Arnold
Elbert Roy "Buck" Arnold, age 75, died Tuesday, May 16, 2000 at his home in Saltville.
Mr. Arnold was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Shirley Arnold; one son, Benny Arnold of Richmond; four daughters, Pamela Frost and Kim Vincent, both of Richmond, Tracy Weaver of Glade Spring, and Terri Armbrister of Pinelevel, N.C.; his mother, Virgie Arnold; five brothers, Herbert "Chub" Arnold and Danny F. Arnold, both of Saltville, Buddy G. "Bay" Arnold of Chattanooga, Tenn., Harold Arnold of Wilmington, N.C., and David Arnold of Latrobe, Penn.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday, May 18, at 4 p.m. in D.R. Henderson Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Krenik officiating. Burial was in Elizabeth Cemetery with military rites by Saltville VFW Post 7328 Hardy Roberts.

Blankenship
Timothy Dwayne Blankenship, 12 days old, of Wytheville, died Tuesday, May 16, 2000 in Roanoke Community Hospital.
He was preceded in death by his great-grandparents, Cloyd and Della Blankenship, Bill and Audrey Ratliff, and Alva and Lydia Lester.
He is survived by his parents, Jerry Dwayne and Tonia Lynn Lester Blankenship of Wytheville; paternal grandparents, Jerry and Linda Blankenship, Wytheville; maternal grandparents, Jerrylee and Diane Lester of Hurley; great-grandparents, Cecil and Elvie Blankenship of Mohawk, W.Va.; several aunts and uncles, Anthony Michael Blankenship of Wytheville, Randal and Sandra Conaway of Denton, N.C., Victoria Lester of Hurley; one cousin, Ryan Conaway of Denton, N.C.
Funeral services were held Friday, May 19, at 1 p.m. at Grundy Funeral Home with the Rev. Danny Hess and the Rev. Martha Presley officiating. Burial followed in Rob Bailey Cemetery in Hurley.
Grundy Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Cormany
Charles "Chuck" Cormany, age 63, died Wednesday, May 17, 2000 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mr. Cormany worked at the National Aeronautic & Space Administration Communication Center in Cape Kennedy, Fla.
He is survived by his wife, Louise D. Cormany of Marion; one daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Roy Cale of Marion; one son, Kenneth A. Cormany of Aiea, Hawaii; one brother, Cecil Cormany and wife Judy of Georgetown, Texas; one grandson, Micah Cale.
Funeral services will be held today, May 20, at 2 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Neville Mozingo officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery.

Johnson
Belle Combs Johnson, age 87, died Thursday, May 18, 2000 at her home in Sugar Grove.
Mrs. Johnson was the widow of Hurley Johnson.
She is survived by four daughters and three sons-in-law, Irene and Donald Stone, Violet and Donald Young, all of Sugar Grove, Nancy and Randy Cook of Chilhowie, and Ethel Johnson of Galax; two sons and two daughters-in-law, Albert and Dorothy Johnson, and Bobby and Frances Johnson, all of Sugar Grove; one brother-in-law, Vohn Johnson and wife Isabelle of Troutdale; one sister-in-law, Elma Combs of Roseland, Fla.; 16 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, May 21, at 2 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Kenny Price, the Rev. Donald Medley, and the Rev. Don Stone officiating. Burial will follow in Comers Creek Cemetery in Grayson County. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Seaver-Brown Chapel.

Reedy
Ruth W. Reedy, age 49, of Damascus, died Monday, May 15, 2000 at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.
Mrs. Reedy was a lifelong resident of Washington County. She was the daughter of the late Edward Brancen and Maggie Elizabeth Blevins Wyatt. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of V.F.W. Post 9830 and the First Baptist Church in Damascus.
She is survived by her husband, Harley L. Reedy of Damascus; two sons, Edward Lee Reedy and Thomas Abraham Reedy, both of Damascus; two sisters, Mrs. Norman (Dolores) Gentry, of Shady Valley, Tenn., and Linda Sue Rouse of Vinton; one brother, Zane Barr of Mt. Juliet, Tenn.; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, May 16, at 8 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Robert Griffin Jr., officiating. Committal services and interment were held Wednesday, May 17, at 10 a.m. at Sunset Memorial Park in Damascus. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Damascus Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 458, Damascus, VA 24236.

Simms
Margaret Robbins Simms, age 78, widow of Charles C. Simms, died Tuesday, May 16, 2000 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mrs. Simms was retired from Southwestern State Hospital.
She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Ron Atkins of Lynchburg; three sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Linda Simms of Marion, Sidney (Lou) and Judy Simms of Orlando, Fla., and Philip and Donna Simms of St. Cloud, Fla.; five sisters and four brothers-in-law, Juanita and Edward Russell of Baltimore, Md., Virginia Robbins of Martinsville, Jackie and Eddie Richardson of Eden, N.C., Peg and Kyle Jarvis and Wilma and Wade Powers, all of Sugar Grove; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Sam and Mary Jane Robbins, Bill and Louise Robbins, all of Marion, and Carl Robbins of Rural Retreat; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Thursday, May 18, at 11 a.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with Mr. Larry Smith and Mr. Kurt Dibble officiating. Burial followed in Rose Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Gideon Memorial Bible Fund, P.O. Box 1326, Marion, VA 24354.

Woodcox
Carl D. Woodcox, age 80, of Bluefield, W.Va., died Dec. 24, 1999 in Sun City, Ariz.
Mr. Woodcox was born in Concord Township, Ind. He was the son of the late Charles and Ida Woodcox. He was a retired supervisor from Western Electric and was a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge and Moose Lodge.
Mr. Woodcox was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia Hutton Woodcox.
Surviving are his wife, Doris Trivett Woodcox, of Bluefield W.Va., and Sun City, Ariz.; one niece, Roberta Nave, Decatur, Ill.
A memorial service was held Friday, May 19, at 1 p.m. at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Atkins with the Rev. Weldon Sheets officiating.
Seaver-Brown Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Craft
Stella Parsons Craft, age 80, died Saturday, May 20, 2000 at Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie.
Mrs. Craft was a member of St. Clair’s Creek Baptist Church.
She is survived by four sisters, Allene Roop of Bristol, Imogene Gillespie, Nellie Smith and Goldie Carpenter, all of Marion; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday, May 22, at 11 a.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Mike Sage officiating. Burial followed in Rose Lawn Cemetery.
Seaver-Brown Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Pauley
Garnett Crockett Pauley, age 89, of Meadowview, formerly of Bland County, died Saturday, May 20, 2000 at Gregory’s Rest Home in Meadowview.
Mr. Pauley was born in Bland County, the son of the late David Henry Carl and Sheffey M. Collins Pauley. He was a member of the Walkers Creek Methodist Church and was preceded in death by two sisters, Vivian P. Ryburn and Margaret Pauley Hamblin.
He is survived by one sister, Cleo Pauley of Bland and Wytheville; several cousins and friends.
Graveside services were held Monday, May 22, at 1 p.m. at the Bland Cemetery with the Rev. Doug Hyndrich officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Bland Cemetery.

Sheppard
Walter K. Sheppard, age 84, died Saturday, May 20, 2000 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mr. Sheppard was born in Smyth County to the late Sam and Sallie Chapman Sheppard. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a Prisoner of War for over five years and was the recipient of several medals of valor. He was a member of the Francis Marion VFW Post 4667.
Mr. Sheppard was a longtime member of the Calvary Baptist Church and had served as chairman of the deacons. He was also retired from Smyth County Community Hospital with over 30 years of service.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret Sheppard; one son, Roger Lee Sheppard, Marion; one brother, Clyde Sheppard, Salem; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 23, at 8 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Marion Boggs and the Rev. Mike Sage officiating. Interment services will be held today, May 24, at 11 a.m. in Roselawn Cemetery.

Surber
Mary Sue Callihan Surber, age 64, of Glade Spring, died Sunday, May 21, 2000 in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.
Mrs. Surber was born in Saltville, a daughter of the late Frank and America Call Callihan and was a graduate of Emory & Henry College. She taught school in the Washington County School System, retiring in 1978, and was a member of Byars-Cobb Memorial United Methodist Church in Glade Spring.
Surviving are two sons, Tony Lee Surber of Glade Spring, and James Scott Surber of Lynchburg; four granddaughters, Jennifer Surber, Mollie Kate Surber, Annie Grace Surber and Lindsay Surber; two grandsons, Brandon Surber and Jonathan Surber; two daughters-in-law, Gloria Wagner Surber of Glade Spring, and Lisa Kestner Surber of Lynchburg; two special aunts, Helen Callihan of Saltville, and Edna Callihan Pitts of Tempe, Ariz.; a special friend, Bill Stovall of Glade Spring.
A memorial service celebrating her life was conducted Tuesday, May 23, at 7 p.m. in Byars-Cobb Memorial United Methodist Church. By her request her body has been donated to scientific research. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Glade Spring Volunteer Life Saving Crew, P.O. Box 59, Glade Spring, VA 24340, or to the charity of your choice.

Brooks
Jeffrey Allan Brooks, age 33, of Max Meadows, died Wednesday, May 24, 2000, in the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville.
He attended Crockett Tabernacle and was preceded in death by his father, Maynard Brooks.
Survivors include his wife, Rebecca S. Brooks of the home; mother and step-father, Della and Paul Pridemore of Max Meadows; five brothers, Robert Brooks of Schuyler, Va., Tommy Brooks of Max Meadows, David Brooks of Rural Retreat, Ricky Brooks of Max Meadows, and Ronnie Brooks of Wytheville; three sisters, Linda Smith of Wytheville, Joyce Copenhaver of Aberdeen, Md., and Debbie Dalling of Dover, Tenn.; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Jack and Ollie Oliver of Bean Station, Tenn. Four step-brothers, three step-sisters and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be held today (Saturday, May 27, 2000) at 2 p.m. at the Crockett Tabernacle with the Rev. Richard Collins officiating. Interment will follow in the Mountain View Cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.
The family suggests that those who prefer may memorials to the Southwest Virginia Cancer Center in Roanoke.

Henderson
Roy B. "Brack" Henderson, age 71, died Thursday, May 25, 2000, at the Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mr. Henderson was a member of the Plasterco United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy H. Henderson; one son, R.B. Henderson, Jr. of Saltville; one daughter and step-son, Shirley H. Lockhart of Marion and Sammy R. McClure Jr. of Pamplico, S.C.; one sister, Vivian Talley of Saltville; four grandchildren, Kelly Gotham, Bill Gotham, Emily Lockhart, and Megan Lee Henderson; several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services for Mr. Henderson will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 28, 200 at the D. R. Henderson Funeral Home in Saltville with the Rev. Robert Cook officiating. Burial will follow in the Elizabeth Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Saturday, May 27, 2000, at the funeral home.

Simpson
Robert H. Simpson, age 81, died Wednesday, May 24, 2000, in Smyth County Community Hospital.
He was formerly of Fairfax County, Va.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia D. Simpson of Marion; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and James Esper of Woodbridge, Nan and Everett Neese of Marion; one brother, Alvin Simpson of St. Louis, Missouri; two grandchildren, Morgan and Matthew Neese; two sisters-in-law, several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at 2 p.m. at the Kirkwood Presbyterian Church. A reception will be held after the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to the Kirkwood Presbyterian Church, 8336 Carrleigh Parkway, Springfield, Va. 22152.
