Marjorie Jane Davis
Marjorie Jane Davis, 79, of Ojai, died Wednesday, May 15, 2002, at Ojai Valley Community Hospital. She was born March 10, 1923, in Chicago, Ill., and had lived in Ojai for 33 years.
She was born to John Emil and Ida Marie Kieding of Chicago, and she attended Shimer College in Mount Carroll, Ill., from 1941 to 1942. She moved to Los Angeles in 1942 and worked as a secretary. She married Joseph Allen Davis in 1958. In 1969 she moved with her husband and two children to Ojai.
Mrs. Davis was a salesclerk and homemaker, and a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Ojai. She worked part-time as a salesclerk in Ventura at The Broadway, and later at J.C. Penney. Her interests included painting, especially landscapes.
She is survived by her husband, Joseph Allen Davis, of Ojai; son Joseph Allen Davis Jr. of Ojai; daughter Gail Marie Davis of Ojai; sister Genevieve Marie Ebbesmeyer of Seattle, Wash.; and six nephews.
Arrangements are under the direction of Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 25, at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Ojai, 409 Topa Topa Drive. The Rev. Coryl J. Lassen will officiate.

Herschel L. Corbin
Herschel L. Corbin, 96, died at his home in Ojai Thursday, May 16, 2002. He was born Aug. 28, 1905, in Gladewater, Texas, and had lived in Ojai for 30 years.
Mr. Corbin was a heavy-duty equipment operator and a member of Local No. 12 Operating Engineers for 54 years. He was also a builder and farmer.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Helen Corbin; son William Corbin; daughter Catherine Moore; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous step-relatives.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Frances Corbin, and daughter Connie Ogren.
Visitation was held May 18 from 2 to 8 p.m. at Clausen Funeral Home, and a memorial service was held at the funeral home May 19 at 1 p.m., with Pastor Scott Harrell officiating. Private interment was at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier.
Arrangements were under the direction of Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai.

Dola M. (Smith) Horton
Dola M. (Smith) Horton, 89, died Friday, May 24, 2002 in Luther, Okla. She was born June 29, 1912 in Vista, Okla., to Jim and Maud Smith, and grew up in Maud, Okla. The family moved to California in 1940.
In 1950, she moved to 99 Kunkle Street in Oak View, and lived there for 50 years before declining health caused her to move to Luther, Okla., to be closer to her three children.
Over the years, she managed variety stories in Casitas Springs and Oak View, and later worked for the Village Pharmacy in Ojai.
Mrs. Horton is survived by her daughter, Betty Muehlenweg, of Luther, Okla.; sons and daughters-in-law J.B. and Sue Dodson, and Bill and Joyleen Dodson, all of New Braunfels, Texas; sister and brother-in-law Fay and Gene Thompson of Pismo Beach, Calif.; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two nephews and one niece.
Graveside services with interment will be held Thursday, May 30, 2002 at Arlington Memory Gardens, Midwest City, Okla.
Arrangements are under the direction of Bill Eisenhour Funeral Homes, Inc.

Jacqueline Badgley Christensen
Jacqueline Badgley Christensen, 76, of Ojai, died Saturday, May 25, 2002 in Oxnard. She was born Jan. 2, 1926 in Orange, Calif., and was a Ventura County resident for the past 30 years.
She graduated from Poly High School in Long Beach in 1944 and was an electronics assembler for Raytheon for 15 years.
Mrs. Christensen is survived by her daughters, Rita Smith, of Ojai, and Carol Smith, of Santa Barbara; and her son, Anthony R. Smith, of Ojai.
Arrangments are under the direction of Joseph P. Reardon Funeral Home in Ventura.

Barbara N. Hunt
Barbara N. Hunt, 59, of Ojai, died Saturday, May 25, 2002 at Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura following a lengthy illness. She was born Nov. 1, 1942 in Fort Worth, Texas, and had lived in Ojai for 59 years.
Mrs. Hunt was a member of the Ojai Valley Baptist Church and a 1962 graduate of Nordhoff High School. She was also a graduate of the FBI School of Composite Artists in Virginia.
She is survived by son Jim Hunt of Los Angeles; daughter Annelle Leesa Henselman of Medford, Ore.; brother Phillip Sims of El Paso, Texas; three grandchildren; and one nephew.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Hunt, in 1988.
Visitation will be Thursday, May 30, from 2 to 8 p.m. at Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai.
Graveside services will be held Friday, May 31, at 1 p.m. at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park in Ventura, with Pastor Scott Harrell officiating.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Arrangements are under the direction of Clausen Funeral Home.

Mary Bernadette Ladner Garey
Mary Bernadette Ladner Garey, 89, of Ojai, died Thursday, May 23, 2002. She was born Aug. 15, 1912 in Mobile, Ala., and spent most of her adult life as a resident of Mississippi. She had lived in Ojai since 1998.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, actress Diane Ladd and Robert C. Hunter; her granddaughter, actress Laura Dern and Ben Harper; stepchildren Amy and Milan Oleson, Emily Hunter and Brandon and Kristen Hunter; and two great-grandsons.
She was preceded in death by granddaughter Diane Elizabeth Dern, and by her husbands, Daniel Garey and Preston Paul Ladner.
Mrs. Garey, a housewife by profession, had also appeared in several films as an actress and was on the cover of the London publication, Hello Magazine, and the book, "Mothers and Daughters," along with Diane and Laura, both Oscar nominees. She worked to protect stray dogs and cats and owned a Pomeranian and seven cats.
A private graveside service was held May 28 at the Santa Barbara Cemetery, with Father Virgil of the Old Mission Santa Barbara presiding, and a celebration of life memorial service was held in the city of Ojai.
Arrangements were under the direction of Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai.
Mrs. Merrington is survived by her son, Floyd L. Clawson, of Ventura; daughter Betty Banks of Great Bend; sister Dorothy Hagen of Sapulpa, Okla; five grandchildren, including Dr. Gordon Clawson of Ojai; nine great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Cremation has taken place. A private family inurnment will be held at the Great Bend Cemetery at a later date.
A memorial fund for the First United Methodist Church is in care of the funeral home.

Agnes Merrington
Agnes Merrington, 89, of Great Bend, Kan., died Saturday, May 25, 2002. She was born Dec. 11, 1912 in Great Bend to Perry and Gertrude Hoadley Flory. She had been a resident of Great Bend for 64 years.
She married Kenneth Clawson on June 9, 1928 in Hoisington, Kan. She married her second husband, Vi Cal Merrington, on Oct. 5, 1953 in Long Beach, Calif.
She was a former clerk at Montgomery Ward in Great Bend, and was also a floral designer in Long Beach. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Order of Eastern Star (lifetime member) in Great Bend, and a member of Central Kansas Thread Benders Quilt Guild.

Doris Kasman
Doris Kasman, 77, of Ojai, died Tuesday, May 28, 2002 at Royal Gardens in Ojai without pain of natural causes. She was born Dec. 26, 1924 in New York, N.Y., and lived in Ojai for two years, coming from Laguna Hills, Calif., where she had retired.
Mrs. Kasman was a member of the B'nai Brith Sisterhood and the Brandeis Association. Her interests incluced ceramic art, films and world travel.
She is survived by her daughter, Laurel Hunter and wife Sara Hawley-Hunter of Ojai; son and daughter-in-law Kenneth and Kathy Jo Kasman of Winnetka, Calif.; and one granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Sidney Zalic Kasman.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, June 2, at 1 p.m. at the Jewish Community of the Oaks in Ojai, Temple K'hilat ha Aloneem, with Rabbi Hochberg-Miller officiating.
At her request, her ashes will be scattered off the Ventura coastline.
Arrangements are under the direction of Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai.

James Albert "Jim" Goforth
James Albert "Jim" Goforth, 82, formerly of Ojai, died Wednesday, March 6, 2002 in Bend, Ore., of pneumonia. He was born Jan. 17, 1920 in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
He married Edeen Marlow on Nov. 1, 1941 in Yuma, Ariz. In November of 1944 he moved his family to Ojai where they lived for the next 32 years.His three daughters, Jeanne, Diana and Kim, attended the local schools, all graduating from Nordhoff High School, where his wife, "Deen," was librarian.
His interests included riding the mountain trails of Los Padres National Forest. He was an active member of the Ventura County Saddle Club and served as its president for two years. Mr. Goforth worked for 20 years with Sears in Ventura.
On July 28, 1974 he married Dorothy "Jerry" Nickerson of Ojai, moving soon afterward to Bend, Ore., with his new family, including Jerry's daughters, Tami and Janet. In Bend, Mr. Goforth and a partner opened Pinewood Appliance Repair in September 1974. Retiring in 1985, he and Jerry traveled for several years throughout the United States and Canada.
He is survived by his wife, Jerry, of Bend, Ore.; daughters Jeanne Greatorex of Watsonville, Calif., Diana Clark and Kim Goforth, both of Seattle, Wash.; stepsons Robert Nickerson and David Nickerson, both of Baytown, Texas; stepdaughters Katherine Seeley of Auburn, Maine, Tami Johnson of Corvallis, Ore., and Janet Wojciechowski of Bend; sister Gladys King of Shelton, Wash.; 18 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Goforth was preceded in death by his two brothers.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Newberry Hospice of La Pine, 51480 Huntington Road, La Pine, OR 97739.
Deschutes Memorial Funeral Home in Bend, Ore., was in charge of arrangements. His ashes were interred in the Deschutes Memorial Gardens, along with the ashes of Roland Daniel "Danny" Nickerson, the eldest son of Jerry and her first husband, the late Ernest Hamilton Nickerson. Danny died in 1960 in Ojai.

Mildred Ruth Gage
Mildred Ruth Gage, 85, formerly of Ojai, died Wednesday, June 5, 2002 in Montrose, Colo. The cause of death was heart failure resulting from non-Hodgkins lymphoma.
She was a graduate of Congers High School and a homemaker whose interests included restoring antiques, gardening and sports. In 1980, she and her husband moved from Valley Cottage, N.Y., to Ojai, to be closer to her family.
Widowed in 1998, Mrs. Gage moved to New City, N.Y., to live with her sister, Evelyn Fasano. Most recently, she resided with her son and daughter-in-law in Colorado. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, George and Beth Gage, of Telluride, Colo.; sisters Evelyn Fasano and Wilma Peaslee; brother George Winstedt; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd J. Gage, in 1998.
A family memorial service is planned for New York in July.

Aline B. Ginter
Aline B. Ginter, 74, of Ojai, died Thursday, June 6, 2002 at Ojai Valley Community Hospital. She was born Dec. 16, 1927 in Oklahoma, and had lived in Ojai since 1977, coming from Pasadena, Calif.
Mrs. Ginter was owner-operator of Frontier Paint in Ojai with her husband, Charles.
She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Charles "Chuck" Ginter, of Ojai; daughters Peggy Wallweber of Phoenix, Ariz., Sandra Badillo of Half Moon Bay, Calif., and Tammy Ginter of Ojai; daughter and son-in-law Lynell and Todd Graham of Pasadena, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Services were held June 10 at Clausen Funeral Home, with Pastor Scott Harrell officiating. Interment was at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills at noon on June 11.
Memorials may be made to the Breast Cancer Fund in San Francisco.
Arrangements are under the direction of Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai.

Charles Frank Curtis & Barbara "Brandy" Elaine Swain Curtis
Charles Frank Curtis, 74, of Ojai, died Friday, June 7, 2002 in a plane crash on South Mountain near Ojai, Calif., along with his wife, Barbara "Brandy" Curtis. Mr. Curtis was born Sept. 26, 1927 in Carpinteria, Calif., and had lived in Ojai since 1988.
Mr. Curtis was a retired general manager and current board member for Ventura River County Water District. He was a highly experienced, 30-year private pilot and a member of the Santa Paula Pilots Association. He was also a life member of the Carpinteria Masonic Temple #444. His interests included traveling with his wife, Barbara.
He is survived by his son, Charles "Chuck" John Curtis, of Durango, Colo.; sisters Gloria Fredericks of Gardena, Calif., and Patricia Rowe of Santa Maria, Calif.; and brother John "Jack" P. Curtis of Ojai.
Barbara Elaine Curtis, also known as "Brandy," 68, died Friday, June 7, 2002 in the plane crash. She was born Sept. 15, 1933 in Roosevelt, Utah, to Shelby and Marion Swain. She lived in Vernal, Utah, until her marriage to Max Bliss Hales, when they moved to Spanish Fork, Utah. She was preceded in death by her parents and former husband, Max Hales.
She met and married Charles Curtis and they moved to Ojai 14 years ago. They purchased a small airplane and spent weekends flying to dinner, had fly-ins with friends and took trips to family members out of state.
Mrs. Curtis worked at Second Helpings Thrift Store and helped neighbors and friends. She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
She is survived by her three children, Allan Hales, Chris B. Hales and Bell Martinez; brother Enoch Swain; sisters Iris Rae Hacking, Betty Wyeth, Diane Hall and Susan Johansen; 15 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Family and friends are invited to funeral services being held today at 10 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Ojai. Interment will follow at Carpinteria Cemetery, 1501 Cravens Lane, Carpinteria.
The family expresses sincere thanks to family and friends who have helped during this time of sorrow.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Second Helpings Thrift Store (Construction Project), 111 W. Santa Ana St., Ojai, CA 93023.

Thomas J. Hartigan
Thomas J. Hartigan, 86, of Ojai, died Friday, June 14, 2002 in Oak View. He was born July 5, 1915 in Roscrea, Ireland, and lived in Ojai for 13 years. He was a Ventura County resident since 1964, coming from Chicago, Ill.
Mr. Hartigan had been a farmer, a union carpenter and a machinist.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was a eucharistic minister. His interests included gardening, baseball, woodworking and crossword puzzles.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Theresa Hartigan; grandchildren Ciaran and Sarah; and niece Donna McIntyre.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 31 years, Marie; brothers John, Tim, Pat and Eddie; and sisters Mary Ann, Kattie, Bridget, Albeus and Ambrosia.
Rosary will be recited Friday, June 21, at 7 p.m. at St. Joseph's Health and Retirement Center Chapel in Ojai. Mass will be celebrated at the chapel Saturday, June 22, at 11 a.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or to St. Joseph's Health and Retirement Center.

Maude Savage
Maude Savage, 91, of Ojai, died Friday, June 4, 2002 at Ojai Valley Community Hopsital Skilled Nursing Unit. She was born Feb. 24, 1911 at her home in Santa Barbara, and moved to Ojai 32 years ago.
Mrs. Savage was a homemaker.
She is survived by her daughter, Karen Chappell, of Ojai; granddaughters Lynn Chappell of La Selva Beach, Calif., and Janice Palmer of Ojai; grandson Keven Chappell of Las Vegas, Nev.; sister Marian L. Frowiss of Tehachapi, Calif.; two great-grandchildren; and two nieces and two nephews.
The family sends a special thanks to the staff at the OVCH Skilled Nursing Unit.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, Ojai Affiliate.

Mary Nell Sullivan
Mary Nell Sullivan, 74, formerly of Ojai, died Wednesday, June 12, 2002 at a hospital in Dalton, Ga. She was born Sept. 27, 1927 in Gilmore County, Georgia.
For 30 years, Mrs. Sullivan was owner-operator of The Wheel bar and restaurant at Wheelers Gorge where she opened her door to many people who passed through and held a Christmas party every year open to all her friends.
After retiring from The Wheel, she was in ill health for some time and last year moved back to Georgia to live with her sister. Her health improved for some time, until she was rushed to the hospital three weeks ago.
She is survived by her son, John Mansfield Sullivan, of Ventura; sister Bernice Brindle of Dalton, Ga.; niece Charlotte and nephew James, both of Georgia.
Funeral services and burial were held June 14 in Dalton, Ga. Arrangements were under the direction of Ponders Funeral Home.

Evelyn Mildred Landucci
Evelyn Mildred Landucci, 82, of Ojai, died Tuesday, June 11, 2002 after a long illness. She was born Evelyn Mildren Yudin on Jan. 14, 1920 in Lynn, Mass.
She grew up in Boston, New York, and the surrounding areas. After graduating from high school, she worked as a secretary while studying to become a pilot and taking classes at Boston University. She met her first husband, Enoch Kaufer, a recent immigrant from Austria, when she applied to work as a secretary in his accounting office in Boston. They were married in 1942. Shortly thereafter, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and they moved to Virginia Beach, Va., where she supported the war effort working in various personnel departments for the U.S. government.
Around 1944, Evelyn moved to San Diego, Calif., when Enoch was transferred there to serve as one of the first naval radar instructors. She continued to work in government personnel until the end of the war. They moved to Hollywood, Calif., where her first son Lanny was born in 1946. Michael followed him in 1948 just before the Kaufers moved to Sun Valley, Calif., where Enoch began practicing law. Two more children were born, John in 1955 and Gilda in 1958, before Enoch died in 1960. Evelyn developed her interests in painting and the human potential movement while working as a medical secretary and raising her four children.
In 1967, Evelyn married Frank Landucci. They bought Wheeler Hot Springs and moved to Ojai in 1969. Escrow closed a few weeks before the devastating flood that virtually destroyed their new resort property. By 1973, Mr. and Mrs. Landucci were able to open the hot mineral baths, followed in 1975 by their popular landmark restaurant Casa Landucci in Wheeler's historic lodge. After selling the property in 1980, they opened another Italian-themed restaurant, Landucci's, in downtown Ojai, while Evelyn also took up the study of law. When the property came back into the family's hands in 1985, her son, John, managed it until his untimely death in 1987. Evelyn and Frank stepped back in with the help of son and daughter-in-law Lanny and Harmony Kaufer and once again turned the resort into a successful business. Since the sale of the business in 1993, the Landuccis have traveled and enjoyed their retirement in Ojai.
Mrs. Landucci is survived by her husband, Frank Landucci, of Ojai; sons Lanny and Michael Kaufer of Ojai; daughter Gilda Wheeler of Seattle; and four grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Arrangements were under the direction of McDermott-Crockett Mortuary in Santa Barbara.

Ruth Koster Burke
Ruth Koster Burke, 97, longtime resident of Ojai, died from natural causes Saturday, June 15, 2002 in Northridge. She was born May 22, 1905 in Los Angeles.
She was a founding member of Kappa Theta Chapter of Alpha Omega Pi at the University of California at Los Angeles. She taught fifth grade at Fremont Elementary School in Anaheim.
She married William J. Burke on June 27, 1929, and moved to Ojai, where she taught English in the Ojai school system. As a resident of Ojai for 72 years, Mrs. Burke was very active in the community, the Ojai Tennis Tournament, PTA, and St. Thomas Altar Society.
She is survived by daughter Sheila Marchese and son-in-law Michael Marchese, D.D.S., of Northridge; son William J. Burke Jr. and daughter-in-law Bonnie Burke of Ojai; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William J. Burke, owner of Ojai Realty Company.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated Monday, July 22, at 11 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Ojai.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to Help of Ojai.
Arrangements are under the direction of Bastian & Perrott Mortuary in Northridge.
