Aileen Lawhorn Jordan, of Crosby, Texas, formerly of Milton, widow of Willard “Bill” Jordan, died May 29, 2001 in Methodist Hospital, Houston. She was born in Milton on Dec. 7, 1920, daughter of the late John S. and Lula Parrish Lawhorn. She was preceded in death by a sister Elizabeth Crookshanks and a brother, Cpl. Elwood Lawhorn. Survivors include one son, Brad Jordan of Crosby; one daughter Suzanne Ellzey, of Crosby; three grandchildren of Crosby; one brother, John Lawhorn of Cincinnati; and 2 sisters, Eloise Braley, of Huntington and Maxine Blake of Parksley, Va. Funeral services were June 3 at Ardoin Funeral Home, Oakdale, La.; burial in Pecan Grove Cemetery, Cypress Creek, La.

Juanita Marcelene Hale Blevins
Juanita Marcelene Hale Blevins, 71, of Milton, passed away Wednesday, June 14, 2001 in Cabell-Huntington Hospital. Graveside services were conducted Friday, June 15, 2001 at Highland Memory Gardens, Godby, Logan Co., WV. She was born February 10, 1930 in Logan, WV a daughter of the late Jay and Flora Marcum Hale. She was a homemaker and attended Henlawson Freewill Baptist Church. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Delana and Greg Hinkle of Columbia, SC, Connie and Thomas Eves of Milton; one step son, Wetzel and Ann Blevins of Dunbar; two brothers, Elmer Hale of Oxnard, CA and Bethel Hale of Henlawson, WV; two sisters, Jean Guess of Paintsville, KY and Janice Crank of Huntington; four grandchildren, Nathan Hinkle, Courtney Eves, Jessica Eves, and Ethan Hinkle. Heck Funeral Home, Milton was in charge of the arrangements.

Carl Richard Cazad Jr.
Carl Richard Cazad Jr., infant son of Carl Richard Cazad and Tammy Johnson of Willow Wood, died Sunday, June 10, 2001, in Cabell Huntington Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, June 13, 2001, at Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel. Burial in Barker Ridge Cemetery. Also surviving are three sisters, Ashley Mays, Breanna Cazad and CaSaundra Cazad; one brother, Daniel Cazad; paternal grandparents, Paul and Dollie Cazad of South Point, Ohio; maternal grandparents, Philip and Melva Johnson of Footsville, Wis.; paternal great-grandmother, Elder Mae Holley of Huntington; and maternal great-grandmothers, Maxine Johnson of Footsville, Wis., and Charlene Culver of Three Rivers, Mich.

Mary Elizabeth Spurlock
Mary Elizabeth Spurlock, 74, of Milton, wife of Clay Spurlock, died Monday, June 4, 2001 in St. Mary’s Hospital. She was a homemaker and a member of Lower Creek Methodist Church, Milton. She was born March 19, 1927 in London, WV a daughter of the late George and Ruby Perdue Wilson. She is also survived by three sons, James Estep of Richmond, Va., Dwaine Estep of Chester, Va., and Michael McKinney of Milton; two daughters, Peggy Hinkle of Chester and Penny Spurlock of Frametown; one foster daughter, Tammy McCallister of Milton; three stepsons, Londall Spurlock of Milton, Roger Spurlock of Hurricane and Darrell Spurlock of Kenova; and two stepdaughters, Vicki and James Kinney and Cheryl and Jorge Plymale, all of Kenova; 27 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, June 7, 2001 at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, by Pastor Ted Nance; burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville.

Stella Marie Irwin
Stella Marie Irwin, 78, of Milton passed away Monday, June 4, 2001, in St. Mary Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, June 6, 2001, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, with the Rev. Chelcie Gibson officiating. Burial in Lunsford Cemetery, Milton. She was born August 22, 1922, in Cabell County, W.Va., a daughter of the late Bura and Anne Sovine Carpenter. She was a homemaker and a member of Providence Baptist Church. She is survived by her loving husband, Charles Irwin; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dallas and Arvena Gibson of Milton and David and Jane Irwin of Milton; one daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Harry Fisher of Milton; one brother and sister-in-law, Earl and Helen Carpenter of Barboursville; one sister, Virginia Patterson of Milton; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Geneva B. Walden
Geneva B. Walden, 87, of Barboursville, W.Va., died Thursday, June 7, 2001, in Teays Valley Care Center, Hurricane, W.Va. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, June 9, 2001, at Henson Mortuary by Ministers David Gladwell and Ronald Ross. Burial in Orchard Hills Memory Garden, Yawkey, W.Va. She was born January 12, 1914, in Lincoln County, W.Va., daughter of the late James Henry and Bessie Mae Egnor Barrett. She was a retired Lincoln and Cabell County elementary school teacher. She was a member of the Barboursville Church of Christ and enjoyed traveling with the Golden 60’s group of the church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph H. Walden in 1992, and by her stepfather, Spurgie Stowers. Survivors include one foster daughter, Hazel Thomas of Weston, W.Va.; granddaughters, Deborah Thomas of Parkersburg, W.Va., and Patricia Coffield of Cross Lanes, W.Va.; and great-granddaughters, Traci Quarrick of Morgantown, W.Va, and Jami Coffield of Wheeling, W.Va.

Exalee Jean Arnold Porterfield
Exalee Jean Arnold Porterfield, 73, of Huntington, died Friday, June 8, 2001. Funeral services were conducted Monday, June 11, 2001, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel by Beth Bondurant. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. She was born October 2, 1927, in Huntington, a daughter of the late Omer and Della Bays Arnold. She was also preceded in death by one sister, Dorothy Thompson. She was a retired schoolteacher with the Cabell County Board of Education and was a member of Kuhn Memorial Presbyterian Church. She is survived by her husband, F.S. “John” Porterfield; one daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Stan Napier of Barboursville; one brother, Jim Arnold of Milton; two grandsons, Michael and Jonathan Napier; and two special friends, Hilda Cain and Patty Childers. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Huntington.

Richard L. Pullen
Richard L. Pullen, 54, of Barboursville, husband of Patricia Cummings Pullen, died Thursday, June 7, 2001 at home. Also surviving are two daughters, Melanie Pullen of Indianapolis and Sona Pullen of Jacksonville, Fla.; one son, Lief Pullen at home; two brothers, Charles E. Pullen of Barboursville and William Pullen of Lewiston, Mich.; and two sisters, Mary Zeringue of St. James, La., and Betty Caulder of La Place, La. Memorial services were held Monday, June 11, 2001 at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Barboursville. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements.

Mary E. Bell
Mary E. Bell, 84, of Barboursville, formerly of Parkersburg, widow of Bennett Carlyle Bell, died Friday, June 8, 2001 at the Inn at Wingate, Barboursville. She was a schoolteacher in Mingo and Wood counties. Survivors include one daughter, Carolyn B. King of Proctorville; one granddaughter, Becky Ceown of Huntington; and two great-grandchildren, Kristen and Nicole Ceown, both of Huntington. Funeral services were held Monday, June 11, 2001 at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg; graveside services were held Monday, June 11, 20001, in White Chapel Cemetery, Barboursville.

Hazel Avis Powers
Hazel Avis Powers, 92, of Barboursville, W.Va., died Friday, June 8, 2001, in Fairmont General Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, June 10, 2001, at Henson Mortuary, with the Rev. Monty Brown officiating. Entombment in White Chapel Last Supper Mausoleum, Barboursville, W.Va. She was born February 17, 1909, in Upshur County, W.Va., a daughter of the late George and Della McCue. She was a retired teacher and a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church of Barboursville. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Orval R. Powers on June 6, 1995, and one brother, Berthyl Cutright. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Jack and Jacqueline Powers of Bridgeport, W.Va.; one sister, Zelpha Newcome of Buckhannon, W.Va.; two grandchildren, Jennifer Marie Gee of Jane Lew, W.Va., and Raymond “Jerry” and Mary Powers of Bridgeport, W.Va.; and six great-grandchildren, Joshua Bradley, Justin Matthew, Jacqueline Rose, Jessica Elizabeth Gee, all of Jane Lew, W.Va., Raymond Jarrett “R.J.”, Ryan Patrick Powers, both of Bridgeport, W.Va.; one niece, Betty Gayle Zickefoose of Strongville, Ohio; and one nephew, Roger Newcome of Buckhannon, W.Va.

Belva Parsons
Belva Parsons, 91, of Branchland, W.Va, passed away Saturday, June 9, 2001, at her residence. Funeral services were conducted June 12, 2001, at the Bethlehem United Baptist Church of which she was a member for 52 years, by Rev. Vernon Perry, Russell Donahue and Rev. A. J. Perry. Burial in Parsons Cemetery. She was born July 7, 1909 in Cabell County, a daughter of the late George W. and Laura Walker Keesee. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin Parsons; two sons, Ronald Alvin and Asa Allen Parsons; one grandson, Randall Odell Parsons; one granddaughter, Melissa Dawn Riddle; one son-in-law, Donald Mays; two sisters, Garnett Harris and Genoa Ramey; and three brothers, Asa, Cabell and John Keesee. She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Pearl Mays, Ruby L. and James Cremeans and Darwin Elkins; one son and daughter-in-law, Densil and Juanita Parsons, all of Branchland; one sister, Margaret Adkins of Salt Rock; two daughters-in-law, Phyllis Parsons and Sue Ferguson, both of Branchland; three sisters-in-law, Rosa Parsons of Branchland, Vercie Parsons of Hamlin and Olga Keesee of Barboursville; 28 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren. Grandsons were pallbearers. The family would like to thank Hospice of Lincoln County and Trish and Pete Williamson for their kindness and care.

Thelma V. Davis
Thelma Virginia Davis, 78, of Poca died June 2, 2001.
She was a lifelong resident of Putnam County and a member of Rosevalley Independent Baptist Church, where she was also a Sunday school teacher.
Surviving: children, William A. Davis of Poca, Claude Davis and Susie Willard, both of Raymond City, Richard L. Whittington of Ohio, and Karinda Goddard of Red House; sister, Liddie Bragg; brothers, John Alexander Harrison, Calvin Eugene Harrison and William Alfred Harrison; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.
Service was held Tuesday, June 5, 2001, at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with Pastor Jeff Arthur officiating. Burial was in the Lilly Cemetery, Poca.

Sadie L. Quesenberry
Sadie Lou Quesenberry, 58, of Hurricane died June 2, 2001, in St. Mary’s Hospital, Huntington, after a short illness.
She was a certified nursing assistant at Putnam General Hospital and a 31-year resident of Hurricane.
Surviving: son, Richard O. of Lexington, Kentucky; sisters, Dora E. Cochran of Branchland, Betty Griffith of Glen Morgan, and Emma E. Harrah of Hinton; brother, Charles Adkins of Palermo; several nieces and nephews.
Service was held Wednesday, June 6, 2001, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley. Burial was in Forest Memorial Park, Milton.

Melvin F. Whittington
Melvin F. “Jimmy” Whittington, 83, of Buffalo died Sunday, June 3, 2001, at home following a long illness.
He was a retired mechanic from AVTEX Fibers, Nitro, with 40 years’ service and was one of the oldest members of Cross Creek Community Church.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Janet Whittington.
Surviving: wife, Ruby Cornell Whittington; daughters, Pearl Bush and husband, James Jr., of Liberty, Norma Jean Witt and husband, Alvie, of Charleston, and Gail Whittington of Buffalo; sons, Darrel Whittington and wife, Carol S., of Buffalo, David Whittington and wife, Gale, of Red House, Dale Whittington and wife, Fay, of Buffalo; sister, Dorothy Reed of Buffalo; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
Service was held Wednesday, June 6, 2001, at Cross Creek Community Church with Pastor Harold Landers and Pastor Wayne Conley officiating. Burial was in Cross Creek cemetery. Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, was in charge of arrangements.

Nanna Hartwell McClure
Nana Hartwell McClure, 93, of Scott Depot died June 5, 2001, after a short illness.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jackson Leo McClure, and one daughter, Candace Ann McClure.
Surviving: son, David Lee McClure of Scott Depot; half sister, Phyllis Nunn of Sod; stepsister, Mary Purdy of Charleston; grandson, David J. McClure of Elkview; grandddaughter, Lee Ann Barnett of Red House; four great-grandchuildren; several nieces and nephews.
Service was held Thursday, June 7, 2001, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Paul Sitton officiating. Burial was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.

Charles T. Hensley
Charles Thomas “Chuck” Hensley, 58, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, formerly of Winfield, died June 3, 2001, in Conway Hospital, Conway, South Carolina, after a sudden illness.
He was retired from DuPont Chemical Co., Belle, with 30 years’ service. He was a member of First Assembly of God, St. Albans, and attended Timberlake Baptist Church, Myrtle Beach, and Kings River Worship Center, St. Albans.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Chester H. and Loretta L. Hensley, and brother, Gary Ray Hensley.
Surviving: wife, Mary Ella Hensley; sons and daughters-in-law, Gary E. and Mary Hensley and Todd A. and Sonja Hensley, all of Myrtle Beach; sister and brother-in-law, Loretta and Haven Reynolds of St. Albans; brother and sister-in-law, Edward A. and Barbara Hensley of Lynchburg, Virginia; grandchildren, Kayla, Logan, Kelsie and Olivia.
Service was held Friday, June 8, 2001, at Kings River Worship Center with Pastor Ron Crum officiating. Burial was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes. An additional memorial service was Sunday, June 10, 2001, at Timberlake Baptist Church with the Rev. Bob Taylor officiating. Memorial donations may be sent to Timberlake Baptist Church Building Fund, 9850 Highway 707, Myrtle Beach SC 29588.

Mary A. Smith
Mary A. Wolfe Smith, 89, of Leon died June 9, 2001, in Canada’s Tender Touch, following a long illness.
She was a homemaker and a member of Oma Chapel, Grimms Landing.
Surviving: husband, Agie Smith of Grimms Landing; daughter, Naomi Bowles of Grimms Landing; sister, Alma Bailes of Grimms Landing; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
Service was held Tuesday, June 12, 2001, at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with the Rev. Herbert Buck officiating. Burial was in Craig-Douglass Cemetery, Arbuckle.

Jane Ella Haga
Jane Ella Vaughan Haga, 56, of Gallipolis, Ohio died June 7, 2001, at home after a long illness.
Born May 23, 1945, in Fries, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Amos and Lottie Vaughan.
Surviving: husband, Raymond David Haga of Gallipolis; daughter and son-in-law, Venetia and Brian Hale of Hurricane; sisters and brothers-in-law, Zoe & James Spears and Polly & John Carey, all of Galax, Virginia; brothers and sisters-in-law, John & Belinda Mallory of Valdosta, Georgia and Cleatus & Gloria Vaughan of Vinton, Virginia; two grandchildren, Ryan Hale and Jesse Hale; several nieces, nephews, relatives and a multitude of friends.
Service was held Monday, June 11, 2001, at Mount Hope United Methodist Church, Fries, with the Rev. Benny Haga officiating. Burial was in Mount Hope United Methodist Church Cemetery. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of local arrangements.

Hazel Irene Meadows
Hazel Irene Meadows, 99, of Scott Depot died June 8, 2001, at SunBridge of Putnam after a long illness.
She was a lifelong resident of Scott Depot and Winfield.
Surviving: daughters, Edith Jordan of Scott Depot and Thelma Vance of Lima, Ohio; son, William B. Meadows of Winfield; sister, Pauline Igo of West Point, Virginia; brother, Ivan Briscoe of Brian, Maryland; 12 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren.
Service was held Monday, June 11, 2001, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with Pastor Millard Mitchell officiating. Burial was in Markham Cemetery, Scott Depot.

Margaret L. Yates
Margaret Lucille Hill Yates, 78, of Scott Depot died June 8, 2001.
She was a member of Riverside Baptist Church. Having lived in Teays Valley for 47 years, she was a 1941 graduate of South Charleston High School and was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 1945 as a disabled veteran.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, John W. Yates, her parents, Louis and Clara Hill of South Charleston, and two brothers, Melvin Hill of Titusville, Florida and James Hill of Beckley.
Surviving: daughters and sons-in-law, Kathleen “Kitty” & Don Chirkey of South Charleston and Terri & Tim Moles of Teays Valley; sons and daughters-in-law, John W. “Butch” & Linda Yates of Teays Valley, who was her main caregiver, and Edward & Pam Yates of Poca; grandchildren, Betty Davis of Barboursville, Jack Carr, who made his home with his grandmother, Tabitha and Nikki Hanson of Teays Valley, Tim “Bub” Moles of Teays Valley, Renee, Edward and Shane Yates of Poca, and Chris McGrew of St. Albans; six great-grandchildren; adopted son and daughter, Kenneth and Alice Rowland of Kissimmee, Florida; brother, Edward C. Hill of Teays Valley.
Service was held Monday, June 11, 2001, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. James H Phillips officiating. Interment was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.

Kathryn P. Edens
Kathryn Phoebe Edens, 84, of Bills Creek, Winfield, died May 22, 2001, in Putnam General Hospital after a short illness.
Mrs. Edens was co-owner of Edens Slaughter House, Bills Creek. She was a member of Judson Baptist Church, Putnam County Senior Citizens and Hansford Center Choir, St. Albans. She was a 48 year resident of Bills Creek.
She was oreceded in death by her husband, Elmer V. Edens, son, Larry Edens, and one grandson.
Surviving: daughters, Nancy McClure of Scott Depot and Barbara Veigel of Nicholasville, Kentucky; sister, Bonnie Evans of Tampa, Florida; grandchildren, Penny Goff of Hurricane, LeeAnn Barnett of Red House, David J. McClure of Elkview, and Sherri Bradley of Melbourne, Florida; sixer great-grandchildren.
Service was held Friday, May 25, 2001, at Judson Baptist Church, Winfield, with the Rev. Fred D. McCallister officiating. Burial was in Koontz Cemetery, Goldtown. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.

Kenneth Compton
Kenneth “Redman” Compton, 58, of Hurricane died May 28, 2001, at home after a long illness.
He was a former employuee of Custom Carpets.
Surviving: wife, Linda Milton Compton; sons, Bruce of Hurricane and Eric of Tad; daughter, Katrina Smith of Charleston; mother, Irene Compton of Cross Lanes; brother, Ronald of Cross Lanes; sister, Sheree Compton of Cross Lanes; grandchildren, Ashley and Jacob.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.

John B. Plate
John B. Plate, 57, of Scott Depot died May 26, 2001, at home after a short illness.
He was employed by the Federal Aviation Administration as an air traffice manager for Yeager Airport. He was oringinally from Long Island, New York and moved here in 1991. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of Vietnam, attended New York State University and was a graduate of the Federal Aviation Academy in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
Surviving: wife, Barbara C. Plate; daughter, Kim Wilson of Kissimmee, Florida; sons, Michael J. Plate of Aviana, Italy and David B. Plate of Jacksonville, Florida; mother, Ethel Bosakowski of Safety Harbor, Florida; grandchildren, Francis Eugene Wilson III, Kathryn Danielle Wilson and Alexandra Ara Plate.
A private family service will be held at a later date. Barlow-Bonsall Funeral Home, Charleston, was in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Putnam County Humane Society, Scott Depot WV 25560.

Carol D. Hartley
Carol D. Hartley, 82, of Eleanor died May 22, 2001.
He was born September 4, 1918 in Putnam County, a son of the late John R. and Emma R. Allinder Hartley. Carol was the first mayor of Eleanor serving two terms. He retired from Union Carbide in 1976 after 25 years of service. He also served as chairman on the Health Board of Putnam County and was Park Board Commissioner and Supervisor of Maintenance of the Putnam County Parks for 15 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Eleanor, where he served as Deacon amd Trustee.
Surviving: wife, Betty Gilreath Hartley; daughter and son-in-law, Gary and Kathy Hartley Brewer; grandchildren, Matthew and Christopher Brewer, Mark and Stacey Brewer Ellens; great-granddaughter, Emma Kathryn Ellens.
Service was held Saturday, May 26, 2001, at First Baptist Church of Eleanor with the Rev. David Panaro, Sr. and the Rev. David Panaro, Jr. officiating. Burial was in Beech Grove Cemetery, Eleanor. Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, was in charge of arrangements.

Otis O’dell Sowards
Otis O’dell “Red” Sowards, 80, of Hurricane died Thursday, May 24, 2001, at SunBridge Nursing Home, Hurricane, of a long illness.
He was a retired self-employed contractor, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and a lifelong resident of Hurricane.
Surviving: wife, Jo Ann Sowards; daughters, Reba E. Rivera of Atlanta, Georgia, Janet Van Chief of Milton, and Vicki S. Freeman of Hurricane; sons, Joseph C. Sowards, Otis O. Sowards Jr., Richard C. Sowards, all of Hurricane, and Stephen Hedrick of Arkansas; sister, Carrie Cummings of Hurricane; brother, Charles Wayne Sowards of Hurricane; 10 greandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

Norma Ellen Brown
Norma Ellen Brown, 77, of Hurricane died Saturday, May 26, 2001, in Putnam General Hospital after a long illness.
She was retired from the Putnam County Board of Education and a member of the First Baptist Church of Hurricane.
She was preceded in death by daughter, Sandra Ann Brown, and parents, Algie and Mayme Clay.
Surviving: husband, Charles P. Brown; sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Mark and Daryl Lene Brown of Huntington and the Rev. Curtis and JoAnn Brown of Ballston Spa, New York; brother, Lee Clay of St. Petersburg, Florida; five grandchildren, Clark, Hillary, Aaron, Sarah, and Matthew.
Service was held Tuesday, May 29, 2001 at First Baptist Church of Hurricane with Dr. Charles Hendricks, the Rev. Michael Derry and the Rev. Jim McGehee officiating. Burial was in Oaklawn Memorial Park, Barboursville. Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, was in charge of arrangements.
