Betty J. McFann Earwood Barbour, 71, of Huntington rested this life Tuesday, March 4, 2003, at her residence. Funeral services were conducted Friday, March 7, 2003, at Apostolic Life Cathedral by the Rev. Edwin Harper and Dr. David Lemming. Burial in Greenbottom Cemetery. She was born November 27, 1931, in Cabell County, a daughter of the late Don and Inez Ryder McFann. She was a graduate of Marshall University with masters’ degree in education. She was a retired teacher at Milton and Hite Saunders Elementary. She attended Lewis Memorial Baptist Church, served as sanctuary organist, member of Apostolic Life Cathedral. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Theresa and Patrick R. Messer of Huntington; a very special sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Shirley and Marshall Reynolds of Huntington; a brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Leona McFann of Lesage; great aunt, Yvonne Hogsett and many other Earwood family members; one grandson, Chance R. Messer of Huntington. The family requests that donations be made to WV Chapter of Myasthenia Gravis, PO Box 887, Cool Ridge, WV 25825. Henson Mortuary was in charge of arrangements. Dorcas C. Kromer
Dorcas C. Kromer, 82, of Huntington, WV, formerly of Washington, D.C., widow of Allbert M. Kromer, passed away Monday, March 3, 2003, in St. Mary’s Medical Center after a long illness. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, March 8, 2003, at Barboursville First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Monty Brown and the Rev. Dick Hepler officiating. Burial in Ridgelawn Memorial Park. She was born September 20, 1920, in Huntington, a daughter of the late George Franklin and Oddie Holland Clark. Also preceding her in death were five sisters and four brothers. She was a retired registered nurse for the federal government, a member of Barboursville First United Methodist Church, and the Business and Professional Women’s Club of Washington, DC. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Michael A. and Trina S. Kromer of Independence, WV; two step-daughters, Jolene Lawson of North Carolina and Sharon Napier of Ohio; one sister, Norma Adkins of Huntington; one brother, George D. Clark of Huntington; two grandsons, Thomas M. Kromer and John D. Kromer, both of Independence, WV; a special friend, Frances Chaconas of Suitland, Md; and numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends. Chapman’s Mortuary, Huntington, was in charge of arrangements.

Roma Junior McCallister
Roma Junior McCallister, 74, of Culloden, passed away Tuesday, March 4, 2003, in St. Mary’s Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Friday, March 7, 2003 at Heck Funeral Home, Milton. Burial in Culloden Cemetery. He was born October 12, 1928 in Slagle, WV, a son of the late Roma Lee and Valora Keaton McCallister. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of Sousanah Freewill Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Julia Fletcher McCallister; two sons, Stephen Lee McCallister of Fort Wayne, IN, and David Wayne McCallister of Beaver Dam, KY; one daughter, Debra Lynn Datin of Tampa, FL; and one sister, Sally May Sowards of Culloden, WV; seven grandchildren; one great granddaughter.

Funeral services were conducted Friday, March 7, 2003 at the Apostolic Life Cathedral, Huntington; burial in Greenbottom Cemetery. Henson Mortuary, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements.

Marshall Flora
Marshall Flora, 55, of Milton, father of Allen and Kevin Flora, died Sunday, March 2, 2003 at home. Graveside service was held on Thursday, March 6, 2003 at White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.

Mary Evelyn Jenkins
Mary Evelyn Jenkins, 78, of Milton, passed into Heaven on Monday, March 3, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, March 6, 2003, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton with the Rev. Chelcie Gibson officiating. Burial in Jenkins Cemetery, Milton. She was born January 18, 1925 in Milton, W.Va. a daughter of the late Emmit and Mary Dailey. She also was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Leroy Jenkins; one brother, Basil Dailey; three sisters, Thelma, Elsie and Maxine. She is survived by two sons, Michael Jenkins and wife, Connie of South Point, Ohio, Thomas Jenkins of Milton; one daughter, Judy Shull and husband, Steve of Milton; six grandchildren, Kelly Shull and wife, Kala, Chad Shull and wife Anna, Darwin Jenkins and wife, Mitzi, Jill Holton and husband, Jamie, Danessa Jenkins, all of Milton, and Rusty McCoy of North Carolina; three great-grandchildren, Kasha and Kyla Shull of Milton and Alexxis of North Carolina; one brother, Donald Dailey of South Carolina; one sister, Helen Meadows of Milton. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.

George Warren Hartman
George Warren Hartman, 79, of Huntington passed away Sunday, March 2, 2003, in St. Mary’s Medical Center. He was born April 23, 1923, in Greensboro, N.C., son of the late A.T. and Alma E. Gaines. He was an executive at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Ogden Hartman; son and daughter-in-law Richard and Lynn Hartman of South Carolina; daughter Georgeann Ruby of Huntington; and granddaughter Beth Ruby of Charleston, S.C. There were no services. Henson Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Kenneth F. Phipps
Kenneth F. Phipps, 66, of Huntington, died Feb. 22, 2003. He was owner/operator of Phipps Barber Shop in Altizer and a former driver for several local soft drink companies. Survivors include daughters, Cynthia Hayes and Sabrina Layman; sister Larita Dye; brother David Phipps; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and former spouse Sara Phipps. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, March 6, 2003 at Lewis Memorial Baptist Church, West Pea Ridge. Burial in Ridgelawn Memorial Park Huntington.

Clarence E. Sisson
Clarence E. “Bud” Sisson, 85, of Scott Depot died February 22, 2003, in Thomas Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
He was born October 5, 1917 in Pliny, a son of the late Arthur and Gladys Waugh Sisson. He was also preceded in death by sisters, Opal Legg and Inez Hinkle, and brothers, Dale, Gene and Lee Sisson.
He attended Winfield United Methodist Church and Teays Valley Missionary Baptist Church.
He was an Army veteran of World War II where he served in the Third Army under General George S. Patton in France and took part in the invasion of France where he was wounded during that battle.
He was employed by FMC for 34 years, retiring in 1977. He was a former member of the Winfield Lions Club and was a 33-year resident of Teays Valley.
Surviving: wife, Vada F. Gibson Sisson; son, Robert L. Hinkle of Winfield; niece and nephew, Beverly Ann and John Leslie of Hurricane; brother, Elwood Sisson of Columbus, Ohio; sister, Charlotte Richardson of Illinois; many loved nieces and nephews.
Service was held Wednesday, February 26, 2003, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Kregg Burris officiating. Burial was in Winfield Cemetery.

Clarence Collins
Clarence Collins, 90, of Hurricane died February 24, 2003, in Putnam General Hospital.
He attended Hurricane Bible Church and was an Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War.
Surviving: his wife of 68 years, Alberta; sister, Catherine Cornell; caregivers, Alice McCoy and Connie Moore; several nieces and nephews.
Graveside service was held Wednesday, February 26, 2003, at Powell Cemetery, Hamlin, with Pastor Art Hage officiating. Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, was in charge of arrangements.

Nancy L. King
Mrs. Nancy L. King, 61, of Poca died February 27, 3002, in Putnam General Hospital.
Surviving: husband, Roy King; children, Rhonda Cooper of Charleston, Michael Karnes of Poca, Daniel Karnes of Reedy and Kenneth Karnes of Poca; sister, Emma Cooper of Red House; brother, Irvin Sargent of Parkersburg; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
Service was held Sunday, March 2, 2003, at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with the Rev. Willard Beller and the Rev. Randy Carter officiating. Entombment was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House.

Ethel L. Farren
Ethel Louise Tucker Farren, 91, of Buffalo died Tuesday, February 25, 2003, in Jackson, Ohio.
A former resident of Nitro, Robertsburg and Buffalo, she was born July 12, 1911 in Putnam County.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Hiram and Lizzie Davis Tucker, husband, the Rev. Thomas P. Farren, brothers, Tallie, Oscar, Willon and Denford Tucker, sisters, Mamie Deweese, Goldie Bailes, Maxine Badgley and Elloise Rollins.
Surviving: sister, Rhoda Grimes of Buffalo; brother, Everett Tucker of Buffalo; and a host of nephews, nieces and friends.
Service was held Sunday, March 2, 2003, at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with the Rev. Wayne Burch and the Rev. James Kessick officiating. Burial was in Buffalo Memorial Park.

Leah Irene Nichols
Leah Irene Nichols, 79, of Hurricane died February 26, 2003, in Putnam General Hospital following a short illness.
She was a member of the Eastern Star.
Surviving: husband, William Earl Nichols; daughter, Barbara Chaney of Hurricane; sisters, Rosalee Breedlove and Cindy Faulkner of Culloden; brothers, Mark Smith of Yelm, Washington and Bob Smith of Jackson, South Carolina; two grandchildren, Gregory Chaney, M.D. of Huntington and Kimberly Chaney of Hurricane; two great-grandchildren, Jordan and Colby of Ona; stepgreat-grandchild, Nichole Bishop.
Service was held Saturday, March 1, 2003, at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, with Pastor Bill Davis officiating. Burial was in Forest Memorial Park, Milton.

Norman William Scanlon
Norman William Scanlon, 95, of Barboursville, formerly of Pittsburgh, Pa., passed away Friday, Feb. 28, 2003. Norman was born Jan. 28, 1908, in Pittsburgh, a son of the late Thomas and Mary Knoebel Scanlon. He was a member of St. Stephen’s Church, Milton, W.Va., and was formerly a member of Nativity of Our Lord Parish, Pittsburgh. He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Merle Dailey Scanlon; two sisters, Elizabeth Stetar and Dorothy Esterbrook; and eight brothers, Frank, Leo, Larry, Pius, Thomas, Cyril and Raymond Scanlon. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ann and William Schaefer; his son and daughter-in-law, Norman and Karen Scanlon; one sister, Marie Colle; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; nine step-great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. Funeral services were conducted by Heard Funeral Home, Inc., 4047 Perrysville Ave., Pittsburgh. Mass of Christian Burial was conducted Thursday, March 6, 2003 at the Incarnation of the Lord (formerly Nativity) Church, with entombment in Christ Our Redeemer North Side Catholic Cemetery.

Charles V. Probert
Charles V. Probert, 65, of Barboursville, formerly of Morgantown, W.Va., and Grand Rapids, Mich., died Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2003. Pastor Jeff Wick conducted memorial services on Tuesday, March 4, 2003, at Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville. He was born Jan. 6, 1938, in Sioux City, Iowa, a son of the late John and Ollie Sloan Probert. He was a former municipal judge, an employee of the Veterans Regional Office and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He is survived by two daughters, Sharron Probert Grannis and her husband, Shaun, of Indianapolis and Lorraine Probert of Martinsburg, W.Va.; one brother, John Probert of Panacea, Fla.; and one grandson, Issac Daniel Grannis of Indianapolis. Memorial contributions may be made to the West Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind, 301 E. Main St., Romney, WV 26757.

Albert W. “Billy” Townson
Albert W. “Billy Townson, 70, of Huntington, went to be with the Lord Thursday, February 27, 2003, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, March 2, 2003 at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel. Burial in Baylous Cemetery. He was born May 4, 1932, in Cabell County, a son of the late Luther H. and Thelma Gullett Townson. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He was preceded in death by one brother, Ronnie Townson, and four nieces, Lina Sue McGuffin Taylor, Tabitha R. Townson, Teresa L. Townson and Amyee R. Townson. He is survived by three sons, Michael Eugene Townson, Jeffrey Niel Townson and Billy Joe Townson, all of Huntington; two sisters, Tina Wheeler, with whom he made his home, and Shirley Mordell of Rush, Ky.; two brothers, Robert H. Townson and Terry E. Townson, both of Huntington; several grandchildren and a host of loving nieces and nephews.

Madgie Lee Herbert
Madgie Lee Herbert, 79, of Milton went to be with the Lord Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003, at Teays Valley Center. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, March 4, 2003, at Wallace Funeral Home, Milton by Pastors Stan Maynard, David Ashworth and Edwin Harper. Burial in Forest Memorial Park. She was born April 14, 1923, in Smithers, W.Va., a daughter of the late Homer and Maggie Cuthbertson Cox. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph J. Herbert; one sister, Cleo Kidd; and two brothers, Walter Cox and Homer Cox. She was a charter member of the Church In The Valley. She is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Sandee Norris of Milton and Nancy and Henry Arnold of Humble, Texas; one sister and brother-in-law, Floreine and Arthur Stern of St. Albans, W.Va.; one brother and sister-in-law, Lennie and Charlotte Cox of Charleston WV; six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and special friends, Hester Cunningham and Jeff Black. Memorial contributions may be made to the Church In The Valley or the Apostolic Life Cathedral.

Harlan Ray Mays
Harlan Ray Mays, 64, of Huntington passed away Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2003, at home. Funeral services were conducted Monday, March 3, 2003, at Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel Barboursville, by the Rev. Ray Vance. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. He was born Sept. 28, 1938, a son of the late Hazel Lee and Alice Marie Steele Mays. He is survived by his wife, Velma Ann Christman Mays; one daughter, Joni Lynn Mays of Ashland; two sons, James Raymond Mays of Ona, W.Va. and Jamie Eugene Mays of Huntington; one brother, Christopher Lee Mays of Columbus, Ohio; and five grandchildren.
