Margaret H. Stalder, 84, 303 Chapman Point, Morristown, died on March 8, 2007 at Samaritan Keep Home in Watertown. The funeral will be March 12, 2007 at 10:00 AM, at the First Presbyterian Church of Canton.
Funeral for Mrs. Margaret H. “Peg” Stalder, 84, 303 Chapman Point, Morristown and Naples, Florida and formerly of 2 Crescent Street, Canton, will be Monday morning 10:00 at the First Presbyterian Church of Canton, with Rev. Michael P. Catanzaro, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery in Morristown. Mrs. Stalder died Thursday morning March 8, at the Samaritan Keep Home in Watertown. Calling hours will be Sunday afternoon and evening from 4-8 at the Lawrence Funeral Home in Canton. If friends desire contributions may be made to the William D. and Margaret H. Condolences may be sent online to www.lawrencefuneralhome.org Surviving Mrs. Stalder are two daughters and one son-in-law; Debbie Pahler and her husband Jochem, Potsdam, Cheryl “Cherie” Shatraw, Black River, two granddaughters; Krista Pahler, Potsdam, Ann Shatraw, Black River; two grandsons, Eric Pahler, Sierra Vista, Arizona, William “Bill” Shatraw, Black River, ; one great grandson, Austin, Sierra Vista, Arizona; one sister, Elizabeth “Bettie” Frederick, Theresa, and one nephew, Jeff, Theresa. Born on February 15, 1923 in the town of Orleans, she was the daughter of Gifford and Mary Marie Getman Haller. She graduated from Lafargeville High School in 1941 and then attended Watertown School of Business, On June 18, 1949, she married William D. “Bill” Stalder in the Concordia Lutheran Church in Watertown, with Rev. Frederick Vogt, officiating. Mr. Stalder died November 7, 2004. Mrs. Stalder was the lead trumpet player for the Lafargeville High School Marching Band at the dedication of the opening of the Thousand Islands Bridge, an event attended by then President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Mrs. Stalder worked at the Cornell Cooperative Extension in Watertown, then at the Farm Bureau in Ithaca, before she and her husband moved to Canton in 1952. After her husband purchased Carl Witherbee’s share of Witherbee and Whalen, a monument, burial vault and septic tank business on Hodskin Street, Canton in 1955, she assisted in the Business Office. While in Canton, she was a past board member of the St. Lawrence Figure Skating Club, active in the Canton Republican Women’s Club involved in the Canton High School Student Exchange Program. In 1963, the couple purchased a camp in the village of Morristown. Later the couple wintered in the Vanderbilt Beach section of Naples, Florida. In the past Mrs. Stalder enjoyed snowmobiling at the Stillwater Club in the town of Clare and fishing at Club Mekoos in Quebec. She was a proud member of the Red Hat Society at the Samaritan Keep Nursing Home.

James A. Todd, 80, 59 Gouverneur Street, Canton, died on March 7, 2007 at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, VT. The funeral will be March 11, 2007 at 1:00 PM, at the Brick Chapel Church, Canton.
James A. Todd, 80, of 59 Gouverneur Street, Canton died March 7, 2007 at Fletcher Allen Medical Center, Burlington VT., where he had been a patient since March 2nd. Funeral will be Sunday, March 11, 2007 at 1:00 PM from Brick Chapel Church, Canton with the Rev. Michael P. Catanzaro , pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Canton officiating. Calling hours will be held on Friday, March 9th and Saturday, March 10th from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at the Lawrence Funeral Home, 21 Park Street, Canton. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery, Canton. Surviving are three brothers and four sisters-in-law, Francis and Arloween Todd of St. Cloud, Florida, Lawrence and Joan Todd of Gouverneur, Richard and Mary Todd of Colton and Julie Todd of Canton; two sisters Eleanor Rood of Rochester and Avis Ragan of Canton; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Mr. Todd will also be remembered by a devoted neighbor and friend, Emmy Westdijk of Canton. He was predeceased by one brother, Albert Todd and one sister, Thelma McCollum. Born March 3, 1927 in the Town of Pierrepont, a son of Austin James and Flossie Mae Robinson Todd, he attended Howard School District #6 thru grade 8 in Pierrepont and graduated Canton High School in 1944. Mr. Todd furthered is education at the Albright Art School in Buffalo graduating with honors in 1948. From there he went to Buffalo State Teachers College graduating with honors and receiving his Bachelor’s in Art Education in 1949. In the summer of 1954 he graduated St. Lawrence University with a Master’s of Education in School Administration. He had also took classes at SUNY Potsdam, SUNY Geneseo, RIT in Rochester and a Spanish Institute in Saltillo, Mexico. Mr. Todd was a veteran of the US Army serving from 1946-1947 and was sent to Korea with Co. 132nd Infantry Regiment 7th Division occupation forces in Chun Chon prior to the Korean Conflict. He later joined the US Army Reserves serving from 1952-1955 where he earned the rank of Sergeant and was an instructor from 1954-1955. During his extensive 35 year teaching career, Mr. Todd taught at Williamson Central School in Williamson, NY in Wayne County from 1949-1984. He started teaching art grades 1 thru 12 ; later just grade 9-12th ; and in 1968 just high school when he started teaching public speaking. He was also Director of Adult Education in the early 50’s. He held various offices in the local and county Art Teachers Associations; he was President of Williamson Central School Faculty Assoc., Wayne County Art Teacher’s Assoc. and the Central Western Zone Art Teacher’s Assoc. He also taught Drama; directed, produced, built sets and did make-up for school and class plays and musicals as well as, organized the Drama Club. He also was a Class Advisor and Student Council Advisor; Year Book advisor; Junior High School Bowling Team Coach; and chaperoned numerous, dances, trips and parties. Some of the honors he received through out his years of teaching were Teacher of the Year 1980, Board of Education Distinguished Educator 1981 and Year Book Dedication 1982 among others. Mr Todd was involved with numerous Memberships and organizations including: Life Member of National Education Association; life member of NY State Retired Teachers Assoc; NYSUT; member of Wayne County Retired Teachers Assoc.; Member of Noerthern Zone and Central Western Zone Retired Teachers Assoc.; member and three President of St. Lawrence Area Retired Teachers; Life member of Hermon Heritage and Norfolk Historical Society; American Legion Post #1342 of Lisbon, NY; Member of Heuvelton Historical Assoc; Pulaski Historical Assoc.; St. Lawrence County Historical Assoc. and the Pultneyville Historical Assoc. He was also a member of Salmon River Fine Arts Center, Pulaski, NY; Alpha Honorary Society and Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society; Aulumni of Sigma Tau Gamma National Fraternity; Alumni of Buffalo State Teachers College (SUNY Buffalo); member of the Canton Goldenaires Barbershop Chorus, where he was Vice President for Membership 4 years and named Barbershopper of the Year in 1997; Member and President of the Pultneyville Players. Mr. Todd was a Life Member of Brick Chapel Church in Canton, where he was an Elder and Trustee. Community Services included Friends of the New Canton Fire Station and Christmas Holiday of Lights Committee in Canton. Mr. Todd sponsored a boy in Ecuador since 1998 through Children International and also sponsored a boy through Foster Parents before the Vietnam War. In his spare time Mr. Todd enjoyed teaching Calligraphy; collecting cups and saucers of all sizes and varieties. He also enjoyed poetry and wrote four books; “Memories and Musings”, “More Memories and Musings”, “Chocolate Cake & Mustard” and “Hokey Diddle”. He also enjoyed his camp on Higley Flow in South Colton since the 1950’s.

Arthur Scott King, Jr., 84, of 30 Sullivan Drive, Canton, died Tuesday, February 27, 2007, at the United Helpers Canton Nursing Home after a short stay. Funeral services will be Saturday, March 3, 2007, at 4:15 PM from the Lawrence Funeral Home, Canton with Rev. Michael P. Catanzaro, pastor of First Presbyterian Church Canton officiating. Calling hours will be Saturday from 2-4 pm at the funeral home, where the VFW Post 1231 Canton will stand color guard. Burial will be in the McKean Memorial Park in Bradford, PA on March 12, 2007 at 2:00 PM. Memorial Contributions may be to Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley, 6805 US Highway 11, Potsdam, NY 13676; First Presbyterian Church of Canton, Park Place, Canton, NY 13617; or VFW Edward G. King, III and companion Vicci Sokolov of Syracuse; two grandchildren Mark D. St. Hilaire of Gates, NY and Kathrine Sokolov-King of Syracuse; two sisters, Bette Ann Carney and Phyllis Lee Coyne both of Bradford, PA; two nephews; two great-nieces and 1 great-nephew. Mr. King was predeceased by a brother William King. Born September 3, 1922, in Warren, PA a son of the late Arthur Scott and Reba Hurd King, Sr., he attended Bradford, PA area schools. He then entered the PA National Guard 112th Infantry in 1939 ***. On Feb. 17, 1941 he entered the 310th Infantry Regiment, 78th Division of the US Army. While in the Army during WWII he was captured during the Battle of the Bulge and became a Prisoner of War; he was awarded with several medals including the Silver Star, the Bronze Star and the Presidential Unit Citation among many others, before being honorably discharged with rank of Sergeant on October 18, 1945. (call VFW for info ) On August 27, 1946, he married Rosemary Margaret Lloyd at the First Baptist Church in Orlean, NY with Rev. Shields T. Hardin as the celebrant. Mrs. King died June 5, 2004. After his military service, Mr. King became a police officer and motorcycle police officer for the City of Bradford, PA serving from 1948- 1956. Also in the late 1950’s he worked for Lauffenburger Construction Company in Bradford, specializing in stainless steel welding. The company primarily built and maintained oli storage tanks in the Bradford area. In the early 1960’s began his career with Corning Glass Company at the Bradford, PA Facility. Mr. King was instrumental in the start up of the security department as the company was securing various government contracts. He was later promoted to Production Supervisor of their newly emerging Fused Silica operation. Mr. King was also involved in the search for new plant locations in the state of New York. In 1966 Mr. King ,along with his family, relocated to Canton where he became part of the original management team for the newly constructed Canton Plant. Mr. King was well respected and admired by his fellow employees. In 1970 Mr. King opened with the George Hall Corp. opened the first “pump your-self” gas station and convenience store located on East Main Street in Canton. He later purchased Canton Taxi and renamed it Canton Taxi and Transportation, which he owned and operated until late 1987 when he officially retired. Mr. King was a member of various organizations including the Elks Club; the Canton Club, where he was a board member; the American Legion; the American Ex-Prisoners of War and most actively the Edward G. Seymour VFW Post 1231 Canton. Mr. King was an active life member of the VFW, serving as Commander from 1984-1993 (?). He was instrumental in restoring the club’s membership in his early years as Commander. He was a part-time bartender filling in when ever needed and often spent hours doing maintenance work. Due to his efforts, outstanding leadership and dedication to the club, the back room of the VFW was dedicated in his name. Mr. King was also All State Commander of the VFW for roughly five years in a row. He belonged to various bowling teams thru the years. In his early years in PA he was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was also a baseball fan cheering for the NY Mets and any team who played the Yankees. Mr. King’s passion was golfing, he would play anytime he could. He belonged to many golf clubs including St. Lawrence Golf and Coutry Club and the Madrid Golf Club. While playing he won numerous trophies and got a hole-in-one in Madrid.

Sherry K. Remington Sanchez, 49, East West Highway, Bethesda, MD, died on February 17, 2007 at her home. The funeral will be February 24, 2007 at 2:00 PM, at the Lawrence Funeral Home.
Sherry K. Sanchez, 49, of East West Highway, died Saturday, February 17, 2007 unexpectedly at her home. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 24, 2007 at 2:00 PM at the Lawrence Funeral Home, Canton with Lay Minister Edwin C. Wright officiating. Calling hours will be Friday at the funeral home from 4-8 PM. Burial will be held in the Pierrepont Hill Cemetery, Pierrepont in the spring. Memorial contributions may be made to the Potsdam Humane Society, P.O. Box 748, Potsdam, NY 13676. Surviving are her husband Nestor Sanchez of Bethesda, MD; her sons, Brandon S. Selleck of Potsdam and Trevor B. Selleck of Amherst, NY; her mother Mildred A. Remington of Colton; three brothers and two sisters-in-law; James “Jim” Remington and wife Ellen of Glenfield, NY, Barry Remington and his companion, Judy Stratton of Franklinton, NC, Brian Remington and wife Lori of Colton; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Sonja Hennigan and companion Bill Morgan of Florida City, FL, Sandi Davis and husband Charles of Colton and Sally Spicer and husband Rex of Colton. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Sanchez was predeceased by her father Doyle E. Remington in 2005. Born September 12, 1957 in Potsdam, a daughter of Mildred A. Brown Remington and the late Doyle Everett Remington, she graduated Colton-Pierrepont High School in 1975 and later graduated from Canton ATC in 1977 with an associates degree in veterinary science. She then went on to receive her bachelors degree in nursing from SUNY Canton. On January 5, 1979 she married Joseph W. Selleck. The marriage ended in divorce. On January 13, 2006 she married Nestor Sanchez in Bethesda, MD. Mrs. Sanchez worked in various veterinarian clinics in Potsdam, Massena and most recently in Maryland. She enjoyed playing tennis, reading and horse-back riding and had a love of animals.

Roberta McKenney Taylor, 94, Lemont , Illinois and formerly of 25 Park Street, Canton, died on Feb. 19, 2007 at the Lemont Nursing Home, Illinois. The funeral will be Feb. 24, 2007 at 10:30 am, at the Lawrence Funeral Home in Canton.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Canton. Calling hours will be Friday, from 4 to 7 at the Lawrence Funeral Home. If friends so desire, contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church, Park Place, Canton, 13617. She is survived by a son James C. Taylor and wife Jean of Tinley Park, Illinois; a daughter, Martha Taylor Toth and her husband Charles of Luling, LA; and a sister, Jean Barlow of Canton; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; four nieces and five nephews. Mrs. Taylor was predeceased by two brothers, J. Manley McKenney and J. Richard McKenney. Born April 17, 1912 in Watertown, NY, a daughter of Winfred and Mildred Maybee McKenney, she was a graduate of Canton High School. In July 1929, she married Herman Rule “Squint” Taylor. Mr. Taylor died March 7, 1982. Upon graduation Mrs. Taylor worked doing office work at J.H. Maybee & Son, a coal and lumber business, in Canton. She later worked for Canton Central School as a secretary for 31 years from June 1943 until her retirement in 1974, where she served as secretary to Hugh C. Williams, the District Superintendent. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church Study Club, the Postscript Club of the church and Daughters of the Nile. She was also an active member of the Historical Club, St. Lawrence Golf and Country Club and a life member of the St. Lawrence County Association of Educational Secretaries and a member of the State Association of Secretaries. Ruth R. Walker, 84, of 35 Riverside Drive, died Thursday, February 8, 2007, at United Helpers Canton Nursing Home, where she was a resident since Jan 16th. Tentatively memorial services and burial will be held on May 5th. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Norma Jean Coloton and husband Gary of Canton; one son, James Robert Walker of Felts Mills; one sister and brother-in-law, Norma Marjory Pease and husband Robert W. of Gowanda, NY; four grandchildren, Kevin J. Coloton and his wife Dominique of Silver Spring, MD, Kelly J. Coloton of Ogdensburg, William F. Walker of Felts Mills and James A. Walker of Lowville, NY; one great-granddaughter, Catalina Rose Coloton; and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Walker was predeceased by two brothers, Floyd S. Rose and William A. Rose; a sister, Dorothy Jean Graham and by a granddaughter, Kerrie Ann, who died Feb 14, 1977. Born October 29, 1922 in Stephentown, NY, daughter of Henry Arthur and Edith May Saxby Rose, she was a graduate of Lebanon High School in 1940 and later graduated in 1942 from Canton ATI with an Associates degree in Foods and Diet Therapy. On October 9, 1943 she married William Randall Walker in Stephentown, NY, with the Rev. Oscar Arnold, pastor of the Baptist Church officiating. Mrs. Walker met her husband while attending college and moved to Chipman area, where the couple ran a jersey cow farm. Mr. Walker died March 27, 1976. She first worked fulltime in food service at the Dunlop Nursing Home in Madrid starting in 1942, changing to part-time after her marriage, filling in when ever her help was needed. She then worked as an Avon Lady for 15 years. From 1968-1979 she worked for Madrid-Waddington Central School and from 1979-1983 she worked for Canton College, where she retired in 1983. Mrs. Walker was a member of the Scotch Presbyterian Church in Madrid, where she was a member of the PW Ladies (Presbyterian Women). She also volunteered for the Church and Community Worker Program. She was also a member of the St. Lawrence County Jersey Club. In her spare time, Mrs. Walker enjoyed knitting and refinishing furniture. She also collected antiques.

Michael K. Ringo, 52, 29 Pine Street, Canton, died died Sunday, January 28, 2007 at Fletcher Allen Health Care Center in Burlington, VT . The funeral will be held as a memorial service, at the date to be determined.
Surviving are his parents Bryan and Joyce Ringo of Canton; three bothers and one sister-in-law, Peter F. “Pete” Ringo of Sheboygan, WI, Christopher D. “Chris” Ringo and his wife Jennifer of Mt. Vernon, Washington and Timothy D. “Tim” Ringo of Mebane, NC. Mr. Ringo is also survived by two nieces. Born May 28, 1954 in Glen Ridge, NJ, a son of Bryan Conway and Joyce Eleanor Kruger Ringo, he graduated Canton High School in 1972, where he was a member of the wrestling team, the orchestra and chorus. In 1976 he graduated SUNY Albany with a Bachelor’s Degree in Arts. Mr. Ringo was a self-employed Coin and Collectables Dealer. He was a Professional Numismatic, dealing in Colonial coins, tokens, half cents and large cents. Prior to starting his own business he worked for a coin shop in Latham, NY. He enjoyed traveling around the United States and Europe buying and selling and most recently was an E-Bay trader online. He was a well known and respected member of the American Numimatics Society. As a member of the Colonial Coin Collectors Club, both he and his knowledge were well known and respected. Lawrence Funeral Home in Canton is handling arrangements. Charles D. "Charlie" Locy, 76, 2371 State Highway 68, Canton, died on Tuesday January 23, 2007 at Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center in Ogdensburg. The funeral will be Saturday January 27, 2007 at 10:30, at the Lawrence Funeral Home.

Born on the family farm on the Miner Street Road, in the town of Canton on June 8, 1930, he was the son of Sherman Edgar Jr. and Eva Elizabeth Hall Locy. He graduated from Canton High School in 1947. On December 12, 1970, he married Nellie Margaret Steinburg at the Chipman Presbyterian Church. Mr. Locy ran a dairy farm on Route 68 until 1959. Then in 1961 went to work as a bus driver and later as a mechanic at SUNY Canton, where he worked until 1990, when he was forced to retire due to his health. He also owned and operated a 15 acres hobby farm and vegetable truck farm on the Ogdensburg Road. Mr. Locy was a past member of the Rensselear Falls Grange, the Norfolk Rod and Gun Club and the Ozone Hunting Club in Hopkinton.

Jefferson E. “Jeff” Davis, 54, of 7 Debra Drive, died Monday, December 11, 2006, at the Canton-Potsdam Hospital while under the care of HOSPICE and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, December 14, 2006 at 2:30 PM in the Community Room at Debra Drive, Potsdam with Lay Minister Steven Fischer officiating. Mr. Davis was predeceased by a son, Brandon Davis, who died 2 days after birth; a brother, Thomas Davis and his father Earl Davis. Born June 21, 1952 in San Francisco, CA a son of Alice Rita DeLeone Davis and the late Earl Anthony Davis, he graduated Sacramento High School in 1970. In the early 70’s he served in the US Army for a short time. On December 5, 1987, he married Peggy Elaine Crandall at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Canton, NY with Pastor Herbert Coe officiating. Mr. Davis worked for Baxter Micro Scan Medical Co. as a maintenance person in 1990 and later worked for the House Doctor. He most recently worked as an HVAC Installer for AEON Plumbing and Heating in Potsdam until a disabling illness forced him to retire in 1991. He enjoyed painting, carpentry, wood-working and tinkering.

The Funeral will be Friday, December 8, 2006 at 11:00 am at the Lawrence Funeral Home with Elder Donna Doig, officiating. Burial will be at Brick Chapel Cemetery in Canton. Calling hours will be Thursday from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home. Born in Gouverneur, January 29, 1942, the son of Millard and Marion Sarada Smith Poole, he graduated from Canton High School in 1960 and later from Canton ATI in 1962, where he received his Associates degree in Animal Husbandry. On May 10, 1997 Mr. Poole married Alice Morris Race at the Brick Chapel Church in Canton with Rev. William Mundell officiating. Mr. Poole had two previous marriages that ended in divorce. Prior to the closing of the Newton Falls Paper Mill in 1997, Mr. Poole held numerous supervisor positions during his 31 years of service, most recently Supervisor of Production Scheduling. His background in electronics carried him to start a TV antenna and Dish Installation Company, a business which he dissolved in 1996. Mr. Poole sold Model Trains on E Bay and maintained an E Bay business selling scale model Trains. Some of his hobbies and interests included watching old movies, watching baseball and the Norwood Model Train Club.

Theodora Olsen, 97, Morristown, died on November 17, 2006 at her home in Morristown. The funeral will be December at the convenience of the family, at the Lawrence Funeral Home.
Graveside committal services for Theodora Olsen, 97, of Hammond and Morristown, will be held in late December at the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Port Jefferson, Long Island. Mrs. Olsen died Friday Morning, Nov. 17, at her home, while under the care of her family. There will be no calling hours. Condolences may be sent online to www.lawrencefuneralhome.org. She is survived by her daughter Margaret Prud’homme of Morristown; two grandsons, Grant Prud’homme and wife Jinny of Morristown and Silas Prud’homme and wife Mary of Goodyear, AZ; two granddaughters, Zanne DeJanvier and her companion Margaret Dailey of San Francisco, CA and Relani Prud’homme and husband Rogerio Furtado of Canton; four great-grandchildren, Grant, Jr. and David Prud’homme of Morristown and Cora and Shemuel Prud’homme of Canton. She is also survived by four nephews, J. William Herdegen and his wife Nancy of Boynton Beach, FL, Frank Bright and his wife Anne of The Villages, FL, Col. Edward Bright and wife Caroline of Homosassa, FL and Gary Bright and wife Barbara of Spring Hill, FL. On September 8, 1933, she married Ray S. Wilbur, at her family’s home on Morris Avenue in Elizabeth, NJ by the Rev. Robinson Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Elizabeth, NJ. He died August 18, 1966. On July 17, 1967, she married U.S.C.G. Rear Admiral Severt Olsen, at the First Presbyterian Church in Port Jefferson, NY, with Rev. Tilda Norberg, officiating. Mr. Olsen died Feb 21, 1977. She was also preceded in death by her son-in-law, Rev. Everett T. Prud’homme; her grandson, Jeremiah W. Prud’homme, two sisters; Anne Herdegen and Susan Bright and a nephew, Robert Hedegen. Mrs. Olsen was born Sept. 6, 1909 in Union, NJ, the daughter of Dr. Theodora Peck and Edward E. Peck. Having spent her childhood in Cleveland, OH and Elizabeth, NJ, she graduated from Batton High School in Elizabeth and went on to study art in New York City with a number of prominent artists including Norman Rockwell, at the New York School of Design (1928-1929) and at the Phoenix Art Institute (1929-1932). After living and working in Manhattan for seven years, she set up residence in Staten Island, NY, where he spent the next fifty years as a fine artist, writer, lecturer and teacher. During the years of her career in art, she was the recipient of a number of awards at many of the galleries, museums and art shows in NY metropolitan area. Mrs. Olsen is listed in Who’s Who of American Women, due to her Artist work. During her residency on Staten Island, Mrs. Olsen was also active in her local community as a fund raiser for the Richmond Memorial Hospital and as a member of several organizations including the Huguenot Dutch Reformed Church, The Coast Guard Officers’ Wives Club, The Daughters of the Eastern Star, Tompkins-Rebecca Chapter #214 Order of the Eastern Star, Prince Bay Women’s Club, Staten Island Historical Society, The South Shore Garden Club and The South Shore Artists’ Group. Several years after her retirement, The South Shore Artists’ Group, of which she was founder and president for a number of years, held a dinner to honor her lifelong contributions to the art world of Staten Island. At the dinner she was presented with an award and a lifelong honorary membership in their organization. After her retirement, Mrs. Olsen moved to Hammond, NY to be with her family. Betty J. McCuen, 59, 332 Church Road, Potsdam, died on Friday, October 9, 2006 at Canton Potsdam Hospital in Potsdam. The funeral will be held as a graveside service, at the at the Crary Mills Cemetery on Wednesday, October 11, 2006.

Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas E. and Tabitha McCuen, Potsdam; two brother and a sister-in-law, Carson E. McCuen, Potsdam and Lyle and Marie McCuen, Colton; two sisters, Rose Ayers, Potsdam and Hazel Ayers, Potsdam; and one granddaughter, Chelsea McCuen, Potsdam. Predeceasing Betty are one brother, Leo J. McCuen, one sister, Dorothy Bonnett, and long time companion William J. Hayes who passed April 17, 2003. Born July 4, 1947 in Potsdam, New York, the daughter of Roy and Ruby Casselman McCuen, she attended Potsdam High School and later achieved her G.E.D. She worked on the family dairy farm in the town of Pierrepont for a number of years. Miss McCuen was involved with the Tri-Town Community Center in Crary Mills. Many times she assisted at dinners at the Pierrepont Fire Department, often being requested to make scalloped potatoes.

Donna J. Friot, 44, 543 Front Street, Rensselaer Falls, NY, died on Friday, October 6, 2006 at Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center in Ogdensburg. The funeral will be October 10, 2006 at 1:00 pm, at the Rensselaer Falss United Methodist Church.
Burial will be in Rensselaer Falls Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Rensselaer Falls Fire Station. Mrs. Friot died Friday morning at Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center Emergency Room, where she was taken after becoming ill while working at Heuvelton Central School. Predeceasing Mrs. Friot is her father Wayne Williams, who died May 3, 2003. Born in Watertown on April 12, 1962, she was a daughter of Wayne Douglas and Janet Yvonne Potter Williams. On July 30, 1983, she married Gary Wayne Friot at the Rensselaer Falls United Methodist Church, with Rev. Laudenback, officiating. After graduating from Canton High School in June of 1980, she graduated from Canton ATC in 1983 and later in 2001 she received her bachelors’ in teaching from SUNY Potsdam. Mrs. Friot earned her Masters in Reading in 2003 from SUNY Potsdam. While attending Canton ATC, she worked at Cheney Dinning Hall. From 1983 until the early 1990’s, Mrs. Friot worked at the Canton, Ogdensburg and Rensselaer Falls United Helpers facilities. She later worked as a Playground Monitor, at the Canton Central School. Mrs. Friot worked as a substitute teacher, mainly at Hermon-DeKalb and Heuvelton Central Schools. She was also a teacher at the Ogdensburg Correctional Facility. She was a former Girl Scout Leader in Troops 225, 189, and 175, for a number of years. A former member of the Canton Library Association, she had also been a member of the Rensselaer Falls Fire Department Ladies Auxillary. Mrs. Friot was a Board Member of the Rensselaer Falls Cemetery, Rensselaer Falls Historical Society and the New York State Teachers Union. She enjoyed boating, sun tanning, motorcycling, gardening and doing yard work.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Anne Groome, Canton, NY and Steven and Kris Groome, Cape Coral, Florida; one granddaughter, Heather Groome, Florida and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Groome was predeceased by her husband Cyril, two brothers, James and Henry Winans and a sister Nellie Quinn. Born March 12, 1922 to the late James and Ella Nilson Winans, Mrs. Groom graduated from Baldwin High School in 1940. After high school during the early 1940’s she worked at Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in New York City as a secretary. She married Cyril M. Groome at the home of her parents in Freeport, NY on April 21, 1942. The couple then moved to Fort Bragg where her husband was a Sergeant in the US Army. In the late 1940’s they moved to Freeport, NY where she worked for several insurance agencies in that area. In 1978, Mr. and Mrs. Groome retired and moved to Florida. In 1996 at 74 years old she received a Bachelors of History from the University of South Florida. On March 1, 2006, she moved to Canton to live at Partridge Knoll to be near her son and daughter-in-law. Mrs. Groome was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Colonial Dames of the 17th Century and the Huguenot Society. She also enjoyed music, painting and genealogy.

Surviving is her son Scott William Thompson, Canton. Born on October 16, 1930, in the Hamlet of Morley, in the Town of Canton, she was the daughter of J. Ward and Emma Ruby Goldie Aldous. On November 23, 1956, she married William Howard Thompson at the First Baptist Church in Canton, with Rev. Seldon Ward, pastor, officiating. Mr. Thompson, a longtime employee of SUNY Canton, died on August 9, 2002. After graduating from Canton High School in 1947, she graduated from Ogdensburg Business School in 1949. For a short time, she worked at Standard Shade Roller, and then worked at the Law Office of Sidney Kitay. In June of 1950, she went to work at the St. Lawrence County Department of Social Services, where Mrs. Thompson retired as a Sr. Welfare Examiner in 1981. Mrs. Thompson was a past member of the Morley Grange and the Canton Club.
