“Babe” Lester Crump Stewart
“Babe” Lester Crump Stewart, 83, of Barboursville, went to be with the Lord Thursday, March 13, 2003. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 16, 2003, at Elmwood Baptist Church by Pastor Rick Glass. Burial in Highlawn Cemetery. He was born April 13,1919, in Huntington, a son of the late Claude Leo Stewart and Ethel Mae Wentz Stewart. He was also preceded in death by his wife Leona Gothard Stewart; one brother Foster Stewart; and one brother-in-law, Lyle Gothard. He was retired from C&O Railway and was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a member of Elmwood Baptist Church; the VFW Post 9738, and was an avid bowler.
He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Cecilia and Ronald Scarbro, of Athens, W.Va, and Patricia and Kim Harper of Danville, W Va; one brother, Claude “Finner” Stewart of Barboursville; six grandchildren, Jason and Michael Scarbro, both of Athens, Jill Scarbro and her fiance John McLaury of Denton, Texas, Kristina Setser and her husband Robert of Madison, WV, Stewart Harper of Williamson, and Kevin Harper of Danville, two great-granddaughters, Amelia Setser and Brooke Scarbro; three sisters-in-law, Lenora Linville and her husband John, Ellene Spurlock and her husband Frank, Mary Ann Gothard, and one brother-in-law, Lewis Gothard, all of Barboursville. Wallace Funeral Home, was in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Elmwood Baptist Church, 3045 Martha Road, Barboursville, WV, 25504.

Ethel N. Price Roach
Ethel N. Price Roach, 92, of Lesage, WV, died Thursday, March 13, 2003, at St Mary’s Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Reger Funeral Chapel by Rev. James Jefferson. Burial at Greenbottom Cemetery. She was a homemaker. She was born on September 11, 1910, in Wayne County, W.Va, the daughter of the late Millard and Margaret Merritt Price. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Roach. She is survived by her six sons, John, Carl, Mike, Millard and Odell Roach, all of Lesage, W.Va, and Wylie Roach of Oregon; seven daughters, Fanny Blake of Columbus, Ohio, Rodella Muth, Ruth Reger, Alta Scarberry and Roberta Collins, all of Huntington, Rosa Beever and Joyce Adkins, both of Lesage, W.Va., 33 grandchildren; 56 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren, one sister, Edna Nickels of Arizona; three stepbrothers, Narris Price and Ralph Price, both of Ohio, and Millard Price Jr. of Huntington; and three stepsisters, Norie Hargiss of Ohio, Mae Jeffers of Virginia and Melathine Hawes of Ohio. Reger Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Carol Peterman
Carol Peterman, 79, of Barboursville, W.Va., and originally from Elyria, Ohio, died March 12, 2003. She was born December 25, 1923, in Elyria, was a graduate of Elyria High School and was preceded in death by her husband, Pete. After raising her children Carol was employed by Data Terminal Systems of Florida, where she worked side by side with her husband. Carol’s retirement years were filled with the joys of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren as well as service to her community, including volunteer work for the Ronald McDonald House in Huntington. She will be greatly missed by her daughters and sons-in-law, Beverly and James Pauken of Ona, WV, Joan and Frank Baldwin of Charleston, W.Va., and Mary and Scott Lechner of Chesapeake, Va. Grandma “Pete” will also live on in the hearts of her grandchildren, Tracie and her husband, Steve Boellner, Geoff and his wife, Heather Hopkins, Nick, Ellie, Danielle, Samantha, Gabrielle; and great-grandchildren John, Katy, Lexie, Chase, Eric, Hannah, and Sarah. Services were held Saturday, March 15, 2003 at Brookdale Cemetery, Elyria, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ronald McDonald House, 1500 17th Street, Huntington, WV 25701 or the American Lung Association. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements.

Ethel Roach
Ethel Roach, 92, Lesage, widow of George Roach, died Thursday, March 13, 2003 in St. Mary’s Medical Center. She was a homemaker. Funeral services were held Saturday, March 15, 2003 at Reger Funeral Home, Huntington; burial in Greenbottom Cemetery.

James E. McCallister
James E. “Jim” McCallister, 56, of Hawthorne, died Thursday, March 6, 2003 at Shands at the University of Florida. He was born in Huntington, W.Va., to the late Willard and Hazel Eggleston McCallister and had been living here for the past 20 years coming from Huntington. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force having served in Vietnam. He was a retired industrial electrician and was a member of the I.B.E.W. in Wilmington, N.C. He was a former team captain with Relay for Life through the First Baptist Church of Interlachen. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and baseball. He was a member of the former Mopar Auto Club in Gainesville and enjoyed competing in auto shows.
Surviving are his wife of 36 years, Brenda R. McCallister Hawthorne; a son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey D. and Shari McCallister, Gainesville; a daughter, Tammy R. McCallister, Nevada, Mo.; brothers and a sister-in-law, Wilbur W. and Jackie McCallister, Williston and Robert L. McCallister, Huntington, W.Va.; sisters and brother-in-law, Helen Price, Chillicothe, Ohio and Mary Ann and Robert L. Layne, Washington, W.Va.; and a granddaughter, MacKenzie McCallister, Gainesville.
Memorial services were held Tuesday, March 11 at the First Baptist Church of Interlachen with Dr. James Roberson officiating. In honor and in tribute of Mr. McCallister’s Life a video tribute was shown during the service. Military honors were bestowed by the U.S. Air Force. Masters Funeral Home of Interlachen was in charge of arrangements.

Juanita Porter
Juanita Porter, 68, of Branchland passed away Monday, March 10, 2003, at Cabell Huntington Hospital. Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, March 14, 2003, at the Bethlehem United Baptist Church by the Rev. Ray Vance and the Rev. AJ. Perry. Burial in Marion Adkins Cemetery. She was born July 4,1934, in Lincoln County, a daughter of the late Walter and Maudie Adkins. She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Dreama Lou Vance and three brothers, Arthur, Arnold and Orville Adkins. She is survived by her husband, Lilbert R. Porter, one granddaughter, Aubrey Diana Watts of Branchland; one brother, Herbert Adkins and his wife, Zeda of Branchland; and sisters-in-law, Louise Adkins of Huntington, Melva Adkins of Kentucky and Iva Adkins of Barboursville. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements.

Lowell Stamper
Lowell Stamper, 52, of Lesage died Monday, March 10, 2003, in St Mary’s Medical Center. He is survived by two children Lonnie Stamper of Houston and Andrea Lawhon of Okinawa; and two brothers, Chris Stamper and David Stamper, both of Huntington. Funeral services were conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Henson Mortuary, Barboursville; burial in Stamper Cemetery in Wayne County.

Joan B. Young
Our loving and devoted mother, JOAN B. YOUNG, 71, of Barboursville, slipped peacefully away from us and into the ever-waiting arms of her Lord, March 9, 2003. She was born Nov. 15, 1931, in Bellingham, Wash., the only child of the late Melvin and Eunice Jacobs Hall. She served in the United States Air Force, after which she settled, raised her family and made her life here in West Virginia. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Steve Mynes of Lakewood, N.Y.; a daughter, Debra Young of Barboursville; two sons, William Young III and David Young, both of Huntington, W.Va.; and Anita Asbury of Barboursville, whom she loved as much as her own. A memorial service was held Wednesday, March 12, 2003, at First United Methodist Church, Barboursville, where she was a member. The Rev. Monty Brown officiated. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of Huntington and the Animal Control Shelter of Huntington. She was a gentle and giving woman and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements.

Patricia Gall Adkins
Patricia Gail Adkins, 31, of Barboursville, passed away Sunday, March 9, 2003, at St. Mary’s Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, March 12, 2003, at Crook Chapel by the Rev. Eugene Houck. Burial in Bowen Cemetery. She was born April 8, 1971, in Cabell County, a daughter of Willis Adkins of Branchland and Mae Clark Adkins of Barboursville. She was a member of Crook Chapel. She is survived by her husband, Tom Loughry; two daughters, Brittany Ross and Racheal Loughry at home; one son, Shane Loughry at home; two sisters, Teresa Keeney of Kenova, W.Va, and her children Jennifer Keeney, Amanda Keeney and Latricia Keeney, and Charlotte Triplett of Branchland and her children Justin Triplett, D. Ray Triplett and Amber Howard, and her grandson, Joseph Howard. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements.

Rebecca Jane Ash
Rebecca Jane Ash, 65, of Barboursville, W.Va., went home to be with the Lord Saturday, March 8, 2003, at Cabell Huntington Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, March 12, 2003, at Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by the Rev. Carlos Gibson. Burial in Baylous Cemetery. She was born June 16, 1937, in Charleston, W.Va., a daughter of the late Rev. Ira Lovejoy and Ethel Jones Lovejoy. She was also preceded in death by three sons, Steve, Dennis and Dallas Ash. She was co-owner of PoBoys Tires. She is survived by her husband, Harrison Ash Jr.; three daughters, Cynthia Mays and her husband Teddy of Branchland, Yvonne Ash of Branchland and Joy Ash of Milton; one son, Mark Ash and his wife Juanita of Branchland; 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Rachel H. Wiedeman, M.D.
Rachel H. Wiedeman, M.D., 91, of Scott Depot, formerly of New York City, died March 4, 2003, at her residence.
She was born May 5, 1911 in Riga, Latvia.
She attended and graduated from Prague Medical School, Prague, Czechoslovakia, where she met her husband, George Henkins Wiedeman, M.D., who preceded her in death. Her practice and interest was always children’s health and protection. They immigrated to the United States after Hitler invaded Europe. They lived in California and Northeastern states but settled in New York City, where she lived for 50 years. She moved to West Virginia to be with her family.
Surviving: son, Michael Henkins Wiedeman, daughter-in-law, Melanie Walters Wiedeman; granddaughter, Amanda Wiedeman.
A private memorial service was held. She was entombed in Ferncliff Cemetery, Hartsdale, New York. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Teays Valley Volunteer Fire Department, PO Box 57. Scott Depot WV 25560, for the implementation of ALS responder service.

Vera M. Shiller
Vera M. Shiller, 88, of Scott Depot died March 3, 2003.
Service was held Thursday, March 6, 2003, at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville. Burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

Terry N. Smith II
Terry N. “Ty” Smith II of Hurricane died March 6, 2003, at St. Mary’s Hospital after a brief illness.
He was a member of the Laborers Union International Local 1353.
Surviving: son, Jared Tyler; parents, Anna Belle and Terry; brothers, Greg and Todd; grandmother, Hallie Lockard.
A memorial service was held Monday, March 10, 2003, at Allen Funeral home, Hurricane.

Ina Gaye Erwin
Ina Gaye Erwin, 93, of Hurricane died at home after a long illness.
She was a granduate of Marshall University and a teacher with 42 years of service in Putnam County schools, a member of Hurricane First Baptist Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher for many years, and a member of the Retired Teachers Association.
Surviving: nieces, Patricia Drake of Hurricane, Lucy Davis of Georgetown, Texas, and Janet Miller of Huntingtown, Maryland; nephews, Robert Faulkner of Grayson, Kentucky and Wayne F. Erwin of Hilliard, Ohio.
Service was held Tuesday, March 11, 2003, at Hurricane First Baptist Church with the Rev. Jim McGehee and Dr. Charles Hendricks officiating. Burial was in Hodges Cemetery near Hurricane. Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, was in charge of arrangements.
Memorial donations may be made to Hurricane First Baptist Church Memorial Fund.

Myrtle B. West
Myrtle B. West of Hometown died March 6, 2003.
Service was held Saturday, March 8, 2003, at Center Point Cemetery, Liberty. Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements.

Jose A. Fernandez
Jose A. “Chippy” Fernandez, 70, of Red House died Thursday, March 6, 2003, at Putnam General Hospital following a long illness.
He was a graduate of Key West High School in 1950, joined the U.S. Navy upon graduation, serving 7 1/2 years before receiving a medical discharge. He retired from NASA at Edwards AFB, having worked on the space shuttle program.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father, one sister and two brothers.
Surviving: wife, Jacquiline Wright Fernandez; daughter, Donna Strohl of Sebring, Florida; brother, Oliverio Fernandez of Key West, Florida; two granddaughters, three great-grandsons.
Service was held Saturday, March 8, 2003, at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with the Rev. Wayne Burch officiating. Burial was in the Wright Cemetery, Buffalo.

Thomas M. Milam
Thomas Mandeville Milam, 78, of Buffalo died March 5, 2003 at home of a sudden heart attack.
He was a Christian and was born in Kanawha County, the son of William Harrison Milam and Ruby Barker Milam Franklin. He grew up in the Cross Lanes area and attended Dunbar High School. He served in World War Ii as a corporal in the Army Air Force. He flew many months of combat in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater from 1944 to 1946. He was awarded a ribbon with two Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal. He was a retiree of Union Carbide in South Charleston.
Surviving: his wife of 54 years, Helena Bailey Milam; daughter, Barbara Milam Jividen and her husband, Ed, of Midway; nephew, Edward Milam and wife, Pam, of Cross Lanes; great-nephew and niece, Nathan Milam and Kiley Milam Lanham and husband, Richie; great-great-nephew, Zane Lanham of Cross Lanes.
Service was held Saturday, March 8, 2003, at Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel, Red House, with Pastor Michael Hanna officiating. Entombment followed the service in the mausoleum. Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements.
Memorial donations may be made to Kanawha Hospice Care, 1143 Dunbar Avenue, Dunbar WV 25064.

Woodrow W. Woody
Woodrow W. Woody, 84, born July 20,1918, and known to his friends as “Woody” went home to be with the Lord March 6, 2003. He was one of nine children - five boys and four girls born to the late George and Edith Moses Woody, who raised their children on a farm located in Bear Hollow, Mason County, W.Va. He married Kathleen Blake in 1938 and became the father of two children, Larry and Sally. After Kathleen’s death in 1942, he enlisted with the U.S. Army, served during World War II in Germany, where he was wounded and for which he was awarded the Purple Heart.
In 1946, he married Katherine Ing of Long Island, N.Y., and fathered three more children Warren, Bonnie and Kathy. He built a house for his family in East Pea Ridge, which remained his home for the rest of his life. In 1967, after 34 years of employment with the International Nickel Co., he retired to pursue his lifelong hobbies of woodworking, beekeeping, gardening and playing the guitar, banjo and fiddle. He built eight houses in the area and was always willing to help friends with home improvement projects.
He was a faithful member of Fellowship Baptist Church. Ted, as many family members called him, was also preceded in death by three brothers, Henry, Garland and Charlie; and three sisters, Glenna Woody, Wilma Holley and Irene Brumfield. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Katherine Woody, sister, Winnie Cremeans of Scott Depot W.Va.; a brother and sister-in-law, George and Pat Woody of Duluth, Minn.; two sisters-in-law, Virginia Woody of Huntington and Anna Woody of Milton, WVa.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Jackie Woody and Warren and Susan Woody, all of Huntington; three daughters and one son-in-law, Sally Holley of Huntington, Bonnie Romes of Columbus, Ohio, and Kathy and Bruce Ferris of Tallahassee, Fla.; one granddaughter; five grandsons; and three great-grandchildren. The family extends a very sincere thank-you to the staff of Hospice, who ministered to him in his final months. The family will also always remember the loving care he received from Dr. Matthew Harris and Dr. David Nichols and the nursing staff at St. Mary’s Medical Center. Donations may be made to Hospice of Huntington. Funeral was held Monday, March 10th, at Henson Mortuary, with Dr. Jerry Warren officiating; entombment in Woodmere Abbey of Remembrance.

Fritz Sherman Lowe
Fritz Sherman Lowe, 55, of Huntington, WV, passed away Wednesday, March 5, 2003 at his residence. He was born March 4, 1948 in Bayreuth, Germany a son of Bernie and Emilie Muller Lowe of Huntington. He formerly was an employee at St. Mary’s Hospital. Private funeral services were conducted at Chapman’s Mortuary, Huntington, with his uncle, Rev. John Lowe officiating. Burial was in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville.
