Hazel H. Woodall
Hazel Hannah Lanham Woodall, 90 years two months, died March 13, 1999, at Memorial Division, CAMC, after a one-week illness.
Hazel was born January 13, 1909 at Lanham, West Virginia, the daughter of John Edward and Esther Kessinger Lanham. She was a long-time resident of Rock Branch and had lived in Nitro for 20 years. She was a charter member of the Nitro United Brethren Church on Lock Street, and had attended the West Virginia Home Mission in Nitro for several years.
She was well known in area churches for her remarkable alto voice as a member of the Redeemed Four Quartet and the choirs of the hometown Senior Citizens, the Valley Drive Church of God Mission, the West Virginia Home Mission, and the Goff Mountain Church of God.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Ernest Lanham of Tyler Mountain, her sister, Ada Lanham Thornton of Bowles Ridge, and her youngest son, Gordon Woodall of Nitro.
Hazel is survived by her husband, Ivan of Nitro; her son, Ernest Woodall, Sr. of Poca; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 15th, at Gatens Funeral Home, with the Reverends Billy Lanham, Ray Humphrey and Paul Arthur officiating. Christian committal services were held at Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens chapel.

Edith Whitt
Edith Fleming Whitt, 79, of Hurricane, formerly of Richlands, Virginia, died March 8, 1999, in a Hurricane nursing home after a long illness.
She was a retired licensed practical nurse from Clinch Valley Clinical Hospital and the Mattie Williams Hospital, Richlands, and was a member of Richlands First United Methodist Church.
Surviving: husband, Marvin B. Whitt; sons, Jerry B. of Kokomo, Indiana, Larry P. of Hurricane and Charles D. Sr. of Flatwoods, Kentucky; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.
Service was held at Hurst-Scott Funeral Home, Richlands, with the Rev. Norman Wilhoit officiating. Burial was in Greenhills Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Claypool Hill.

Alva E. Wade
Alva E. Wade, 73, of Hurricane died February 26, 1999, in Putnam General Hospital after a short illness.
She attended Mount Olive Baptist Church, Hurricane.
Surviving: sons, Roger of Cleveland, David of Culloden, Tim of Hurricane, Billy of Hartsville, Ohio, and Rodney of Ashland, Kentucky; daughter, Gail Moorefield of Beckley; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild.
Service was held at Mount Olive Baptist Church. Burial was in Mount Olive Cemetery. Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, was in charge of arrangements.

Mildred M. Warner
Mildred Marie Warner, 86, of Red House died February 16, 1999, in Putnam General Hospital after a short illness.
She was a member of Paradise Church of God Mission.
Surviving: sons, Robert “Bobby” of Phoenix, Donald “Donnie” and Jerry, both of Red House, and Edward “Eddie” of Garner, North Carolina; sisters, Kay Martin of Columbus, Ohio and Vi Thiabout of Delaware, Ohio; brother, William Abbott of Kenton, Ohio; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.
Service was held at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with Paul Arthur and the Rev. Nyle Fisher officiating. Burial was in Wade Chapel Cemetery, Red House.

Herbert L. Wood
Herbert L. Wood, 74, of Hurricane died February 5, 1999, in Putnam General Hospital after a long illness.
He was a member and trustee of Mount Moriah Baptist Church, was retired from Union Carbide with 37 years’ service, was a retired farmer and a lifelong resident of Hurricane.
Surviving: wife, Macel Wood; sons, Danny and Roger, both of Hurricane; sisters, Sabie Wood of Elyria, Ohio and Inez Johnson of North Carolina; grandsons, Chris, Jeremy and Jason.
Service was held at Mount Moriah Church with Pastor Keith Torman officiaitng. Burial was in the church cemetery. Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, was in charge of arrangements.

Mabel Lee Walls
Mabel Lee Walls, 91, of Culloden died December 31, 1998, in Putnam General Hospital after a long illness.
She was a 57-year resident of Culloden and a member of Zoar Baptist Church, Salt Rock.
Surviving: daughters, Wilma Jean Hartley of Winfield and Velma Lee Crisp of Little Rock, Arkansas; sons, Kenneth Walls of West Hamlin, James Walls of Hurricane and Winston Walls of St. Petersburg Beach, Florida; sister, Ruth Stowers of Bidwell, Ohio; brother, Harold Lucas of Daytona Beach, Florida; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren.
Service was held at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Caudle Adkins officiating. Burial was in Enon Cemetery, Salt Rock.

Amos L. Whittington
Amos L. Whittington, 66, of Buffalo died January 4, 1999, at home after an apparent heart attack.
He was a retired mechanic for FMC, Nitro, with 20 years’ service and a former Buffalo postmaster. He was a member and board member of Buffalo Volunteer Fire Department and a member of the Buffalo Sportsman Club, Viscose Athletic Club and Otter Branch United Methodist Church. He was an Air Force veteran fo the Korean War and a graduate of Buffalo High School.
Surviving: wife, Mae Belle Martin Whittington; daughters, Eugenia Moore, Darlena K. Cain and Martha Alexander, all of Buffalo; grandson, whom he raised, Amos E. Whittington of Buffalo; father and stepmother, Add and Grace Whittington of Buffalo; brothers, Glen and Larry W. Whittington, both of Buffalo; four additional grandchildren.
Service was held at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with the Rev. Mike Tucker officiating. Burial was in the Whittington family cemetery in Buffalo.

Thelma Wilson
Thelma Jones Wilson, 86, of Hurricane died January 21, 1999, at home from pneumonia.
She was a technical librarian at Union Carbide, South Charleston, with 15 years’ service. She was a volunteer with the Red Cross and was formerly of Huntington, Englewood, Colorado, and Daytona Beach, Florida.
Surviving: husband, Robert A. Wilson; daughter, Jane E. Andrew of Harvard, Massachusetts; sister, Louise Graham of Lubbock, Texas; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held at Ascension Catholic Church, Hurricane. Memorial donations may be made to Kanawha Hospice Care, 1143 Dunbar Avenue, Dunbar WV 25064. Barlow-Bonsall Funeral Home, Charleston, was in charge of arrangements.

Josephine M. Wallace
Josephine Marie Wallace, 77, of Pliny died January 21, 1999, in Memorial Division, CAMC, after a short illness.
She was a homemaker and a member of Siloam Baptist Church, Pliny.
Surviving: husband, Odell Wallace; daughters, Geraldine M. Rike of Buckeye Lake, Ohio, Ilene Dubbs of Newark, Delaware, Dottie Sterr of Columbus, Ohio, and Sue Deskins of Kermit; sons, Earl and Lester, both of Pliny; sisters, Margie Reeves of Melvin, Kentucky and Kathleen Carter of Elkton, Maryland; 19 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.
Service was held at Mount Union Church, Pliny, with the Rev. Bud Hatfield officiating. Burial was in Siloam Cemetery, Pliny. Wilcoxen Funeral Home, Pt. Pleasant, was in charge of arrangements.

Betty Lou Young
Betty Lou Young, 62, of Hurricane died July 25, 1999, in Cabell Huntington Hospital after a long illness.
She was a cook for Hurricane Senior Citizens Center.
Surviving: husband, John Otis Young Sr.; son, Bobby of Hurricane; daughter, Tina Womack of Hurricane; mother, Marie Knight of Hurricane; brothers, Bill Knight of Indiana and Eddie Knight of Culloden; sisters, Jean Landis of Ona and Fay Chambers of Indiana; two grandchildren.
Service was held July 27, 1999 at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, with the Rev. Jim Landis officiating. Burial was in the Young family Cemetery, Hurricane.

Delores M. Young
Delores M. Young, 78, of Fraziers Bottom, formerly of St. Albans, died February 15, 1999, in Pleasant Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Pt. Pleasant, after a long illness.
She was a homemaker and a member of Fraziers Bottom Church of God.
Surviving: sister, Betty Crist of Fraziers Bottom; brothers, Jay Devore of Wilmington, North Carolina, Jackie Devore of Williamsport, Ohio, Carroll Devore of Crown City, Ohio, Donnie Devore of Pittsburgh, and Dwight Devore of Fraziers Bottom.
Service was held at Fraziers Bottom Church of God with the Rev. Gary Hale officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery, Fraziers Bottom. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.

Willie E. Yeager Sr.
Willie Edward Yeager Sr., 78, of Hurricane, formerly of Madison, died January 8, 1999, in Putnam General Hospital after a long illness.
He was a retired miner for Red Parrot Coal Co. with 20 years’ service. He was a member of Glad Tidings Assembly of God, Hurricane, and a 25-year resident of Hurricane. He was an Army veteran of World War II, during which he received the Purple Heart.
Surviving: wife, Evelyn; daughter, Linda G. Hammond of Kissimmee, Florida; sons, Jerry L. of Fort Mill, South Carolina, Willie E. Jr. of Milton and Frank E. of Hurricane; 21 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren.
Service was held at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with Pastor James L. Dennis officiating. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane.
