, 72, of Lake Almanor, Calif., died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, in Ojai after a brief illness. She was born Sept. 17, 1929, in Huntington Park, Calif. She lived in Ojai for 31 years.
Mrs. Reese was an account supervisor with Security Bank, and a member of the Ojai Presbyterian Church, where she served as treasurer. Her interests included bridge and golf.
She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Merle Reese, of Lake Almanor; son and daughter-in-law Brian and Esther Reese of Reno, Nev.; daughter and son-in-law Carol and Bob Cawley of Springfield, Ill.; brothers and sisters-in-law Earl and Gloria Tyler of Santa Barbara, and Ross and Vi Tyler of Whittier; and six grandchildren.
Visitation was held Monday at Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 16, at 10 a.m. at Ojai Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Jeff Holland officiating. Interment followed at Conejo Mountain Memorial Park in Camarillo.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association. Arrangements were under the direction of Clausen Funeral Home.

Teresa Strain-Mohn
Teresa Strain-Mohn, 37, of Ventura, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, at Community Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness. She was born June 21, 1964, in Long Beach, Calif., and lived in Ojai for seven years, coming from The Dalles, Ore.
Mrs. Strain-Mohn was a homemaker. She also worked as a customer service representative, and was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Ventura Third Ward.
She is survived by her husband, David Mohn, and daughters Kendra and Adria Mohn, all of Ventura; parents Eugene and Betty Strain of Ojai; sisters Janine Strain of Albany, Ore., and Tamara Colwell of Porterville, Calif.; and grandfather Ray Yearsley of Hamer, Idaho.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Desiree McCoy.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, Jan. 17, at 10 a.m. at Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai, with Bishop Barry Zimmerman officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
Arrangements are under the direction of Clausen Funeral Home.

Ralph T. Singleton
Ralph T. Singleton, 83, of Ojai, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura. He was born Feb. 28, 1918, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
A resident of Ojai since 1960, he worked for the Southern California Gas Company for 20 years and the Ojai Unified School District for 10 years. He spent time with his friends at Little House and Whispering Oaks.
Mr. Singleton is survived by his daughter, Stephanie Adams, of Medford, Ore.; son Alastair Singleton of Santa Barbara; sister Laura Cunningham of Canada; ex-wife Miriam Jones of Medford, Ore.; and granddaughter Lindsay Adams.
Private services will be held in Medford.
Arrangements are under the direction of McDermott-Crockett Mortuary in Santa Barbara.

Susan M. Oppedisano
Susan M. Oppedisano, 84, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at Ojai Valley Community Hospital following a lengthy illness. She was born Aug. 16, 1917, in Chicago, Ill.
Mrs. Oppedisano was a homemaker and her interests included playing bingo.
She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Harry Oppedisano; children Patricia Ferreri of Park Ridge, Ill., Chuck Domanico of Hollywood, Calif., and LuAnne Hutchings of Monterey Peninsula, Calif.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Mina Bowie Werber
Mina Bowie Werber, 65, of Ojai, died Monday, Jan. 14, 2002, following a battle with cancer. She was born April 11, 1936, in Ventura, and resided in Ojai her entire life.
She attended Nordhoff/Ojai schools, kindergarten through 12th grade. While in high school, she was an athlete participating in several sports and was active in G.A.A., serving as vice president, then president. She also received the Rudolph Drewes Award for outstanding sportsmanship.
After high school, she graduated from Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa, nd then attended the University of California at Santa Barbara.
Mrs. Werber worked as a teller in Ojai's Bank of America for 10 years and then became an optometric assistant for Ojai Valley Optometric, where she provided service for 25 years. She was an active lifetime member of the Community of Christ Church in Ventura.
Her interests included gardening, camping and decorating her home.
She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Marvin Werber; sons and daughters-in-law Mike and Jennifer of Ojai, and Mark and Shari of Coarsegold; mother Hattie Bowie of Ojai; brother and sister-in-law Bill and JoAnne Bowie of Ventura; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father, William Bowie.
The family wishes to express gratitude to the care givers of Livingston Hospice and the many friends who provided support.
Memorial donations may be made to a favorite charity.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 19, at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Ojai, 930 Grand Ave.
