Katherine Shutters
Katherine Vespa Shutters, age 86. died Wednesday, June 7, 2006 in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon. Katherine was born in West Virginia and was a daughter of the late Frank Vespa and Elizabeth Lipford Vespa. She was also preceded in death by her husband Howard.
Survivors include her son Dennis D. Shutters of Concord, NC; two daughters, Joan Elaine Futrell of Bristol, VA and Judith S. Price of Lebanon, VA; 19 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren.
The funeral service for Katherine V. Shutters will be conducted at 11:00 A. M. Saturday, June 10, 2006 in the Farris Funeral Chapel with Dr. Bill Goforth officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 – 9:00 P. M. Friday at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. Evelyn Pauline Elkins
Mrs. Evelyn Pauline Elkins, age 81, passed away June 7, 2006 in Johnston Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Elkins was born December 30, 1925 in Mingo County, West Virginia to the late Willard and Isabelle Griffey Whitt. Mrs. Elkins is preceded in death by her husband, Posey George Elkins.
Mrs. Elkins was a member of Green Spring Presbyterian Church and was a member of Calista Boyd Chapter of Eastern Star in Matewan, West Virginia and the Star Dust Bowling Leauge.
Mrs. Elkins is survived by daughter, Kay Matney and Jerry Jessee of Bristol, Virginia and daughter, Fonnie Owens and husband Don of Abingdon. One brother, Willard Whitt, Jr. of Lexington, Kentucky. Grandchildren, Susan Duprie, Lelia Mervis, Celeste Matney, D.G. Owens, II, and Miranda Owens. Great-grandchildren, Meredith Dosher, Emily Dosher, and Chelsea Robinson.
A funeral service will be conducted at 7:00 P.M. Thursday, June 8, 2006 in the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon, with Rev. John Markel officiating. Interment will be Friday, June 9, 2006 at 11:00 A.M. in Green Spring Presbyterian Church Cemetery everyone is asked to assemble at the cemetery. Pallbearers will be John Clark, Hank Matney, Eugene Altizer, Preston Brown, Tom Deaton, Tom McConnell, Rick Hall, and Todd Abel. Honorary pallbearers, Dr. Martin Monahan and Dr. Wills Moody. The family will receive friends Thursday June 8, 2006 from 5:00 P.M. until time for service in the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon. Roy Russell Widener
Roy Russell Widener, age 54, passed away Tuesday, June 6, 2006 in the Johnston Memorial Hospital. He had lived most of his life in Damascus and was preceded in death by his parents, Hubert and Gladys Vestal Widener. He was a farmer.
Survivors include his daughter and her husband, Patricia and Christopher Clark, Abingdon, VA, a sister, Hazel Jobe, Meadowview, VA, brothers, James E. Widener and Curtis R. Widener both of Abingdon, VA, Johnny W. Widener and Frank Junior Fern both of Bristol, several nieces and nephews and a special friend, Jessica Stanley
The funeral service will be conducted Friday, June 9, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. in the Greenwood Freewill Baptist Church. Interment to follow in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be David Thomas, Bob Fritz, Charlie Fields, Richard Rife, Bill Coalson, John Garrett. Honorary pallbearers will be Mike Shaffer, Julian McConnell and Bob Stanley.

Jane Jennings Jones
Jane Jennings Jones died June 8, 2006 at Grace healthcare Center in Abingdon after several months illness. Born June 20, 1920 in Lebanon, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Charles Henry Jennings and Mary Collings Montgomery Jennings. She was also preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers. She graduated from Lebanon High School and attended Mary Washington College. For most of her adult life, she lived in the Washington D. C. area where she married Robert Joseph Jones in 1962. Mr. Jones preceded her in death. She was employed by the State Department Agency for International Development as a pharmaceutical specialist. She traveled extensively in connection with her job and for pleasure.
Since her retirement, she has been a resident of Abingdon and, briefly, Bristol having returned to Abingdon recently. She was a member of the St. Thomas Episcopal Church and a patron of several charitable and cultural organizations. Besides Travel, she enjoyed politics, music, art, playing bridge and the stock market. “Great-Half- Aunt” Jane will be remembered as and independent and spirited woman, a loyal Democrat, lover of good jokes and as a loving friend.
Survivors include a nephew, Ralph Finney of Phoenix, AZ; her sister-in-law, Ruth Jones of Medford, NY; cousins Jean Hargroves White of Richmond,VA and Andrew Hargroves of Abingdon; ten great nieces and nephews including Martha Witherspoon and John Bradley III both of Abingdon and her special friend and “right hand” Mary (Sammie) McCracken of Glade Spring, VA.
The funeral service for Jane Jennings Jones will be conducted at 4:00 P. M., Sunday, June11, 2006 in the St. Thomas Episcopal Church with Rev. Ellie Scofield officiating. Interment will follow in Knollkreg Memorial Park in Abingdon. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church Sunday. In place of flowers, the family has asked that memorial donations be made to the Arts Depot, P. O. Box 2513, Abingdon, VA 24212 or to the William King Regional Arts Center, P. O. Margie Holley
Margie Holley, age 77, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Friday, June 09, 2006 after a long bout with cancer. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She retired from Johnston Memorial Hospital after 25 years of service
She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter Trigg Thompson and Mary Magdalene Harris Thompson, her husband, George Holley, Sr. and one son, George Holley, Jr. She was a member of the Galilean Baptist Church.
She is survived by one son, Walter Holley and wife Brenda, Meadowview, VA; four daughters, Judy Hurd and husband Jack, Glade Spring, VA, Betty Shew and husband Ronnie, Meadowview, VA, Brenda Porter and husband Mike, Meadowview, VA, Rose Surber and husband John, Meadowview, VA; six grandsons; George Holley, III, (Chester), David Hurd, John Surber, Jr., Barry Porter, John Holley, Brian Porter, four granddaughters; Tammy Holley McNew, Rosemary Holley, Kim Shew McCracken, Hannah Surber and ten great grandchildren.
The funeral service will be conducted Sunday, June 11, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. Interment will follow in the Blackwell Chapel Cemetery.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Paul David Peterson
Mr. Paul David Peterson, age 38, passed away, Saturday, June 10, 2006, from injuries received in a car accident. He was born in Erwin, Tennessee, grew up in Greeneville, Tennessee and had lived in Washington County, Virginia for several years. Paul was a family man, putting his family first and foremost by taking care of all their needs. He wrote articles for the Southern Lawnmower Dealers Magazine and was an assistant Boy Scout leader and involved with his son in the Scouts. He made a profession of faith at an early age and recently talked about knowing he would be in Heaven at his death. He was a mechanic at the Southern States in Abingdon. Paul was preceded in death by an infant sister, Michele Joyce Peterson and both sets of grandparents.
He is survived by his wife, Connie Lowe Peterson; a son, Seth Hunter Peterson; a daughter, Kyla Marie Peterson all of the home; his father and step mother, Royce and Sandra Peterson of Chuckey, Tenn.; his mother and step father, Patricia and Warren Smith of Christiansburg, Va.; two sisters, Phoebe Peterson of Pearisburg, Va., Paula Taylor and husband, Rodney all of Greeneville, Tenn.; three stepsisters, Teresa Nyboer, Bambie Brown and Tammy Stokes all of Indiana; three nieces, Rachel Webb, Cheyenne Taylor and Hannah Taylor
A funeral service will be conducted Thursday, June 15, 2006, at 10:00 AM in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Doyle Pruett officiating. Burial will follow in the Forest Hills Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends after 6:00 PM Wednesday at the funeral home. Active and honorary pallbearers will be family and friends. George K. Poston
Mr. George K. “G.K.” Poston went to be with our Lord and his beloved wife, Ocie, June 12, 2006. G.K. was a World War II veteran and often spoke proudly of the time he served his country. He worked for U.S. Gypsum at Plasterco and The Cove Mine until he retired in 1987. He attended the Trigg Street Church of God. He is survived by
His daughter, Phyllis and son-in-law, Jim Bordwine of Abingdon; son, Roger and daughter-in-law, Mae Belle Poston of Meadowview; daughter, Barbara and son-in-law Hai Tran of Meadowview; and son, Mark and daughter-in-law, Mary Sue Poston of Emory. Granddaughters include Angie Gobble, Jenny Snodgrass, Teresa Blevins, Becky Coley and Amy Tran. Grandsons include Ronnie Poston, Kelly Poston, Jim Bob Bordwine, Jo Poston and Brad Poston. Great Grandchildren include Justin Snodgrass, Megan, Jake and Haley Bordwine. Also surviving are two sisters, Sadie Cunningham of Blountville, Tenn and Lockie Bordwine of Lebanon. Other survivors include several nephews, nieces and special neighbor and good friend, David Eastridge.
A funeral service will be conducted Wednesday, June 14, 2006, at 11:00 AM in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Wayne Chant officiating. Burial will follow in the Forest Hills Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 – 9 PM Tuesday at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Ronnie Poston, Jim Bob Bordwine, Kyle Gobble, Eric Coley, David Snodgrass and Mike Taylor. Adel Stockton Pender
Adel Stockton Pender, age 78 died Wednesday, June 14, 2006 in the Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. She had lived in Blountville, TN most of her life before moving to the Abingdon area several years ago. She was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church, Blountville, TN and was currently a member of the Midway Baptist Church, Bristol, VA having served as a Sunday school teacher. She had been employed with the Bristol Virginia Health Department. She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Nola Hensley Stockton and an infant child, Meri Joyce.
Survivors include her sons, Roger Pender, Annandale, VA, Boyd Pender and wife Connie, Abingdon, VA, her daughter, Terica Pender, Blountville, TN, her brother, Jay Stockton, Wilmington, NC, her sisters, Ruby Shelton, Greeneville, TN and Betty Treadway, Jonesborough, TN, her granddaughter, Andrea Barnhart, her grandsons, Adam Pender and Thomas Pender, her great granddaughter, Briena Barnhart.
The funeral service will be conducted Saturday, June 17, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. in the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Highway, (located on the grounds of Forest Hills Memory Gardens) with Pastor Dexter Terry and Dr. Clay Austin officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Randy Treadway, Bruce Treadway, Chris Treadway, Howard Shelton, Marvin Shelton and Jimmy Shelton.

Helen Virginia Hinchey Campbell
Helen Virginia Hinchey Campbell, age 91, entered her Heavenly home on Thursday, June 15, 2006. She joined her husband James Campbell, son, Jimmy Campbell, grandson, Mark Campbell, her parents, James and Tippy Hinchey, brothers, Stanley, Quince, Trelly, Howard, Chelly and Fletcher Hinchey and sisters, Ethel Toon and Martha Goodman.
She was a devoted Christian, loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother and a dear friend to all that knew her. Helen served God throughout her entire life. She was raised in Palestine Baptist Church, taught Sunday school and raised her children in the Abingdon First Church of God and also attended Pilgrim Baptist Church.
She was a dedicated and loving mother and leaves cherished memories to her daughter, Lynda Campbell, Abingdon, VA, her sons, David Campbell and wife, Sue Sanders Campbell, Neptune Beach, Florida, Harry Campbell and wife, Dorothy Roe Campbell, King, NC, and a very special sister, Clara Harless, Abingdon, VA, son-in-law, Bobby Ratcliff, Abingdon, VA, grandchildren, Peggy Baker, Patsy Hall, Harry Campbell, Jr., Sandra Albert, James Sandoe, Tippy Doane, Todd Campbell, Misty Norris and Robb Ratcliff and 14 great grandchildren.
The funeral service will be conducted Sunday, June 18, 2006 at 3:00 p.m. in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. John E. Massey, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in Knollkreg Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be James Sandoe, Robb Ratcliff, Harry Campbell, Jr., Todd Campbell, Brian Campbell, , Matthew Sandoe, Hunter Norris, Aaron Doane and Ethan Doane.
