Mrs. Cora Belle Warren, age 72, died at Wellmont Hospice, Bristol, TN on Thursday, April 1, 2005. She was a lifelong resident of Washington County, VA and of the Baptist faith. She worked as a seamstress for 17 years at Harwood Company. She was preceded in death by her son, Phillip Warren, her mother, Annie Elizabeth Bott, and her brothers and sisters.
She is survived by: two sons, Darrell Warren and wife Christina of Abingdon, VA and Randall ‘Randy’ Warren of Greenville, SC; two daughters, Janet Torbett and husband John of Meadowview, VA and Anita Lewis and husband Tony of Damascus, VA; brothers Calvin Caudill of Abingdon, VA and William Frankie ‘Tank’ Caudill of Front Royal, VA; sisters Vivian Bellamy of Meadowview, VA and Belva Riddle of Abingdon, VA.; nine grandchildren, Amanda Mullins, Jennifer Krauser, Andrea Krauser, Jason Guerra, Phillip Torbett, J.J. Torbett, Torrey Torbett, Alexis Castillo and Jessica Guerra; five step-great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and a lot of friends.
The funeral service will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. – Saturday, April 2, 2005 in the main street chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Paul Price officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until time of service. A graveside committal service will be held at 2:00 p.m. – Sunday, April 3, 2005 at Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Those attending are asked to assemble at the cemetery by 1:50 p.m.
Pallbearers will be grandsons Phillip Torbett and Jason Guerra, granddaughters Jennifer Krauser and Andrea Krauser, nephew Homer Quesenberry, and friend Paul Scyphers. Honorary pallbearer will be Dr. Emory Robinette.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Lung Association, P.O. Box 1249, Abingdon, VA 24212.

Helen Chapman Counts
Mrs. Helen Chapman Counts, 90, died Saturday, April 2, 2005, in the Johnston Memorial Hospital. She was born January 20, 1915 to Lee and Lelia Akers Chapman. Mrs. Counts was a lifelong resident of Washington County, Virginia having lived in the Hayter’s Gap Community before moving to Abingdon in 1978. She was a member of the Church of Christ. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, B. L. Counts and a brother, Lawrence C. Chapman. Survivors include
Her daughter, Shirley C. Snowden and her husband, Ronald of Abingdon, Va.
A granddaughter, Dr. Elizabeth (Beth) Snowden Glisson and her husband, Charles of Birmingham, Ala.
Two great granddaughters, Helen Elizabeth Glisson and Anwhitney Snowden Glisson of Birmingham, Ala.
A niece, Barbra C. Weddle of Roanoke, Va.
A funeral service will be conducted Tuesday, April 5, 2005, at 11:00 AM in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Mr. Bill Haywood officiating. Burial will follow in the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum at Forest Hills Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 – 9 PM Monday at the funeral home or anytime at the home of Shirley and Ron Snowden. Pallbearers will be family and friends. The family would like to express their gratitude and thank you to the staff of West Haven Retirement Living, Dr. Adam Steinberg, the nursing staff on third floor at Johnston Memorial Hospital and Hospice of Southwest Virginia for the support they gave to us and our mother. Howard Curtis Salyer
HOWARD CURTIS SALYER, 72, of Abingdon, passed away Saturday, April 2, 2005. He was originally from West Virginia and was a longtime member of the Smythe County Moose Lodge. Survivors include his daughter, Donna Brown of California; one brother, Leon Salyer of Abingdon; two sisters, Violet Simmons and Thelma Elderlen both of California; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and special friends, Jake, Ronnie, Wanda, Raymond, Stewart, Karen, Rusty, and Andy. Interment will be private.

Johnny Daniel Graham
Johnny Daniel Graham, age 59, went to be with his Lord, Thursday, April 7, 2005.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jean Graham, his father, Douglas Graham, his mother, Hester Graham, his brother, Jerry Graham.
He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Debby and Scooter Rutter, Bristol, VA, Janie and Barry King, Damascus, VA, Melissa and David Bowman, Bristol, TN, his brothers and sisters-in-law, Joe and Kay Graham and Jimmy and Coleen Graham both of Glade Spring, VA, a sister-in-law, Karen Graham, Atkins, VA., special nephew and his wife, Eddie and K Stout, Bristol, VA, his grandchildren, Tara Duff, Amber Stout, Curtis King, Kerri King, Autum Bowman, great grandchildren, Nicholas Duff and Madison Duff, several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be conducted Saturday, April 9, 2005 at 2:00 P.M. in the Farris Funeral Service, Main Street Chapel with Rev. James Phillips officiating.. Interment will follow in the New Lutheran Cemetery on Rhea Valley Road.
Pallbearers will be Jerry Graham, Willie Richardson, Frankie Phillips, Bobby Harris, Scott Thurston, Jeff Stout.
Honorary pallbearers will be Hunter Parris, Bill Tignor, Robert Graham.
A very special thank you to Dr. Baker, Joann Viers, Hospice of Washington County and his very special nurse, Diane Wise for their love and care for our father.

Banie Ofelia Smith
Banie Ofelia Smith passed away Friday, April 8, 2005 in Bristol, TN at the age of 81.
Mrs. Smith was born October 19, 1923 in Whitetop, VA. After high school, she moved to Baltimore, MD where she met and later married Robert W. Smith. Mrs. Smith and her husband moved to North Carolina, and later to California where they owned and managed a motel and restaurant for many years. After retirement, Mr. and Mrs. Smith resided in North Carolina, Arizona and Virginia.
Mrs. Smith enjoyed being a homemaker after retirement. She also liked to travel and visited many locations in the United States, Mexico, Bahamas Islands and Europe. Throughout the years, Mrs. Smith was active in the Baptist Church.
Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by two brothers, Warren and William Coldiron and a son, Harvey Smith.
She is survived by her husband, Robert W. Smith, Bristol, VA, One sister, Eleanor Tate, Bristol, VA, a brother, Bob Coldiron of Michigan and many nieces and nephews, one grandson, Harvey Smith, Jr., and two great grandchildren, Sean and Nicole Smith all of Las Vegas, Nevada.
The funeral service will be conducted Sunday, April 10, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. in the Farris Funeral Service, Main Street Chapel. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 6-8 p.m. in the funeral home.

Mildred 'Polly' Arrington
Mrs. Mildred Pauline “Polly” Arrington passed away Friday, April 8, 2005 at her residence.
Survivors include her husband, Duard W. Arrington, Abingdon, VA; her daughters, Mrs. Penny Arrington Hite and husband, Walter, Abingdon, VA, and Mrs. Nan Arrington Harman and husband, Michael, Alamogorda, New Mexico; her sisters, Mrs. Bertha Elliott, Roswell, Georgia, Mrs. Louise Clements, Statesville, NC, and Mrs. Ida Jean Bowers, Dallas, TX; hergrandson, Andrew Arrington White, Los Angeles, CA.
The graveside service will be conducted Monday, April 11, 2005 at 2:30 p.m. in Knollkreg Memorial Park.
Honorary pallbearers will Don McCall, Charles Clements, Doug Cornett, Pride Arrington, Tim Greer, Gizmo Bordwine, Tim Pearce.
Friends attending the service on Monday are requested to assemble at Knollkreg Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 6-8 p.m. in the funeral home.

Robert Herman Hubble
ROBERT HERMAN HUBBLE, 83, died April 10, 2005 at his home in Abingdon. Mr. Hubble was born in Smyth County on March 19, 1922. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Ransom Hubble and Sue Young Hubble; a sister, Dorothy Ruth Houck; and a brother Donald Young Hubble. He moved to Abingdon ten years ago, after 34 years of service with the Baltimore division of Martin-Marietta. He was a member of First Christian Church of Abingdon.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Evelyn Harmon Tilson Hubble of Abingdon; two sons, Robert Harmon Hubble (Joey) of Ceres, VA, and James Michael Hubble (Adrienne) of Mertztown, PA; one daughter, Rozanne Hubble Counts (James) of Abingdon; a sister, Nora Mae Wygal of Roanoke; four grandsons, Robert Thomas Hubble (Heather), Gerald Andrew Counts, Carl Matthew Counts, and Michael Harmon Hubble; one granddaughter, Melissa Renee Hubble; four great grandchildren, Robert Alexander Hubble, Candace June Hubble, Dillon Patrick Hubble, and Trevor Jacob Hubble; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 11:00am to 12:30pm. Tuesday, April 12, 2005 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 427 East Main Street, Abingdon, VA. Funeral services will begin at 12:30pm, with Howard Taylor and Paul Young officiating. Family and friends will meet at Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery in Nebo, VA at 2:30 pm for the committal service.
Pallbearers will be grandsons Gerald Counts and Carl Counts, and nephews Jeffrey Cassell, Ronnie Houck, Edd Houck, and Don Woods.

Roger Leo Mellas
Roger Leo Mellas, age 60, died Sunday, April 10, 2005 at the Johnston Memorial Hospital. Roger was a U. S. Army veteran serving in Vietnam. He enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and will always be a hero in our hearts. He is survived by:

A military graveside service will be held Wednesday, April 13, 2005 at 1:00 PM in the Veterans Affairs National Cemetery in Johnson City, Tennessee.

Curtis Jack McCroskey
Mr. Curtis Jack McCroskey, age 71, passed away on Friday, April 15, 2005 after a lengthy illness.
Born on February 16, 1934, Jack was a lifelong resident of Washington County and was a son of the late Ralph McCroskey and Lola Fleenor McCroskey. He was also preceeded in death by a nephew, Jimmy McCroskey and dear friend and neighbor Roscoe Worley. Jack was a farmer and a longtime member of Valley View Baptist Church where he was currently serving as deacon. He was a U. S. Navy Veteran and had served on the ship U. S. Papgo as well as serving at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba and various other ports at sea.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley McCroskey; a daughter, Thea Jo Green and husband John of Bristol, V and two grandsons, Adam Green And Ethan Green all of Bristol, VA; three brothers, Fred McCroskey and wife Patsy, James McCroskey and wife Rose and Spurgeon McCroskey and wife Pat all of Abingdon, VA; very special friends, Larry Mumpower of Abingdon and Bobby Hutton of Bristol, VA and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M., Sunday, April 17, 2005 in the Valley View Baptist Church with Rev. Kenneth Widner and Rev. Roy Yelton officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Military graveside rites will be provided by the Highlands Fellowship Honor Color Guard.
Casket bearers will be Dan Gregory, Larry Mumpower, Bob Hutton, Jack Worley, Bill Holbrook, Paul Countiss, Dave Fleenor and Wayne McCroskey. Honorary Casket bearers will be nephews, friends and the men and deacons of Valley View Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. Saturday at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 427 E. Main Street, Abingdon.

Patsy Clara Powers
Mrs. Patsy Clara Powers, age 64, went to be with the Lord, Friday, April 15, 2005, in the Johnston Memorial Hospital after a courageous battle. She was born August 10, 1940 in Washington County, Virginia where she had lived her entire life. She was the daughter of the late Clarence Roscoe and Annie Gertrude Harless Barrett. Patsy had worked at the William King Grade School, Johnston Memorial Hospital, Cedar Lawn Nursing Home, Abingdon Manor and the Martha Washington Inn. She also volunteered at the Second Harvest Food Bank and was a life long member of the Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Chester (Bruce) Powers; four children, David Powers, Mark Powers, Mary Ellen Powers and Billy Powers; five brothers and sisters, Fannie Marie Stevens, Carolyn Ann Davis, John Franklin Barrett and twins, Carl and Carlene Barrett. Patsy was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend.
She is survived by: Her son, Timothy Bruce Powers and wife Gail of Abingdon, Va. Her daughter, Shelia Osborne and husband, Ray L., Jr. of Abingdon, Va. Five brothers, Clarence David Barrett of Salisbury, Md., James Roger Barrett of Nokesville, Va., Larry Clayton Barrett of Abingdon, Va., William Gerald Barrett of Saltville, Va. and Michael Henry Barrett of Abingdon, Va. Five sisters, Ellen B. Tamara Leigh Roberts
Tamara Leigh “Tammy” Roberts, age 44, passed away, Saturday, April 16, 2005 at the Lonesome Pine Hospital. She was a lifelong resident of Washington County, Virginia.
She is survived by: Her mother, Wanda Roberts of Damascus, Va.; Two sisters, Donna Gregory and husband, Steven of Meadowview, Va.; Melba “Beanie” Blevins of Damascus, Va.; Three aunts, Loma Crosswhite of Abingdon, Va., Wilma Davis of Mountain City, Tenn., Judith Mink of Coy, Penn.; One uncle, John Franklin Mink and wife, Joyce of Abingdon, Va.; Three nephews, Gregory Lynn Blevins of Damascus, Va., Jonathan Woodrow Blevins and wife, Tawny of Damascus, Va., Travis Michia Snyder of Miami, Fla.; One great niece, Shea Blevins of Damascus, Va.; A special family friend, Kathy Elkins; Her two poodles Tax and Tazaroo who were her “special” children.

Kennith Irving McClanahan
KENNITH MCCLANAHAN, 85, passed away at his home on Saturday, April 16, 2005. Born in Buchanan County to the late Wilson and Eva Looney McClanahan, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Carl, Avery, Fred, and Frank. He was a member of the Macedonia Church of Christ and a resident of Abingdon for the last 25 years.
Surviving is his wife of 64 years, Edith Fletcher McClanahan of Abingdon; son James McClanahan and his wife Deana of Abingdon; daughter Lyn Britt and her husband Terry of Huntington Beach, CA; 4 grandchildren, Patrick McClanahan of Pittsburgh, PA, Christopher McClanahan and wife Molli of Charlotte, NC, Shannon Maynor and husband Jesse of Jacksonville, FL, and Erin Nicole Britt of Huntington Beach, CA; and 2 great grandchildren, Christopher Currie McClanahan and Jarah Lyn Maynor.
Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, April 20, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 427 East Main Street, Abingdon, VA, with Evangelist Michael S. McCoy and Rev. Bill Fletcher officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens.
Pallbearers will be nephews, including Keith McClanahan and Roger McClanahan, and other family members. Honorary pallbearers will be men of Macedonia Church of Christ.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6-8pm at the funeral home.

Brenda Roberson Jones Lowe
Mrs. Brenda “Tootie” Roberson Jones Lowe, age 63, passed away Monday, April 18, 2005 at her home following a brief illness. Born on January 7, 1942 in Carter County, Tennessee, Brenda and was preceded in death by her father Jessie Roberson of Elizabethton, TN.
Brenda was a graduate of the Johnston Memorial Hospital School of Nursing and had been employed there for 35 years before retiring in August 2004. Brenda had served primarily in the critical care unit. She was a member of Hunter First Baptist Church in Elizabethton, TN and attended Antioch Baptist Church in Bristol, VA. She was a volunteer for Faith in Action, a member of the Sycamore Shoals Quilters and the Wolf Hill Quilt Guild Stitchers Club.
She is survived by her loving husband Charles Lowe; her loving mother, Helen Roberson of Elizabethton; a son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Sherry Jones of Bristol, TN; a daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Freddie Nunley of Abingdon; two grandchildren, Heather and Cody Nunley of Abingdon; her brothers, Bud Roberson and wife Linda of Lacy Springs, AL, Bill Roberson and wife Connie of San Antonio, TX, Charlie Roberson and wife Judy of Temple, TX; her sisters, Carolyn Jones and husband Tony Sr. of Knoxville, TN, Barbara Miller and husband Lee of Johnson City, TN, Elaine Mottern and husband Paul of Elizabethton, TN, Ruth McDaniel and husband Mackey of Johnson City, TN; her mother-in-law, Alma Workman of Newton, NC; several nieces and nephews and special friends, Mary Lou Combs and members of the Red Hat Society.
The funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M., Thursday in the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service (located on the grounds of Forest Hills Memory Gardens) 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon with Rev. Brad Davis officiating. Interment will follow in the cemetery.
Casket bearers will be Tony Jones, Sr., Mackey McDaniel, Paul Mottern, Lee Miller, Dana Lowe and Alvin Lowe. Honorary casket bearers will be Tony Jones, Jr., Chris Jones, Richard Grindstaff, Kenneth Johnson, Wes Miller, Louie McDaniel, Brian Roberson, Jessie Roberson, Clay Roberson, James Roberson, Freddie Nunley, P. J. Maynard, Russell Lowe and Robert Lowe.

Velma LaVerne Carver
Mrs. Velma LaVerne Carver of Rhea Valley and a resident of Westhaven Retirement Living for the past 2 ½ years, wife of Thomas A Carver, Jr., mother of Judy Smith, mother-in-law of Lee Smith, grandmother of Angela Smith, Pope and April Smith Agee; great grandmother of Loren Marie Agee, Owen Lee Pope and Callie Ann Agee; sister-in-law of Donna Cline, and blessed with the loving companionship and friendship of Virginia Rhoten, found peace with her Lord on April 20, 2005.
One of her greatest joys in life was feeding the children during her many years at Liberty Hall. She did her best to comfort those she cared about when they needed her. May she rest in peace with Granddaddy Junior.
A funeral service was held on Thursday, April 21, 2005 at 8:00 p.m. at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 427 East Main Street, Abingdon, with Rev. David Critcher officiating. Interment will be Friday, April 22, 2005 at 10:00 AM in Sunset Memorial Park, Damascus, VA.
Pallbearers will be Eddie McConnell, Tony Miller, Hubert Price, Chris Dado, Jay Clark and Henry Kiser. Honorary pallbearer is Raymond Vannoy.
