Scott Adam Calhoun, 19, of Hurricane died July 7, 2001, of injuries received in an automobile accident.
He was a member of St. John United Methodist Church, Scott Depot. He was a civil engineering student at WVU and was employed at Cool Ridge, Morgantown. He was a lifelong resident of Hurricane and a graduate of Hurricane High School, Class of 2000.
Surviving: parents, Jimmy D. and Deborah Lewis Calhoun; sisters, Jana Dawn Calhoun at home, Beth Ann Wolfe of Mauldin, South Carolina, and Becky Jo Harman of Lahmansville; maternal grandmother, Margaret V. Lewis of Keyser; three nieces and two nephews.
Service was held Wednesday, July 11, 2001, at St. John United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Martin Hallett officiating. Graveside service was held at Lahmansville Cemetery. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.

Thomas H. McCallister
Thomas H. “Sonny” McCallister, 65, of Bancroft died July 9, 2001, in CAMC General Division.
He attended Elizabeth Baptist Church, Bancroft.
Surviving: wife, Toby McCallister; daughters, Rhonda Legg of Bancroft and Kim Schultz of Hurricane; four grandchildren.
Service was held at Elizabeth Baptist Church with Pastor Jeff Arthur officiating. Burial was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House. Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements.

Elizabeth S. Sellards
Elizabeth Shawen Sellards, 52, of Hurricane died July 9, 2001, at home after a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born in Cumberland, Maryland to the late Juanita Roby Shawen and Ralph Edward Shawen.
She was a graduate of Hampshire County High School and Fairmont State College. At Frostburg University, Maryland, she earned her master’s degree in education. She was a reading specialist in the Putnam County school system and state professional education associations.
She was a member of St. John United Methodist Church, Scott Depot, where she was active in the Audrey Hickman Circle, a communion steward and a chairman of the church greeting committee.
Surviving: husband, W.D. “Tim” Sellards; son, Colby, a student at Fairmont State; daughter, Claire, at home.
Memorial service was held Thursday, July 12, 2001, at St. John United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Martin Hallett and the Rev. Dr. L. Frank Frye officiating. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements. Memorial gifts may be donated to the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance, 9101 7th Street NW, Suite 413, Washington DC 20006.

Dolores Ann Bates
Dolores Ann Bates, 64, of Hurricane was found murdered at her home on Sunday, July 8, 2001.
She was born September 16, 1936, the first daughter of Zelma and Cline Erwin.
Surviving: husband of 44 years, Ronald Bates; daughter, Brenda King, a senior manager with the West Virginia Devision or Rehabilitation; son, Mark Bates, a cardiologist in Charleston; sister, Betty Campbell of Hurricane; two grandchildren; four nephews
Service was held Friday, July 13, 2001, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Bob Forbush, the Rev. Mark Ayers and the Rev. Edwin Harper officiating. Entombment was in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. The family suggests memorial donations be made to the Dolores Ann Bates Memorial Fund of First Apostolic Church, c/o Betty E. Campbell, Route 4 Box 357, Hurricane WV 25526.

David R. Maser
David R. Maser, 61, of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, formerly of Buffalo, died July 9, 2001, at Palm Beach Medical Center.
He was the son of Atha and Florence Maser. He moved to Florida in 1985 and was a bus driver for the Community Transit Bus Company for the past ten years.
Surviving: wife, Jeanette Barca-Maser; daughters, Stephanie Anker of Left Hand, Heidi Marcinkowski of Charleston and Gretchen Varineau of Lake Jackson, Texas; mother, Florence Maser of Robertsburg; aunt, Belva Peaker of Sissonville; seven stepchildren; four granchildren; 13 stepgrandchildren; many cousins.
Service was held Saturday, July 14, 2001, at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with the Rev. Larry Woody officiating. Burial was in Walker Chapel Cemetery, Robertsburg.

Noah Meadows
Noah Meadows, son of Terry Donald and Kimberly Brogan Meadows of Eleanor, died July 10, 2001, at Women and Children’s Hospital.
Also surviving: sisters, Jordan Meadows, Paige Brogan anf Brooke Brogan, all at home; maternal grandparents, David and Belva Brogan of Alum Creek; paternal grandparents, Donald “Choc” and Reva Meadows of Eleanor; maternal great-grandparents, Nellie Brogan of Alum Creek, Sachet and Dot Belle of Brounland; paternal great-grandparents, Imajean Smith and Sally Meadows, both of Eleanor.
Service was held Friday, July 13, 2001, at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with the Rev. David Panaro Jr. officiating. Burial was in Beech Grove Cemetery, Eleanor.

Dr. Robert B. Tyre
Dr. Robert Bruce Tyre, 58, of Poca died July 9, 2001, at Putnam General Hospital.
Dr. Tyre was a self-employed dentist. He graduated from West Virginia School of Dentistry and practiced dentistry in Winchester, Virginia and Charleston. He recently retired due to ill health.
He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Bruce Tyre.
Surviving: mother, Irene E. Woodford Tyre of Buckhannon; sister, Dr. Loraine Tyre of Morgantown; aunts, Mary Hume and Natalie Barb, both of Elkins, Matilda Klow of Virginia Beach, and Inez Woodford of Bridgeport, West Virginia; uncles, Riley Woodford of Martinsburg and George Woodford of Elkins. He is also survived by his former wife, Tanya Tyre and her daughter, Danielle Janiski, both of Poca.
Service was held Thursday, July 12, 2001, at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home, Buckhannon, with the Rev. Billee Scott Mick officiating. Burial was in Maplewood Cemetery, Elkins. Memorial donations may be made to the Humane Society.

Dencil L. Boggess
Dencil Lee Boggess, 68, of Eleanor died Wednesday, July 11, 2001, in Thomas Memorial Hospital.
He was a 25-year resident of Eleanor, retired from Republic Container, an Army veteran and a Christian.
He was preceded in death by his children, Gary Wayne, Larry James and Mary Jean; his father, Hansford Boggess; his brother, Tippy Boggess.
Surviving: wife, Eunice Lee Meadows Boggess; son, Rick Boggess of Owensboro, Kentucky; mother, Gay Boggess of Hometown, sisters, Sissy Anderson and Anna Null, both of Hometown; Sue Buck of Columbus, Ohio, and Diane Mellert of Cross Lanes; brother, Glenn Boggess of Hometown; half-brother, Ray Sayre of Hometown; grandsons, Andy Boggess, Nathan Boggess and Brandon Boggess, all of Owensboro, Kentucky.
Funeral service was held Saturday, July 14, 2001, at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with Pastor James Boggess officiating. Burial was in Grandview Cemetery, Red House. James A. Cook Sr.
James A. Cook Sr., 77, of Eleanor died Wednesday, July 11, 2001, at home following a long illness.
He was a retired lineman from American Electric Power with 40 years of service, a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, a member of Eleanor VFW Post 4400, a Christian and a member of Shiloah Community Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Mollie E. Frazier Cook, and first wife, Eurania Francis “Sissy” Smith Cook.
Surviving: wife, Maxine Covert Cook; daughters, Libby Chandler of Tornado, Mylinda Barnes of Fraziers Bottom and Deidra Fletcher of Oak Hill; sons, Jim of Spencer and Fred of St. Albans; stepsons, David and Steve Covert of Red House, and Jerry Covert of Richwood, Ohio; sisters, Betty Payne of Sissonville, Annie Workman of Charleston, and Nellie Gritt of Buffalo; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-granchildren; five step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; and a host of friends.
Service was held Saturday, July 14, 2001, at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with Pastor Larry Covert officiating. Burial was in Haven of Res Memorial Gardens, Red House.

Howard “Burl” Stanley
Howard “Burl” Stanley of Sarasota, Florida, formerly of Buffalo, died July 2, 2001, of an apparent heart attack.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mildred “Swindler” Stanley; and his father, Woodrow Stanley.
Surviving: wife, Betty Stanley of Sarasota; mother, Edna Stanley of Buffalo; daughter, Jeannie Webster of Sarasota; sons, David and Tim Stanley, both of Sarasota; brothers, Gary and Gib Stanley, both of Buffalo; six grandchildren.
Service was held Thursday, July 5, 2001, in Sarasota.

Charles F. Skeen
Charles Franklin Skeen, 52, of Hurricane died July 12, 2001, at home after a long illness.
He was a former employee of Halliburton Services, Inc. and CAMC. He also was a former attendant for Casdorph-Curry and J.E. Johnson Funeral Homes. He was a Christian.
Surviving: brother, Robert of Huntington; uncle Knoble Boggess of Kenna; several cousins and friends.
Graveside service was held Sunday, July 15, 2001, at Grasslick Baptist Cemetery, Kenna, with the Rev. Charles Bolen officiating. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.

Edna I. Hollandsworth
Edna Irene Hollandsworth, 93, of Boynton Beach, Florida died Monday, July 9, 2001.
She was born on April 21, 1908 in Fraziers Bottom to Robert Lee and Mary Ann Tanner Frazier. She lived in Boynton Beach since 1966 and lived in Michigan for several years earlier.
She was of the Protestant faith and attended First Baptist Church of Boynton Beach and was a longtime member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter No. 238, Boynton Beach.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Asa Hollandsworth in 1984.
Surviving: niece, Beverly Ann (Bob) Bonhan of Sissonville; nephews, Claxton Frazier (Dorothy) Smith of Teays Valley, who were with her at the time of death; Boyde Burdette Frazier of Teays Valley, Marshall Wayne Frazier of Baltimore, Maryland, and Loyal Dwight Frazier of Oxnard, Calfironia several great-nieces and nephews.
Service was held Monday, July 16 2001, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. J. Chester Bird officiaitng. Burial was in Forest Memorial Park, Milton.

Lowell Neal Adkins
Lowell Neal Adkins, 62, of Barboursville died Tuesday, July 10, 2001. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, July 14, 2001, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by the Rev. Ray Adkins. Burial in Harry Adkins Cemetery. He was born May 18, 1939, in Cabell County, a son of the late Claude and Monna Burgess Adkins. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Richard Adkins and Andrew Gayle Adkins. He was retired from Chrysler Corporation. He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Kim and Scott Buckosh of Ravenna, Ohio, Dani and John Welch of Lexington, Ky.; and one granddaughter, Autumn Buckosh.

Eunice Neal Fields
Mrs. Eunice Neal Fields, 73, of Rural Hall, NC, passed away Tuesday, July 10, 2001. Born the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Noble Neal, October 17, 1927, in Milton, West Virginia, her strong beliefs in education and service were founded as she graduated from Milton High School in 1945, received a BA in Education and an MA in Reading from Marshall University, Huntington, West Virginia. A retired reading teacher of Forsyth and Stokes Counties, NC, she was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and aunt. Mrs. Fields was a 31-year member of Frist Baptist Church of Rural Hall, holding various positions from teacher to board member while singing in the choir. She was also a 19-year participant in the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program at Wake Forrest University, member and current board member at the Rural Hall Branch of the Forsyth University, member and current board member at the Rural Hall branch of the Forsyth County Library, and current member and former president of the Twin City Lady Lions Club. In addition, Mrs Fields was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, Forsyth County Homemakers Club, Senior Citizens, and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Elk’s Lodge #449 of Winston-Salem, NC. Beyond her committed involvement with various civic groups, she will always be remembered for her faith in God and her incredible homemade bread - a family favorite; the fresh-baked aroma would fill the air of her home with welcome and love.
Mrs. Fields is survived by her husband, Eugene Fields; sons Darrell (and Joyce) Fetty of Los Angeles, CA, Gregory (and Vicki) Fetty of King, NC; stepchildren Robert (and Jane) Fields of St. Albans, WV, Debra (and Lonnie) Reed of Winfield, WV, Nona Fields of Hurricane, WV, Stephen Fields of Princeton, WV; three grandchildren, Derek, Chasity, and Tyler; four step-grandchildren, Barbie, Bobbie, Elizabeth, and Alan; and four step-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, Emaline Williamson of Ona, WV, Florence Ball of Milton, WV, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, July 14, 2001 at First Baptist Church of Rural Hall by Rev. Benny Sprouse and Rev. Scott Courtney. Interment followed in Crestview Memorial Park. The family requests that memorials be made to the First Baptist Church of Rural Hall or the American Heart Association.

Lewis E. Spurlock
Lewis E. Spurlock, 68, of Huntington, died Monday, July 9, 2001, in St. Mary’s Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, July 11, 2001 at Cross Roads United Methodist Church, Huntington by the Rev. Tim Halloran and the Rev. Bryan Wray. Burial in Spring Valley Hill Cemetery, Huntington. He was born August 15, 1932, in Huntington a son of the late Clell and Vella Plunkett Spurlock. Mr. Spurlock was a retired employee of the Ohio River Company. He attended Cross Roads United Methodist Church and was a member of Huntington Lodge #64 Independent Order of Odd Fellows and Huntington Lodge #313 BPOE. Survivors include one son, Kenneth Spurlock of St. Augustine, Fla.; one daughter, Shirley Pope of Roanoke, VA; one brother, Clayton Spurlock of Proctorville, Ohio; four grandchildren; a special niece and her husband, Mary and Carroll Workman of Huntington; and several other nieces and nephews. Henson Mortuary, Pea Ridge, was in charge of arrangements. Contributions may be made to the Myrtle Spurlock Tape Ministry at Cross Roads United Methodist Church.

Melvin Eugene Raines
Melvin Eugene Rains, 75, of Huntington died Saturday, July 7, 2001, at his residence. Funeral services were conducted Friday, July 13, 2001, at Henson Mortuary by the Rev. William Winters. Burial in Oaklawn Memorial Park. He was born December 24, 1925, in Caroll, Ohio, son of the late Fred M. and Ollie Mae Taylor Raines. He was an electrician, a member of Lewisburg United Methodist Church, and U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Virgil, Claire, Jess and Paul Raines, and one grandson, Brent Boone. Survivors include his wife, Emma Jean Hanshaw Raines; a son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Sheila Raines of Jacksonville, Fla.; four daughters, Connie Magann of Barboursville, Sherry Crary and her husband Dale of Jacksonville, Fla., Brenda Masters and her husband Fred of Huntington, and Deborah Raines of Huntington; two sisters, Irene Fosket of Ferndale, Mich., and Louise Solt of Canal Winchester, Ohio; and one brother, Robert Raines and his wife Doris of Hickory, N.C. Contributions may be made to Hospice of Huntington. VFW #9738 held graveside rites.

Eunice Lester Adkins, 77, of Huntington, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, July 11, 2001. Funeral services were conducted Friday, July 13, 2001, at Bethlehem United Baptist Church by the Rev. Vernon Perry, the Rev. Ray Adkins and the Rev. A.J. Perry. Burial in Marion Adkins Cemetery. She was born January 20, 1924, in Wayne County, a daughter of the late Ezra and Nora Sansom Lester. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Howard Adkins; one daughter, Nora Evelyn Jones; one son, Gwen Jay Adkins; one grandson, Jody Gwen Adkins; and one brother, Ravin Lester. She was a member of Bethlehem United Baptist Church. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Kenneth Mount of Huntington; five sons and daughters-in-law, Glenn and Sharon Adkins, Darrell and Judy Adkins, Carroll and Linda Adkins, and Homer and Vickie Adkins, all of Huntington, and Harold and Bonnie Adkins of Salt Rock; six sisters, Rethel Watts of Lavalette, Beulah Hammond and Zeda Adkins, both of Branchland, Lovie Ferguson and Dottie Goodman, both of Detroit, Mich., and Phyllis Burns of East Lynn, W.Va.; one brother, Ransom Lester of Milton; 15 grandchildren, Kevin Adkins, Kimberly Ellis, Lora Ross, Robin Nash, Eric Adkins, Tammy Bowyer, Allen Adkins, Todd Adkins, Timothy Adkins, Carrie Adkins, Erin Adkins, Michael Mount, Joshua Mount, Brian Jones and Shena Jones; 15 great-grandchildren and a special caregiver and friend, Oney Porter. Grandsons served as pallbearers. Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements.

Willard Carroll Dailey
In loving memory of Willard Carroll Dailey, 58, of Culloden, who went home to be with the Lord on Friday, July 13, 2001 in Cabell Huntington Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, July 17, 2001 at Heck Funeral Home Milton, with Pastor Bill Davis officiating. Burial followed in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane. He was born August 23, 1942, in Cabell Co, W.Va, a son of the late Charles Edward and Opal Taylor Dailey. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Luther Dailey, and his sister, Eva Clark He was a retired painter for St. Mary’s Hospital.
He is survived by his loving wife, Sadie Aliff Dailey; four sons, Willard Carroll and Sherry E. Dailey, Jr. of Milton, Raymond Edward Dailey of Hurricane, Richie Allen Dailey of Culloden and James Lee Dailey of Hurricane; two daughters, Tina Lorraine and Clayton Hamilton of Culloden and Bobbi Jo Carole Dailey of Culloden; one sister, Carolyn Luker of Ona; eight grandchildren Willard Carroll Dailey III, Austin Kane Shirkey, Chandler Shirkey, Brytani Dailey, Ashley Hamilton, Sidney Dailey, Calvin Dailey and Chase Allen Dailey, and three stepgrandchildren Micah Johnson, Zachary Sellers and Joseph Harrison. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.

Virginia Ivaleen “Ivy” Johnson
Faithful wife and loving mother, Virginia Ivaleen “Ivy” Johnson, 7Z of Milton,WV, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 14, 2001 in Teays Manor, Hurricane. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, July 18, 2001 at Church in the Valley, Milton, with Dr. Stan Maynard and Rev. David Ashworth officiating. Burial followed in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. She was born November 20,1928 in Summers Co., W.Va., a daughter of the late Roscoe C. and Virginia Grace Pack Hall. She was also preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters. She was co-owner of Vickys Candy Craft, located in Milton, Beaver and formerly in Charleston. She was a member of Church in the Valley, Milton.
She is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, W. J. “Joe” Johnson; one son and daughter-in-law, Roy Lee and Cindy Johnson of Huntington; one daughter and son-in-law, Vicky Lynn and David Lee Clark of Ona, two sisters Versie Smith of Winfield and Betty Jean and Bernard Herron of Akron, Ohio; six grandchildren, Robert Lee Johnson, Virginia Ann Willard, James Michael Johnson, Kara Sharee Johnson, Donna Lynn Stollings and Douglas Lee Clark; 10 great-grandchildren; and one granddaughter adopted through Church in the Valley, Amanda Warner. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.

Brenda Kay Harless
Brenda Kay Harless, 56, of Milton, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 14, 2001, in St. Mary’s Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, July 18, 2001, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, with Pastor Claude Spurlock officiating. Burial followed in Balls Gap Cemetery, Milton. She was born August 26,1944, in Boone Co., W.Va., a daughter of the late Harry Lyle and Virginia Lucille Thornton McMickens. She was a homemaker. She attended the First Missionary Baptist Church of Culloden. She is survived by her loving husband of 38 years, Billy E. Harless; one daughter and son-in-law, Lesa Lynn and Kelly Shane Woodard of Milton, one brother, Roger and Debbie McMickens of Madison, W.Va.; two sisters, June and Jimmy Sanders of Madison and Linda Painter of Nashville; and five grandchildren, Christopher Harless, age 12, Steven Woodard, age 8, Katarina Criddle, age 8, Dezmond Woodard, age 6, and Austin Woodard, age 1, all of Milton. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.

Hattie P. Richards
Hattie Pauline Richards, 95, of Hurricane died July 1, 2001, in Riverside Nursing Home, St. Albans, after a long illlness.
She was the oldest member of Pleasant View Church of God and a homemaker.
Surviving: daughters, Irene Chase of Scott Depot and Tressie McCallister of Hurricane; sons, Clyde Richards of Culloden, Jack Richards of St. Albans, and the Rev. Harold Richards of Poca; brothers, Glen Childers of St. Albans and Dallas Childers of Florida; sisters, Rena Lake, Bessie Nolan and Freda Wilson, all of Florida, and Mary Bridges of Lester; 14 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren.
Service was held Wednesday, July 4, 2001, at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, with the Rev. Earl Curnutte officiating. Burial was in Mount Vernon Cemetery.
