Mary Phalen Logue, 81, of Bancroft, formerly of Nitro, died August 19, 1999, in Putnam General Hospital after a long illness.
She was a native of Buena Vista, Virginia, and had attended Nitro High School. She was a retired Poca High School cook and a member of Bancroft Church of God Mission.
Surviving: daughters, Kay Workman of Red House and Nancy McGraw of Winfield; sons, Edward Phalen of Bloomfield, Ohio, Glenn Phalen of Hurricane, and Charles Phalen of Bancroft; stepdaughter, Ethel Wilkinson of Hometown; stepsons, Steve Logue of Derby, Kansas and David Logue of Parkersburg; sisters, Louise Hendel Long of Minerva, Ohio, Dorothy Hendel Syme of Alliance, Ohio, and Virginia Hendel Davis of Nitro; 23 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.
Service was held August 21, 1999 at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with the Rev. Carl Arthur officiating. Burial was in Schowen Cemetery, Bancroft.

Lee Edwward Lewis
Lee Edward Lewis, 56, of Buffalo died January 20, 1999, in St. Mary’s Hospital, Huntington, after a long illness.
He was a former employee of Gillispie Tree Service.
Surviving: daughter, Jeanie Lewis of Liberty; sons, Denny of Columbus, Ohio, Eddie of Liberty and Joshua of Buffalo; sisters, Ruby Bryant of Buffalo, Jewell Fowler of Byesville, Ohio, Linda Spurlock of Charleston, and Brenda Withrow of Poca; brothers, Thomas, Bobbvie and Mickey, all of Buffalo.
Service was held at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with the Rev. Jerry Harrison officiating. Burial was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House. The family suggests memorial donations be made to Kanawha Hospice Care, 1143 Dunbar Avenue, Dunbar WV 25064.

Audra O. Melton
Audra Opal Burford Melton, 90, of Lanham died November 28, 1999, at home after a long illness.
She was a former custodian at Lanham Elementary School and was a Methodist.
Surviving daughters, Rosalie Purdy of Poca, Betty Melton and Drema Scott, both of Circleville, Ohio, Sharon Mullins of Charleston, and Peggy Melton of Hometown; son, James F. of Buffalo; sister, Violet B. Lanham; caregiver, Nancy Kelly; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.
Service was held December 2, 1999 at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with the Rev. Jarrold Lanham officiating. Burial was in Melton Cemetery, Lanham.

Betty Jane McCallister
Betty Jane McCallister, 71, of Hurricane died November 30, 1999, in Sunrise Nursing Home after a long illness.
She attended First Church of the Nazarene, Hurricane, and was a retired private-duty nurse.
Surviving: daughter, Sharon Duke of Hurricane; sons, Frank C. and Charles R. McCallister, both of Hurricane; sisters, Mary Holley of Dublin, Ohio, Deloris Longshore of Midway, Ohio, and Wanda Burdette of Hurricane; brothers, Jesse Higginbotham Jr. of Coshocton, Ohio and Ray Qualls of Columbus, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.
Service was held December 4, 1999 at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. James Baker officiating. Burial was in Culloden Cemetery.

Ernest A. McGrew
Ernest A. McGrew, 97, of Winfield died December 5, 1999, in Sunbridge Nursing Home, Hurricane, after a long illness.
He was a retired carpenter and furniture maker, a native of Buffalo, a member of the Carpenters Union and attended Teays Valley Missionary Baptist Church. He worked for the Army during World War II, constructing barracks in Virginia and Maryland, and built United Nations homes in New Jersey in the 1950's.
Surviving: daughters, Patricia Ann Miller of St. Albans and Thea Saba of Phoenix; brothers, Wilbert Richard of Winfield and Fred of Nitro; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.
Service was held December 8, 1999 at Cooke Funeral Home, Nitro, with the Rev. Bruce Young officiating. Burial was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.

William G. Morris
William G. Morris, 65, of Sanford, Florida died November 7, 1999, in Central Florida Regional Hospital after a long illness.
He was a former employee of Wackenhut Corp. and a Navy veteran with 20 years' service, having served in the Vietnam War.
Surviving: wife, Sharon Turner Morris; daughters, Jill Mabe of Middletown, Ohio and Susan Kay Morris of Oacal; sisters, Janice Morris, Marie Browning and Delia Mott, all of Huntington; brother, Charles Morris of Huntington; two grandsons.
Service was held November 11, 1999 in Valley View Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel, Hurricane, with the Rev. Freddie W. Elliott officiating and with military rites by American Legion Post 93, Ceredo. Entombment was in the mausoleum. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Perry Lee Morris
Mrs. Perry Lee Morris, 84, of Regency Place, Scott Depot, WV, formerly of Chattanooga, TN, passed away Thursday, October 28, 1999, at St. Mary’s Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Monday at the Chattanooga (TN) Funeral Home North, by the Rev. Dale Gilbert, Pastor of the Wesley Memorial Methodist Church. Burial in the Hamilton Memorial Gardens, Chattanooga. She was born October 2,1915, in Mulga, Alabama, daughter of the late John Jacob and Priscilla Jane Kelly. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Franklin Morris, a brother, Crawford Kelly, and a sister, Aline Shaver Collins. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Jeanne Morris of Culloden, WV, and Bill and Elma Morris of Patterson, NY; five grandchildren, Tony, Bill, Chris, Scott and Laura Morris; five greatgrandchildren, Brittany, John, Bill, Sara Jean and Chelsea; a sister, Juanita Harrison of San Angelo, TX; and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were grandsons and Houston Shaver and Todd Worlen. Contributions may be made to the Milton (WV) Presbyterian Church. Reger Funeral Home, Huntington, WV, was in charge of local arrangements.

Eva Mae Cline Montague
Eva Mae Cline Montague, 82, of Hurricane died Oct. 20, 1999, in Teays Valley Nursing Center, Hurricane, after a long illness. She was a homemaker, a native of Logan County and a Baptist. Surviving: daughters, Evelyn Newman of Hurricane, Nannette Sowards of Southside; sons, Paul “PJ.” Cline of Statesville, Kenneth Cline of Winfield, Randy Cline of Hurricane; stepdaughters, Wanda Cline of Boonesville, N.C., Carol Toney of Hurricane; stepson, Johnny Montague of Hurricane; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren. Service were held Saturday, October 23, 1999 at Cooke Funeral Home, Nitro, with the Rev. Nyle Fisher officiating. Burial in Grandview Cemetery, Red House.

Mrs. Genevieve E. “Jenny” Morrison
Mrs. Genevieve E. “Jenny” Morrison, 74, of Barboursville passed away Thursday, September 23,1999 at her residence. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, September 26,1999 at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, by Rev. Brian Wray with violinist Patricia Green. Mrs. Morrison’s daughter, Judith Walker will present a special tribute. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton She was born June 18, 1925 in Lincoln County, a daughter of the late Franklin and Alwilda Madora Alford Mc Callister. Genevieve was a sixty-year member of the Hurricane Church of the Nazarene. Prior to her retirement she was a dispatcher for the Hurricane Police Department. But, her greatest life’s work was, through her example, instilling the characteristics of love, servanthood, forgiveness, honesty, sincerity and an appreciation for all the minute details of God’s goodness into her daughters and her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Harold Webb; one grandchild, Christopher Walker; her sisters, Hallie McCallister, Garland McCallister and Arbutus Quentrill. She is survived by her husband, Henry “Drew” Morrison; two daughters and a son-in-law, Judith Walker of Mullens, WV, and Jacqueline and James McCoy of Huntington; grandchildren, Andrew Walker and Whitney Genevieve Walker of Mullens, Zachary Lucas and Yuri McCoy, both of Huntington, and Hillary McCoy of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; two sisters, Myrtle Faye Smith and Xenil Marker, both of Hurricane; two brothers, Orel McCallister, of Hurricane, and Hillard McCallister of Scott Department. She was blessed and is survived by a host of life-long best friends. Pallbearers were officers from the Hurricane Police Department .-
Lillian Crum Murphy
Lillian Grace Crum Murphy, 62, of St. Albans, formerly of San Diego, died Sept. 13, 1999, in Thomas Memorial Hospital, South Charleston.
She was a native of Freeze Fork, a homemaker and a caregiver.
Surviving: daughter, Debra K. Murphy Jacobs of Newark, Ohio; son, William T. Murphy of Durham, N.C.; sister, Stella McCoy of St. Albans; brothers, Zeb Crum of Carson City, Nev., Sidney Crum of Rossmore, Dewey Crum of Henlawson, Bernard Crum of National City, Calif.; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.
Memorial service Saturday, Sept. 18, 1999, at Evans Funeral Home, Chapmanville. The body was cremated.

Donald T. Melton
Donald T. Melton, 67, of Poca died August 5, 1999, at home after a short illness.
He was a lifelong resident of Poca. He received a degree in mechanical engineering from West Virginia University and was a retired project manager for Union Boiler with 30 years’ service and a former plant engineer for American Viscose, Nitro. He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War and a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Nitro.
Surviving: wife, Helen Gatens Melton; daughters, Denise Jardini of Pittsburgh, Karen Richardson of Greenville, North Carolina, Lisa Hutchinson of Chesapeake, Virginia, and Donna Reed of Poca; son, Paul of South Charleston; brothers, Jack of Poca and James W. of Raleigh, North Carolina; 12 grandchildren.
Service was hed August 7, 1999 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Nitro, with the Rev. Dean Borgmeyer officiating. Burial was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes. Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements.

Kenneth F. Miller
Kenneth F. Miller, 85, of Hurricane died August 4, 1999, in Putnam General Hospital.
He was retired from the Bricklayers and Allied Crafts Union. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, St. Albans, and an Army veteran of World War II.
Surviving: wife, Irma N.; daughter, Sue Miller Robinette of Wilson, North Carolina; son, John W. of Orlando, Florida; stepdaughters, Diane Lynn of Columbus, Ohio and Carla Moore of Milton; sister, Betty Leonard of Ishpeming, Michigan; three grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; one great-granddaughter.
Service was held August 7, 1999 at Grace Lutheran Church with Pastor Clifford Smith and the Rev. Michael Derry officiating. Burial was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to Grace Lutheran Church, 812 S. Carroll Street, St. Albans WV 25177 or the American Heart Association, 4510 Pennsylvania Avenue, Charleston WV 25302.

Countess Morrison
Mrs. Countess Morrison, 93, of Culloden, WV, formerly of Logan, passed away Sunday, July 18, 1999 in Morris Memorial Convalescent and Nursing Home, Milton, W.Va., after a long illness. A graveside funeral service was.conducted Wednesday, July 21 at the Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Pecks Mill, W.Va., with Rev. Rex Thompson officiating. Countess was born Dec. 16, 1905 in Logan County. She was a. daughter of the late Lark and Lillian Berry White. Countess was also preceded in death by her husband, James Dallas Morrison. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Logan. Countess is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Calvin McNab of Culloden; one grandson, Dallas McNab and his wife, Heather of Teays Valley; nieces and nephews. The family suggests memorials to the First Baptist Church of Logan in lieu of flowers.

Audrey L. Meadows
Audrey Louise Lilly Meadows, 85, of Fraziers Bottom died July 23, 1999, in Pleasant Valley Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Pt. Pleasant.
She was a retired teacher from Mason County schools with 30 years’ service. She was a graduate of Hannan High School and Marshall University, a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, Fraziers Bottom, where she was active in the Women’s Missionary Society and was a Sunday school teacher and church clerk.
She was a member of Mason County Farm Women’s Club, Mason County Education Association, Mason County Classroom Teachers Association, Mason County Retired Teachers Association, West Virginia Education Association and National Education Association. She was a charter member of Sigma Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa.
Surviving: daughters, Elizabeth Lloyd of Fraziers Bottom and Lauretta Jackson of Pt. Pleasant; son, Milton Meadows of Utica, Ohio; sisters, Bernice Wallace of Portsmouth, Ohio, Clara Staats of Ripley, Evelyn Green of Atlanta, Lucille Sarrett of Gallipolis, Ohio, and Helen Mitchell of Longmont, Ohio; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.
Service was held July 26, 1999 at Mount Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Marc Sarrett officiating. Burial was in Mount Zion Baptist Church Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer’s Disease Association, Southern West Virginia Chapter, 400 Allen Drive, Suite 20, Charleston WV 25302.

John E. McCoy Sr.
John E. McCoy Sr., 75, of Liberty died July 19, 1999, in Putnam General Hospital after a long illness.
He was retired from Monsanto Chemical Co. with 34 years’ service and was a retired minister.
Surviving: wife, Winifred Osborne McCoy; sons, Gary Edward McCoy of Liberty and John E. McCoy Jr. of Poca; sister, Ruth Elliott of Independence, Missouri and Genevieve Counts of Hineston, Louisiana; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.
Service was held July 22, 1999 at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with Paul Arthur officiating. The body was donated to the Human Gift Registry at WVU. The family suggests memorial donations be made to Lett Creek Community Church, PO Box 703, Poca WV 25159.

Helen M. Mitchell
Helen M. Mitchell, 83, died February 28, 1999, in Riverside Methodist Hospital, Columbus, OH, after a short illness.
She was a native of Winfield, WV, a graduate of Winfield High School and Charleston School of Commerce.
Survived by daughters, Muriel “Midge” Mitchell of Columbus, OH, Marcella Roschitsch of Los Angeles, CA; Grandsons Walter, Joel, John-Alex, and David Thomas of Columbus, OH; sister Maxine A. Roberts of Winfield, WV; Brothers, William P. Anderson of Winfield, WV, Dr. Roberts A. Anderson of Rockledge, FL. and Eugene G. Anderson of Hurricane, WV; several nieces and nephews.
Memorial service were held Friday, March 5, 1999 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Columbus, OH, with pastors Roy Godfrey and Anita Telfer officiating.

Mary E. Maynard
Mary E. Maynard, 82, of Winfield died March 8, 1999, in Putnam General Hospital after a short illness.
She was a homemaker, a member of Mount Moriah Baptist Church, Hurricane, and a lifelong resident of Putnam County.
Surviving: daughter, Iris M. Miles of Nitro; sons, Bobby J. of Hubbard, Ohio, Ken and Jerry D., both of Winfield, and Allen L. of Hurricane; sister, Naomi Johnson of St. Albans; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.
Service was held at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Keith Torman officiating. Burial was in Mount Moriah Cemetery, Hurricane.

Gladys E. McCallister
Gladys Eloise McCallister, 71, of Hurricane died February 26, 1999, in St. Mary’s Hospital, Huntington, after a short illness.
She was a homemaker, a caregiver and a former cook for several area country clubs. She was a lifelont resident of Hurricane and a Christian.
Surviving: husband, Orel K.; daughters, Janice Slate of Hurricane and Dianna Casto of Hometown; sisters, Pauline Meade of Foxboro, North Carolina, Mildred Sowards and Florence Huff, both of Hurricane, Ruth Borovy of French Creek, and Clara Sovine of Milton; brother, John Sowards of Hurricane; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
Service was held at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Millard Mitchell officiating. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane.

Ruth E. Meadows, 34, of Nitro died July 11, 1999, at home after a long illness.
She attended WinHope Center, Winfield, and Lett Creek Community Church.
Surviving: mother, Jewell Meadows of Nitro; father, Glen Meadows of Poca; sisters, Cindy Meadows and Carrinda Meadows, both of Nitro; brother, Mike Meadows of Poca; maternal grandmother, Ruth Y. Booth of Poca.
Service was held July 14, 1999 at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with the Rev. Willard Beller officiating. Burial was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House.

Frank R. Mills
Frank R. Mills, 65, of Fraziers Bottom died February 28, 1999, in Putnam General Hospital after a long illness.
He was former general superintendent at Kenneth M. Dunn Co. with 30 years’ service, president of Vida Maze Inc., an Army veteran of the Korean War and attended Winfield Church of God Mission.
Surviving: wife, Rowena Lett Mills; daughter, Melissa Dawn Mills at home; stepdaughter, Vicky Hedrick of Hobe Sound, Florida; stepsons, Teddy Paul Hedrick of Fort Lauderdale, Florida and Robert E. Hedrick with the Navy in San Diego; sisters, Willie Parrish of Vinton, Virginia and Mary Youngblood of Umatilla, Florida; brothers, Harold of Wytheville, Virginia, Johnny of Richmond, Virginia, Millard of Fort Morgan, Colorado, and Edgar of Anthony, Florida; seven stepchildren.

Nettie G. Milam, 83, of Hometown died January 21, 1999, in Putnam General Hospital after a long illness.
She was a lifelong resident of Putnam County. She was a member of Hometown Senior Citizens and a former member of Hometown Pentecostal Church.
Surviving: daughter, Debbie Eads of Poca; son, Tony of Hometown; sister, Minnie Boggess of Teays Valley; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild.
Service was held at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with Jack Garton officiating. Burial was in Barnett Chapel Cemetery, Liberty.

Sarah R. Marshall
Sarah R. “Becky” Marshall, 60, of Scott Depot died January 24, 1999, at home after a long illness.
She was a former employee of the Putnam County Clerk’s office and Stone & Thomas, Teays Valley. She was a member of Teays Valley Presbyterian Church and Teays Valley Garden Club. She was a graduate of South Charleston High School.
Surviving: daughters, Cynthia L. Cloxton of Eleanor, Laura L. Gibson of Winfield, and Linda B. Wehmann of Ashville, North Carolina; son, J.R. Marshall Jr. of Winfield; mother, Ruth Eleanor Christian Hall of Charleston; nine grandchildren.

McKinley Mullins
McKinley “Mac” Mullins, 62, of Winfield died January 25, 1999, in General Division, CAMC, after a short illness.
He was a surveying department manager at Triad Engineering, a former employee of AEP and TAG Architects and a member, trustee and deacon of Winfield Baptist Church.
Surviving: wife, Norma Hughes Mullins; son, Danny M. of Cross Lanes; daughters, Debra A. Sowards of Scott Depot and Melody J. Read of Gainesville, Florida; brothers, Clifford of White Post, VA, Roger of Spotsylvania, VA, Ronnie of Michigan, Willie of Pound, VA, Jerry of Partlow, VA, Larry of Luray, VA, Gary of Dale City, VA, and Neil of Alexandria, VA; sisters, Inus Acree of Luray and Eula Vanover of Beaver Dam, VA.

Cecil A. McGrew
Cecil A. McGrew of Tampa, Florida, formerly of Buffalo, West Virginia, died January 17, 1999 at his residence.
He resided in Florida since 1959 and retired from Chaires Fellow Motors in Tampa. He was a Army veteran of World War II, took part in the Normandy Invasion, 3rd Armored Division. He was wounded in France and received the Purple Heart.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Reta; son, Henry L.; daughter, Barbara Kuchau; daughter-in-law, Maria McGrew; son-in-law, Erhard Kuchau; grandchildren, Bryan and Angela McGrew.
