SYLVESTER A. "BABE" DANIELS
HORNELL - Sylvester A. "Babe" Daniels, 81, a lifelong Hornell resident, died Wednesday morning (Nov. 1, 2000) at McAuley Manor, following a brief illness.
The family will receive friends on Friday from 2 to 4 & 7 to 9 p.m. at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Ann's Church with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery.

MARLENE D. SCHUBMEHL
WAYLAND - Marlene D. Schubmehl, 60, of S. Lackawanna St., passed away Monday (Oct. 30, 2000) at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester after a long illness.
Marlene was born March 29, 1940 in Wayland, a daughter of Aelred and Florence (Sims) Didas. She was a 1958 graduate of Wayland Central School. She married Ronald C. Schubmehl on April 18, 1959 in Wayland, he survives. She was a former Teller Customer Service Representative for the Bath National Bank in the Wayland, Atlanta and Naples offices, for 26 years.
Marlene was a communicant member of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church. She was a past member of St. Joseph's Rosary Society and treasurer for the Vincent House in Wayland. She enjoyed playing cards with her life long friends for 35 years, mostly for the conversation and stories of their children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband of 41 years, Ron; two daughters, Kimberly S. Baldwin of Langhorne, Pa. and Jane E. (Brent) Bernard of Rochester; one son, Timothy R. (Tammy) Schubmehl of Wayland; one grandson, J. Patrick Baldwin of Langhorne, Pa.; her mother, Florence Didas of Wayland; one sister, Patricia (Lee) Meese of Irving, Tx.; two brothers, Stephen (Margaret) Didas of Hartford and Robert (Lois) Didas of Webster; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. today and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Walter E. Baird & Sons Funeral Home, 100 E. Naples St., Wayland. Prayers will be said at 10:30 in the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Friday in St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Wayland. Father Steven Kraus will celebrate. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Wayland.

BERTHA J. O'BRIEN
CANISTEO - Bertha J. O'Brien, 74, of 8 Orchard St., died Tuesday (Oct. 31, 2000) at McAuley Manor following a long illness.
She was born on Dec. 1, 1925 in the Town of West Union to Homer and Evelyn Young. She married Francis William O'Brien in Canisteo in 1966, who survives.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Leroy and William Young and one sister, Helen Young.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by four step-sons, Francis W. (Charlene) O'Brien Jr. of Eufaula, Ala., Thomas (Joy) O'Brien and Kevin O'Brien of Warsaw and Bruce O'Brien of South Carolina; three brothers, Lloyd Young of Canisteo, Robert Young of Elmira and Leon Young of Jasper.
Friends may call Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home in Canisteo where funeral and committal services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Donald Maynard officiating. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery in Canisteo.

REV. DORR E. HARRINGTON
TROUPSBURG - Rev. Dorr E. Harrington, 88, formerly of 2728 County Route 117, Troupsburg, passed away Friday (Oct. 27, 2000) at the Wyoming County Skilled Facility in Warsaw.
Born in Troupsburg, Oct. 12, 1912, he was the son of William D. and Fannie Cady Harrington.
Dorr was a 1931 graduate of Troupsburg High School and began his career as a dairy farmer and milk hauler in the town of Troupsburg.
He later graduated from Roberts Wesleyan College and Alfred University School of Theology.
An ordained United Methodist Minister, he served churches in Niles Valley, Pa., Little Marsh, Pa., and Keeneyville, Pa., also in Stafford, South Byron, Silver Springs, East Avenue Hornell, Big Creek, Troupsburg and South Canisteo, and the Whitneyville, Pa. larger parish.
He was a member of the Western New York Conference of the United Methodist Church, the Troupsburg United Methodist Church, Troupsburg Grange and a member and Past Master of Robinson Lodge 649 F & AM and the Coudersport, Pa., Consistory.
He married Adah Dunham, June 23, 1935, she preceded him in death Sept. 6, 1996.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, C. Marie and Douglas Gay of Warsaw; his granddaughter, Lennee Gay of North Chili; his grandson, Lorne Gay of Buffalo; his sister, Mildred Bliss of Troupsburg; and 11 nieces, nephews and several cousins.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his grandson, Milo Gay and brothers, Roy and Craig Harrington.
A memorial service will be conducted Friday, Nov. 3 at 1:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church. Rev. Mark Wade will officiate.
Memorials will be received for the Troupsburg United Methodist Church or the Troupsburg Volunteer Fire Company.
Arrangements are by H.P. Smith & Son Inc. Funeral Home, 1607 Main Street, Woodhull.

THOMAS GEORGE HALEY
MESA, Ariz. - Thomas George Haley, 63, died Saturday (Oct. 28, 2000) following a long illness.
He was born Feb. 1, 1937, to Margaret and the late Robert George Haley in Hornell. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Ruth Bloome, in 1998.
Thomas attended St. Ann's School and Hornell High School, and then entered the U.S. Marines, eventually attaining the rank of sergeant. During his 22-year career, he saw combat duty in Vietnam, was at the Bay of Pigs in Cuba, and served a tour of duty in Africa. He was active in Boy Scouts overseas during his military career. On leaving the service, Haley operated a trucking service in California, and later retired to reside in Arizona.
He is survived by his mother, of Hornell; three sons, Robert of Mesa, Richard and Howard of California; five brothers, Robert (Sybil) of Hornell, Lawrence (Sandra) of Springwater, Timothy (Sharon) of Hornell, Eugene (Karen) of Hornell, and Joseph (Brenda) of Hornell; three sisters, Margaret (John) Clancy of Hornell, Mary (Rolland) Thompson of Hornell, Eleachea Buono of Hornell; many nieces and nephews; and grandchildren.
A memorial mass in Hornell will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 4, at St. Ignatius Loyola Church. Burial will be in Sierra Nevadas.
Memorial contributions should be directed to the St. Ann's School alumni fund, the Boy Scouts or the Southern Tier Hospice.

ROBERT G. BRUTSMAN
JASPER - Robert G. Brutsman, 74, of 3829 Main St., died Sunday (Dec. 3, 2000) at the Three Rivers Health Related Facility in Painted Post.
Born in Greenwood, June 4, 1926, a son of Clarence and Flossie Alden Brutsman, he had resided most of his life in Jasper. He had been employed for 36 years in the Maintenance Of Ways for the Erie, Erie Lackawanna Railroad as well as Conrail. He was a veteran of the US Navy having served during WWII.
Bob was predeceased by one brother, Clinton Brutsman, on Sept. 16, 2000.
On July 23, 1948, he married the former Leatrice Myhers who survives.
Surviving in addition to his wife, Leatrice of Jasper, are one daughter, Nickie (Tom) Adams of Jasper; one son, Gerald (Helen) Brutsman of Jasper; five sisters, Mary Louise House of Hornell, Alice Weed of Canisteo, Wyneita Whitcher of North Carolina, Sandra Coon of Rochester and Agnes Brutsman of Seneca Falls; eight brothers, Donald (Jessamine) Brutsman of Arkport, Ronald Brutsman of Indiana, Alvin Brutsman of Oregon, Raymond (Olga) Brutsman of Andover, William (Janice) Brutsman of Louisiana, Dale Brutsman of Kentucky, Alton (Louise) Brutsman of Rathbun and Cleon (Nancy) Brutsman of Cameron; eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
The family will be present 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday to receive friends at the Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 6 Spruce St., Canisteo, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Rev. Brian Diffenbacher officiating. Burial will follow in Jasper Cemetery.

GLADYS L. CHISSOM
AVOCA - Gladys L. Chissom, 79, of 9230 County Route 7 (Town of Wheeler), died late Friday afternoon (Dec. 1, 2000) at Ira Davenport Memorial Hospital in Bath.
Born in Addison on Jan. 18, 1921, she was a daughter of the late John and Bessie LaBarron Rice. She was married to Clarence W. Chissom, who predeceased her on Oct. 6, 1987.
A former resident of Addison, where she attended school, Gladys has resided in the Avoca area since 1947.
She was a homemaker and a former member of the Wallace Wesleyan Church.
Her family includes her daughter, Nancy Farnsworth of Tuscon, Ariz.; her two grandsons, Doug Chissom and Tim (Teri) Chissom all of Avoca; her seven great-grandchildren; her sister, Myrtle Burton; her brother-in-law and close companion, Marion Chissom of Bath; also her nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides her parents and husband, Gladys was predeceased by her son, David E. Chissom on Nov. 29, 1997.
Calling hours are from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Bond-Davis & Bishop Funeral Home in Avoca, where a funeral and committal service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday with Rev. Daniel Pickering officiating. Interment will be in Valley View Cemetery, Avoca.

RUBY V. BAIRD
HORNELL - Ruby V. Baird, 95, a resident of the Elder Care Home, formerly of Hartshorn Street and later Church Street court, died early Monday morning (Dec. 4, 2000) following a long illness.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell.

EDENIA SAUERBIER
HORNELL - Edenia Sauerbier, 86, of 19 Spruce St., died Saturday (Dec. 2, 2000) at St. James Mercy Hospital.
Born Oct. 20, 1914 in Arkport, she was a daughter of Frederick and Edna (Swink) Kane. Edenia was a life long resident of the area.
Edenia graduated from Arkport Central School, were she was a star basketball player. During WWII, she worked as a welder for Foster Wheeler, welding Liberty Ships. She was employed by the former Merrill Hosiery. Edenia will be remembered for her love of fishing and family.
Surviving are her husband, George S. Sauerbier of Hornell; one son, Gary Sauerbier of Almond; and one sister-in-law, Helen Condon of Hornell.
At Edenia's request, there will be no public calling hours for funeral service.
Arrangements entrusted to the Bender-Brown & Powers Funeral Home of Hornell.

GLADYS L. CHISSOM

HELEN LaMONTE CARLYON
TYLER, Tx. - Helen LaMonte Carlyon, 68, of Tyler, died Thursday (Nov. 30, 2000).
She was born November 14, 1932 in Hornell, she lived the majority of her life in rural Western New York before moving to Tyler four years ago. She was a retired school librarian who never lost her love of books.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Olin and Ruth (Howe) LaMonte and a brother, Ken LaMonte.
Surviving are three daughters, Regina Carlyon of Boulder, CO, Jeanne (Larry) Lewis of Tyler and Carla Carlyon of Northport; one brother, Ed LaMonte of Arizona; three sisters, Ellie Silver of Palo Alto, Ca, Rosie Talbot of Jasper and Ginny McHugh of Rochester; three grandchildren, Amanda Lewis, Kevin Lewis and Danya Ahram.
Funeral services will be held today at 3:30 p.m. at Burks Walker Tippit Funeral Home in Tyler, with the Rev. Jerry Carpenter officiating. Honorary Pallbearers will be Rita Ryan, Larry Lewis and the Salvation Army.

JOSEPH D. RYAN
KANONA - Joseph D. Ryan, 33, of Route 53 in Kanona, died Thursday (Nov. 30, 2000).
He was born in Bath, Nov. 13, 1967. Joseph was employed by Alstom Manufacturing in Hornell for 10 years. He was a very loving father and husband.
He is survived by his wife, Pamela Ryan of Kanona; two daughters, Amanda and Nichole Ryan and his son, Jonathan Ryan; his father and step mother, John (Karen) Ryan of Hornell and his mother and step father, Marian (Earl) Burd of Bath; four brothers, Martin Ryan of Sarasota, Fla., John (Patricia) Ryan of Prattsburgh, Victor (Lisa) Ryan of Hornell and Bryan Ryan of Bath; his mother and father-in-law, LeRoy and Mary Parsons of Corning; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at Fagan's Funeral Home in Bath today from 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Reverend Dennis Wienk officiating. Burial will be in Nondaga Cemetery in Bath.

ELOISE M. STEPHENS
WAYLAND - Eloise M. Stephens, 73, of Sawdust Rd., passed away unexpectedly Thursday (Nov. 30, 2000) at McAuley Manor SNF in North Hornell.
Eloise was born Nov. 6, 1927 in Howard, a daughter of Fay and Nellie Jane (Roberts) Dockstader. She was a graduate of the Avoca Central School. She married Bernard Belmont Stephens on Nov. 21, 1953 in Haskinsville, he survives. She was a homemaker and mother of seven boys. She was predeceased by two sisters, Francine Dockstader and Onalee Francis.
She was a member of the N. Cohocton-Atlanta United Methodist Church. She enjoyed cooking, gardening and she loved birds, but most of all she loved her family.
She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Bernard; seven sons, David (Cathy) Stephens, Donald Stephens, Terry (Betty Jean) Stephens, James Stephens, Roger (Donna) Stephens and Ronald Stephens all of Wayland and Brian (Kelly) Stephens of Macedon; 10 grandchildren, Genny, Tracy, Jamie, Nichole, Andrew, Julie, Bryant, Scott, Kaitlyn and Madeline Mae; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

MARGARET E. STONE
SEBRING, Fl. - Margaret E. Stone, 83, of 224 Marantha Blvd., died Wednesday in the Southern Living Assisted Living Facility in Sebring after a brief illness.
She was born Feb. 18, 1917, in Pine Run, Mich., the daughter of Howard and Nellie Gray Terry.
On June 15, 1943 in Flint, Mich., she was married to David E. Stone.
She had resided in Angelica and Hinsdale, where her husband was pastor of the Baptist Church, moving to Florida 13 years ago.
She was a graduate of the Baptist Bible Seminary, at Johnson of City, NY, Class of 1943.
She was a member of the Marantha Baptist Church of Sebring.
She is survived by her husband, Rev. David E. Stone of Sebring; three daughters, Eleota (Paul) Hollier of Angelica, Mary (Jim) Young of Angelica and Davina (Steven) Foti of Hampton Falls, NH; two sons, Terry (Sandy Anderson) Stone of Locke, and Mark (Lorraine) Stone of Fillmore; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her twin sister Marjorie Nabring in 1998.
Friends may call at the Mulholland-Crowell Funeral Home in Wellsville on Wednesday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-8 p.m., and on Thursday from 1-2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Angelica, at which time services will be held. Paul Hollier, her son-in-law, will officiate. Burial will be in Hardy's Corners Cemetery in Rushford.

CLYDE R. "UNK" AKINS
ARKPORT - Clyde R. "Unk" Akins, 88, passed away Wednesday (Nov. 29, 2000) at St. James Mercy Hospital in Hornell.
Clyde was born Sept. 18, 1912 in Fremont, a son of Frank and Nora (Conrad) Akins. He married Lillian L. Eichorn on Feb. 23, 1940 in Knoxville, Pa., who predeceased him on Jan. 26, 1992. He was a dairy farmer in the Arkport area for over 34 years. After retirement he drove his own livestock trucks for area dairy farmers. He was predeceased by a brother, Ralph and two sister, Golda and Katherine.
He was a member of the American Agriculturist and the Almond Grange. He enjoyed going to the cattle auctions in Bath every week for over 50 years.
He is survived by two brothers, Stanley Akins of Dansville and Percy (Anne) Akins of Cameron; three nephews, whom he and Lillian raised, William (Sara) Morgan, David (Linda) Morgan and Ralph Akins Jr.; also many other nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. today and 12 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Walter E. Baird & Sons Funeral Home, 100 E. Naples St., Wayland, where funeral services will be held at the conclusion of calling with Rev. Stanley Lewis officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, S. Dansville.

ROBERT A. ANDERSON
DANSVILLE - Robert A. Anderson, 76, of Stonesfalls Road in Dansville, died Wednesday (Nov. 29, 2000) at Noyes Memorial Hospital where he had been a patient since Nov. 14, 2000.
He was born Feb. 6, 1924 in Dansville, the son of the late Andrew and Dorothy (Traxler) Anderson. Robert was married in Dansville on Dec. 29, 1956 to Helen Bonnie (Farrell) Anderson who survives. Bob was a graduate of Dansville Central School and had been employed as a Truck Driver for B.R. DeWitt in Pavilion for about 15 years, and then Collins and Simmons Trucking Co. from where he retired. Bob enjoyed camping and mechanical work, especially working on cars, along with attending Steam Pageants.
Bob was predeceased by three daughters, Judy and Janet Anderson on May 3, 1975 and Jane Anderson on May 4, 1975.
Besides his wife Bonnie, Bob is survived by one son, Steven Robert Anderson of Dansville; one brother, Elliott (Cindy) Anderson of Dansville; one sister, Carol (Steve) Bennett of Nebraska and Florida; his brothers and sisters-in-law, William (Judy) Farrell of Dansville, Deanna (Stan) Mastin of West Sparta, Keith (Linda) Farrell of Dansville, Carol (Ray) Johantgen of Ossian, Richard Farrell of Dansville, and Linda (Albert) Sutton of King, S.C.; several nieces, nephews, cousins, great nieces and nephews.
Friends may call Saturday 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Chamberlin Funeral Home Inc., 73 Main Street, Dansville, where funeral services will be held at the completion of calling with the Revered Daniel Banks officiating. Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery Dansville.

MARIE B. SMITH
ALMOND - Marie B. Smith, 70, of 9 Angelica Street, died Wednesday (Nov. 29, 2000) at St. James Hospital.
Born in North Syracuse, March 11, 1930, a daughter of Anthony and Rose Buda, immigrants from Sicily, she was a graduate of North Syracuse High School. She was married on July 29, 1950, to Samuel Smith who was then a student for the Christian ministry at Vanguard University in Costa Mesa, Calif. As a pastor's wife, for 50 years, Marie has taught Sunday School, led women's missionary meetings, did counseling and speaking to women's groups as well as assisting her husband in many church activities. They ministered in Seal Beach and Riverside, Calif., Stanley, N.D., Harrison Valley and Watsontown, Pa., Arcade, Messena, North Syracuse, Apalachin and Hornell. Some will remember Marie as a cashier at Wal-Mart where she worked for over five years, or as the organist at the Christian & Missionary Alliance Church in Hornell.
Marie is survived by her husband, Rev. Samuel Smith, who is pastor of the Christian & Missionary Alliance in Hornell. They have three children, Daniel (Julie) Smith who is Director of Media Services in Wheaton College, Wheaton, Ill., David (Donna) Smith who is Pastor of the Rose Hill Alliance Church in Roseville, Mn., and Deborah Warner who with her husband, Al, direct Set Free Buffalo, an interchurch ministry in Buffalo. The Smiths also have eight grandchildren. She is also survived by one sister, Frances Sterns of Tully; and one brother, Frank Buda, who lives in Huntington Beach, Calif.
The family will be present 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday to receive friends at the Bender-Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 354 Canisteo Street, Hornell, where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday with Rev. David Phillips officiating. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery, Almond.

CARROLL S. GLOVER
HORNELL - Carroll S. Glover, 77, of 1190 Webbs Crossing Rd., died Tuesday (Nov. 28, 2000) at Strong Memorial Hospital, where he had been a patient for the past four days.
Born Feb. 2, 1923 in Arkport, the son of George A. and Alta M. Howe Glover.
He was a graduate of Arkport Central School, class of 1942 and had resided his early years in the Town of Fremont and Arkport areas. He enlisted in the US Army in 1943 and served in the European Theater of WWII, later in the Korean Conflict and was in Army Communications, retiring in 1968. In 1998 he was awarded the Cross for Conspicuous Services to our people by Governor George E. Pataki.
Carroll had been a resident of the Town of Hornellsville since 1985 and was a member of Arthur H. Cunningham Post #440 American Legion of Hornell, Hornell Lodge #210 L.O.O.M. and Hornell Lodge #364 B.P.O.E.
Survivors include a daughter, Nancy (Glenn) Roscher of Mesa, Ariz.; a son, James S. Glover of Phoenix, Ariz; a sister, Marlene Kimmell of W. Warwick, R.I.; two brothers, Keith (Joanne) Glover of Manchester and Oakley Glover of Arkport; six grandchildren, Renee, J. Michael, Sheena and Justin Glover, Kevin and Christine Roscher; several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Robertson Funeral Home, Inc., Hornell, where funeral services with Military Honors will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, with Rev. David M. Kilgore officiating. Burial in Arkport Cemetery.
Arthur H. Cunningham Post #440, will conduct an American Legion Memorial Service at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to NYS Sheriff's Assoc., Inc., Summer Camp, 27 Elk St., Albany, N.Y. 12207.

ROBERT E. BARNETT
SCOTTSBURG - Robert E. Barnett, 91, of Rt. 256 in Scottsburg, passed away Tuesday evening (Nov. 28, 2000) at the Livingston County SNF in Geneseo where he had been a resident for the last two months.
He was born in Ohio, on Feb. 8, 1909, a son of the late Bruce N. and Nella Tucker Barnett. He was predeceased by his siblings, Charles and Oscar Barnett, Blanche Shultz, Lucille and Ethel Binder and Nellie Barnett.
Bob was retired from Westinghouse in Buffalo. He was a faithful member and past caretaker of the Scottsburg United Methodist Church.
He enjoyed woodworking, gardening and taking of the church.
He is survived by many nieces, nephews and friends.
Friends may call Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hindle Funeral Home, 271 Main St., Dansville. Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Scottsburg United Methodist Church. Interment in Union Cemetery, Scottsburg.
