Kenneth “Bob” Parkins, 66, of Red House, formerly of Confidence, died July 17, 2000, in St. Mary's Hospital after a short illness.
He was a superindentent for Orders Construction with 10 years' service and a former employee of Black Rock Contracting, LeeAnn Construction and Stevens Excavating. He was a member of Putnam County Coon Club.
Surviving: wife, Violet Gibson Parkins; sons, Lendel, Rancie and Brian, all of Red House; brothers, Homer “Junior” of Hinsdale, New Hampshire and Keith of Red House; four grandchildren.
Service was held July 20, 2000 at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with Rick Legg and Paul Arthur officiating. Burial was in Wade Chapel Cemetery, Red House.

Dorothy M. Wills
Dorothy Marie Wills, 75, of Hurricane died July 18, 2000, in Putnam General Hospital after a long illness.
She was a member of Church in the Valley, Hurricane, and was a homemaker.
Surviving: daughter, Morene McCallister of Milton; brothers, Joe Fitzpatrick of Eden, North Carolina and Alfred Fitzpatrick of Danese; sisters, Bessie McGuire of Springdale and Rose Bennett of Danese; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
Service was held July 20, 2000 at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, with the Rev. David Ashworth officiating. Burial was in Forest Memorial Park, Milton.

Wesley Medley
Wesley “Wild Wes” Medley, 66, of Hurricane died July 18, 2000, in Riverside Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Jefferson, after a long illness.
He was a retired sales manager from Dixie Cap Rubber Co. with 25 years' service and the former owner of Putnam Tire Co. He was the author of “The Original Cowboy Cookbook,” and was an Army veteran, a native of Charleston and a lifelong resident of the Kanawha Valley.
Surviving: daughter, Vicki Medley of Hurricane; son, Chris of South Charleston; brother, Wilbur of Dunbar.
There was no service. Barlow-Bonsall Funeral Home, Charleston, was in charge of arrangements.

Myrtle J. Paxton
Myrtle June Paxton, 83, of Bancroft died July 18, 2000, in St. Francis Hospital after a short illness.
She was a member of Hometown Senior Citizens Choir, Bancroft Church of God Mission and Valley Drive Church of God Mission. She assisted her husband in pastoring Valley Drive and Clark Memorial Church of God Mission.
Surviving: husband, the Rev. Cladis D. Paxton; daughters, Shirley Lorrison of Muncie, Indiana and Janet Saunders of Poca; sons, James of Thomasville, North Carolina and Paul of Bancroft; sisters, Rosanna Payne of Stowe, Ohio and Geraldine Titus of Greenville, Pennsylvania; brothers, George McCroskey of Conneaut, Ohio, Jack McCroskey of Kingsville, Ohio, Charles McCroskey of Montezuma, Indiana, Harold McCroskey of Kingsville, Ohio, and the Rev. Billy McCroskey of Onoenta, Alabama; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
Service was held July 21, 2000 at Bancroft Church of God Mission with Paul Arthur and the Rev. Carl Arthur officiating. Burial was in Schowen Cemetery, Bancroft. Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements.

Ira S. Pierce
Ira Spencer Pierce, 51, of Hurricane died July 17, 2000, in the VA Medical Center, Huntington.
He was a former flag car driver and construction worker and a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War and a member of the VFW Post 9097, Hurricane, and the American Legion, Milton. He was a graduate of South Charleston High School and attended Marshall University.
Surviving: daughter, Tonya Stefanie Pierce of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; son, Tyron Spencer Pierce of Fort Lauderdale; parents, Wallace E. and Addie L. Pierce of Scott Depot; half sisters, Jeanie Roberts of Suffolk, Virginia and Pamela Pierce Sims of Cross Lanes.
Service was held July 20, 2000 at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. J. D. Harrah and the Rev. Kevin Channell officiating. Private burial was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.

Inez J. Eggleton
Inez J. Eggleton, 88, of Scott Depot died July 20, 2000, in Putnam General Hospital.
She was a homemaker and a lifelong resident of Scott Depot and attended Scary Creek Church of God.
Surviving: husband, Frazier; daughter, Carol E. Edwards of Hurricane; son, Robert L. of Kanawha City; sisters, Lillian McClain, Ruth Pauley, Colleen Brynside and Alice Eggleton, all of Scott Depot, Jean Briscoe of Luling, Louisiana, and Arlene Wells of Winfield; brothers, Wilson Joyce of Newport News, Virginia and Hobert Joyce of Scott Depot; one grandson; two great-grandsons.
Service was held July 22, 2000 at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Robert Underwood officiating. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane.

William H. Amick
William Homer Amick, 72, of Hurricane, formerly of Dunbar, died July 22, 2000, in the VA Hospital, Huntington, after a long illness.
He was retired from Rhone-Poulenc and Union Carbide with 42 years' service. He was a Marine Corps veteran, an electrician and a refrigerator repairman. He attended Teays Valley Missionary Baptist Church.
Surviving: wife, Phyllis Ann Weese Amick; daughter, Brenda French of Charlotte, North Carolina; son, Gary of Hurricane; sisters, Marie Ball of Christianburg, Virginia, Beulah A. Pratt of Summersville, and Ruth Ann Ballard of Palm Bay, Florida; brothers, Robert L. Amick of Lenoir, North Carolina and Everette Amick of Leivasy; five grandchildren.
Service was held July 24, 2000 at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home, Rainelle, with Pastor Bruce Young officiating. Entombment was in Wallace Memorial Mausoleum, Clintonville.

Lois J. Shaver White
Lois J. Shaver White, 73, of Huntington passed away Wednesday, July 19, 2000 in St. Mary's Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, July 22, 2000, at Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by Rev. John Lowe and Rev. Ray Vance. Burial in Teays Hill Cemetery. She was born February 28,1927, in Clay County, a daughter of the late Otto and Ivah “Nona” Cozart Shaver. She was a retired nurse at Guthrie Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, Morris O. White. She is survived by three sons and a daughter-in-law, Timothy W. White of Los Angeles, Calif., E. Thomas White and Andrew S. and Linda White, all of Huntington; two nieces, Nancy and Carol; special cousin, Joyce Gibson; grandchildren, Thomas and Christina White, Amanda Morris, Brenda Lynn Perdue, Beth Ann Burdette and Jennifer Renee Knight; great grandchildren, Brian Ray Perdue and Samuel Scott Burdette; and a special friend Rev. Bill Meeks.

Dorothy Evelyn Woods
Dorothy Evelyn Woods, 70, of Barboursville, widow of Andy Wood, died Thursday, July 20, 2000 at home. She was a homemaker. Survivors include one son, Doug Woods of Kenova; three daughters, Brenda Wilfong of Barboursville, Juanita Foster of Milton and Jennifer Ray of Ona; and one sister, Katherine Lemley of Milton. Funeral services were held Sunday, July 23, 2000 at Henson Mortuary, burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton.

Mary Kathryn “Kakie” Stewart
Mary Kathryn “Kakie” Stewart, 71 of Huntington, WV, passed away July 16, 2000, at her residence. Funeral services were conducted Friday, July 21, 2000 at Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville. Eulogy was given by Robert Stewart. Burial in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. She was born February 7, 1928, in Cabell County, a daughter of the late Leonard Basil and Irene Keyser Stewart. She was a retired employee of Owens-Illinois. She was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister. She is survived by a host of nieces and nephews.

Maude Oaks
Maude Oaks, born on Oct. 2, 1903, died July 18, 2000. She is survived by her son, James Bowen: sister, Madeline Drake; brother, Carlos Cobb and a part of a large loving extended family. The other part of this family will celebrate in heaven as one so loved is welcomed home. Funeral services were conducted on Sat., July 22, 2000, at the Fairfield United Methodist Church Glenwood. Burial in the Fairfield United Methodist Church Cemetery. Heck Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.

Paul Gene Adkins
Paul Gene Adkins, 65, of Milton, formerly of Fort Gay, died Monday, July 17, 2000 in the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Huntington. He was retired from the U.S. Army. Survivors include one daughter, Linda Adkins of Fort Gay; three sons, Joe Adkins of Fort Gay, and Charles B. Adkins and David A. Adkins, both of Ashland; two sisters, Brenda Sue Crabtree of Fort Gay and Mary Beth Grider of Mesa, Ariz.; and one brother, Bobby L. Adkins of Fort Gay. Funeral services were held Thursday, July 20, 2000 at Young Funeral Home Chapel, Louisa; burial in Frasher's Cemetery, Fort Gay.

Dorothy Marie Wills
Dorothy Marie Wills, 75, of Hurricane, died Tuesday, July 18, 2000 in Putnam General Hospital. She was a homemaker. Survivors include one daughter, Morene McCallister of Milton; two brothers, Joe Fitzpatrick of Eden, N.C., and Alfred Fitzpatrick of Danese; and two sisters, Bessie McGuire of Springdale and Rose Bennett of Danese. Funeral services were held Thursday, July 20, 2000 at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane.

Thelma Ruth Hughes
Thelma Ruth Hughes, 81, of Milton, widow of Charles W. Hughes, died Friday, July 14, 2000 in St. Mary's Hospital. Survivors include two daughters, Anna C. Pate of Huntington and Bonnie L. Hughes of Lesage; two sisters, Amanda Hughes of Muncie, Ind., and Mary Heise of Cleveland; and one brother, Robert Cardwell of Milton. Funeral services were held Monday, July 17, 2000 at Milton Funeral Home; burial in Culloden Cemetery.

Ida Mae Adkins Thacker
Ida Mae Adkins Thacker, 78, of Wayne, passed away Thursday, July 13, 2000, at her residence. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, July 16, 2000, at Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville by Rev. Charlie Norris and Rev. Ray Knapp. Burial in Bowen Cemetery. She was born November 8, 1921 in Lincoln County, a daughter of the late Jeff and Martha Booth Porter. She was a member of Freedom Independent Baptist Church, Bradrick, Ohio, and was preceded in death by her husbands, Ivan Lloyd Adkins and John Robert Thacker. She is survived by five daughters and sons-in-law, Virginia and Roy Nicely of Barboursville, Joyce and Charley Adkins of Wayne, Phyllis and Eldon Nicely and Betty and Robert Adkins, all of Barboursville, and Debbie and Chuck Mace of Huntington; four sons and daughters-in-law, Allen and Sandra Adkins of Huntington, Rick and Phyllis Adkins of Chesapeake, Ohio, Gary and Tanya Adkins of Huntington, and Earl and LaDonna Adkins of Barboursville; one brother, Lawrence Porter of Orlando, Fla.; 17 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren; and several neighbors, friends and church family. Throughout her life, she was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Her family was the center of her life and they will miss her.

John R. Huey Sr.
John R. Huey Sr., 78, of Hurricane, formerly of Cross Lanes, died July 9, 2000, in Putnam General Hospital after a long illness.
He was a retired production foreman from DuPont and was an Army Air Forces veteran of World War II.
Surviving: wife, Mary Burdette Huey; daughter, Jane Huey Thacker of Hurricane; sons, John Jr. of Cross Lanes, Edward of Milton, Gary of Hurricane, and Gregory of Decatur, Georgia; sisters, Emily Phipps of Hartville, Ohio and Helen Wise of Valparaiso, Florida; half-sister, Barbara Pittenger of Klamath Falls, Oregon; eight grandchildren.

He was a lifelong resident of Poca, a member of the United Steel Workers and a Navy veteran. He was retired from Monsanto Co., Nitro, with 37 years' service.
Surviving: wife, Delores; sons, Gary of Poca and Danny of Milton; sisters, Willadean Higginbotham of Poca, Louella Jean “Bachie” Muck of Eleanor and Betty Brick of Hurricane; brothers, Ferriel of Fraziers Bottom and Buddy Lee of Richfield, Ohio; two grandchildren; one stepgrandson.
Service was held July 13, 2000 at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with Pastor John Taylor officiating. Burial was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House.

Oney McDavid
Oney McDavid, 78, of Hurricane died July 11, 2000, in Putnam General Hospital.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, a member of Hurricane First Baptist Church and a retired vice president of Union Boiler Company.
Surviving: wife, Naomi Houck McDavid; son, William Terry of Eleanor; daughter, Jill Kozee of Hurricane; brothers, J.W. of Scott Depot and Emory of Grayson, Kentucky; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild.
Service was held July 14, 2000 at Hurricane First Baptist Church with the Rev. Mike Derry and the Rev. Charles Hendricks officiating. Burial was in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, was in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to Hurricane First Baptist Church, Main Street, Hurricane WV 25526.

Fred Leuenberger
Fred “Fritz” Leuenberger, 78, of Poca, formerly of Culloden, died July 11, 2000, at home.
He was a retired tool and die maker for Volkswagen, South Charleston, and a Marine Corps veteran of World War II. He attended Glad Tidings Assembly of God, Hurricane.
Surviving: daughters, Marion Sovine of Poca, Lavonne Leuenberger of Huntington, Christy Leuenberger of Hurricane, Patty Savage of Hanover Park, Illinois, and Joyce Wilsek of Washington; sons, Ted Klomp of Ocala, Florida, Louis Clomp of Lawton, Oklahoma, Fred P. Leuenberger of Woodridge, Illinois, and Joe Wilsek of Downers Grover, Illinois; brothers, Ernie and Bill, both of Camden, New York; 22 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.

She was a lifelong resident of Hurricane and a member of Good Hope Freewill Baptist Church.
Surviving: husband, Marshall Owen McCallister; sons, Marshall Owen and Kevin Lee, both at home; mother, Venora Johnson of Hurricane; father, Morrison Briant of Pt. Pleasant; brothers, Barry Johnson, Raymond Eggleton, Ronald Eggleton and Thomas Adkins of Hurricane; sisters, Brenda Johnson of Hurricane, Debra McClure of Kentucky and Violet Rose of Milton.

Gladys Horn James, 86, of Red House died July 14, 2000, in St. Francis Hospital, Charleston, after a long illness.
She was a member of Lone Oak Church of God Mission and Hometown Senior Citizens. She was a native of Kentucky and a 66-year resident of West Virginia.
Surviving: daughters, Juanita Bradway of Millville, New Jersey, Janice Harrison of Red House and Sandra Reed of Buffalo; sons, Harold James of Buffalo, Haskell James of Ashland, Ohio, Eddie James of Canton, Ohio, and Carlos James of Red House; sisters, Irene Withrow of Robertsburg, Laura Belle Blevins of West Virginia, Ruth Van Dyke of Columbus, Ohio, and Tina Rutherford of Warfield, Kentucky; brothers, Cecil Horn of Williamsport, Kentucky and Simon Horn Jr. of Hilliard, Ohio; 23 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren.

Arnold R. Baldwin
Arnold R. Baldwin, 80, of Hurricane, formerly of Charleston, died July 14, 2000, in Putnam General Hospital after a short illness.
He was retired from Libbey-Owens-Ford with 35 years' service. He was a deacon at Sycamore Missionary Baptist Church, Hurricane, and First Missionary Baptist Church, Culloden, where he was also a Sunday school teacher and choir member. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of the Libbey-Owens-Ford Retirees Club, Masonic Lodge 139 and Scottish Rite Bodies, Charleston.
Surviving: wife, Theda Lewis Baldwin; daughters, Linda Huff and Marinda Fallon, both of Hurricane; sons, Arnold II of Hurricane and Tim of Milton; sister, Ruby Burdette of Sissonville; six grandchildren; one stepgrandson; three great-grandsons.
Service was held July 17, 2000 at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Kelson Bays officiating. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane, with Masonic rites by Lodge 139.

Lorena Tucker Haynes, 88, Cross Lanes, formerly of Buffalo, died July 16, 2000, in SunBridge Nursing Home, Hurricane, after a long illness.
She was a homemaker.
Surviving: daughter, Betty Hammons, of Cross Lanes; stepdaughters, Barbara Pringle of Teays Valley, Mary Hypes and Dreama Grady, both of Nitro, Sharon Rose of Ohio, and Joyce Brooks of Tennessee; stepsons, Robert and Edway Haynes, both of Michigan; sisters, Norma Grimes and Eva Wallace, both of Robertsburg, Florence Slater of Buffalo, and Melva Tolley of Dunbar; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
Service was held July 18, 2000 at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with the Rev. Arles Covert officiating. Burial was in Buffalo Memorial Park.

Pauline Sheridan Darby, 82, of Eleanor died July 16, 2000, in Thomas Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
She was a retired beautician and a member of First Baptist Church of Eleanor.
Surviving: son, Phillip of Eleanor; brother, Lawrence Sheridan of Georgia; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.
Service was held July 18, 2000 at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with the Rev. David Panaro Sr. officiating. Burial was in Beech Grove Cemetery, Eleanor.

Lois J. Tatum
Lois J. Tatum, 67, of Barboursville died on Thursday, July 13, 2000, in St. Mary's Hospital. Memorial services were conducted Saturday, July 15, 2000, at the Barboursville First United Methodist Church, Barboursville, by Rev. Monty Brown and Rev. Ted Hambrick. She was born September 16, 1932, in Pounding Mill, Va., a daughter of the late Mercer and Lyda Adkins Thomas. She was preceded in death by one sister, Gladys Ray. She was a member of the Barboursville First United Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband, Cecil Tatum; two daughters, Patricia Hambrick of Lakeside, Calif., and Ginger Chapman of Ona; two sons, Michael Tatum of Barboursville and Christopher Tatum of Proctorville, Ohio; one sister, Wanda Horning of Tampa, Fla.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and a host of several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Memorial Fund at First United Methodist Church, Hospice of Huntington or the American Cancer Society. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements.
