BASEHOAR JOHN, 86, Industrial Engineer
John D. Basehoar, 86, of 239 Hershey Drive, Manheim, died Saturday evening, September 15, 2001 at Essa Flory Hospice Center after a long illness.
John was a registered professional engineer from 1963 to 1983. He worked as an industrial engineer for Dentsply International of York for 13 years. Previously, John worked for the Fuller Company in Manheim and York Manufacturing.
John also worked and operated Basehoar Ford in Littlestown for 20 year.
In retirement, John worked part-time as a driver and dispatcher for the Manheim Auto Auction for 17 years.
An active member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Manheim, John served several terms on the church council and taught Sunday school.
John was a member of Elks Club of Gettysburg No. 1045.
John owned his won sailboat and was a life member of Susquehanna Yacht Club, Wrightsville, where he served as commodore, vice commodore and rear commodore.
An antique automobile enthusiast, John co-founded the Gettysburg Region Antique Automobile Club of America.
John was a 1937 industrial engineering graduate of Pennsylvania State University.
Born in Littlestown, John was the son of the late Daniel and Anna Shultz Basehoar.
John was married 60 years to Janet Shelley Basehoar.
In addition to his wife, John is survived by three daughters, Sally A., married to Terry D. Hall of Lititz, Jane L. Dilling companion, Paul J. Wilcox of Elizabethtown and Susan M., married to L. Robert Bellmore of Muncy; a son, Daniel E. married to Wendy L. Basehoar of Lititz; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Florence Shriver of New Smyrna Beach, Florida.

COOLIDGE, FAY C., 70, Lancaster native
Fay C. Coolidge, 70 of 401 Eden Road, Lancaster, died unexpectedly of natural causes Monday morning, September 17, 2001 at the Lancaster General Hospital.
Born in Lancaster Fay was the daughter of the late Russel M. and Margaret Mease Young. She was the wife of John D. Collidge Jr.
Fay was employed at Beverly Manor, Lancaster. She was a volunteer for the Susquehanna Association for the Blind in Lancaster. Fay enjoyed playing bridge, scrabble, drawing and painting.
Surviving in addition to her husband are two sons, John D. Coolidge III and David A. Coolidge both of Lancaster, six grandchildren and one great grandson; two brothers, Russel D. married to Claire Young of Melbourne, Florida, John M. Young of Springfield, Virginia; three sisters, Nancy L. married to Norman Cronquist of Bellevue, Washington, Kathleen S. Singer of Lancaster and Cynthia L. married to Troy Crockett of Landisville.
Fay was preceded in death by one sister the late Mary Hoehn.

INTERMENT: Hernley Mennonite Cemetery, Rapho Township, Pennsylvania. Private Interment will be held at the convenience of the family.

COPE, NORAH M., 81, active in politics
Norah M. Cope, 81, of 902 Hossler Road, Manheim, formerly of McVeytown, Mifflin County, died Saturday, September 29, 2001 at Pleasant View Retirement Community, Manheim, after a brief illness.
Very active in politics, Norah was president of the Lancaster County Republican Women. She also was a committeewoman in Lancaster County from 1947 to 1968 and in Mifflin County from 1968 to 1995.
Norah was a charter member of the National Republican Committee and was president of the Manheim Women’s Club.
Mrs. Cope also was active in the Constitutional Party. In 1974, she was the party’s candidate for governor.
Earlier this year, Norah was recognized by the Pennsylvania state senate for her active involvement to promote political knowledge and activity and to encourage honest government with her activity in Lancaster and Mifflin counties.
Norah had helped her husband run the family business, Lloyd G. Cope Plumbing Company in Manheim.
A member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, Manheim, Norah was involved in her earlier years with the Penn Laurel Council of the Girl Scouts.
Born in Jeanette, Norah was the daughter of the ate Benjamin F. and Sarah Hall Eckenroad.
Her husband, Lloyd G. Cope, died in 1989.
Survivors include four sons, L. Eugene, married to Joanne L. Zuch Cope of Lancaster, Benjamin W., married to Evelyn Essex Cope of Lititz, C. David, married to Mary Stewart Cope of Willow Street, and Douglas R., of Manheim; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Norah was preceded in death by a daughter, Frances C. Dohner, and three sisters and two brothers.

ERLINE, RUTH K., 86, of United Zion Home
Ruth K. Erline, 86, of 1923 Lititz Pike, formerly of Lititz, died Monday, October 1, 2001 at United Zion Retirement Community in Lititz after a brief illness.
Ruth was a 71-year member of Lititz Moravian Congregation, where she was a deener for 25 years and belonged to the Women’s Fellowship.
Ruth was a 1933 graduate of Lititz High School.
She was a past member of Lady Sutter Rebekah Lodge 435 in Lititz.
Ruth enjoyed knitting and crocheting.
Born in Lititz, Ruth was a daughter of the late George P. and M. Ada Stump Keehn.
Ruth was married 19 years on September 25th to Dexter W. Erline. Her first husband, Robert Frederick died in 1955.
Surviving in addition to her husband are two daughters, Sylvia Frederick of Lancaster and R. Roberta, married to Dale Diehm of Elm; a stepdaughter, Edith, married to Robert Bedford of Lancaster; a grandson; a step-grandson; and three great-grandchildren.
Ruth was preceded in death by a daughter, Roxanne Frederick; a grandson; and two brothers, George Keehn and John Keehn.

FORSTER, MARY E., Weis Market Retiree
Mary E. Forster, 89, formerly of 633 Hamilton Street, died Saturday, October 6, 2001 after a long illness at St. Anne’s Home, Columbia, where she had lived the past year.
Mary worked in the deli department of Weis Markets in Golden Triangle for 15 years, retiring in 1997.
Mary also worked for various standholders at Central Market and the former Southern Market.
Mrs. Forster was a member of St. Anne’s Catholic Church.
Mary enjoyed sewing and crocheting.
Born in Lancaster, Mary was the daughter of the late Theodore and Kathryn Hecker Wolf.
Her husband, Ludwig Forster, died in 1981.
Surviving are a son, James T., married to Pamela R. Herr Forster of Marietta; a daughter, Rita A., married to David W. Snavely of Lititz; two grandsons; Adam Ludwig Forster and Andrew David Forster; two brothers, Robert, married to Ellen Wolf, and Richard, married to Betsy Wolf, both of Lancaster; and a sister, Anna Antoniades of Ellicott City, Maryland.
Mary was preceded in death by four brothers, Herbert, William, Joseph and George Wolf.

GEIB, JACOB S., RAPHO TWP. FARMER
Jacob S. Geib, age 90, of 424 Prospect Road, Manheim, PA died Friday evening, September 7, 2001 at Mount Hope Church Home, Manheim, PA following a brief illness.
He was the husband of Grace G. Galbreath Geib and the couple observed 59 years of marriage this past January. Born in Manheim, Jacob was the son of the late Abraham K. and Lizzie Strickler Geib.
Mr. Geib was a lifelong Rapho Township farmer and was a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, Penryn, PA. He was an avid checker player.
Surviving beside his wife are three sons, Irvin G. Geib and Melvin G. married to Brenda J. Burgard Geib, both of Manheim and Mahlon G. married to Faye E. Brubaker Geib of St. Charles, MN; four daughters, Esther G. married to Wilmer L. Shertzer of Columbia, Edna G. married to Raymond M. Rohrer of Lititz, Mae G. married to Robert E. Risser of Elizabethtown, and Ida G. Lantz of Manheim; thirteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren; two brothers, Paul S. married to Ruth Geib of Mount Joy and Homer S. married to Ruth Geib of Manheim.
Jacob was preceded in death by five brothers, Elam S., Norman S., Samuel S., Abraham S., and Elmer S.; and three sisters, Edna S. Geib, Mabel S. Ruhl, and Edith S. Todd.

GREINER, WALTER B., 92, PenDOT worker
Walter B. Greiner, 92, of Mount Hope Church Home, Manheim, died of natural causes Saturday, September 29, 2001 at the home.
Walter lived in the Manheim area for many years and at Mount Hope Church Home for a year.
Walter worked ten years for the Lancaster division of Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, where he was a road crew maintenance worker. He retired in 1974.
Walter also was a caretaker of Colebrook Trinity Lutheran Cemetery for a number of years.
A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, Walter served in the Forest Headquarters Division and was a member of Mount Joy American Legion, Walter S. Ebersole Post 185.
Walter was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church of Colebrook, Pennsylvania State Fox Hunter’s Association and Milton Grove Sportsman Club.
Born in Mount Joy Township, Walter was the son of the late Aaron and Mary Boyd Greiner.
Surviving are two brothers, Franklin B., married to Edith E. Greiner of Mount Joy, and Earl B. of Manheim; and a sister, Nora Youtz of Elizabethtown.
Walter was preceded in death by four brothers, George, Harvey, Arthur and Harding; and a sister, Marge Hoffer.

HALDEMAN, RUTH, W., 85, active in Church
Ruth W. Haldeman, 85, of 1419 Gish Road, Manheim, died Thursday afternoon, September 13, 2001 at Mount Hope Church Home, Manheim, after a long illness.
Ruth helped her husband operate the family farm in Penn Township for many years, and also worked as a cook for Manheim Auto Auction. In her early years, Ruth was a houseparent, along with her husband, for the former Hershey Industrial Schools, now the Hershey School.
A member of Chiques Church of the Brethren, Mrs. Haldeman was the head deacon’s wife of the church. Ruth also was active with the church’s Ladies Aid Society, Brethren Disaster Relief, sewing with the church hospital auxiliary for Lancaster hospitals and helping with the children’s Sunday school.
Ruth made quilts for all 23 of her grandchildren and enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening.
Born in Rapho Township, Ruth was the daughter of the late Walter and Daisy White Hosler.
Ruth was married to Daniel G. Haldeman for 64 years on March 20.
Surviving besides her husband are two sons, Barry L., married to Colleen Neher Haldeman, and James H., married to Donna M. Gochenour Haldeman, both of Manheim; four daughters, Linda H., married to John Kopp of Sunbury, Mary A., married to Robert M. Wolgemuth of Manheim, Bonita L., married to Ervin Stutzman of Harrisonburg, Va., and Sylvia J., married to William Gearhart of Halifax; 23 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are four brothers, Stanley, married to Elsie Hosler of Mount Joy, Mark Hosler of Lititz, and Galen, married to Alta Hosler, and Marlin, married to Mae Hosler, both of Manheim; and four sisters, Naomi Hollinger of Lebanon, and Orpha Foreman, Esther, married to Wilbur G. Lehman, and Grace Myer, all of Manheim.
Ruth was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Hosler, and a sister, Amelia Buckwalter.

HOFFER, MABEL, 82, helped on family farm
Mabel S. Hoffer, 82, of Brethren Village, 3001 Lititz Pike, formerly of 1940 Sunnyside Road, Manheim, died of natural causes Tuesday morning, September 25, 2001 at Brethren Village.
Mabel had lived at Brethren Village since 1992.
Mrs. Hoffer helped her husband operate the family farm in Rapho Township.
Mabel was a member of Chiques Church of the Brethren, Manheim, where she taught Sunday school. Mabel also was a member of Mastersonville Fire Company ladies auxiliary.
Mabel was a 1939 graduate of the former Mount Joy High School.
Mabel enjoyed traveling, reading, flower and vegetable gardening and serving people.
Her husband, Emanuel S. Hoffer Sr., died in 1992.
Born in Rapho Township, Mabel was the daughter of the late Jacob Y. and Margie Frey Stauffer.
Surviving are four sons, Kervin S., married to Ruth A. Kreider Hoffer of Bainbridge, Clarence S. “Chuck” married to Sondra Ratzloff Hoffer of Manheim, Emanuel S. Jr., married to Tena P. Waters Hoffer of Mount Joy, and Gary S., married to Barbara Hertzler Hoffer of Lititz; two daughters, Eleanor S., married to William C. Haldeman of Hershey, and Shirley S., married to Glenn S. Weaver of Ephrata; 22 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Eva, married to Harry Stauffer, and Orlena, married to John Brubaker, both of Lititz.
Mabel was preceded in death by two brothers, Orville and Elwood Stauffer, and two sisters, Almeda Garber and Marie Stauffer.

JOHNSTONE, RICHARD O., US Navy, Retired
Richard O. Johnstone, age 71, of 598 West Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, PA died Saturday evening, October 6, 2001 at Lebanon Veterans Administration Medical Center, Lebanon, PA following a lengthy illness.
Richard was the husband of Mary Ann Diffenderfer Kreider Johnstone. The couple observed 16 years of marriage this past March. Born in Oak Park, IL he was the son of the late Alan Robert and Gladys Maude Snyder Johnstone.
A US Navy career man he he enlisted in 1948. After attending boot camp and photo school, he served as an aviation photographer’s mate in Pensacola, FL for six months. He then was assigned to ZP3, a blimp squadron in Lakehurst, NJ where he worked as a general photographer for two years. He next worked in lens reconditioning and motion picture processing while stationed in Philadelphia.
From there he served aboard the USS Forrestal for 10 months as 1st class photographer’s mate and the USS Atka, an icebreaker, resupplying dew lines in northern Alaska and Canada.
While stationed in Yorktown, VA he attended the school of mine warfare and worked as a photographer in training aids for two years. In August 1959, Richard was accepted into the Naval Enlisted Scientific Education Program (NESEP) and began attending Penn State University, from which he received a B.S. Degree in Physics in January of 1963. After graduation from both Penn State and Officer’s Candidate School (OCS), he taught reactor principles and physics at nuclear power school in Bainbridge, MD for 4 years.
He then served aboard the USS Mazama as operations officer, with a 10-month tour of duty in Vietnam. He next worked in Washington, DC at the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency and finished his naval career at the Damage Control Training Center in Philadelphia.
He retired from the US Navy as Lieutenant Commander (LCDR) in June of 1973.
After his naval career he was employed as a realtor associate at Penn Realty in Manheim for 2 years.
In May 1975, Richard joined Fulton Bank, Lancaster as a Trust Real-Estate Officer in the Trust Department, where he assumed responsibility for the sale and disbursement of personal property and real estate for individuals and estates. He retired as Senior Trust Real Estate Officer in May of 2000.
Richard was a former member of St. James Episcopal Church , Lancaster and attended East Fairview Church of the Brethren, Manheim. He was a member of the Lancaster County Board of Realtors, the Penn State Alumni Association, and the Retired Officer Association. He was a member and past president of the Red Rose Barbershop Chorus and a member of the United States Amateur Ballroom Dancing Association (USABDA).
His hobbies included travelling, gardening, ballroom dancing, and collecting American Art Pottery. He was an avid fan of both Penn State football and Manheim Central Barons football teams.
Surviving beside his wife are two sisters, Anne married to Jack Stumpf of Scottsdale, AZ and Mary Frances married to Joseph Vaccaro of Colorado Springs, CO.
Richard was preceded in death by his first wife, Nancy Hess Johnstone who died in January 1983.
