Norma Engberg Requa
Norma Engberg Requa of Phelps died Sunday, July 4, 2004, at Lillian E. Kerr Nursing Care and Rehabilitation Center in Phelps. She was 83.
Mrs. Requa was born Sept. 18, 1920, in Marinette.
A former resident of Rockford, Ill., she had lived in Phelps since 1970.
She married Haven “Charlie” Requa Jan. 1, 1981.
Her hobbies included gardening and fishing. She served as president of Eleanor Ellis Public Library, was treasurer of the Phelps Woman's Club and served on the Vilas County Board of Adjustment for many years.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Bill Engberg; and one sister, Marge Wicklund.
In addition to her second husband, survivors include two daughters, Sue Engberg of Green Bay and Tuckey Requa of Montgomery Village, Md.; three sons, Dale (Jan) of Rockford, Ill., Patrick Requa of Antioch, Ill., and Charles Requa of Lake Forest, Ill.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Memorials may be made to Eleanor Ellis Library in Phelps or Northwoods Wildlife Center in Minocqua.

Remie Sambs
Remie Sambs of Eagle River died Wednesday, July 7, 2004, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield. She was 65.
Mrs. Sambs was born April 18, 1939, in Gubat, Sorsogon in the Phillippines.
A resident of Eagle River since 1981, she was an avid bowler and enjoyed arts, crafts and gardening.
Mrs. Sambs was a member of St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church, Women of St. Peters and the Red Hat Society. She volunteered at St. Peter's Thrift Shop.
She is survived by her husband of 37 years, Robert; two daughters, Maria (Dave) Botelho of Savannah, Ga., and Megan Sambs of Minneapolis, Minn.; one son, Leonard of Waukesha; three grandchildren; one brother; and three sisters.
A funeral service was held July 12 at St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church in Eagle River. The Rev. Robert Koszarek officiated.
Burial was in St. Peter's Cemetery in Eagle River.
A memorial will be established in her name.

Georgette M. Smith
Georgette M. Smith of Eagle River died Wednesday, July 7, 2004, at her home. She was 86.
She was born June 4, 1918, in Belgium.
A former resident of Cary, Ill., she had lived in Eagle River for the past 25 years.
She was a professional dancer in her early years. She was a seamstress, and her hobbies included making crafts and afghans.
Mrs. Smith was a member of Community Bible Church in Eagle River, the Homemakers Club and was active at Kalmar Senior Center.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Douglas, in 1995 and a daughter, Annette Shideler Jan. 16, 2001.
Survivors include three daughters, Judy (Gary) Lechner of Florida, Susan (Alan) Smith and Jeanine Maguire of Janesville; 13 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held July 12 at Gaffney-Busha Funeral Home with the Rev. David Johnson officiating.
Burial was in St. Germain Cemetery in St. Germain.

Bernard 'Bernie' Stern Sr.
Bernard “Bernie” Stern Sr. of Appleton, formerly of Rhinelander and Sayner, died Saturday, July 10, 2004, at St. Elizabeth Hospital. He was 84.
Mr. Stern was born April 2, 1920, in Shawano, the son of William and Barbara (nee Blick) Stern Sr. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the South Pacific Theater.
On June 27, 1944, he married Marie Tameling in Sayner. They were married 60 years. They owned and operated a grocery store in New London for several years before moving to Rhinelander in 1951. They also owned and operated Rhinelander Decorating and retired in 1980 when they moved to Sayner.
They moved to Appleton in 1997, and were members of St. Mary Catholic Church in Greenville.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Louis and Jim.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by four sons, Bernard Jr. (Mary) of Appleton, John (Ginger) of Kimberly, and Kenneth and Joseph, both of Menasha; one daughter, Theresa Stern of Appleton; four grandchildren; two brothers, William (Marie) of New London, and David (Betty) of Wisconsin Rapids; and two sisters-in-law, Carol Stern and Rose Stern.
Visitation will be at Wichmann Tri-County Chapel in Menasha Friday, July 16, from 5 to 8 p.m. and Saturday at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the Mass. A parish prayer and scripture service will take place at 7 p.m. at Wichmann Tri-County Chapel, with Deacon Dave De Young officiating.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, July 17, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church in Greenville, with the Rev. John Zickert officiating.
Interment will be at a later date in Plum Lake Cemetery in Sayner.
A memorial fund will be established in his name.

Thomas Victor Howard Vugrinec
Thomas Victor Howard Vugrinec of Marenisco, Mich., died Thursday, July 8, 2004, as the result of an automobile accident. He was 18.
He was born Nov. 8, 1985, in Rock Springs, Wyo., and moved to Marenisco in 1986. He was a 2003 graduate of Marenisco High School.
Mr. Vugrinec graduated from Gogebic Community College this past spring with a certificate of completion in construction technology. He was employed at Frontier Builders of Land O' Lakes.
He was an avid hunter and his hobbies included music.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Thomas Vugrinec.
Survivors include his parents, Ronald and Dani Charles of Marenisco and Thomas, formerly of Land O' Lakes, and Sandy Vugrinec of Wyoming; three sisters, Cassandra (Eric) Nations and Michelle Vugrinec of Wyoming and DeAnna Charles of Marenisco; maternal grandparents, Howard and Bonnie Caron; and paternal grandparents, Henrietta Vugrinec and Bud and Gail Charles.
He is further survived by two nephews and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
A funeral service was held July 12 in the Marenisco High School gymnasium. The Rev. Corey Litzner officiated.
Interment was in Marenisco Cemetery.

Frederick F. Wranik
Frederick F. Wranik of St. Germain died Friday, July 9, 2004, at Howard Young Medical Center in Woodruff. He was 81.
Mr. Wranik was born May 29, 1923, in Cudahy, the son of Josef and Josephine (nee Plevak) Wranik. He was raised in Cudahy and graduated from Cudahy High School. He attended UW-Milwaukee.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater.
At Camp McCoy in Sparta, he married Pauline “Polly” Filtz and they lived in Milwaukee, Cudahy and Rothschild before moving to St. Germain in 1970.
He owned and operated Fred Wranik and Sons Plumbing and Heating for more than 25 years. He and his wife also owned and operated Wranik's Pine Terrace Resort in St. Germain.
His hobbies included hunting and fishing. He was active in numerous community organizations including the American Legion, the DAV and a lifetime member of the VFW. He was also a member of St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church.
He was preceded in death by one granddaughter; three brothers; and two sisters.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Sherry (Glenn) Schultz of Trinity, Fla.; one son, Thomas (Elizabeth Exline) of Eagle River; and five grandchildren.
He is further survived by nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held July 13 at St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church in Eagle River, with the Rev. Robert Koszarek officiating.
Burial was in St. Peter Cemetery in Eagle River.

Edwin 'Ned' Achuff
Edwin “Ned” Achuff of Land O' Lakes, formerly of Milwaukee, died Wednesday, July 14, 2004, at Lillian E. Kerr Nursing Care and Rehabilitation Center in Phelps. He was 93.
Mr. Achuff was born April 21, 1911, in Minneapolis, Minn.
He married LaVera “Vee” Ruggles Aug. 12, 1939, in Milwaukee. He was employed in the boat and motor business for 40 years and his hobbies included repairing and refinishing boats and motors, fly-fishing and duck hunting.
A summer resident of Land O' Lakes since 1950, he moved there permanently in January 2004.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years; one son, Jim (Diane) of Land O' Lakes; one brother, James of Florida; and two grandchildren.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
Inurnment was in Alpha Crematory.

Horace K. 'Jeff' Clingman
Horace K. “Jeff” Clingman of Temple, Okla., died Wednesday, July 14, 2004, at Temple Manor Nursing Home. He was 88.
Mr. Clingman was born Dec. 28, 1915, in Walters, Okla., to Ed and Dora Clingman. He married Annie Bernice Tucker Oct. 16, 1936.
He and his twin, Morris, were given the nicknames of “Mutt” and “Jeff” by older siblings and the names continued through adulthood.
Employed by Big Chief Drilling Co. for many years, he worked as a roughneck and driller in the oil fields of Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana. After leaving the oil-drilling business, he operated a service station in Temple, Okla., until his retirement.
His hobbies included fishing and he was an avid rose gardener.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters; and eight brothers.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Marge (Jerry) Baerenwald of Eagle River; a son, Terry (Vikki) of Edmond, Okla.; two brothers, Henry of Midland, Texas, and Roy of Temple, Okla.; a sister, Theta Boren of Temple, Okla.; two grandsons; a great-granddaughter; and a great-great-granddaughter.
A graveside service was held at Temple Cemetery.

William H. 'Bill' Grenell
William H. “Bill” Grenell of Eagle River died Thursday, July 15, 2004, at Seasons of Life Hospice House in Woodruff. He was 67.
Mr. Grenell was born Nov. 1, 1936, in Chicago, Ill., the son of Howard and Ruth (nee Nash) Grenell.
Formerly a resident of Des Plaines, Ill., he moved to Eagle River when he retired 12 years ago.
He was an avid fisherman and Green Bay Packers fan. He helped introduce the Fishing Has No Boundaries program to Eagle River and was a member of Muskies Inc.
Survivors include four daughters, Jennifer (William) McArthur of Ingleside, Ill., Christine (Michael) Polanzi of McHenry, Ill., Jill (Rich) Becmer of Lake Villa, Ill., and Ruth Michelle of Anaheim, Calif.; one son, Robert of Hainesville, Ill.; two brothers, Richard (Joanne) of Libertyville, Ill., and Robert (Sherry) of Spring Grove, Ill.; one sister, Peggy (Dan) Pawlak of Lake Villa, Ill.; and six grandchildren.
He is further survived by nieces, nephews and friends.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Inurnment took place and burial was in St. Bede Catholic Cemetery in Fox Lake, Ill.
Memorials may be sent to Seasons of Life Hospice House in Woodruff.

Rev. John P. Stremski
The Rev. John P. Stremski of Shawano died Tuesday, July 13, 2004, at his home. He was 70.
The Rev. Stremski was born April 13, 1934, in Bessemer Township, the son of the late John and Felicia (nee Wolowinski) Stremski.
Graduating from Lincoln High School in Hurley, he then attended St. Thomas College in St. Paul, Minn., and St. John College and Seminary in Collegeville, Minn., and was ordained as a priest June 11, 1960. He also earned a master's degree in English from UW-Superior.
The first 19 years of his priesthood he taught religion, English and music at Cathedral High School and Cathedral Junior High School in Superior. He served for 14 years on the Diocesan Liturgical Commission to implement changes prompted by the Second Vatican Council and in several parishes as assistant pastor, chaplain and parochial administrator.
His hobbies included playing piano, all types of music, Broadway theater and musicals.
In 1979, he began working in St. Anthony Parish in Lac du Flambeau and continued until his retirement 20 years later, receiving honors from his Ojibwa parishioners.
He is survived by four sisters, Dorothy (Floyd) Norberg of Sterling, Ill., Gloria Fillion of Beloit, Phyllis (Daniel) Slade of St. Germain and Carol ( Martin) Sybeldon of Tilleda.
He is further survived by an aunt, 15 nieces and nephews, cousins and other relatives.
A funeral service was held July 19 at St. Mary's Church in Hurley, with Bishop Raphael Fliss officiating.
Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery in Hurley.

Stuart 'Stu' Belliveau
Stuart “Stu” Belliveau of Eagle River died Monday, Aug. 23, 2004, at Howard Young Medical Center in Woodruff. He was 84.
Mr. Belliveau was born July 15, 1920, in Chicopee, Mass., the son of Charles and Florence Belliveau.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and married Joan (nee Perkins) Nov. 23, 1950, at St. Patrick's Church in Woodruff.
A resident of Eagle River, he had previously lived in St. Germain and Huntington Beach, Calif.
He worked for the Commission on Aging in Vilas County for many years. His hobbies included playing hockey and telling jokes and he was known as an artist.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Timothy.
Survivors include his wife; five daughters, Kim of Prescott Valley, Ariz., Debbie of Woodruff, Karen (Gary) Pockat of St. Germain, Therese (Mark) Ziemann of Appleton and Michelle of Neenah; two sons, Charles “Chuck” of Eagle River and Keith of St. Germain; one sister, Marcella Petersen of Florida and Connecticut; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He is further survived by a niece, nephew, other relatives and friends.
A funeral service was held Aug. 26 at St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church in Eagle River, with the Rev. Robert Koszarek officiating.
Inurnment was in Alpha Crematory.

LaVerne F. Church
LaVerne F. Church of Shawano died Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2004, at Evergreen Nursing Home in Shawano. She was 80.
Mrs. Church was born Feb. 16, 1924, in Eagle River, the daughter of Forrest and Lily (nee Eliason) Shewmake.
She served in the U.S. Air Corps during World War II and was stationed in Bermuda. She was a member of D.A.V. Chapter 22 of Shawano.
She married Dewey Church Sept. 7, 1972, in Racine County. He preceded her in death Jan. 25, 1992.
Mrs. Church had been a cook for several years at children's camps and was well known for her baking.
Her hobbies included playing bingo, cards and shopping.
Survivors include her daughter, Mary (Will) Sworab of Bellevue, Neb.; one sister, Margaret Small of Eagle River; two brothers, Orville (Sandy) Shewmake of Jasper, Mich., and Ralph Shewmake of Eagle River; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held Aug. 28 at Swedberg Funeral Home in Shawano, with the Rev. Charles Daily officiating. D.A.V. Post 22 of Shawano will made the presentation of the flag.
