Rachel Naomi Beckette
Rachel Naomi Beckette, lived over 98 years in this world. She went home June 24, 2000, to live again with our Lord. Her helping hands will now be ministering, to Heavenly Saints forevermore. Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday, June 27, 2000, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton with Pastor Paul Meadows and Rev. Richard Black officiating. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. She was born Dec. 11, 1901, in Putnam Co., W.Va. On Nov. 18, 1922, she married Oliver S. L. Beckette who has been waiting for her in Heaven since March 4, 1974. Rachel’s parents were the late Fielding and Ruth Caroline (Bowles) Rimmer. She was the second child of nine and a half sister to Fielding’s son, Don Rimmer, by a previous marriage. Her brothers, Don, Roy Albert, John B., and James Robert and her sisters Mary Maxine Morrison, Evalina Rimmer, and infant sister Virginia Rimmer are also waiting for her in Heaven. Her brother Carl Elmer Rimmer and her sister Ruth Agnes Markin, both of Ona, W.Va., will sadly miss their dear sister. Rachel and Oliver had four devoted children who will also miss the love and caring she unselfishly gave them through both happy and troubled times. Eleven grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren will find it hard to overcome the void in their lives as their beloved “Nannie” leaves them for a while.
Rachel’s oldest daughter, Ruth Virginia of Milton, married Joe L. McCoy. They have a son, Richard (Ricky) of Wheeling, Ill. Joe is one of the Heavenly host waiting for Rachel. Naomi Lee Turner of Plainfield, Ill., married Harold (Hal) Turner who has recently joined the waiting ones in Heaven. They have two daughters and a son, Charleen Frances Connell, Leslie Gail Cirko, and Gregory Lee Turner, all of Chicago. Harry Richard (Buddy) Beckett married Betty L. McMellon and resides in Barboursville. They have a daughter, Janeese Miller also of Barboursville, and a son, Richard Beckett of Athens, Ala. They also have a son Tommy Lee who has been in Heaven a long time waiting for his “Nannie.” Mary Frances Rose and Jerry Rose live at Ona, W.Va. She has two sons, Richard (Billy) Webb of Roach, W.Va., Scott David Webb of Salt Rock, W.Va., and a daughter, Karen Ruth (Webb) Morrison of Barboursville by a previous marriage to Richard Webb. Mary Frances and Jerry have a son, Todd Zachary Rose of Green Bay, Wis., and a daughter, Victoria Jane (Vicky) Rose of Milton. Beyond her family that gathered around her, Rachel had many friends who will long remember the good times they shared with a gracious lady. Her door was always open. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.

Linda Mae Gue
Linda Mae Gue, 50, of Salt Rock, died Saturday, June 24, 2000 at St. Mary’s Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, June 27, 2000, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by Pastor David Cardwell. Burial in Baylous Cemetery. She was born April 9, 1950, in West Hamlin a daughter of Mary Turley Rauch of Vinton, Ohio, and the late Talmadge Harless. She was a member of Salem Baptist Church. She was also preceded in death by one brother, James Harless and one son-in-law, Jasper Parsons. She is survived by her husband, Michael Gue; two daughters and a son-in-law, Kim Parsons of Salt Rock, and Rocki and Jeff Heaberlin of Salt Rock; one son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Marian C. Gue of Salt Rock; two sisters, Marsha Adkins of Albany, Ohio, and Beverly Miller of Kitts Hill, Ohio; five brothers, Timmy Harless, Roger Harless, Jerry Harless, Bobby Harless and Davy Harless, all of Vinton, Ohio; three grandchildren, Jasper and Cameron Gue, Alexandra Heaberlin; 14 nieces and nephews.

Garnet Mae Jenkins
Garnet Mae Jenkins, 89, of Milton, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, June 23, 2000 at St. Mary’s Hospital. Funeral services were held on Mon., June 26th at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, with Rev. Chelcie Gibson officiating. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. She was born June 20, 1911 in Cabell Co., WV, a daughter of the late Rev. John Richard and Cora Alice (Chapman) Holley. She was also preceded in her death by her husband, Paul Jenkins on Nov. 2, 1974; and by her son, James E. “Red” Jenkins on May 11, 1987; brother, Otis “Red” Holley; sister, Sarah Burns; grandson, D. Douglas Clark on April 20, 1996; son-in-law, Donald L. Meadows; stepmother, Elsie Holley. She was a homemaker. Survivors include two daughters and one son-in-law, Helen Meadows of Milton, Josie “Jo” and Richard Withers of Lost Creek, WV; one son and daughter-in-law, Montie and Linda Jenkins of Proctorville, OH; ten grandchildren, Dana Walters, Lois Mack, Don Jenkins, Brent Jenkins, Lawassa Gillenwater, Richard Jenkins, Jr., Cheryl Burgess, Sharon Jenkins, Vonda Erwin and Tamara Setliff; eighteen great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren.

Charles Aley Osborne
Charles Aley Osborne, 80, of Huntington, died Saturday, June 24, 2000, in Cabell Huntington Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Monday at the Reger Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Willie May and Pastor Bill Wellman. Burial in Spring Valley Memory Gardens, Huntington. He was born Nov. 7, 1919, at Wayne County, a son of the late Walker and Lucy Copley Osborne. He was a retired U.S. Postal Service mail carrier. He was a sergeant in the U.S. Air Force during WWII. He was a 32nd degree Mason and he was a member of the American Legion Post 93 of Kenova. He was preceded in death by a sister, Edith Elkins. Survivors include his wife, Helen Sowards Osborne; a son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Linda Osborne of Huntington; two daughters and sons-in-law, Tama and Bill Saunders of Milton, Cathy and Ben Mohebbi of Hurricane, W.Va.; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three sisters, Jeannie Ellis and Julie Chambers, both of Barboursville, and Irene Wellman of Greenup, Ky.; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. American Legion Post 93 of Kenova will conduct military graveside rites. The family wishes to extend special thanks to the staff of Four South, Cabell Huntington Hospital.

Iva M. Franklin Cummings Sword
Mrs. Iva M. Franklin Cummings Sword, 95, of Huntington, WV, died Saturday, June 24, 2000. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, June 27, 2000 at Chapman’s Mortuary, Huntington by Minister Eddie Huston. Burial in Woodmere Memorial Park. Iva was born Dec. 4, 1904, in Branchland, W.Va., a daughter of the late Emory and Meda Fry Franklin. She worked at Westinghouse in Columbus, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Howard H. Cummings and her second husband, Leander Sword, two daughters, Lucille Jones Ellis and Audrey Larson; four brothers and five sisters. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Howard L. and Patricia Cummings of Huntington and William H. and Joann Cummings of Milton. She was the oldest of 12 children of which only three remain, two sisters, Thelma Estep of Branchland, W.Va., and Velva Yeager of Akron, Ohio; and one brother and sister-in-law, Clyde and Ann Franklin of Branchland, W.Va. She had 13 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. She had a special granddaughter, Patty Patterson, whom she raised. She had two loving and caring friends, John and Gloria White of Barboursville, who the family will always be indebted to for the care of their mother. Our mother and grandmother will be remembered for her dedication to her family, her strong spirit and her smile and laughter. She will be sadly missed by all. Grandsons served as pallbearers.

Herman G. Adkins
Herman G. Adkins, 49, of Barboursville, passed from this life on Tuesday, June 20, 2000. Funeral services were conducted Friday, June 23, 2000 at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by the Rev. Zachary Bills. Burial in Watson Cemetery, Branchland, W.Va. He was born July 8, 1950 in Lincoln County, a son of the late Gernia Clay Adkins. He was a 1969 graduate of Man High School and was retired from the U.S. Air Force after 20 years of service. He is survived by his wife, Roberta Maynard Adkins; a daughter, Michelle Adkins; and a grandson, Nicholas Gage Dougan of Fort Worth, Texas; a stepdaughter, Jennifer Cremeans; and a step granddaughter, Dedra Gilkerson of Wayne, W.Va.; a stepson, Gregory Gilkerson Jr. of Salt Rock; six sisters and their husbands, Janice and Paul Woolwine, Mary and Mark Sheets, all of Norfolk, Va., Dorothy Albright of Man, W.Va., Eunice and Delmer Adkins of Lorado, W.Va., Lois and Millard Lester of Wayne, Phyllis Hulsey and Charlie Adkins of Huntington; one brother and his wife, Forest and Linda Adkins of Ona; many nieces, nephews and friends. Herman will always be remembered by those whose lives he touched with his pleasant personality.

Dennis M. Guthrie
Dennis Michael Guthrie, 53, of Scott Depot died June 18, 2000, in General Division, CAMC, after a long illness.
He was a disabled truck driver.
Surviving: son, Dennis Michael II of Teays Valley.
A memorial service was held June 22, 2000 at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar, with the Rev. Bill Frye officiating. Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 1221-A Ohio Avenue, Dunbar WV 25064.

Harry Dickenson Shaw
Mr. Harry Dickenson Shaw, 79, of Culloden, W.Va., formerly of Huntington, passed away Tuesday, June 20, 2000, at St. Mary’s Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, June 24, 2000, by Dr. Terrell Bradley and Rev. Peter Sierson assisting at Beard Mortuary. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, with military graveside rites. He was born January 22, 1921, in Philadelphia, a son of the late Horace and Mabel Hoffman Shaw. Harry was a Navy veteran as he served in the Pacific during WWII; he returned as a salesman for Link Belt/FMC for almost 40 years in Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. He was a longtime member of the Highlawn Baptist Church, a 54-year member of the American Legion and was an active Scoutmaster for many years. He was an avid collector of scout memorabilia, stamps and other collectibles, and enjoyed bird watching. Harry is survived by his faithful wife of 54 years, Rita Hoffman Shaw; a daughter, Joan and husband Coy Mullins of Culloden; a son, Nelson and wife Joan Shaw of Charlottesville, Va.; and three grandsons, Kevin Mullins, and Joshua and Jeremiah Shaw. He will be remembered for his love of family, dedication and years of service to scouting, a tradition he passed on to his Eagle Scout son and Cub Scout grandsons. The family would like to express their gratitude to Hospice for their care and support. Beard Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

David L. Johnson Sr.
David L. Johnson Sr., 73, of Hurricane died June 20, 2000, in Putnam General Hospital following a short illness.
He was a lifelong resident of Putnam County and a deacon of Good Shepherd Southern Baptist Church, Scott Depot. He was a retired insulator from Union Carbide, Insitute, and a Navy veteran of World War II.
Surviving: wife, Ruth Ann Johnson; daughters, Sue Hatfield of Scott Depot, Kathy Spence of Hurricane and Kristi Crowe of Conyers, Georgia; son, David “Butch” of Hurricane; stepsons, Billy Fore of Hometown and Roger Fore of Winfield; sisters, Myrtle Ray of Scott Depot, Ora Arbaugh of Culloden and Blanche Smith of Nitro; 15 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.
Service was held June 23, 2000 at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Ken Stidham officiating. Burial was in Smith Cemetery, Scott Depot.

Gloria F. Sturgill
Gloria Fay Sturgill, 75, of Hurricane died June 20, 2000, at home after a long illness.
She was a homemaker and a Christian.
Surviving: husband, Lonnie Delbert Sturgill; daughter, Deanna Morris of Bluefield; son, Garry of Milton; sisters, Watha Parker Davis of Powellton, Doris McCullough of New Richmond, Ohio, Barbara Ann Hensley of Norwood, Ohio, Evalee Trail of St. Albans, Mary Ellen Taylor of Garden City, Michigan, and Mabel Olive Jarrell of Boston; brothers, Jerry Simmons of Alum Creek and Thomas Joseph Simmons of Florida; one grandchild.
Service was held June 23, 2000 at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Boyd Purcell officiating. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane.

Thelma Hargraves
Thelma Marie Luikart Hargraves, 86, of Goshen, Ohio, formerly of Red House, died June 22, 2000, at home after a long illness.
She was a homemaker and a member of Riverside Baptist Church, Red House, and attended Calvert Baptist Church, Milford.
Surviving: son, Clay W. of Cincinnati; daughter, Lodema Dunn of Vinton; brother, John Luikart of Red House; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.
Service was held June 24, 2000 at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with the Rev. Harold Jackson officiating. Burial was in Luikart-Maden Cemtery, Red House.

Goldie E. McCutcheon
Goldie E. McCutcheon, 81, of Scott Depot died June 22, 2000, in Putnam General Hospital after a short illness.
She was a homemaker and a member of Pinegrove Church of Christ, Scott Depot.
Surviving: several nieces and nephews.
Service was held June 24, 2000 at Snodgrass Funeral Home, South Charleston, with Pastor Jim Barr officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery, Charleston.

Charles B. Parkins
Charles B. Parkins, 84, of Poca died June 22, 2000, at home after a long illness.
He was retired from Monsanto with 35 years’ service. He was a member of the United Steelworkers of America and an Army veteran of World War II. He was a 34-year resident of Poca.
Surviving: wife, Rosalie; daughters, Kay Liptrap of Garland, Texas, Patsy Arrington of Poca, and Trena DeBartolo; son, Charles R. “Bob” Parkins of South Charleston; sister, Crystal Hein of Rock Branch; brother, Lawrence Parkins of Barberton, Ohio; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.
Service was held June 25, 2000 at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with the Rev. Boyd Purcell officiating. Burial was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House. Memorial donations may be made to Kanawha Hospice Care, 1143 Dunbar Avenue, Dunbar WV 25064.

Audrey M. Fisher
Audrey Marie Musgrave Fisher, 72, of Scott Depot died June 20, 2000, in Putnam General Hospital after a long illness.
She was a homemaker, a member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church and a native of Williamstown, Ohio. She graduated from Arlington High School and was a former employee of Ohio Bell Telephone Co., Findley, Ohio.
Surviving: daughters, Patricia Fisher and Barbara Fisher, both of Scott Depot, with whom she made her home, and Janice Smithson of St. Albans; brother, Austin Musgrave of Toledo, Ohio; sister, Ella Belle Hasson of Findlay; several nieces and nephews; grandnieces, grandnephews and one great-grandniece.
A memorial service was held June 24, 2000 at St. Timothy’s-in-the-valley Episcopal Church, Hurricane, with the Rev. Cheryl Winter officiating. Memorial donations may be sent to The Salvation Army, 301 Tennessee Avenue, Charleston WV 25302. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.

Ancil H. Young
Ancil H. “Pops” Young, 90, of Hurricane died June 23, 2000, in Putnam General Hospital after a long illness.
He was a member of First Baptist Church, Hurricane, and self-employed.
Surviving: wife, Mary M. Thompson Young; daughters, Phyllis Rumbaugh and Donna Blake, both of Hurricane, Alma Clay of Tucson, Arizona, and Ruth Shirk of Arvada, California; brother, Donald Young of Hurricane; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great-granchildren.
Service was held June 27, 2000 at First Baptist Church, Hurricane, with the Rev. Charles Hendricks and Jim McGehee officiating. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane. Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, was in charge of arrangements.

Iva P. Moore
Iva P. Moore, 96, of St. Petersburg, Florida died June 10, 2000.
She was a native of Poca and a former employee of The Diamond, Charleston. She was a Methodist.
Surviving: nephew, Franklin Milam of Lewisburg.
Burial was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes. Anderson-McQueen Funeral Home, St. Petersburg, was in charge of arrangements.

Brenda K. Pauley
Brenda K. Pauley, 51, of Warren, Indiana, formerly of Hurricane, died June 9, 2000, in Indiana University Medical Center after a short illness.
She was an employee of Franklin Electric-Bluffton.
Surviving: son, Thomas Jason of Warren; daughter, Carrie Lynn Moore of Bluffton; brother, Charles Faulkner of Culloden and Ernest Faulkner of St. Albans; sisters, Juanita Shirkey of Culloden and Lois Pauley of Hurricane; two grandchildren.
Service was held June 14, 2000 at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, with the Rev. Jerry Losh officiating. Burial was in Mount Moriah Cemetery, Hurricane.

Audra Warner Workman
Audra Clara Warner Workman, 87, of Point Pleasant, formerly of Nitro, died June 12, 2000, in Pleasant Valley Hospital after a long illness.
She was a homemaker and a member of Warner United Brethren Church, Elmwood. She attended First Church of the Nazarene, Point Pleasant.
Surviving: sisters, Beulah Pennington of Eleanor and Mary Lathey of Ripley; brother, Roy Warner of Eleanor; grandchildren, Brenda Varian of Pittsburgh, Susie Willet of Gallipolis, Ohio, James E. Workman of Henderson, and Donald Lee Workman of Point Pleasant; six great-grandchildren.
Service was held June 14, 2000 at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with Pastor Charles Marker officiating. Burial was in Warner Cemetery, Elmwood.

Robert L. Comstock
Robert Lee Comstock, 69, of Hurricane, formerly of Nitro, died June 13, 2000, in General Division, CAMC, after a short illness.
He was the retired owner of Comstock Construction, Hurricane, a member of Nitro Moose Lodge 565 and a graduate of Nitro High School.
Surviving: fiancee, Maryanne Hamrick of Hurricane; daughter, Sandra Comstock of Charleston; sons, Ronald and Richard, both of Hurricane; mother, Thelma Comstock of Hurricane; brothers, Earl Jr. of Long Beach, California, David of Hurricane and Fred of Carson City, Nevada; two grandchildren.
Service was held June 16, 2000 at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Jerry Losh officiating. Burial was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.

Rev. U.G. Wolfe
The Rev. U.G. Wolfe, 86, of Pliny, formerly of Campbells Creek, died June 13, 2000, at home after a short illness.
He was a retired Baptist minister, having served several state churches. He was a member of Springfork Missionary Baptist Church, Campbells Creek, and the Masonic Lodge, Chelyan. He was a former employee of Fidler & Frame Funeral Home, Belle.
Surviving: wife, Marie Hurley Wolfe; daughter, Donna Prowse of Pliny; grandchildren, Tami Ferguson of Pliny and the Rev. Chuck Prowse of Winfield.
Service was held June 16, 2000 at Springfork Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Chuck Prowse, the Rev. Butch Leadmon, the Rev. Gayle Pauley and the Rev. Mike Long officiaitng. Burial was in Mount Union United Methodist Church, Pliny, with Masonic rites. Fidler & Frame Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Addie R. Smith
Addie Robert Smith, 91, of Eleanor died June 13, 2000, at home after a short illness.
He was retired from Goodrich Gulf and the state Department of Highways. He attended Red House United Brethren Independent Church.
Surviving: son, Russell Smith of Leon; daughter, Barbara Leddy of Ashland, Ohio; brother, Agie Smith of Grimms Landing; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.
Service was held June 17, 2000 at Mount Zion Church, Given, with Paul Arthur officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, was in charge of arrangements.

Garry A. Lykins
Garry A. Lykins, 51, of Fraziers Bottom died June 17, 2000 in St. Mary’s Hospital, Huntington, after a short illness.
He was an employee of the South Putnam Public Service District, Scott Depot. He was a member of 5&20 United Baptist Church, Fraziers Bottom and a lifelong resident of Fraziers Bottom.
Surviving: wife, Sharon Chapman Lykins; daughter, Melissa Lykins of Fraziers Bottom; son, Jeffrey of Fraziers Bottom; sisters, Barbara Linkenhoger and Vera Hendricks, both of St. Albans, and Frances Jarrett of Florida; brother, Charles Johnson of Nitro.
Service was held June 20, 2000 at 5&20 United Baptist Church with the Rev. Truman Davis officiating. Burial was in Pine Grove Cemetery, Fraziers Bottom. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.

Vennie Jewel Hall
Vennie Jewel Hall, 86, of Barboursville passed away June 16, 2000 at St. Mary’s Hospital. Funeral services were conducted on Sunday, June 18th, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton with the Rev. Winford A. Curry officiating. Burial in Harvey’s Creek Cemetery, Lincoln County. She was born in Putnam Co., W.Va., on July 30, 1913, a daughter of the late William “Will” and Nettie (Burns) Reynolds. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William Cecil Hall on Jan. 13, 1948. She was a member of Harveys Creek Church. She is survived by one daughter, Hester McCallister of Barboursville; four sons, Dillard Hall of Ona, Jay Hall of Charleston, S.C., Orman Hall of Barboursville, and Elbert Preston Hall of Mt. Alto, W.Va; one sister, Annie Plumley of Culloden; one brother, Ezra Reynolds of Hamlin; 15 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

Lucille Adkins Manns
Lucille Adkins Manns, 81, of Huntington, WV, formerly of Lavalette, WV and Whitman, WV, passed away Wednesday, June 14, 2000 at her daughter’s residence. She was born March 31, 1919 in Logan County, WV, a daughter of the late Frank Adkins and Alice Jane Adkins Morgan. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Otto Manns to whom she was married fifty-four years; a step son, Cledith Manns; one sister; and two brothers. She was a retired Postmistress for the Post Office in Whitman, Logan County, WV with thirty-two years of service. She was a member of Whitman Community Church in Logan County, WV. Survivors include; a daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Myers Jarrell of Huntington; two step daughters and sons-in-law, Remona and Ray Weaver of Jacksonville, FL and Regina and Richard Justice of Bidwell, OH; a step son and daughter-in-law, Franklin H. and Rema Manns of Barboursville; sixteen grandchildren; and fifteen great grandchildren. She was loved by many and will be sadly missed. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice of Huntington or the charity of one’s choice. Funeral services & burial were conducted Saturday, June 17, 2000 at the Mausoleum Chapel at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens with Rev. Hubert Harvey officiating. Chapman’s Mortuary, Inc. was in charge of arrangements.

Joyce Ann McCormick
Joyce Ann McCormick, 59, of Milton, passed away Wednesday, June 14, 2000, at St. Mary’s Hospital. Graveside services were conducted Saturday, June 17, 2000, at the Milton Cemetery by the Rev. Buddy Muncy. She was born October 19, 1940, in Ona, a daughter of the late Roy and Edith Johnson Rimmer. She was a member of Milton Baptist Church. She was also preceded in death by one brother, Harry Rimmer. She is survived, by her husband, Scotty McCormick; one daughter, Kim McCormick of Milton; one son, Bob McCormick of Milton; four sisters, Juanita Jeffrey and Juanema Warden, both of Barboursville, Mary Jane Rimmer and Ruth Lewis, both of Huntington; two brothers, Albert Rimmer of Ona and Bob Rimmer of Lexington, Ky. The Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements.
