Loretta R. McClanahan
Loretta R. McClanahan, 78, of Eleanor died October 28, 2002, in Putnam General Hospital.
She was a member of Riverside Baptist Church and a former assistant Sunday school teacher. She was a member of Forest Rose Rebekah Lodge 143, the state Democratic committeewomen and the Democratic Committee for Union District.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ival J. McClanahan Sr., and daughter, Marilyn Carte.
Surviving: children, Carol Ann Criner of Winfield, Lynette McClanahan of Eleanor, and Ival “Sonny” McClanahan Jr. of Lexington, Kentucky; four grandsons, Raymond Shaffer, J.R. Carte, Jerry McClanahan, and Nakia McClanahan; one great-granddaughter.
Service was held Thursday, October 31, 2002, at Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel, Red House, with Pastor Michael Hanna and Pastor Don Myers officiating. Burial followed in the memorial gardens. Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to West Virginia Helath Rite, 1520 Washington Street East, Charleston WV 25311.

Zachary Lee Clark
Zachary Lee “Zack” Clark, 10, of Winfield died October 31, 2002, at home.
Zack was a fifth grade student at Eastbrook Elementary School, Winfield. He played football for Winfield Midget B-team and was an avid fisherman and hunter. He was a lifelong resident of Putnam County.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Donnie L. Rice, formerly of Hurricane, and paternal grandparents, Vernon and Tiny Clark, formerly of Winfield.
Surviving: parents, Tony and Tammy Clark of Winfield; brothers, Tyler and Josh Clark at home; grandmother, Rose Rice of Hurricane; many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Service was held Sunday, November 3, 2002, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with Pastor Greg Hudson officiating. Burial was in Sycamore Cemetery, Hurricane. The family requests memorial donations be made to Teays Valley Volunteer Fire Department, PO Box 57, Scott Depot WV 25560.

Lucy C. Woods
Lucy Catherine Woods, 88, of Scott Depot, formerly of Coco, Blue Creek, died October 31, 2002, at the home of her sister after a long illness.
She was a member of Coco Advent Christian Church and attended Scary Freewill Baptist Church, Scott Depot. She was a 29-year employee of Rose City Cafeteria, Charleston, and a 1933 graduate of Elkview High School.
Surviving: sister, Anna Mae “Dollie” Maloney of Scott Depot; brother, Huston Woods of Coco.
Service was held Monday, November 4, 2002, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Lee O. Morris of Scary Freewill Baptist Church. Burial was in Elk Hills Mmeorial Park, Big Chimney.

Dorsel Lee Erwin
Dorsel Lee “Red” Erwin, 67, of Winfield died November 2, 2002.
He was born December 6, 1934 in Putnam County, a son of the late Pearl and Carrie Edith Call Erwin. He was also preceded in death by his infant son, Pearl Franklin Erwin, twin sister, Doris Erwin Whitt, and brothers, Lonnie, Gordon, Elvin, Robert and A.H. Erwin.
He was retired from Putnam County Schools with 26 years of service and was a Baptist.
Surviving: wife, Carol Lovejoy Erwin of Winfield; daughter and son-in-law, Edith and Charles Johnson of Winfield; sons, Lee and Willie Erwin, both of Winfield; grandchildren, Stephanie and Jessica Johnson, both of Winfield; sisters, Helen Hodge of Hurricane, Eunice Sovine of Milton, and Shirley Conard of Hurricane; brothers, Carl Erwin of Winfield and Chalmer Erwin of Hurricane; several nieces and nephews, grandnieces and -nephews and cousins.
Service was held Tuesday, November 5, 2002, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Winford Curry officiating. Burial was in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Winfield.

Homer M. Clark
Homer M. Clark, 87, of Leon died November 2, 2002, in Putnam General Hospital following a long illness.
He was a retired construction worker from Union Carbide and was sa member of Wolfe Valley Baptist Church, Leon.
He was preceded in death by his sons, Roger D. and Jack L. Clark.
Surviving: wife, Mary J. Clark of Leon; sons, Paul O. Clark of Leon and Homer L. Clark of St. Albans; stepson, John Miller of Leon; sister, Ardith Mellott and Agnes Halstead, both of St. Albans, and Uneeda Hall of Hurricane; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
Service was held Tuesday, November 5, 2002, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Wayne Conley and the Rev. Jim Conley officiating. Burial was in Teays Hill Cemetery, St. Albans.

Bryan Dennis Abshire
Bryan Dennis Abshire, 18, of Branchland, W.Va., died Monday, Oct. 28, 2002. He was born Dec. 10, 1983, in Huntington, W.Va. He graduated with honors from Guyan Valley High School. He was a volunteer EMS Driver and a member of the West Hamlin Volunteer Fire Department. He is survived by his mother, Denise Williamson Abshire of Branchland; father, Randy Abshire of Clintwood, Va.; brother, Adam Abshire of Branchland; sister, Andrea Abshire of Branchland; grandparents, Pete and Vida Miller of Branchland, Barbara Abshire of Hamlin; Charles Abshire of Milton; step-parents, Phillip and Robin Skeens of West Hamlin; special stepdad, “Claude” Jeff Dyer; special friends, Ron Porter of Milton, Darrell and Amy Enis of Salt Rock, Brent Mullins of West Hamlin, Joshua Miller of Branchland, Little Brittany of Hamlin; Ashley Carper of Hamlin, Kim Carper of Hamlin, brothers and sisters of Fire and EMS, Lincoln 911, Joe and Tammy Vinson of Hamlin, and very, very special instructor Shawn Alderman. Funeral services were conducted Nov. 2 at the Guyan Valley High School gym with Ernie Vance and Bill Fulks officiating. Burial in the Branchland Cemetery, Branchland, W.Va. McGhee-Handley Funeral Home, West Hamlin, WV, was in charge of arrangements.

Mary F. Cook Bias
Mary F. Cook Bias, 70, of Huntington, W.Va., died Friday, Nov. 1, 2002. Services were held Monday, Nov. 4, 2002 at Woodmere Abbey of Remembrance with Monsignor Lawrence Luciana officiating. Mary was born Jan. 31, 1932, in Gallipolis Ferry, W.Va., a daughter of the late George W. and Myrtle French Cook. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Doyle T. Bias, five sisters and three brothers. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy L. and Michael Adkins; a son, Gary Heck and his wife, Frances; their three children; a very special granddaughter, Mitzi R. Meade and her husband, Greg; and two great grandchildren, Tucker G. Meade and Brock A. Meade, all of Huntington. Dorsel Lee “Red” Erwin
Dorsel Lee “Red” Erwin, 67, of Winfield went home to be with the Lord on Nov. 2, 2002. He was born Dec. 6, 1934, in Putnam County, W.Va., a son of the late Pearl and Carrie Edith Call Erwin. He was retired from Putnam County schools with 26 years of service and of the Baptist faith. He was also preceded in death by his infant son, Pearl Franklin Erwin; twin sister, Doris Erwin Whitt; and brothers, Lonnie, Gordon, Elvin, Robert and A.H. Erwin. He is survived by his wife, Carol Lovejoy Erwin of Winfield; daughter and son-in-law, Edith and Charles Johnson of Winfield; sons, Lee Erwin and Willie Erwin, both of Winfield; grandchildren, Stephanie and Jessica Johnson both of Winfield; sisters, Helen Hodge of Hurricane, Eunice Sovine of Milton and Shirley Conard of Hurricane; brothers, Carl Erwin of Winfield and Chalmer Erwin of Hurricane; and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins. Gary H. Leach
Gary H. Leach, 71, of Barboursville, passed away Sunday, Oct. 27, 2002 at home. Funeral services were held November 2, 2002 at Beard Mortuary with the Rev. W Ford Price officiating. Entombment in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens. He was born Sept. 30, 1931, in Huntington, a son of the late Claude T. and Noriene L. Harwood. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret O. Vandall. He was a retired electrician from Steel of West Virginia (H.K Porter/Connors Steel) after 38 years of service. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1952-1956. He was a member of the Lavalette Golf Club. An avid golfer, he was proud of his two holes-in-one. He also enjoyed making special gifts for family and friends in his woodworking shop. He is survived by his wife and best friend, Victoria A. Leach; father and mother-in-law, Bill and Pat Scott of Binghamton, N.Y.; brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Gail Scott of Glenwood, Fla.; sister-in-law, Patti Scott of Binghamton, N.Y.; sister and brother-in-law, Stephanie and Larry Korell of Binghamton, N.Y.; sisters-in-law Laurie Scott and Martha Campbell of Mars, Pa.; brother-in-law, Junior Vandall of Barboursville; nieces Aja and Nicole Yurek of Binghamton, N.Y.; niece Rena Kaye Black, her husband Mike and children Adam and Katy of Huntington; nephew Stephen Vandall his wife Barbara and son Cain of Huntington; very special cousin Trudy Campbell of Las Vegas, Nev.; and a host of friends. He was very active and a grateful member of the Beverly Hills Unity Group for 16 years. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Eliza “Elizabeth” Blower
Eliza “Elizabeth” Blower, 95, of Huntington died Monday, Oct. 28, 2002 in Burns Nursing Home, Russellville, Ala. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002 at Henson Mortuary by the Rev. Don Napier. Burial followed in Woodmere Memorial Park. She was born Feb. 28, 1907, in Knott County, Kentucky, daughter of the late Sylvester and Fannie Napier Patrick. She was also preceded in death in 1987 by her husband, Wilson Blower, and by a grandson, Michael Armstrong. Mrs. Blower was retired from Perry-Norvell Shoe Co., and a member of Thomas Memorial Freewill Baptist Church. Survivors include a son, Eugene Blower of Huntington; two daughter, Deloris Patterson of Russellville, Ala., and Wilma Lanyon of Okeechobee, Fla; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren. Henson Mortuary, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements.

Carol L. Kinnard
Carol L. Kinnard passed from this life, Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002 at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Huntington, WV, and went home to the Father. His fondest wish was that we all join him there. Carol was born Nov. 3, 1918 in Hurricane, WV, a son of the late Rufus and Sarah Forth Kinnard. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Lawnie Kinnard, and brother and sister in-law, Harry and Mae Kinnard. He served in the Navy during World War II and retired from ACF Industries of Huntington. He considered both Bethany Baptist Church of Culloden and Valley View Baptist Church of Hurricane his home churches. Survivors include his wife, Mildred; three children and one daughter-in-law, Marie Maitland of Disputanta, Va., Lee and Betty Kinnard of Culloden, and Karen Lunsford of Culloden; one brother and spouse, Levi and Ramelda Kinnard of Spencer, WV, and a sister, Jewel Stewart of Milton; sister-in-law, Reba Fizer of Huntington; seven grandchildren and their spouses, Barbara and Jim Holmes of Odenton, Md., Denise and Stanley Brockwell of Disputanta, VA., Shelly and John Anderson of Mountain Home, Idaho, Rick and Kim Kinnard of Linden, Mich., Brooke Lunsford of Culloden, Greg and Jeanne Lunsford of Milton, and Brian Kinnard of Teays Valley; three great-grandchildren and spouse, April and Jon Hayden of Odenton, Md., Joe Anderson of Mountain Home, Idaho, and Samantha Kinnard of Linden, Mich.; one great-great-granddaughter, Karter Hayden of Odenton, Md.; several nieces and nephews, and many, many dear friends he loved. Funeral services were conducted Friday, November 1, 2002 at Heck Funeral Home, Milton with Pastor Rick Mayes and Pastor Jason Black officiating. Burial followed in Culloden Cemetery. Laura Hazel Riffe
Mrs. Laura Hazel Riffe, 87, of Barboursville, WV, passed peacefully into eternal rest Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002 in Panama City, Fla., after a brief illness. She was a lifelong resident of West Virginia, born on May 4, 1915, the daughter of the late Malinda Ramey Price and Robert Price. Hazel was the sixth of twelve children born to a pioneer Lincoln County family, and was the widow of Charles O. “Buster” Riffe. She came to Logan in the 1930s, and was employed in the restaurant business. Mr. and Mrs. Riffe moved to Barboursville in 1955, in order that all their children could attend Marshall University. Their graduations were some of her greatest joy. She and her husband were owners of the High School Sandwich Shop in Barboursville. Mrs. Riffe was a member of Aracoma Church of God and was a devoted mother to her five children, who will miss her dearly. She is survived by two daughters, three sons and their spouses and six grandchildren, Mr. and Mrs. Vordaman (Nancy) Van Bibber, Sandra and Andrew Wing of Panama City, Mr. and Mrs. Bill (Frances) Allen of Hurricane, WV, Brad, Jill, Justine and Bain Allen, Matthew and Debby Allen, all of Cincinnati, Ed, Linda, Scott and Diane Riffe of Mission Viejo, Calif., Charles and Jeanette Riffe of Leesburg, Fla., Dr. John and Delberta Riffe of Milton, WV, Mason Riffe of Huntington, WV; two sisters, Annie Miller of Hamlin, WV, and Dollie Reed of Belleville, Mich. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, Oct. 31st, at Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville with the Rev. Monty Brown officiating. Burial in Ridgelawn Memorial Park.

Donna Jean Setliff
Donna Jean Setliff, 51, of Fraziers Bottom, wife of James D. Setliff, died Sunday, October 27, 2002, in St. Mary’s Medical Center. Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 30th at Heck Funeral Home, Milton.

Iva Lee “Una” Bowman
Loving mother, Iva Lee “Una” Bowman, 74, of Huntington, formerly of Lesage, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002 at St. Mary’s Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Friday, Nov. 1, 2002 at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel. Entombment at the Reflection Mausoleum at Forest Memorial Park, Milton. She was born Nov. 12, 1927, in Cabell County, a daughter of the late Elva and Wilda Rutherford Scarberry. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Otho Bowman and one sister, Luoma Adams. She was a hygienist at Green Acres Regional Center. She is survived by one daughter, Diana Legg of Ironton, Ohio; Virgil “Butch” Adams, whom she loved and raised as her son and his wife Sheila and their children, Stefanie Armstrong and her husband Jeff, and Jeremy Adams and his wife Jodi; two brothers, Floyd Scarberry and his wife Lucy of Milton, and Lloyd Scarberry of North Carolina; two sisters, Ruth Davis of Milton and Sally Wood of Huntington; two sisters-in-law, Mary Clary and Addie Clary and one brother-in-law, Johnny all of Lesage; and two special nieces, Becky Sue Glover and Kimberly Scarberry. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Green Acres Regional Center, Ohio River Road, Lesage, WV.

Venus L. LeGrand May
Venus L. LeGrand May, 77, of Huntington, was called home to heaven by her Lord and Savior Jesus, on Oct. 26, 2002, at St. Mary’s Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002, at Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville, by Dr. Larry Greene. Burial in Highland Cemetery, Huntington. She was born on Oct. 30, 1924, in Mason County, a daughter of the late George Albert and Florence Rosalie Steele Johnson. She was a member of River Cities Community Church. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Claude Donald LeGrand, and one brother James Leland Johnson. She is survived by her husband Edgar W. May; two daughters and sons-in-law, Becky and James Williams of Wilmington, N.C., and Donna and Marvin Malicoat of Indianapolis, Ind.; one son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Cindy LeGrand of Huntington; one stepson, Thomas May of Ashland, Ky.; one stepdaughter, Catherine Wiess of Huntington; and five stepgrandchildren, Amanda Wiess of Huntington, Edgar W. May II of Columbus, Mignon Malicoat, Michaela Malicoat and Remi Dubois, all of Indianapolis; one brother, Guy Johnson of Huntington; two grandchildren, Jason Williams and Noah LeGrand.

Francis A. Akers
Francis A. Akers, 80, of Milton, widower of Bettie Akers, died Monday, October 28, 2002 in the Huntington VA Medical Center. He was a machine tool repairman at Ravenswood Aluminum. Graveside services were conducted Wednesday, October 30, 2002 in White Chapel Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel, Barboursville. Arrangements by Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley.

Rebekah Jane Everett
Rebekah Jane Everett, 98, of Barboursville, widow of Dallas Dailey, died Sunday, October 27, 2002 at Sunbridge of Putnam Care Home. She is survived by two nieces, Shirly Turrill and Sharon Doersam. Graveside services were held Wednesday, October 30, 2002 at Spring Hill Cemetery, Huntington. Beard Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
