Ruth Dudley Tripe
Ruth Dudley Tripe, of Merritt Island, Florida, passed away February 19, 2002 of heart disease. She was preceded in death by her father, James Robert Dudley, mother, Ella Rutherford Dudley, a brother, William Robert Dudley and an uncle Caldwell Dudley, all previously of Milton and the original owners of The Cabell Record Newspaper. She graduated from Milton High School as “Miss Milton” 1941. Survivors include her daughter, Jacquelyn Johnson Malmer of Edina Minnesota; and many relatives and friends in Florida and Georgia. Mrs. Tripe moved from Huntington in 1963 to work for NASA where she retired in 1974. Funeral services were held at Brevard Memorial Gardens in Cocoa, Florida, on Saturday, February 23, 2002.

Easter Sunrise Service

Elsie Oleta Jenkins
Elsie Oleta Jenkins, 80, of Milton, W.Va, wife of Malcolm Jenkins, went home to be with the Lord on March 11, 2002, at St. Mary’s Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, March 13, 2002, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, with the Rev. Chelcie Gibson officiating. Burial in Toney Hill Cemetery, Milton. She was born in Milton, daughter of the late Emmett and Mary Dailey. She was also Preceded in death by two sisters, Maxine White and Thelma McComas, and one brother, Basil C. Dailey. She was a homemaker and a member of Chestnut Grove Baptist Church. She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Janet and Bill Kelley, Linda and Rodney Clagg, and Shirley and Don Smith, all of Milton; one son, Forrest “Frosty” Jenkins of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; three grandchildren and spouses, Larry and Melissa Jarrell, Brian and Rebekah Jarrell, and Staci and Dennis Paugh all of Milton; three great-grandchildren, Grace and Daniel Jarrell, and Shelby Paugh; two step-great-grandchildren, Cory and Elisha Goff; two sisters, Evelyn Jenkins and Helen Meadows, both of Milton; and one brother, Donald Dailey of Hilton Head, S.C.

Clarence “Catfish” Gray
Clarence “Catfish” Gray, 84 of Glenwood, widower of Mary Frances “Righter” Gray, died Wednesday, March 13, 2002 in Fairhaven Rest Home, Huntington. He was an herbalist. Survivors include six daughters, Betty June Moore and Violet Beryl Speery, both of Huntington, Ruth Naomi Hartman and Linda Lee Scarborough, both of Lake City, Fla., Wilma Jean Troup of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Madonna Twila Martin of Barboursville; four sons, Russell Clyde Gray, John Wesley Gray, Dorman James Gray and Earl Albert Gray, all of Glenwood; and two sisters, Mary Naugle of Belmont and Edith Barber of Washington. Funeral services were held Saturday, March 16, 2002 at Wilcoxen Funeral Home, Point Pleasant; burial in Apple Grove Memorial Gardens.

Phyllis Ann Hix
Phyllis Ann Hix, 64, of Teays Valley, formerly of Huntington, died March 13, 2002. She is survived by sons, Richard Carroll, Jr., and Donnie Ross; daughters, Laura Chandler, Benita Carroll, Mary Burdette, Donna Wall, and Billy Jo Garrett; brother Robert L. Hall; 14 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren. She was a friend of Bill W. Graveside services were held Saturday, March 16, 2002 in the Baden Presbyterian Cemetery, Leon, WV. Henson Mortuary, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements.

George Alvin Thomas
George Alvin Thomas, 53, of Hurricane died March 4, 2002, of injuries received in an accident.
He was a 6-year employee of McDonalds of Teays Valley and attended Johnson Chapel United Methodist Church, Hurricane.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Garland and Esther Sowards Thomas, and a sister, Beverly Gail.
Surviving: sisters, Delores Kathryn Becraft of Means, Kentucky, Diana Kay Mays of Hurricane, Barbara Jean Legg of Sissonville, Nona Gay Thomas of Lizemores, and Nina Marie Natcher of Scott Depot; brothers, Clifford “Mousie” Thomas and Charles W. Thomas, both of Hurricane; several nieces and nephews.
Service was held Thursday, March 7, 2002, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with Mr. Jim McGehee officiating. Burial was in Mount Vernon Cemetery, Hurricane.

Margie Sharp
Mrs. Margie Sharp, 85, of Nitro died March 5, 2002.
She attended Rock Branch Independent Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Moody Sharp, and a granddaughter, Charlene.
Surviving: daughters, Betty Mize and husband, Sam of Florida, Mary Smalley and husband, Dennis of Nitro, Phyllis Puffenbarger of Twinsburg, Ohio, and Jo Ann Lewis and husband, Stephen of Smartt, Tennessee; sister, Blanche Cutlip of Richmond, Virginia; grandchildren, Stanley, Margie, Sailor, Lewis, Betty, Austin, Dennis II, Marvin, Denise, Terry Sr., Kenneth, Eric, Ryan, and Shellie; 35 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren.
Service was held Saturday, March 9, 2002, at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with Pastor Delbert Hawley and Pastor Stephen Lewis officiating. Burial was in Emma Chapel Cemetery, Liberty. Jesse W. Wilkinson
Mr. Jesse W. Wilkinson, 86, of Black Betsy died March 6, 2002.
He was a lifelong resident of Putnam County, a born-again Christian, a minister and singer of the Gospel He was retired from Libbey-Owens-Ford, Kanawha City, with 25 years’ service, a former coal miner, and self-employed.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Reba Halley Wilkinson; his wife of three years, Elsie Sigmon Wilkinson; daughter and son-in-law, Connie Jean and Marcus Shaffer; and one stepgrandson, Jeremy Scott Sigmon.
Surviving: sister, Vonda Withrow of Melbourne, Florida; daughter and son-in-law, Janet M. and Larry G. Hill of Black Betsy; stepdaughter, Carol Parsons of Poca; stepson, Harold Sigmon of Cross Lanes; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; and a host of friends.

Sidney H. Ellis
Mr. Sidney Hartford Ellis, 67, of Hurricane died March 55, 2002, at home after an extended illness.
He was a lifelong resident of Putnam County and was preceded in death by a son, Sidney Bradford Ellis, his parents, Noah and Flora Hodges Ellis, brother, Paul Ellis, and sister, Bernice Ellis.
Surviving: wife, Betty Jo Ellis; sons and daughters-in-law, John and Denise Ellis, Bobby and Janice Ellis, and Brian Ellis, all of Hurricane; stepdaughters, Phyllis Bays of Culloden, Patsy Ammoscato and Donna Drewry, both of Hurricane; stepsons and their wives, Murphy and Joyce Goff, Randy and Elzana Goff, all of Hurricane; stepson, Roy Gibson of Canal Winchester, Ohio; sister, Mildred Oxley of St. Albans; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.
Service was held Friday, March 8, 2002, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with Jim McGehee officiating. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane.

Joel D. White
Joel D. White, 95, of Nitro died March 6, 2002, at Thomas Memorial Hospital after an extended illness.
He was a retired pipefitter foreman with FMC Corp., Nitro, and was of the undenominational faith.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Bessie May White.
Surviving: daughters, Loyce M. Farmer of Nitro, Joyce F. Howell of Winfield, and Linda K. White of Bancroft; eight granddaughters; one grandson; 15 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.
Service was held Saturday, March 9, 2002, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with Mr. Simon Dean and Mr. Curtis Bauske officiating. Burial was in Grandview Memorial Park, Dunbar.

Maxine Cochran
Maxine Cochran, 80, of Liberty died Wednesday, March 6, 2002, at Jackson General Hospital following a long illness.
She was a Christian and a member of the Emma Chapel United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Cochran; sisters, Delcie Bailey and Oval Slater; brothers, Commodore, Denver and Barthol Reed; and a grandchild, Conrad Cochran.
Surviving: sons, Royal Starcher of Liberty, Justin Cochran of Red House and Connie Cochran of Liberty; sister, Mary Jones of Nitro; grandchildren, Cletus and James Starcher, Bernard, Charles and Charity Cochran; great-grandchildren, Justin, Jarrod and Camichell Starcher.
Service was held Saturday, March 9, 2002, at Emma Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Hubert Groves officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Parsons-Waybright Funeral Home, Ripley, was in charge of arrangements.

Angela Clair Barker
Angela Clair Barker, 34, of Winfield died March 55, 2002, at home.
She was an RN, nursing supervisor at Elite Health Care at Cross Lanes.
Surviving: parents, Leon and Peggy Barker of Foster; sisters, Pam McCarty of Charleston and Kimberly Burgess of Madison; brother, Artie and wife, Kitty Barker of Danville; several cousins; special friends, Steve and Becky Pratt of Foster.
Service was held Saturday, March 9, 2002, at Handley Funeral Home, Danville, with the Rev. John Barker officiating. Burial was in Memory Gardens, Madison.

Russell M. Beckett Sr.
Russell M. Beckett Sr., 92, of Hurricane died Thursday, March 7, 2002.
He was born at McCorkle on April 3, 1909. He later moved to Hurricane, where he resided the remainder of this life. He retired in 1971 from Union Carbide, Institute, as a welder. He was a member of Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church of Buff Creek, Hurricane.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Garnett Atkins and Lillian Woodrum; and three brothers, Arnett, Kenneth and Earnest Beckett.
Surviving: wife of 63 years, Berta Starcher Beckett; daughter, Barbara Johnson of St. Mary’s; sons, Russell M. Beckett Jr. of Hurricane, Blained Beckett of Clearwater, Florida; Landis Beckett of Houston, Texas, Glenn Beckett of Hurricane, and David M. Beckett of Ravenswood; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.
Service was held Saturday, March 9, 2002, at Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church. Burial was in Mount Olive Cemetery. Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, was in charge of arrangements.

Anna Catherine Garnes
Anna Catherine Garnes, 70, of Red House died March 7, 2002, at Putnam General Hospital after a long illness.
She was a former nurses’ aide for CAMC and the former Americare Putnam Nursing Center. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 9097, Teays Valley, and the Winfield Lions Club.
Surviving: husband, Ronald “Doc” Garnes Sr.; sons and daughter-in-law, Ronald “Doc” and Patsy Garnes Jr. of Teays Valley, and Richard D. Garnes of Red House; daughter, Cathy A. Webb of Red House; grandchildren, J.J. Garnes, Richard W. Garnes, Penny Elder, Krystal Pennington, and Jesse Lovejoy; four great-grandchildren.
Service was held Sunday, March 10, 2002, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Berto Harrison officiating. Burial was in Emma Chapel Cemetery, Liberty.

Virginia M. Collins
Virginia Maxine Collins, 84, of Hurricane died March 8, 2002, at Putnam General Hospital after a long illness.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hurricane.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Collins.
Surviving: son, J. Howard Collins of Mount Laurel, Maryland; daughters, Penny Qualls of Richmond, Virginia and Linda McGehee of Hurricane; sister, Pauline Pruitt of Hurricane; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.
Service was held Tuesday, March 12, 2002, at First Baptist Church with Dr. Charles Hendricks and the Rev. Jim McGehee officiating. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane. Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, was in charge of arrangements. The family suggests donations be made to the First Baptist Church Youth Group.

Nancy Whitlock Hall
Nancy Whitlock Hall, 67, of Scott Depot, formerly of St. Albans, died March 8, 2002, at home after a short illness.
She was retired from the West Virginia State DHHR. She was a member of Highlawn Baptist Church, St. Albans, where she served as the music librarian and was a member of the Etta Samples Circle.
Surviving: husband, Ronald Hall of Scott Depot; daughters, Gwendolyn Saulton and Cheryl Roach, both of St. Albans; son, Raymond G. “Jerry” Whitlock III of St. Albans; stepdaughters, Cathy Waltz of Fort Lauderdale, Florida and Stacy Nesselrotte of Madison, Alabama; stepsons, Ronald Hall II of Crystal Lake, Illinois and Leslie A. Hall of Doylestown, Pennsylvania; sister, Helen Proudfoot of Millsboro, Delaware; 14 grandchildren.
Service was held Tuesday, March 12, 2002, at Highlawn Baptist Church with the Rev. Joe Hyde and the Rev. LeRoy Keeney officiating. Burial was in Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston. Casdorph & Curry Funeral Home, St. Albans, was in charge of arrangements. Wanda L. Gibson
Wanda L. Gibson, 51, of Scott Depot died March 9, 2002, in CAMC General Division, after a short illness.
She was a Christian and a member of Community Chapel Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher and was involved in many church activities.
Surviving: husband, Garry Gibson; son and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Shawn Gibson of Sissonville; mother, Erma Fisher Dean of Sissonville; sisters, Brenda Tyler of Sissonville and Linda Barnhouse of Walton; brothers, Doug Fisher of Charleston and Steve Fisher of Sugar Creek, Charleston; grandchildren, Hayley Brooke, Justin and Alex; Hayley’s mother, Kathy Goddard; nieces and nephews.
Service was held Wednesday, March 13, 2002, at Tyler Mountain Funeral Home, Cross Lanes, with Pastor Shawn Pauley and Pastor Mayford Witt officiating. Burial was in Floral Hills Garden of Memories, Pocatalico.

Marguerite P. Hoffman
Marguerite Parkins Hoffman, 86, of Scott Depot died March 9, 2002, at home after a short illness.
Marguerite graduated from Marshall University with a master’s degree in education in 1965. She taught at various schools in Putnam County for 32 years. She was a member of Wade Chapel United Methodist Church, Red House.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Stella Parkins; two brothers, Ralph and Clarence Parkins; and one sister, Bernice Monday.
Surviving: husband, Walter F. Hoffman; sons and daughters-in-law, Carroll and Barbara Hoffman of St. Albans, John and Linda Hoffman of Hurricane; daughter and son-in-law, Charlotte and Dan Ingram of Hurricane; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.
Service was held Tuesday, March 12, 2002, at Wade Chapel United Methodist Church with Dr. James Ranson, the Rev. Billy Lanham and the Rev. Augustus Monu officiating. Entombment was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements. Roy R. Jeffrey
Roy R. Jeffrey, of Barboursville, widower of Gladys Coffman Jeffrey, died Saturday, March 9, 2002 at home. Survivors include one daughter, Mary Ann Hale of Huntington; six brothers, Raymond R. Jeffrey, his twin, of Huntington, and Thomas M. Jeffrey, V.L. Jeffrey, and Stacy Jeffrey, Jack Jeffrey and Paul Jeffrey, all of Barboursville; and one sister, Evelyn Eden of Barboursville. Graveside service was held Wednesday, March 13, 2002 at Oaklawn Memorial Park, Huntington. Henson Mortuary, Pea Ridge, was in charge of arrangements.
