Fleary C. “Butch” Chandler, 80, of Poca died February 21, 2003, at home after a long illness.
He was a retired employee of Union Caride of 35 years. He was a member of Rock Branch Independent Church. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and papaw to all.
Surviving: his wife of 58 years, Janice Hanson Chandler; children, Jerry Chadler and wife, Pat of St. Albans, Nancee Gunter and husband, Keith of Cross Lanes, Patti McClanahan and husband, Roger of Fayetteville, Dicky Chandler of Poca; grandchildren, Rocky and Casey Chandler, Scott Thomas and Trisha Graves, Chasity Hylton, Todd and Chad McClanahan, Heather and Brian Chandler; great-grandchildren, Hunter, Madison and Sarah Chandler, Haley and Gretchen Thomas, Lyndsey and Jake Graves, Jarrett and Kaitlyn Hylton; brother, Jack Chandler of Clendenin.
Service was held Monday, February 24, 2003, at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with Pastor Delbert Hawley officiating. Burial was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House.

D. Doyle Fisher
D. Doyle Fisher, 83, of Red House died February 21, 2003, in Thomas Memorial Hospital.
He was a 53-year resident of Red House, retired from Laborers Union Local No. 1353 with 50 years of service, and a member of Paradise Church of God Mission.
Surviving: wife, Phyllis Casto Fisher; sons and their spouses, Garry and Joyce Fisher of Winfield, Jerry and Rose Fisher of Winfield, Rick and Jill Fisher of Red House; sister, Bernice Shinn of Symerna, Tennessee; brother, Roy Fisher of Dunbar; granddaughters, Tina and Mikayla; grandsons, Jody, Jonathan, Jeremy and Dakota; two step-grandchildren, Denise and Candi.
Service was held Monday, February 24, 2003, at Paradise Church of God Mission with Paul Arthur, Pastor Ron Brown and Pastor Doug McComas officiating. Burial was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House. Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements.

Scarlet Penny Black
Scarlet Penny Black, 36, of Ona passed away Friday, Feb. 21, 2003, in Charleston Area Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 24, 2003, at Wallace Funeral Home, Milton, W.Va., by Pastor Jack Lawrence and the Rev. Richard Black. Burial in Maupin Cemetery. She was born Oct. 10, 1966, in Lincoln County, W.Va., a daughter of the late Richard C. and Ruby Arlene Carpenter Black. She was the granddaughter of the late Homer and Bertha Carpenter and the late James A. and Bertha Black. She is survived by one sister, Dreama Black of Charleston WVa.; one brother, Elza “Butch” Black of Gallipolis Ferry, W.Va.; seven nieces and nephews; and many friends. Wallace Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.

Deborah Ann “Debbie” Black Vititoe’
Deborah Ann “Debbie” Black Vititoe, 41, of New Tazewell, Tenn, formerly of Huntington, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003 University of Tennessee Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2003, at Heck Funeral Home with Pastor Winford Curry officiating. She was born June 4, 1961, a daughter of Hershel Black of Wayne, W.Va.. and the late Lois Childers Black. She also was preceded in death by her father-in-law, Oliver “Pete” Vititoe and mother-in-law, Leona Ball Vititoe. Debbie was a loving mother and wife to her family. She is survived by her husband, Verlin Vititoe; daughters, Melissa, Marissa and Lois; and brother, David Black of Wayne. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements. Ethel Marie Davis
Ethel Marie Davis, 87, of Lakeland, Fla, and Huntington went home to be with the Lord Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003. Funeral services were conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2003, at Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by Pastor Donnie McCloud. Entombment in Forest Lawn Memorial Garden Mausoleum. She was born Oct 29, 1915, in Greenup, Ky, a daughter of the late James and Ida Snyder Horsley. She was. also preceded in death by her husband of 68 years George F. Davis; six brothers, Delbert, Luther, Teddy, Shirley, Clifford and Bill Horsley; one sister, Bertha Clyce; and one grandson, George F. “Frankie” Davis III. She was a retired LPN from Cabell Huntington Hospital and she attended River Cities Lighthouse Church. Survivors include two daughters and one son-in-law, Delores McCloud of Huntington, with whom she made her home, and Juanita and Buddy Wilson of Lakeland, Fla.; two sons and daughters-in-law, George F. Jr. and Louise Davis of Huntington and Billy and Betty Davis of Lakeland; one sister, Dorothy Waughs of Ohio; 11 grandchildren, Donnie McCloud, Teresa Rickman, Debbie Hysell, Cathy Jackson, Danny McCloud, Rhonda Dannison, Bernice Adkins, Billy Davis, Roger Kitchen, Vickie Wiley and Ethel Franklin; 20 great-grandchildren; 23 great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends. Reinhold William Guenther
Reinhold William Guenther, 63, of Barboursville, widower of Myrtle M. Guenther, died Friday, Feb. 21, 2003, in St Joseph Hospital, Parkersburg, WV. He was born Aug 9,1939, in New York City, a son of Mrs. Grace Anna Guenther of Huntington and the late Reinhold Friedrick Guenther. He was a metalurical engineer for Huntington Alloys and a member of Pea Ridge United Methodist Church In addition to his mother, he is survived by his mother-in-law, Annis Blessing of Point Pleasant, WV; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, William E and Allene Blessing of Harrisburg, Va; a sister and brother-in-law, Delores and Jerald McCallister, of Williamstown, W.Va.; four exchange students, Clause Justensen of Denmark, Sven Arnolds of Germany, Thomas Heingarten of Switzerland and Axel Bergt of Germany; nieces, Carole McCallister and Chris Nickel of Columbus, Ohio, Susan and John Richards of St. Albans, WVa, Anne and Thomas Moore of Springfield, Va, Laura McCallister of Columbus, Ohio, and Nancy and Vince Mammano of Richmond, Va.; and nephews, Jeffrey and Ann Marie McCallister and David McCallister, all of Columbus, Ohio. Floyd “Charley” Barber
Mr. Floyd “Charley” Barber, 79, of Milton, died Jan. 8, 2003, in VA Medical Center. A memorial service was conducted at Grace Gospel Church on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003, by Pastor Jerry Matt. Charley was born Aug. 26, 1923, a son of the late Luther and Jennie Harvey Barber. He served in The U.S. Army, worked at Valley Bell Creamer for 28 years, and Black and White Cab for 11 years. He also is preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers. Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Bobby Knight Barber; two daughters and one son-in-law, Melissa “Lisa” and Mark Stanley of Georgia and Melanie Barber of Nebraska; one stepdaughter, Nancy Childers of Georgia; five grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, one step-great-grandchild.

Michael S. “Mike” Cobb
Michael S. “Mike” Cobb, 52, of Barboursville, W.Va., died Monday, Feb. 17, 2003, at University of Kentucky Medical Center. Funeral services were held on Friday, February 21, 2003 at Beard Mortuary with Dr. Jack Mayes officiating. Entombment in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. He was born Dec. 26, 1950, in Huntington, W.Va. Mike served his machinist apprenticeship at INCO Alloys International Inc. and was a retired machinist with CSX. He was an Army Sergeant in the 1st Air Cavalry during the Vietnam War. He was preceded in death by his father, Gene A. Cobb, his stepfather, Bill Sanders, paternal grandparents, Grace and Thomas Cobb and maternal grandparents, Edith and Earl O. Walton. Mike was a loving son, husband, father and grandfather and will be sadly missed by his family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Linda Hart Cobb; his mother, Wanda Jean Cobb Sanders of Huntington; two sons, Joshua Michael Cobb and his companion Cynthia Brumfield of Barboursville, W.Va., and Joseph Henry Cobb of Barboursville; a grandson Christopher Michael Cobb; a step grandson, Devan Brumfield; and special aunt and uncle, Lillie Mae Walton and Earl S. Omar O. Kirtley
Omar O. Kirtley, 85, of Waverly, N.Y., formerly of Milton, husband of Betty Kirtley, died Feb. 11, 2003, in Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre, N.Y. He was retired owner/operator of Omar’s Gas Station. Also surviving are two sons, Terry Kirtley of Blue Ridge, Va., and Daniel Kirtley of Sayre; two grandchildren, Chase Kirtley of Blue Ridge and Ryan Kirtley of Sayre; three sisters, Eva Williams, Havannah Bragg and Glenna Harbour, all of Milton; and a brother, Harry Kirtley of Milton. Funeral services were held Feb. 14, 2003 in New York.

Bertha Thelma Gill Plybon
Bertha Thelma Gill Plybon, 97, formerly of Westernport, Md, died Friday, Feb. 14, 2003, at the Cuppett-Weeks Nursing Home, Oakland, Md. She was born Aug. 7, 1905, in Huntington, W.Va., the daughter of the late Hezikah and Dottie Hite Gill. She was also preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. George F. Plybon in 1961, four brothers and three sisters. She is survived by three sons and one daughter, the Rev. Frank Plybon and his wife Marsha of Parkersburg, W.Va., John Plybon and his wife Joan of Summerfield, N.C., Dr. Ben Plybon and his wife Marlene of Lewisburg, W.Va., and Betty Howard and her husband Jim of Westernport, MD. She is also survived by three brothers and one sister, Norman Gill, Bill Gill and his wife Virginia, and Bob Gill and his wife Marion, all of Huntington, and Christine Ladd and her husband Rolland of Tucscon Ariz.; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Mrs. Plybon was an elementary schoolteacher in West Virginia and Ohio, and was active the United Methodist Church. She served in the United Methodist Women organization and held several offices, both local and district. She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, Piedmont, W.Va., and the Ninth Ave. UMC in Huntington. Funeral services were conducted at the Trinity United Methodist Church with the Rev. Elizabeth Allen Villinger officiating. Services were conducted Feb. 20, 2003, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by the Rev. Ed Hood. Interment in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. Dortha M. Gillispie Woodard
Dortha M. Gillispie Woodard, 90, of Milton, went home in the arms of Jesus to be with her husband, Ivan E Woodard, Sunday, February 16, 2003, at her daughter, Jean Wright’s residence. Funeral service were conducted Wednesday, February 19, 2003, at Heck Funeral Home Milton with the Rev. Kim Stone and the Rev. Kevin Shull officiating. She was born August 31, 1912, a daughter of the late Harrison and Georgia Parsons Gillispie. In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by five sisters, two brothers and two sons-in-law. She was a member of Good Hope Baptist Church since 1932. She is survived by two daughters, Leona Wolford and Jean Wright, both of Milton; two sisters, Dollie Fisher of Hurricane and Edith Reynolds of Milton; one brother, Everett Gillispie of Hurricane; five grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Edythe Clara Helms Hale
Edythe Clara Helms Hale, 89, of Huntington passed away Feb. 14, 2003, in St. Mary’s Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Feb. 17, 2003, at Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville by the Rev. Forest Cummings. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. She was born Feb. 28, 1913, in Cabell County, a daughter of the late Willard and Sarah Ellen Cardwell Dolen. She was member of Mount Union United Methodist Church. She also was preceded in death by her first husband, Mac Helms; second husband, Rhynard Hale; three stepsons, Charles Hale, James Hale and Gary Hale; two sisters, Mabel Adkins and Ruby Blake; and four brothers, Richard Dolen, Basil Dolen, Harl Dolen and Jim Dolen. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Janet and George Jefferson of California; two sisters, Leola Bellomy of Huntington, with whom she made her home and who provided loving care for her, and Naomi Lear of Ohio; one brother and sister-in-law, the Rev. Joe and Kathleen Dolen of Barboursville; three stepdaughters, Pauline Christian, Helen Sullivan and Shelba Darst; two step-daughters-in-law, Pat Hale and Ruth Hale; one nephew who cared very much for her, Timothy Bellomy; two grandchildren, Jessica and Justin, whom she loved dearly; 16 step-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Robert Kelly Means
Robert Kelly Means, 76, of Barboursville passed away Friday, February 14, 2003. Memorial services were conducted Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003, at Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville. He was born Aug. 7, 1926, in Akron, Ohio, a son of the late Bernard and Viola Jane Nichols Means. He was veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps and served during World War II. He was a graduate of Marshall University, West Virginia University School of Law, member of the Cabell County Bar Association and West Virginia Bar Association. He served as Domestic Relations Judge during the illness of Judge Russell Daugherty, past chairman of Cabell County Republican Committee and past assistant prosecutor. He also was a member of the American Trial Lawyers Association, retired family lawmaster for Cabell County, a Kentucky Colonel, member of the American Legion #177, Barboursville, an avid horseman and member of the NRA. He is survived by his wife, Brenda Clay Means; one daughter, LuAnne Means of Huntington; one son and daughter-in-law Kevin and Shari Means of Hardy, Va.; two sisters, Suzanne Walston of Texas and Marliyn Grisham of Cherry Hill, N.J.; four grandchildren, Derek and Trevor Means of Barboursville, and Robert J. Means and his wife Dixie and Melissa J. Watts and her husband, Brad, all of Huntington; two great-grandchildren Robert J. “R.J.” Means and Brody Means, both of Huntington; one stepdaughter, Jennifer Nibert of Barboursville; and a special friend, David Kirby of Huntington. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements.

George Raymond Maynard
George Raymond Maynard, 49, of Barboursville, W.Va. passed away Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003. peacefully and unexpectedly in his home. He was an alumni of Marshall University and a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. He is survived by his mother, Joda Maynard of Huntington; brother, Keith Maynard and wife, Nancy of Ocala, Fla.; children, Candice Borges and husband, Jeff of Dallas, Texas, Brad and Marc Maynard of Huntington; and nephew, Aaron Maynard. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, February 16, 2003 at Trinity Episcopal Church. A celebration of his life followed at another location.

Oscar E. Cupp
Oscar E. Cupp, 84, of Milton went home to be with the Lord Friday, Feb. 14, 2003, at his residence. Funeral service were conducted Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, with the Rev. Winford Curry, the Rev. Chuck Elkins and the Rev. Harry Moore officiating. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. He was born Nov. 6, 1918, a son of the late Oakley E. and Willie Lusher Cupp. He also was preceded in death by two brothers, Tom Cupp and Roscoe “Smokey” Cupp, and two sisters, Myrtle “Sis” Rutherford and Leodia Slane. Mr. Cupp was retired from Owens-Illinois Glass Company in Huntington, a member and trustee of Zoar Baptist Church for 30 years and served God and country in the United States Navy in five campaigns during World War II. He is survived by his wife, Mary Morock Cupp of Milton; one daughter and son-in-law, Rhonda and T.W. Cowley of McKinney, Texas; four sisters, Mable Paice of Barboursville, Louise Jespersen of Vienna, W.Va., Tacie Locke of St. Mary’s, W.Va. and Laura Vittllie of Erie, Pa.; two brothers, John Cupp of Barboursville and Clyde Cupp of Brunswick, Ga.; three grandchildren, Dale, Steven and Justin Marksberry of McKinney, Texas; niece, Mary Sheppard of Riverview, Fla.; and many other nieces and nephews.

Jeremiah Brown
Jeremiah Brown, infant son of Jeremy and Kara Brown of Winfield, died February 5, 2003, in CAMC Women and Children’s Hospital.
Also surviving: sister, Karleigh Brown at home; maternal grandparents, Paul and Debi McCallister of Winfield; paternal grandparents, John and Debbie Brown of Winfield.
Private graveside service was held in Judson Baptist Church Cemetery, Winfield.

Evelyn V. Dooley
Evelyn Virginia Woods Dooley, 81, of Scott Depot died February 9, 2003, at home following a short illness.
She was a member of Washington Street Church of Christ, St. Albans. She was a former secretary for Royal Globe Insurance Company, Charleston, a member of Valley Friendship Club and Winfield Homemakers. She was a 4-H leader and a volunteer with Boy Scouts and Brownie troops. She was a 1939 graduate of St. Albans High School and a graduate of the Charleston School of Commerce. She was a 46-year resident of Scott Depot.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter Jackson and Nora Mae Henretty Woods, brothers, John Walter, William Lee and Charleston Alexander Woods and George Albert Gillespie, sister, Violet Elizabeth Stinson.
Surviving; husband of 59 years, Delbert D. Dooley; daughters and a son-in-law, Judy Ann and Lewis Moore of Scott Depot, and Janet Lee Dooley of Huntington; son and daughter-in-law, Danny Anderson and Connie Dooley of Sumerco; sister, Lula Belle Osborne of Winter Park, Florida; brothers, Joseph Albert Woods of Hyde Park, New York, Robert Jackson Woods of Myrtle Beach, James Franklin Woods of Elyria, Ohio, Jerry Elmer Woods of Red Hook, New York, and Frederick Alfred Woods of Wilmington, North Carolina; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
Service was held Wednesday, February 12, 2003, at Bartlett-Chapman Funeral Home, St. Albans, with Ministers Michael Mayo and Jerry Alderson officiating. Entombment was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.

Kenneth R. Cremeans II
Kenneth Ray Cremeans II, 17, of Leon, formerly of Pt. Pleasant, died February 10, 2003, in Leon following a sudden illness.
He was a student at Pt. Pleasant High School.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Ruth Deweese, and his paternal grandfather, Allen Ray Cremeans.
Surviving: mother, Brenda Tucker Byrd of Leon; father and stepmother, Kenneth Ray Sr. and Lisa Cremeans of Hurricane; maternal grandfather, Foster E. “Ed” Tucker of Grimms Landing; paternal grandmother and stepgrandfather, Rose and Frank Luikart of Buffalo; brothers, Johnny Barnette of Pt. Pleasant and Shawn Barnette of Leon; sisters, Lindsey Barnette of Pt. Pleasant, Megan Renee and Amanda Dawn Perry, both of Hurricane; three nieces, one nephew and several cousins.
Service was held Friday, February 14, 2003, at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with Pastor Carl “Mick” Bailes officiating. Burial was in Craig Cemetery, Grimms Landing.

Thelma Frazier
Thelma Dunn Frazier, 81, of Pliny died Wednesday, February 12, 2003, at her residence.
She was retired from Holzer Medical Center and Gallipolis Home Health, Gallipolis, Ohio. She was a member of Mount Union United Methodist Church, Pliny, and WSCS Woman Society. She was a lifelong resident of Pliny.
Surviving: daughters, Martha Martin of Bucyrus, Ohio, Hope Peal of Vienna, Virginia, Elizabeth Skolnick of Potomac, Maryland, and Tammy Henry of Newton Grove, North Carolina; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.
Service was held Saturday, February 15, 2003, at Mount Union United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bobby Wood and the Rev. Charles Roush officiating. Burial was in mount Union Cemetery. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.

Paul F. Keeling
Paul F. Keeling, 73, of Leon died Tuesday, February 11, 2003, at Putnam General Hospital following a sudden illness.
He was a retired welder for Allied Chemical, Nitro, with 26 years of service and a member of the Buffalo Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and Sunday school teacher.
Surviving: wife, Kathleen Smith Keeling; sons, Michael Keeling of Kenna, Fredrick Keeling of Bancroft, Douglas Keeling of Eleanor, and Timothy Keeling of Hurricane; daughters, Beverly Garrison of Buffalo and Shirley Legg of Scott Depot; sister, Betty Jividen of Nitro; brother, Bobby Keeling of St. Albans; seven grandchildren.
Service was held Saturday, February 15, 2003, at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with Pastor Tim Day officiating. Burial was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House.

Carlos J. Patton
Carlos J. Patton, 85, of Scott Depot, formerly of Nitro, died February 10, 2003, at his residence following a year-long battle with cancer.
He was born August 26, 2003 in Clendenin, a son of the late James Mathas and Lucibia Ethel Reed Patton.
He was a field supervisor for W.A. Abbott Construction Co. with 23 years of service and a member of Carpenter’s Local No. 128, St. Albans. He was an avid woodworker and a member of Valley Woodworkers Club. He was a 38-year resident of Scott Depot.
Surviving: his wife of 62 years, Hattie Faye Bowles Patton; son and daughter-in-law, James Toney and Johanna M. Patton of Summerville, South Carolina; daughter, Carolyn Jean Patton Stephens of Scott Depot; sister, Evelyn P. Hopper of Nitro; grandchildren and spouses, SSgt. Carlos Joe and Tonja Stephens of 29 Palms, California, Robert Toney and Lesa Patton of Charleston, South Carolina, Connie Lynn and Tom Carlin of Yonges Island, South Carolina; great-grandchildren, Joey and Chloe Stephens, Caitlen and Erica Patton, Thomas and Patrick Carlin.
Service was held Saturday, February 15, 2003, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with Dr. Martin Hallett of St. John United Methodist Church, Scott Depot, officiating. Burial was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.

Ray Taylor
Ray Taylor, 65, of Hurricane, formerly of South Charleston, died February 13, 2003, at CAMC Memorial Division, following a long illness.
He was owner of Taylor Rentals, Charleston, and Amber Manor Personal Care Home in Hurricane. He attended Pinch Baptist Church and was an avid hunter.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Virginia N. Taylor, sister, Beulah Moore, brothers, James and Ira Taylor; great-grandson, Xidis Devere.
Surviving: his wife of 44 years, Wanda Lee Taylor; daughters and sons-in-law, Connie and Fred Hudson of South Charleston, Jackie and Robert Simmons of Charleston; son and daughter-in-law, Timothy Ray and Sondra Taylor of St. Louis, Missouri; grandchildren, Chris Hudson, Robert Simmons III, Amy Devere and her husband, Adam, Jennifer Taylor, and Chasta Taylor.
Service was held Monday, February 17, 2003, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with Pastor John Smith officiating. Burial was in Taylor Cemetery, Dutch Ridge.
